Urban Safari by Richard Rothstein

Ever since discovering the work of New York chronicler Richard Rothstein he has become one of my favorite artists to feature on the blog. Richard's work is breathtakingly beautiful, erotic and colorful, panoramic, vibrant and unpredictable. Richard's work is also electric, radiating an energy through his images, channelled through both the artist, and the city he has such passion for.

One of the other reason Richard's work is always such a joy to spend time comes from the artist's process and risk and magic that it entails. Most photographers, even those who shoot outside or on location create a work space. That space is usually one which they can control to a degree. A place where the photographer doesn't have to worry about spectators, interruptions and interference. It is usually also a place where the model can feel comfortable, safe to remove their clothing, expose their body and strike a pose.

Those rules are mostly thrown out the window when working with Richard Rothstein. Richard's work is risky, exciting, spontaneous and most definitely in the moment. Richard's studio is New York City and when he heads out into the concrete jungle you can never really be sure what will happen, who you you might encounter and who in the end might get captured or shot. When on Safari, you might see Richard shooting the king of the jungle, Rob Eco, or....he might just turn and aim in your direction, putting you in the cross hair.

Some of my favorite images from Richard are some of the Manhattan men he has encountered in the jungle. Richard captures his targets just walking, maybe jogging, sitting, crossing the street, tying their shoes or talking on the phone. Richard's work, like his studio, is interactive, unavoidable on the streets of New York. If you're one of those streets while Richard is shooting... you just might become the prey, or at the very least, part of the hunt.

Thinking about his adventures in the jungle, I was curious to ask Richard about the many species of New Yorkers he must have encountered along the way. I know if I was to walk by Rob Eco in his loincloth, I would be stopping to get a better view! Without a studio, there are no changing rooms, no bathrooms, make-up tables, fans or electronic equipment. Models change in ally ways, behind street sights, use the wash rooms in deli's and coffee shops, get ready on benches and side walks and visual effects come from wind and the sun. Below, Richard answers my questions, indulges my curiosity and shares stories from his many safari's with the concrete jungle.

FH: Curious to the reactions of the non-models you shoot candidly while out and about in the city. Any stories of anyone really pissed? Upset? Thrilled? Wanting cash?

RR:'In order to capture candids on men on the streets of New York, I’ve learned to shoot from the hip, literally. Sometimes from the chest, but rarely from the eye. Occasionally, I will engage someone and go “in your face” with the camera to see what kind of reaction I get. Reactions range from indifference to anger, and sometimes humor. The anger, however is rare but when someone glares at me and at my camera, I consider that a home run!'

'Probably the most entertaining reaction was from a young man who saw his photographs on my Facebook page and emailed asking if I would do an erotic, full frontal s&m/leather photo shoot of him. He loved my work and hired me on the spot. In all the years, I’ve been doing this I’ve only been angrily encountered once. A young man on Houston Street went into a rage and demanded my memory card. I calmed him down and let him watch while I deleted his image. Of course, I always quickly and capture multiple images. He was too stupid to think of this, so I only had to delete one out of about 10 to get him off my back. OMG, I think I sound like an asshole!'

FH: Your work spans so much of Manhattan from well known popular settings, tourist favorites and nooks and cranny's only those in the know could find? What is the oddest place you have shot someone naked?

RR:'Over the years I have walked almost every square inch of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Not so much Staten Island, but still quite a bit of it. Odd is not a word I think I understand. The only thing in life that strikes me as odd is censorship, fear of sexuality and cruelty. But those aren’t “places.” If by odd, you mean mostly not known to even other New Yorkers, I would have to say Step Streets in northern Manhattan and western Bronx. Before automobiles were common in the city, urban planners addressed very hilly and steep sections of the city by building staircases rather than roads. Today, 97 of these very steep and long staircases still exist but no one, even most New Yorkers, knows anything about them unless they live along them or near them. I’ve done a large series of semi-nudes (using dance straps) with professional dancers on about two dozen of these Step Streets.'

Below: Step Streets

FH: What was the open setting for a nude shoot that had the most risk?

