Handsome Devils: Behind the Scenes

I hasten to point out that it is against the studio’s genetic code to show our models in anything less than their very best. We’re not at all sure that “ghoulish” makeup meets that test. So that the viewers can appreciate the men beneath the makeup, we are including a handful of shots that the studio has done sans makeup. Our work with Mason in both New York and Hollywood will be released in early 2017, as will the most recent session with Ricardo, previewed here.
Wes, New Manhattan Studios

Ricardo is featured in two New Manhattan Studios publications, including a recent issue of Captured Shadows. Viewers wanting to see more of Ricardo (and dozens of other models) at New Manhattan Studios can click here.

Mason

'After you've gobbled him down you'd be left alone to regret it while covered in blood and guts. That's the hunger of a ghoul. That's our destiny.'
Tokyo Ghoul

New Manhattan Studio's gorgeous ghouls mark several returns to the site. The studio's images have been featured each of the last three Halloweens, and I am hoping it is now a firmly planted tradition! behind the impressive make-up you may also recognize Ricardo, a model from NMS that I featured several times in the past. If you didn't recognize Ricardo's face, I am sure the site of his impressive body rang a bell or two...

You may not recognize our first caped sexy beast, but behind the make up is model and actor Mason O'Sullivan, a model I featured several times between 2009 and 2011. When Wes first sent on some teasers from his Halloween shoot I barely recognized Mason, and it wasn't until Wes included his full name that it all came together!

I have to thank Ricardo, Mason and especially Wes for getting together to shoot a Halloween themed shoot exclusively for readers of FH. Although the images may depict hot menacing models, I think it may have been Wes who went a little batty with my Halloween requests and fighting against his impulse to always shoot models looking their very best! Even with the capes, props and make-up, Ricardo and Mason remain two incredibly handsome little devils!

Ricardo

Halloween 2016
by Wes, New Manhattan Studios

The Halloween session was long-discussed and planned for weeks. In the end it was a roll-with-the-punches imrov session with a sense of serendipity that I carried over into the editing. Mason one of the models I worked with in Los Angeles last month, was in town and we planned to do a studio shoot to follow-up on the work we did in a stunning home in the Hollywood Hills. I asked him if he’d be up to some Halloween-themed fun for part of his New York City session and he was all in.

As a back-up, I had lined up Ricardo, the body-building brother of our studio assistant and second cameraman, Alex. Ultimately I decided to shoot both models and booked their sessions back-to-back. The biggest problem that I had was that said assistant, Alex, was out of town. I had already put Mason on notice that he might be pressed into service prepping and steaming his wardrobe before the shoot. At the last minute, a talented young lady, who’s both an aspiring photographer and a makeup artist, was referred to me. She was able to arrive midway into Mason’s session so I seized the opportunity to use her makeup skills to add some ghoulishly-themed face paint.

Thanks to Ricardo’s early arrival, in the end we wound up with a couple of models in the studio at the same time and an unexpected chance to shoot the two of them on the paper together. It was a fleeting opportunity that ended within minutes when the clock expired on Mason’s session and he was off for an evening in New York, heading to his old stomping grounds on the trendy Lower East Side. Squeezing what was essentially 3 sessions with 2 models into 4 hours, would have been challenging enough. But taking another half hour out of the schedule for each make-up session severely limited the amount of time for any one session.

I was pleased that we were able to squeeze so much in, but I would have loved to have been able to work with the models to get something beyond the static set pieces that we had time to capture. I especially would have loved to have spent more time with the two models together but I am grateful that we had the six or seven minutes that allowed us to capture the handful of shots that we did. I am also grateful for the opportunity that this session provided for me to celebrate a red-letter date of the studio. Some of the photography that is now identified as early work for New Manhattan Studios was taken prior to 2011, but that Halloween was the day that I quit a previous job (and advertising career) to devote myself full-time to photography. It marked a return to my roots. I had started my career as a photojournalist and after years of commissioning, art-directing and supervising photography sessions, I intended to end my career by returning to the creative side of the camera.

Within months of hanging out the corporate shingle, Tye found the studio online and over the past five years his interest and support has had an outsized influence on both New Manhattan Studios and its creative product. I value his judgement, opinion and friendship, so I find it sweet that we can celebrate the studio’s five year anniversary with a gift of a Halloween session to celebrate Favorite Hunk’s tenth anniversary. Good going, Tye! Let me add my thanks to the thousands and thousands of photographers, models and fans that love the site. We wish you many, many more years of hot and favorite hunks!

'The reason I love Halloween is that unlike most holidays, Halloween is one you can make entirely your own. There are no pressures to decorate (which I do), or cook, (which I don't) there are no family meals or visits from the cousin you choose to avoid most of the rest of the year. There are no gifts to buy and there are not battles over whether the religious connection should or should not be in the play and you eat things you mostly try to avoid the rest of the year. Halloween is also the night you can dress as you would the rest of the year if only you could get away with it!'

Tye Briggs, FH (2012)

The hours between the end of school and heading out the door trick or treating almost had the feel of Christmas Eve. Excitement, anticipation and on October 31st, a wee bit of fear. I remember going out in the 80's, with my siblings, one hand holding my fathers hand, the other holding the plastic pumpkin. When I got old enough to go out with friends, my father remained at home and the plastic pumpkin had turned into a pillow case.

