Lets Go For The Hattrick!

Although I can't say I actually watched even a minute from the High School Musical franchise, I was certainly not immune to the appeal of the guys. They say two out of three ain't bad, but in the case of the students from East High, I am hoping for a hattrick.

Last year had me gaining respect for Efron after The Paperboy and losing any appeal I felt from Bleu, whose arrogance turned me off as he danced with the 'stars'. Both did however, give a flash of their post graduate ass's, Efron in That Awkward Moment and Bleu in Nurse. Sadly, my favorite, the adorable Lucas Grabeel is still left. Maybe 2014 will see the completion of the trilogy of tush.

The Chair: Agraluca by Karl Royce

When I first encountered the work of London artist Karl Royce, it was not just because of one model, or one body, but because of the way in which each of the bodies Karl captured were positioned, posed and captured. The models in Karl's images appear unbounded, as if the limits of movement, space and gravity do not exist. Some of the men appeared in mid air, others grounded, but lightly so as if floating near, but planted on the ground.

Karl's background as a painter plays an important role as not only is space devoid of boundaries with his images, but color as well. Most of Karl's models are surrounded by just one color, often, but not necessarily black. The surrounding starkness adds a beautiful freedom to his work as well as flow of mobility the models utilize within the space.

Karl has been working to combine the medium of paint on canvas with his passion for photography by using models and images created to combine the two. His focus on movement and a models ability to create shapes with their bodies is central to his objective of utilizing the human body as an art form in the creation of thought provoking imagery.

'Agraluca is Romanian and for obvious reasons is a very popular model! He trains 3 times a day, has the most amazing hazel eyes. He is totally comfortable with his body and really happy to be directed to get the results that the photographer wants. Very professional in his approach and very easy to work with.'

Karl says when planning his shoot with 26 year old Agraluca, the concept in his head was simply model and a chair. The chair acts as a beautiful measure to both highlight and contrast Agraluca's muscular physique. Karl uses the chair as more than just a prop or a stage for his models pose. The weaving of object with body and skin is what gives the images their strength. The chair is there partly to support Agraluca but also to balance the experience of the viewer.

Norm Lewis: You Should Be Loved

I loved actor and singer Norm Lewis even before I knew his name or what he looked like. Back in 1997 over just 91 performances, Sideshow ran it's short run on stage at the Richard Rogers Theatre on Broadway. I was about 21 at the time and although never caught the show, I did catch a performance by stars Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner Rosie O'Donnell's talk show.

The performance impacted me enough to seek out the official Broadway recording of the show and played it endlessly at the time. I love the show's entire score, but one song in particular, You Should Be Loved became my favorite. The song, and singers powerful voice made it a favorite and one I used at most of my auditions at the time. I long ago misplaced or lost the CD, but picked up another last week and again have been transported into the world Daisy and Violet's Side Show.

This time, I read the inserts more carefully, identifying the man behind the voice of my favorite song. Norm Lewis has had a celebrated Broadway career, maybe known to many recently for his turn in the revival of Porgy and Bess. To me however, I will always be thankful for his powerful turn as the lovelorn Jake.

Classic Playgirl Hunk for February 2014

'On Days Of Our Lives, Deke Anderson is a tough guy, but in real life he's pretty soft'

I'm not sure being called soft is a compliment, especially in a Playgirl spread but with his incredible chest and classic face, I am sure Mr. Anderson didn't mind! I had a blog reader recently tell me that one of his favorite parts of the blog were my classic Playgirl spreads. I have had Deke in the queue for a while now, so no better time to feature him than now!

A working actor, Deke has been working steadily in the business since the early eighties and has several projects due for release this year. Roles on in features and on television shows such as Friday Night Lights, General Hospital, Webster and Cheers. Deke was shot for Playgirl by Dino May and proved so popular, was featured in the magazine in 1984, 1985 and 1989.

Sometimes, like when see caps like the first two of Ryan Carnes and Barry Shen from General Hospital, I think how about far we've come.

Then... I see caps like the ones below from the 1970 version of Battlestar Galactic and realize tv, although not as open about it, was even gayer back then...

A Resonating Recurrence: Jerry by Reyj Photography

'For me, looking back at the work that I’ve done with Jerry makes me find the wonder in photography again.'

I am guessing, given the scope and theme of FH, that most readers have a folder on their desk top filled with their favorite images. Photos of Hot,sexy and naked men used to motivate and stimulate. With that folder, the images don't usually stay too long. They are helpful, but time-limited. This folder is fluid and images are rotated on a fairly regular basis, especially when we see a new image to right click and save to take their place.