RR:'In front of the Intrepid Air and Space museum and having Tarzan in his loin cloth climb the facade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art'.

FH: How do you, and your models., react when someone decides to shoot...you... doing a shoot?

RR:'Love that! And always put on a show for them. God knows how many iPhone videos and images there are around the world of me and my models! Drunks, tourists, and drag queens usually want to get involved in the shoot itself. We always accommodate.'

FH: You cover the city often very early in the morning, just before the sun, and city begins to rise. Is there anything particular about the people out on the streets at that time of the morning?

RR: 'It’s the only time the city that never sleeps at least partly naps. It’s a very quiet and peaceful time, a time of extraordinary beauty, mystery and calm. The few people who are out at those hours share those feelings and pretty much stay to themselves. The only exceptions to this rule are young women falling out of bars after last call (4 am) hoping to score with one of my models and demanding to photographed with a naked man on the city streets.'

FH: I am sure models are changing behind tree's, in alley's or pizza shop bathrooms? Any strange encounters with looky loo's while a model prepares for a shoot?

RR:'What the hell is a “looky loo?” And my models actually strip in public, it’s part of the process. I usually have an assistant who holds the clothing while I shoot, or we just throw the pants, etc. to the side so that it’s easy to grab is we get in trouble. :)'

lookyloo
-People who go out of their way to look at people or something often causing crowds and more disruption.
-People who enjoy staring at watching other peoples misfortune. Oftentimes car onlookers to car accidents.

FH: Have you ever worked with any model who gets 'shy' shooting in the great outdoors?

RR:'Nope. Never.'

FH:Although models are key to so many of your images, the city seems to always remain at the core, is there anywhere in the city you have yet to, or have not been able to shoot yet?

RR: 'The top of the Empire State Building and inside a major department store like Saks, Macy’s or Bergdorff. I keep trying to get permission, but so far no.'

FH: Ever had issues with the police?

RR:'Twice. One time I was shooting a fully nude model in front of an outdoor cafe at the Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District. It was 4 am, no one was around, but then suddenly a patrol car pulled over. But this is New York City; we play by different rules. Looking at me and the full frontal naked model, the officer told us we were shooting on private property and to please move about 10 feet down the street. We moved. The cop car sped away.'

Below: The shoot, and model from the Meatpacking District shoot.

'The second time, Tarzan was reported on the Subway for being a suspicious looking character and an emotionally disturbed person (because he was waving to commuters as the trains sped by.) The cop lectured us about national security and how everyone is on edge because of terrorist threats on the subway. He talked about the horrible terrorist attacks in London and Madrid. I asked him why anyone would think that Tarzan is a threat to national security, and that just pissed him off. I then cited chapter and verse on New York City laws on nudity and photography, pointing out that he was violating our civil rights and that we were in no way breaking any laws. He became a bit flustered, began apologizing and trying to justify his behavior and finally left us alone when he realized that we have captured the entire episode on video.'

On the hunt with Tarzan (Rob Eco)

FH: You have obviously spent a lot of time out with Rob, usually in his loincloth. Given his looks, and the costume, I am sure he gets a lot of attention, maybe even many thinking a movie is being made. Does Rob get asked to pose with spectators often? What was the best, and worst Tarzan meets New Yorker encounter?

RR:'Rob is constantly asked to pose with spectators and we always oblige. The worst experience, other than the incident on the subway with the police, would have to be the woman who seriously pissed off her husband when she shoved her hand down Tarzan’s loin cloth. They walked off having a serious fight.'

FH: Any loincloth malfunctions?

RR:'Nope. Sorry. Unless you count a little too much ass showing from time to time. But I don’t see that as a malfunction. Oh, and then there are the times that Tarzan has to move stuff around so that he can take a piss, but I’m not sure that counts as a malfunction.'

FH: Is there one question or comment that you get the most?

RR:'The models are constantly being asked if they are straight or gay. And I am constantly being asked that about the models. I find that question to be incredibly annoying. Having said that I do tend to prefer straight models because they are usually easier to direct and less likely to get hard.'

