In A Nearby Forest... Mr. Herzog by Gordon Nebeker

'I asked Mr. Herzog if he was happy with the photographs we were getting and in true Mr. Herzog style he answered, “doesn't matter if I am happy with them. If YOU are happy with them then I am happy with them!" Needless to say, I am very happy with them!'

I always look forward to featuring the work of photographer Gordon Nebeker, but it is especially satisfying when the focus is on model Mr. Herzog.  I was fortunate to have been able to share Gordon's images with Mr. Herzog a few times last year.  In the last feature, (O Christmas Tree) a naked Mr. Herzog was up on a step ladder, naked of course, putting the topper on the Christmas tree.

Gordon's images of Mr. Herzog don't only capture his incredible body, distinct masculinity and strength.  Gordon also captures his positive attitude and hopeful and determined spirit.  When we first met Mr. Herzog last summer, he had recently returned from three trips oversea's with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.

Having modeled in the past, Mr. Herzog decided to dip his toe temporarily back in front the camera as part of transitioning back into civilian life and into a more permanent and stable job to support his family. Mr. Herzog is still committed to his goals, but it hasn't come without hurdles and complications.

'Civilian life hasn't turned out how I wanted it to be. Been waiting almost a year to hear back about a contracting job and who knows if they even remember me. All about a security clearance. But I've been holding my own remodelling homes. Built log cabins and homes and docks prior to joining the military. So it was a safe fall back plan considering he experience I had with it.'
Mr. Herzog

When Gordon was planning his drive home from Florida early last month, Gordon found that his journey would be taking him close to where Mr. Herzog lives.  He contacted him about whether he would be interested in doing an outdoor/location shoot this time around, as they had not done one of those before.  'As I expected, he was all for it and arranged for time off work to spend the day with me in a nearby forest.'

'I first found the forest through research on the Internet but it turned out that Mr. Herzog had done a shoot there before so was somewhat familiar with the area. As always on a location shoot, I had some ideas of certain shots I wanted to get. But i left the rest up to working with what we would find as these things can’t be planned out too precisely when it is the first time to visit a location.'
Gordon Nebeker

On the day of the shoot, location became less worry than the weather.  Gordon was more concerned with moisture as steady rain was forecast throughout the day.  Gordon shares that it rained all the way driving to the location, but once they arrived, the rain just stopped, not starting again until they were getting ready to leave.  Since the water coming from the sky was taken care of, the only issue became whether Mr. Herzog would brave sliding his naked body into the river water, still pretty chilly so early in the spring.

'Mr. Herzog is wonderful to work with. Of course it helps that he is handsome and keeps himself fit and photograph ready but it is attitude that constantly impresses me. If you ask him to "jump", he will respond, “how high?” In this case, it was “would you be willing to go into the water?” Keep in mind this creek is probably snow fed and the water is cold, cold, cold. But Mr. Herzog was in the water and splashing around before I could even finish my question.'
Gordon Nebeker

'The water...it was darn cold. I think the high that day was 57 or so, so the water was a smudge colder. I've been in that cold of water before...but that was during recruit training and was kind of forced to. But I'm a sport and whatever is going to get the best shots, sometimes you gotta suck it up and just go for it!'
Mr. Herzog

Although Mr. Herzog was the one braving the frigid water, he shares that Gordon didn't have it completely easy either.  Gordon had come down with a cold prior to the shoot and the place they were shooting was deep into the woods. Mr. Herzog says he felt bad dragging his photographer on such a long walk, but hearing the rapids far up ahead inspired them on. I was certainly inspired by the visual results, so much so I had to add a few extras on The Over-Flow. Be sure to check them out HERE:

'Gordon was a champ through it all, and I must say we make a great team. The only people we saw were the ones riding their bikes around the park. Lots of parked cars but no people. Which was kind of odd. Especially since some of the cars were parked where we were and when we got back they weren't around....kind of fishy. Overall the weather was crummy, but two great minds hat think a lot alike can accomplish wonderful things!'
Mr Herzog

'Who WOULDN'T love working with a model like Mr. Herzog??  It certainly won’t be the last of my shoots with him, 'God willing and the creek don’t rise.'

Sterling Hayden: The Star

Thursday night, I watched my DVR recording of The Star. The 1952 film aired on TCM a week or two ago and I recorded it as it was part of a Bette Davis night on the network. The Star was ok, and Davis had a few good scenes, but it certainly wasn't one of her films that I look forward to watching a second time.

What did grab my attention were the far too scenes featuring Davis' co-star Sterling Hayden. Hayden's image could be used as visual for the term 'beefcake' with his great facial structure, strong sturdy body and beautiful blonde hair.

I knew the name, but in checking out his IMDB, the only film with Hayden in it that I had seen was one of his last performances in Nine to Five when the actor was in his 60's.  He certainly grabbed my attention and clearly, from the many shirtless images that came up while googling him, he grabbed the attention of others.

So many young men and women used to make their way to Hollywood to find fame and fortune, but I don't think many today have the stories of actors that came decades before them.  Hayden's story was unique, and one he wrote about in his autobiography.  The little snippet below is from Wikipedia, and also helps explain all of the images on-line of Sterling on the Ocean.