I think many of us also have another folder on that desktop... This one with images that do more than just stimulate, instead, the images also resonate. Tese images that through the skill of the photographer, the concept or our connection to theme or the model are ones we want to save but unlike the images within that other album, these we want to keep permanently.

It is interesting that when I look through this folder on my desktop, visual connections occur. There are few professional and typical looking male models within the images. Most are unknown, with more natural, maybe more obtainable looking bodies and faces. I guess this is part of the appeal, the way a great photographer can bring out the beauty, the erotic, the sensual within a man that otherwise might be overlooked within the industry. Many of the images don't show the models penis, most have a focus on the male form as a whole. Almost all were shot by photographers who understand that most connections we make, to an image or a man, even when that man is completely naked, erect and exposed, occur through the eyes. If not, the photo doesn't make it into this folder, instead, the photo shows up in that other folder I described above.

When I first discovered the work of Austin photographer RJ Velazquez, despite the numbers incredibly good looking men in his port, I could not get my attention divert beyond his images of Thomas, and his sad, even a little tired, blue eyes. (The Rules Of Attraction) Thomas was naked in many of RJ's shots, but it was the connection with those eyes that had the photos resonate to me. Tomas reminded me of someone, not someone I exactly knew, but maybe someone in my mind I wanted to. I found both model and the images intriguing and ones which left me wanting to know more.

RJ's work continues to intrigue me. Despite his new work and new images, every time I return to look for another subject, I find myself drawn to a model or an image that I previously ignored. It happened with Mark in November (Double Take) Mark's images were there on my previous visits, but I didn't even stop, enlarge them and take a closer look. Yet, in on the November visit, they were the only images I wanted to see more of. Jerry was there the first time I went through RJ's port as well, he was also there in November, but it wasn't until my last visit that Jerry's images demanded my sole attention.

With each return visit to his work, I find images that resonate, most interesting, images that were always there. It is quite a powerful thing to create images that require simmering, that over time rise to the surface to be the only ones seen. This time it was Jerry, his incredible eyes and body and beautifully natural body hair that created the rise for me.

'I find myself being drawn back to the images of Jerry occasionally. He oozes masculinity. I’m not sure if I’m like most photographers, but when I’m feeling unsure whether or not to continue photographing I tend to go over the catalog of my work. As I look over the images from previous shoots, I start to fall in love again with the images and the work that has gone in to create the images – from working with the models to the final product.'

Thankfully actor Australian actor Xavier Samuel actors seems to often find himself naked (and wet) on film. Many might remember him running along the beach in Newcastle back in 2008. In A Few Best Men, Samuel is again soaking wet and not fully dressed for the party...

Coming From Behind: Armond Rizzo by Bryan Nevin Media

What are 5 things people don’t know about you?

- I am a cook.
- I love to decorate cakes.
- I am very shy when I am not dancing or on camera.
- I hate my feet. (Laughs)
- I love being a fat ass.

Those who frequent FH know one of my favorite views, is the rear view. I am always surprised when I am sent a series of images of models and they are made up of only frontal shots. The male form is so much more than just one body part, in fact I realized long ago the penis can often be the least interesting aspect of an image. A man's back, and back side is one of the strongest vantage points to truly appreciate the beauty of the male form. In many cases, when a photographer's main focus is the capture of the cock, the image usually lacks depth and emotion and is viewed, judged and usually quickly forgotten.

Photographer Bryan Nevin, whom I first featured last March, (Man Of Steel) understands this clearly, even with adult film star Armond Rizzo at the other end of his lens. Armond's body has been filmed from pretty much every angle, so Bryan's goal was to find a way to capture something new, a view unique through his eyes. I admit it was the last image below, featuring Armond's glorious butt that first caught my eye, Bryan keeps Armond's face, and beautiful eyes, front and center in each shot. By doing so, Bryan creates a series of images of a man, known primarily for his body, into so much more.

Bend It Like Bobby by Gentlemen Only

'I exclusively shoot men from all walks of life, documenting the beauty of the 'ordinary guys' that surround us every day in our gyms, bars, libraries, offices and shops. These are the men that we often admire from afar but never really get to know.'

It is always wonderful to be able to find images and artists whose work I love to feature on the site. It is especially exciting to me as a lover of photography, and of writing, when I find an artist who looks upon the genre with a unique and interesting perspective. I was fortunate last fall to be able to introduce the readers of FH to the work of UK based photographer Octo from Gentlemen Only.

In that piece featuring Octo's images of Steven, (A Window Has Been Opened) I focused on the weaving of the term gentlemen within Octo's work. I was extremely interested in Octo choice of a professional title and the way it works it's way into his work and final images. I love that it is so core to his work as the word gentleman, and it's connotations, seem far away from from the goals many other photographers strive for with their depictions of the male form. It is the reason Octo's images stood out for me.