Please spend some time checking our Richard's site HERE: You will find hundreds of images; more Manhattan Men, more Cityscapes, incredible images of the changing seasons, urban reflections and much more of The King Of The Jungle! All are available to own in various formats! Enjoy the hunt!

Full disclosure, I have not yet seen Outlander. But... as soon as I saw my first image of Scottish actor Sam Heughan in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, I knew I had to. This week, Casperfan posted some caps featuring Sam, and his incredible derriere and I knew I wouldn't be waiting much longer.

2 images above from Just Jared

As talented as he is hot, Sam is a graduate of The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. In 2001, he was nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Most Promising Newcomer for his performance in Outlying Islands performed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs. Sam has a look and presence that has me, and I am sure most of you as well, wanting to see more.

Brenton Thwaites: Beyond The Lagoon...

Above: Brenton and Christpher in Blue Lagoon: The Awakening (2012)

'As male ingénue parts go, few rank higher on the scale of infamy than the lead in The Blue Lagoon, the role that brought the lithe, beach-permed Christopher Atkins a depressing sort of immortality and, in 2012's remake, launched the film career of 25-year-old Brenton Thwaites.'

1. Both Brenton and Christopher look pretty dapper with clothes on too!
Brenton by Sam Jones

Actor Brenton Thwaites has certainly seen his acting career zoom up since his trip to 2012's remake of The Blue Lagoon. I take a bit of umbrage however to writer Matt Tyrnauer's recent piece in Vanity Fair regarding Thwaites predecessor in the role, Christopher Atkins. I know that Thwaites has had a string of high profile roles, starring along side Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie and Gerard Butler but Atkins did ok, appearing along side Conrad Bain, Lesley Ann Warren, Kurt Cameron and Gary Busey!

Atkins had a few more hurdles to overcome, ones Thwaites didn't have to scale. Thwaites dip in the Lagoon appeared on the Lifetime network on a Saturday night.... Atkins on the other hand, took his plunge on the big screen, and remained in theatres for most of the summer. Being on television, Thwaites was able to keep his junk covered, while Atkins dangly bits were bounced about to and fro in the water and as he frolicd by the sea.

2. They both have soaps in their past, Brenton before jumping into the Lagoon in Home & Away.

Christopher's soap past was after his Lagooning, spending a year on Dallas wearing pretty much just a blue speedo as both Sue Ellen and Lucy vied for his affections.

Christopher Atkins may not have been Lawrence Olivier, but he did become the object of lust for an entire generation of boys discovering their sexuality. Thwaites I am sure has inspired as well, but I not sure he can come close to impacting as many gay men and teens as Atkins, along wit the VHS copy of The Blue Lagoon did.

3. They both danced around their lagoon's in little clothing. Brenton in cargo shorts and baggy boxers...

Thwaites is young, talented and I am sure will be around for a very long time. Christopher Atkins however, even without high profile roles or critical acclaim has managed to sustain an acting career since first running naked out of that ocean with his shell close to 35 years ago. Atkins has worked steadily on television and video and has an impressive 11 projects coming out in the next 12 months.

Christopher in an ill fitting loin cloth and well... naked.

4. They both had beautiful co-stars to cuddle with and swim under water with, Brenton with Indiana Evans, and Christopher with Brooke Shields.

5. They both took their fair share of skin shots. Brenton (above) playing guitar at a back yard bbq, Christopher (below) for Playgirl Magazine.

September's Swan Song: Donny by Nathan Scott

I love heading to the beach no matter what the temperature, no matter what the date and no matter what the season. The winter especially turns what many consider a summer playground, into a totally different, yet equally beautiful experience. Although there are many who flock to the shore only in the summer, they really are missing out on the full breadth of what the location has to offer. It is almost surreal, but yet a beautiful paradox, seeing snow and ice sliding over, even mocking, what many consider to be iconic signs of summer.