'Hayden dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and took a job as mate on a schooner. His first voyage was to Newport Beach, California, from New London, Connecticut. Later, he was a fisherman on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, ran a charter yacht, and served as a fireman on 11 trips to Cuba aboard a steamer. He skippered a trading schooner in the Caribbean after earning his master's license, and in 1937 he served as mate on a world cruise of the schooner Yankee.'

~Part-time Model and Full-time Body-builder~

'With a quiet demeanor, this 23-year-old Colombian-American boasts one of the most impressive physiques in the studio's portfolio. He epitomizes the classic image of the "tall, dark and handsome" Latin and can pull off the roles of bad boy and classic physique model with ease. The studio has documented Ricardo's progress in the gym since shortly after his 21st birthday.'

There's something about Ricardo....  His beefy physique and smouldering dark eyes are part, a big... part of the reason, but I am also fascinated by how he came to be standing in front of the camera for New Manhattan Studios.   As many of you know, one of my favorite models, Alex Corso, is Ricardo's older brother.  As you know from enjoying Alex's images, he is not a bit shy about sharing his personality, creativity and sexy smile.

Everyone who purchased NMS's Captured Shadows #2 knows, Alex shared pretty much everything in the issue; his work as both a PA, and a photographer and of course that smile, and every inch of his incredibly hot body.  Alex is a natural in front of the camera, not afraid to take a risk, uninhibited with creativity, taking risk and tapping into his exhibitionist side.

Older brother Ricardo was a bit more reserved.  A man of few words.   Ricardo and Wes started mostly with clothed and fitness work, taking it all off, especially with his older brother spritzing him down for a shoot, wasn't part of the plan, initially....  But... as time went on, and each shoot was completed, Ricardo, like his older brother, became more comfortable in front of the camera.  In fact, the perfectly titled, Dark & Stormy series was inspired by the image at the top of this piece taken by his brother Alex.

Ricardo became so comfortable, in his last couple of sessions he was ready to take some risks of his own.  With Wes behind the lens, and Alex off at work, for  Ricardo's last couple of shoots, the inhibitions came down, and the clothes this time, came totally off.  These images are just a sampling, but the full meaty results can be found by flipping the pages of Captured Shadows #3 which you can order in magazine form, or in an eBook form HERE:

Delectable Doppelganger: Jon Booth by Fred Sugar

So... the man in the first two isn't model Jon Booth, but after seeing Fred Sugar's sexy images of Jon, I had an intense, and pleasurable case of déjà vu.  I thought Jon was incredibly hot upon first glance, but he also reminded me of someone I had profiled previously on FH before.  After racking my brains, and staring at Jon's adorable bang flips, I remembered the actor he reminded me of...

'As for models, I love real people, I like guys who have lived, rugged looks.'

Jon Booth by Fred Sugar

There are so many  different reasons I am attracted to an image, a photographer's work or an individual model.  After Fred posted a shot of Jon on his Facebook Page,  and after I finally figured out he reminded me of sexy actor Scott Michael Foster, (in the first two images) I set to out to find more about the delectable doppelganger.

Jon has a sexy every man look and vibe.  Strong face, great smile and a fit and perfectly toned body. Jon also has one of the most perfectly round shaped butts as you can see from one of the images below.  I absolutely love Jon's wavy brown hair.  Not only was it a reminder of Scott Michael Foster, it is incredibly sexy and speaks to his sense of style and laid back freedom.

That laid back sense of freedom was one of the reasons the 20 year old amateur model answered Fred's ad to model, not to mention make a bit of cash. An exhibitionist by nature, Jon enjoys being seen, and looked at while modeling naked.  Fred shares that during their shoot, some things, like sudden pop-ups, happened outside of Jon's control, no matter what he tried to think of to keep things down and relaxed....

You can check out more of Fred's work with Jon on his site HERE: And you can also check out more of Fred's imagery on his ModelMayhem site HERE:

Bloody Mama, 1970

Last month, TCM aired the Roger Corman 1970 Gangster drama Bloody Mama.  I watched my DVR recording the other night, and had to share the first scene from the movie after the opening credits.  Shelly Winters played Kate 'Ma' Barker, and along with her family, including her 4 overall wearing sons, go on a crime spree of theft, violence and murder.

Ma's four sons are played by Don Stroud, Robert Walden, Clint Kimbrough and a very young.Robert De Niro.  In addition to a 'more than implied' prison sex scene between Walden and actor Bruce Dern, the film opened with Ma alternating bathing her sons in a tub on the front porch.

During the bath scene, the incredibly hot Clint Kimbrough along with.Robert De Niro were playing towel and horse playing in the background during much of the scene. Although it is not clear in the caps I made, if you watch the video, (below) it is clear Kimbrough and De Niro are completely naked in the scene.  Although nothing is clearly visible due to obstacles, shadow and camera angles, you can tell by looking closely, (which of course I did) there were no cock socks used in this 1970 drama.