Octo and I had been communicating about featuring another model, but there was still editing and post production work required on those images. Given that during our communications Octo was relocating from the UK to his new home in Houston, the US, we decided to focus on a Bobby, another of my favorites whose images were completed and already up for viewing on Octo's site.

You might wonder how Bobby, or with Steven in my last piece, could be considered regular guys. Both are extremely fit, good looking and shine in front of Octo's camera. That is one of the reason's I included Bobby's sports card a the top of the piece. Octo requests that perspective models send in images in order to be considered for a shoot. One of my favorite parts of Gentlemen Only is that Octo includes some of these with his finished images and it is incredible to see his subjects as they appeared in non professional shots vs how they are seen and documented through Octo's eyes.

'Bobby was a joy to photograph and he said that he enjoyed the modelling experience also. It harder than he thought it was going to be as coming up with new poses and trying to force expressions was difficult. But I think these pictures really capture an essence of who Bobby is – a relaxed, level headed young man with an air of quiet confidence.'

From Gentlemen Only:
Bobby is a professional football player who has played for a number of well known football clubs, including a premiership team. At the age of 26 Bobby’s football career is coming to an end and he is now wondering what to do with the rest of his life. Bobby is thinking of becoming a football coach or maybe even giving up sports all together and working on the oil rigs. For Bobby this is a strange time in his life where he’s not sure which direction his life is going in, as such he is interested in opening himself up to new things and that’s why he has ended up in front of my lens. Bobby has been photographed many times as part of his football career and never really thought much about the experience, but now he’s looking at new options he’s wondering if he can make a bit of money modelling. This is Bobby’s first professional photo shoot outside of his footballing work and the first time he’s ever been nude on camera, but he says it doesn't phase him. He’s naked at least three times a week in front of groups of people in the football showers so he’s quite confident being nude around those who aren’t.

'Bobby hasn't told his football team he’s doing a naked shoot as they will tease him mercilessly. e say’s it’s likely his team will find out about the shoot but he'll try get away without being teased as long as he can. I found that as Bobby clothes came off so too did layers of inhibition. At the start of the shoot Bobby was very talkative about his football career, his achievements and footballing heroes (David Beckham, who Bobby styles himself after), but when he was nude his thoughts and feelings of uncertainty about his career came to fore. Although these thoughts seemed to sadden him, he was very positive about throwing himself into new things (such as modelling for me) in order to find out what he is going to do next with his life.'

You can see more of Bobby, much more in fact, as well as more of the Gentlemen shot by Octo at his site:

Dangerous

There is something far more sinister, even dangerous about an unaware bigot. With an outwardly hateful person, at least you know what you're dealing with. When they don't hide their hate, they don't try to fool you, or themselves.

I have never given Sherri Shepherd much thought. Yes, I know she has made some less than intelligent comments and even homophobic remarks in the past. They never really bothered me though as Sherri is an actress, not a scholar, she was not put on The View for her intelligence, but for her comedic comebacks. She blamed her ignorance, especially on gay issues to her upbringing, and to a degree I can cut her a bit of slack for that. Many, especially those brought with extreme religion beliefs are sadly often the slowest to accept that above all Jesus was about tolerance, non judgement and acceptance.

Today however, I found her downright frightening. Although I am sure she was not intending to show so much of herself, her comments about raising children, especially little boys, were ignorant, shameful and hurtful. Sherri made it clear there is something abnormal, even repulsive, about supporting feminine or caring qualities in little boys. She didn't stop there. Implying feminine qualities in toddlers was disgusting enough, but she went further, supporting the nurturing of aggression as being more favorable. I guess an aggressive, abusive child is preferable to Ms. Sheppard than a feminine, or God forbid, gay one. I wish Rosie was still on The View, Whoopi doesn't seem to care enough to bother, and even when she does isn't articulate enough to make a decent point. Rosie would have nailed her.

One Second and A Million Miles

I know I am not the only one who paused to look, and to listen, to actor and singer Steven Pasquale who performed with co-star Kelli O'Hara on The View last week. Pasquale and O'Hara gave a beautiful performance of One Second and a Million Miles from The Bridges of Madison County which officially opened last night on February 20th.

I recognized Steven's face right away, but the longer hair threw me for a second. Steven might be familiar to some of you for his roles on Up All Night, Six Feet Under and Rescue Me. He has the perfect looks for a Broadway leading man and has been playing Madison's Robert much of last year as the show worked its way towards Broadway.