In the area of the world in which I live, you can pretty much predict what a beach day will be like in each month of the year...except maybe September. October and November are cool but still bright. The sun still shines, but the ocean prevents it from sharing any long lasting heat. From December through March, the beaches are rugged and dark, the sand ice cold and the waves rough and angry. In April, May and June the sun again heats the sand, but only the surface. It is a trick though as if you dig a little deeper, winter is still lurking, just under the top layer of warmth. July and August means the ocean has finally had enough time to warm enough to welcome the many bodies of all shapes and sizes that submerse themselves within.

Now September is a gamble. There are some days in which the beach has begun transitioning into winter, but there are other days, that the grip of summer still holds firm. This past weekend, the summer won out and I had one of my favorite beach days in a long while. The September sun is fierce, but it lacks the stamina of August. It shoots down sharply, but only able to really penetrate heat for a few short hours each afternoon. If you lie down low on the sand, low enough to escape the crispness just above you in the air, you can feel the sun glide over your skin and for a brief moment, it is summer again.

I had a few of those moments this past Saturday. They were quick, but intense. As soon as I sat up, or turned my head to talk, the mirage faded and it became Autumn. When my head was down, and my eyes were close, the people around were in bathing suits, swimming, playing and rubbing sun screen and lotion on their skin. When I raised my head up, I could see there were only actually a few people in the water, mostly just wading. Although there were a few brave souls still in bathing suits, moost people had on shirts, a few even in jackets and sweaters. It remained though, a perfect beach day.

It may be hard to imagine looking at these incredible images of Donny, that the day of this shoot was anything other than another perfect beach day. Donny's dazzling smile, glistening skin and incredible body seem created for beach days. It was obviously warm enough for Donny to take a dip, a quick one but... if you look a little closer you can see the sun isn't as bright as it should be and sky is cloud filled, even a little ominous looming in the background of some of the shots. The images of Donny from photographer Nathan Scott maybe pretty close to perfect, but the day... had it's challenges.

I have been loving featuring Nathan's work since first featuring his work this past Spring. Nathan's work and images kicked off the Summer season on FH with the 4th of July feature (Home Of The Brave,) so it seemed appropriate that Nathan's work helped close off the season as well. I love how that in many of the shoots I have featured thus far, Nathan has shared wonderful stories of props or locations that all came together to create incredible results. For the beach shoot with Donny, the great results were not because of the process so much as in spite of it!

The shoot took place in Rockwall, Texas at Lake Ray Hubbard. Nathan says that Donny used to work in real estate out in that area and knew some really great spots that were both secluded, but still provided access to the Lake. The shoot had multiple objectives including shooting images of Donny along with a female model for a campaign for handbag designer Vasaelini. Nathan was also shooting images for Blue Collar underwear and Donny with American flag for a shot for an article in Nathan's Pastiche magazine. With all of those goals he was juggling, Nathan also wanted to shoot some solo images of Donny on the beach meant to help him finish out his portfolio so it would be complete so he could begin to meet with agencies.

'Normally the water levels are so high that the metal dock that he posed against is right at water level. But since it was so dry we used that as a place to shoot under. The one's where he is hanging onto the rope and are in black and white was inspired by one of my photography idols David Brad Photography. I just really wanted to capture this moment of solitude and reflection. I couldn't decide if I wanted them in Black and White or in color, so I edited them in both.'

'The pictures with the boat were a true nightmare. We are about 20 minutes past call time and our female model had not showed. We call her and she gives us the excuse that her car broke down and it is getting towed, at this moment I was like I am so sorry let us come get you, and she was like no. Plus it is supposed to rain so I don't think the shoot should happen. So I am freaking out. The redhead model we ended up using lived at the apartment we were doing make-up and wardrobe at. We literally told her to shower and go through hair and make-up while we raided her closet for wardrobe. While this is happening the original model snap chats Donny and is now relaxing and hanging by the pool. Needless to say I was not happy at all.'

'When we get out to the lake, boat had broken down on the lake and the engine had flooded. So the boat does not work. The shots were actually captured with the boat hitched to a trailer and backed into the water on a ramp. So my next challenge was shooting, because everything was at a massive incline because we are floating in the water on a trailer hitch on the ramp. And I had to be careful of my surroundings so I did not capture that parking lot and all the non appealing things around us.'