'This series is a tribute to anyone who has struggled for self-realization and self-fulfillment, with a wink and thanks to David Bowie’s  The Man Who Fell To Earth.'

You have to believe it to see it was one of the taglines of director Nicolas Roeg's 1976 science fiction film, The Man Who Fell To Earth. .  For those who struggle with anxiety a more fitting quote might be that You have to feel it to believe it.  The fight, the battle, the war, isn't just with what is around us, but what is inside us. Those intense feelings of fear, rejection and inadequacy, the mental walls and barriers that sometimes pop up no matter where we turn.

'Over the past few months, I've been questioning and challenging anxiety, fear and alienation through my photography. I've discovered that through my art and the beauty and power of the male body, I can give expression to those emotional challenges that come from daily life, especially in a city like New York that is demanding and relentlessly challenging. Of course the urban struggle is always more than worth the work.'

One of the challenges many with anxiety face is the outside.  Outside of safe walls, outside of their homes, outside of their comfort zone.  Some days, work, errands and being in public is manageable, other days, the same tasks, sometimes something as simple as picking up dog food at the grocery store, can take tremendous energy and seem overwhelming and unmanageable.

During those times, days when a quick trip to the grocery store, can seem like a trip up Mount Everest, inner strength can be hard to tap into.  During those times, we self talk, we sooth, and most of all we dream.

We dream how incredible it would be, to leave our safe space and accomplish our goals without having to face the judgement and interactions with other people.  We long to not have deal with a chatty store clerk, empty streets and stores, and no lines at the check out counters to prevent us returning to our homes.

Of course, being in out in the world completely alone, especially in a city like New York, would be impossible.  Yet, artist Richard Rothstein, and dancer Chris Bell, manage to do this, at least within this photographic vision.  I love the dream like feel to seeing Chris, totally alone, the city his to maneuver through without obstacles, walls or judgement.

I love that when visually alone, with Manhattan all around him, a sense of power and control takes over.  Chris transforms and transitions from  someone who was initially reaching to the ground for safety, to a man reaching for the sky in celebration of his freedom from the obstacles, walls and fear that had weighed him down. Not just facing the Manhattan Monster, but winning the battle with a passionate naked dance in celebration of facing the fear.

I love the sense of freedom and joy in Christopher's dance, a feeling many of us feel when fears have been faced.  As the night goes on, and daylight again approaches the question will be, what comes next?  Will he remain naked, exposed and free when the sun rises and the streets once again are filled with humans, traffic, foes and fear?  Or, will Chris redress, and again move closer to the earth the for shade, safety and security.  This is the question faced daily by so so  many as they face each and every new morning.

'When you face anxiety, fear, alienation and challenges, the pay-off can be sublime. Dancer, teacher and model Christopher Bell was able to express these challenges and triumphs through his body juxtaposed against the beautiful monster that is Manhattan. As Christopher falls to earth in front of my lens, I found catharsis and strength. This series is a tribute to anyone who has struggled for self-realization and self-fulfilment, with a wink and thanks to David Bowie’s The Man Who Fell To Earth.'

You want me to pose completely Neekid?'

'Ok Ok, maybe I can do.... Y
eah, I can do it, I can do it!'

'Ok, my pants are now down around my ankles.
Is it workin for you?'

Yeah, I would say it's working Charlie, working pretty damned well!   When I first saw Nick S82's images of Charlie, I knew I wanted to feature them on FH.  Nick has a knack for choosing incredibly naturally hot and interesting looking men, then letting his camera and skill do the rest.  Nick uses minimal props and post editing, and wants to share what he initially see's in his models transferred on for viewers to enjoy.

'Personality-wise, he's very laid-back and quite cheeky, easy to work with. He also quite a sexual person.'

Charlie is one of those guys sure to turn heads when walks down the street.  Great face, hot body and a sexy vibe you can almost feel coming from his images.  Originally from Norway, Charlie is a student, and new model that has a clear focus on fitness and maintaining his physique.  In addition to wanting to showcase Charlie's body, I also wanted to showcase that cheekiness that Nick referenced. Although I can't be sure what was going through Charlie's head in those first few images, I loved his expressive and hilarious facial expressions, as much as I enjoyed the full body shots, so wanted to ensure to include them. Now chemical engineer student, oh, and and male model Jefferson West looks pretty amazing with little or no clothes on, but one of my favorite images of Jefferson is the image above. His beautiful face and that sexy smirk of his hits me harder than some of his modeling images, amazing!

Jefferson is incredibly hot of course, but when spending time on his social media sites, I also loved his wit, charm and the quotes he often included with his images.  This man has it all and shares it with those who wish tumble with him, tweet him, or enjoy his visuals on Instagram!

I have always found CNN's Jason Carroll very good looking, but for some reason, this past week he was looking extra hot...  It might have been the casual white shirt he was wearing covering the California primaries.  It might have been that Jason was given some prime assignments, Trump in CA and the death of Muhammad Ali.  It was not a surprise reading his bio, that Jason was scouted by modeling agencies out of high school