With all of these obstacles, Nathan being the skilled professional he is, still managed to capture some sensational, and very strong captures for Donny's portfolio. Within these images, there is no rain on the way, no female model flaking off and that boat, it works perfectly. Within the images, the obstacles disappear. Like my my experience this past weekend, with my eyes closed and my body low, close to the ground... it is within the imagery, the perfect summer beach day.

Locker Room: Just One Of The Guys

Long before Amanda Bynes got the idea in 'She's The Man', actress Joyce Hyser was strapping back her breasts and heading into the boys locker room in the 1985 teen comedy 'Just One Of The Guys'. I sort of remember seeing this flick years ago on VHS, but I had forgotten all about it until working on my Blast From The Past piece last week on actor William Zabka.

Hyser with actor Leigh McCloskey

I can't exactly recommend the film, but I did remember a couple of locker room scenes that required checking it out again. Most teen comedies in the 80's and 90's relied on at least one or two locker room scenes for both a little comedy, and a little skin. With Just One Of The Guys, both were rather scarce. Having the female, pretending to be a male as the towel boy seems ripe for great comedy, but the throw away bit doesn't really amount to much more than I have capped below.

Zabta with Billy Jacoby

The one thing I did enjoy about the movie was rediscovering how much I used to crush over actor Billy Jacoby. Billy was a scene stealer in most of his movies and when I watch this as a kid, more than crush worth. Billy is still looking fine (see below) and now goes by Billy Jayne for his acting credits. Billy was fixture on television and movies in the eighties and nineties and was last seen on TV in 2010 in an episode of The United States Of Tara.

Underlying Wonder: Jimmie by Greg Lindeblom

'I believe that we photographers have a rare gift to see beyond the surface to reveal the true underlying wonder that is all around us. Whether it is a breathtaking landscape, a perfect architectural detail, or an exquisite human body, I strive to show it in all its glory and depth.'

It remains endlessly fascinating to me, to explore what motivations make up the creation of a shoot or single image. Whatever we see in any image is made from the combination of three factors. For some photographers, and for some shoots, the photographer has a specific goal or theme in mind that the model is hired to portray. In other cases, the photographer has seen, or experienced something specific about the model they are shooting, a characteristic or quality they try to bring out and capture.

I always wonder when seeing an image that I like, which perspective they were shot from. Ultimately, both have the ability unveil both truths and lies depending on the shooting and editing process but I love when an artist is able to zoom in on a quality that resonates through each and every images of the model in front of their lens. This certainly rang true for me after discovering these images of Jimmie Slater from photographer Greg Lindeblom. Greg has been shooting and exhibiting work for over 20 years. His artwork has been on exhibit in New York, Boston, Seattle, Nashville, Detroit, and throughout south Florida

With all of Greg's skill and experience, when I saw my first image of Jimmie, the first adjective that came to mind was adorable. Corny I know, and maybe not a word normally associated with a great image, but I would argue that. Through Greg's lens and perspective, Jimmie conveys an refreshingly unassuming quality. Sweet, playful and just a little bit naughty. The combination of his fit, tight body along with his engaging, and slightly devilish smile, weaved together for captivating, and incredibly sexy images.

When I first contacted Greg about featuring his work with Jimmie, I sort of assumed from the images he was new to modeling. Not because I detected inexperience, but because he came across so unaffected and natural in front of the camera. When Greg wrote back that Jimmi might be familiar due to work on a variety of adult sites and movies, I was a bit surprised, but of course immediately googled.

When seeing Jimmie's other images, I was reminded instantly of Greg's quote from a previous feature about his work on the blog. The quote at the beginning of this feature came from that piece from 2011 Freezing Movement. Greg's words about seeing beyond the surface and revealing true underlying wonders resonated as I viewed Jimmie's adult site images, contrasted with the images from his work with Greg. Greg's words about the shoot, only reinforced the differences motivation and intent can bring forth.

'Jimmie is a really sweet young man, who has recently relocated from North Carolina to south Florida. We shot this past July, not long after he moved here. Jimmie is a handsome guy and it was a real pleasure working with him. His smile is infectious and beguiling. We were having so much fun on the shoot that he just kept smiling even when we put him in chains.'

I couldn't help but smile myself when reading Greg's description of Jimmie smiling all the way through the bondage themed images. The quality Greg tapped into seems such a core part of who Jimmie is as a person, a trait however which may have required covering or masking in his porn work. Most adult sites don't necessarily promote and capture 'sweet' and smiling is usually discouraged in favor of lusty animalistic glares. I loved Greg's work with Jimmi from the beginning, but appreciated it even more after the research and seeing other sides of him that have been captured.

Perfectly Oblivious: Laifster by studioAtruong

$
0
0

So often when I feature images of models fully exposed there can be a degree of awareness. This awareness can sometimes be off putting, overshadowing the images itself. Sometimes, this can be felt from the model, an observable knowing that they are completely naked. An awareness their body, their penis in particular, will be examined and judged. Baring at all can naturally bring on hesitation and nerves. It can be due to factors ranging from the model's personal insecurities, an uncomfortably with the photographer, or because their motives for taking it all off were not rooted in a confidence of the process.

Sometimes the awareness comes from the person behind the lens. You can feel in most images when the photographer is mostly, or only, interested in getting the penis money shot. It is not difficult to tell in most images, even when masked with fashion and theme, when body parts are more important than the body as a whole and the creation of a great image. Sometimes it is just the inexperience of the photographer, possibly shooting their first nudes or their struggle to make a model feel comfortable.

Sometimes the inexperience, even the nervousness, can be harnessed by a skilled photographer or an adventurous model and great images can still be created. Often however, you can feel the discomfort and the images give off an air of uncomfortability that makes them difficult to view and enjoy. It is always refreshing then, when you see a set of images from an artist and model who appear to be completely oblivious and unaware.

That is exactly how I felt when I saw these images of Laifster from Alain from studioAtruong. Laifster is obviously completely naked, yet he also comes across as completely confident, unabashed with zero apprehension in front of the camera. The images are so full of joy and energy it is as if Laifster was shot from a cannon, bursting out, moving and grooving around the studio with Alain documenting every movement and step of the dance.

'Laifster is American with Norwegian descentm your dream Nordic god! Over 6ft with single-digit body fat. And he's so not shy...Oh and so flexible!'

Alain also describes Laifster as a bit of a Renaissance man, an actor, dancer who has travelled the globe, builds motorcycles, surfs, loves music, metal fabrication and the Circus arts. You can see pretty much all of his passions and skills within his work as it is one's experiences that combine together to build confidence and the beautiful ability to do what you want, move with such freedom and to dance with so little concern for what others think and with such beautiful obliviousness.

Autumn in New York by Richard Rothstein

New York artist Richard Rothstein is known of course for his incredible images of Manhattan Men. But it is not just the men of the city that drew me to his work, it was his photographs of the city itself. Richard's imagery takes in everything about the city most of us love, and so much of the city most of us have yet to experience.

When choosing images for my interview with Richard last week, (Urban Safari) the images that I saved included Richard's documentation of Autumn in New York. Autumn is my favorite time of year and although I have been to New York many times, I have only hit spring, summer and one trip in the middle of December. I have seen the city blanketed in green in the summer and white in the winter, but I long to visualize in person, the city covered in red, yellow and orange.

Until that time, these images will more than temporarily satisfy my desire. Check out more Autumn, and more naked men, on Richard's site HERE:

I was curious lately when some of my old posts from 2008 of actor Frank Grillo started popping up at the top of my clicked on links. I had done a few early posts under the title 'Classic Soap Star Of The Day'. Well, a little IMDB check let me know there is nothing classic about Frank's acting career.

In the past few years the actor has appeared in The Purge: Anarchy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier , Zero Dark Thiry, The Grey and a slew of other high profile movies. Frank also has a series of movies being released over the next 12 months. Nice to be reminded of these posts, (HERE:& HERE:) and images, from six years ago!