By the early 90's, I was still going out, but the pillow case was more of a suitcase for eggs and silly string and I joined my friends with the intentions of causing lots of trouble. Usually, the eggs ended up being smashed on the street, and the instinct to cause problems was over taken with the instinct to acquire as many mini kit kats as I possibly could.

Getting home was always anti-climatic, yet had it's own levels of joy. Taking off the costume, (and often the winter coat) putting my UNICEF box on the bureau, and piling the large quantities of candy onto my bed. I am sure I am not alone in separating the bars, the chips and candy kisses and disposing of any apples or tooth brushes that found their way into the bag. After trading with my siblings, (usually to get rid of the cheezies) the bars were eaten first. I love opening up those mini loot bags and seeing what was inside. Usually it was candy kisses and chiclets. I didn't eat that night were hidden in the back of my closet. Although it never did, I was always sure the candy was going to last me until Christmas!

Today Halloween is quite different. I still love it, but it's joy comes in the weekends that come before and after. Decorating, parties, trips to get a pumpkin and horror movie marathons. On Halloween night, I am usually rushing home to carve the pumpkin and give out candy for an hour or so. Then, I usually head to my best friends home and give out more candy and greet my God daughter when she returns from trick or treating. There is always a moment though, usually when I get back home later in the night. The wind is cool, the night, now quiet and that same feeling of arriving home with pillow case comes flooding back. Although I miss those childhood Halloweens, I never have to worry about running out of mini kit kats again...

One of the images below I have posted before, but went a-searching for more from the shoot. I never did find the source, but found two others from the series. If anyone knows anything more about the shoot, please let me know.

Paint Removal with DrDerrol

'I'm a dorky, dark haired, dark eyed, short, tattooed, shy guy. I work hard to become and embody whatever vision the photographer has.'

One of the best parts of Halloween, is putting on a costume and inhabiting a character. Many people, choose characters with physical attributes and personality traits far from our own. With Halloween now in the rear view window, it's now time to take off the costume, wash off the make-up and let go of the persona we lived in for the night. Sometimes that process can be a pain, but when the model is DrDerrol, and what is being removed is body paint, it can also be incredibly sexy and in an odd...kind of reverse way, equally transforming.

PURE is a story built around the small nation of Seyns. It is governed by 7 feuding Western defined families; each with unique characteristics. They are privileged. The privileged don the ornate clothing and jewelry of money, beauty, and corruption. Their golden exterior and sky blue eyes belie any preoccupation with altruism, for the commoners serve as mere stepping-stones to money, power and useless things.

Many of you might remember my post from earlier this year featuring YogaBear Studio's images of Anthony Dortch's The Pure. (HERE: DrDerrol joined Anthony and YogaBear Studio late last year for a session shooting the latest images of The Pure. After the shoot, the crew headed to the beach to wash off the body paint and the characters they had taken on in front of the camera. This 'washing off' was also worthy of chronicling and shot by photographer Greg Pulh.

'Working on 'The Pure' series with Tony Dortch and David Gray. I started working with Tony in 2012 as a live model in his art show (my friend called looking for someone who was comfortable wearing a harness so he called me haha!) I was nervous, but as soon as I was painted up and in costume, it was a great time! I got into my roll and went with it. At the time I didn't realize that it would become such a big part of my future! I feel very lucky to be a part of the project. It's a great story and I've made some life long friends from it! Also, working with David Gray has been amazing. The after effects he adds to the pictures like this picture of me and my Phoenix tattoo just blow my mind. He makes you look SO good!!'

Derrol Murphy (DrDerrol) describes himself as naturally shy, yet through his work as model is beautifully expressive. Like most us, life has dealt Derrol his fair share of of good times, as well as tough and painful times. So many of Derrol's life experiences are artistically chronicled in the body art that decorates so much of his body. Derrol's honoring and celebration of experience, is a source of both strength and protection and I was interested in the experience of covering his body art, and then removing the covering at the end of the shoot.

'During this shoot at Blacks I met a very cute guy and chatted with him quite a bit, all while painted yellow and naked. The odd part of it is if I wasn't painted I never would have been able to chat with him due to my extreme shyness (naked or not!) Also, hadn't really taken into consideration how much attention we'd draw on the beach and so many people took pictures of us and we took naked selfies with people which was a first for me...so my 'business' is out there floating around more than just within the project!'

I notice you're with Brockton, (whom I featured recently on FH), this seems like a very model focused shoot, What was it like stripping down, and washing off with a group of models? I would guess the vibe would be very different than in solo shoots with photographers.

'Yes! Brock is a really great guy! This past shoot was my third time working with him I believe and he definitely has helped talk me through some of my hangups and helped make me feel a bit more comfortable in y own skin and we've become friends through the process. I think the group setting, for me, is easier, the one on one can be difficult because I hate the focus being all on me, I get nervous and even shyer until I get to know you.'

'My first nude experience was actually a nude play. It was a very positive experience though I'm still not entirely sure how I did it!! It was a play called 'Party' by David Dillion. Performed it here in San Diego and New Orleans. I like to push myself out of my comfort zone so I just did it and it was a great experience!

'After that I did a lot of shoots where I would show my butt, but not frontal nudity. It has only been very recently I have done that. I had lots of hang ups about it. Family and friends seeing me naked, the worry of it being considered pornographic and I'm super self conscious, but I just decided the only way to get over it was just to do it and get it out there! I figure it's Art so it's ok! Haha!'

'I became involved in The Pure when I was contacted through a mutual friend in 2012 for Tony's project. Tony was in need of someone who felt comfortable (or could fake comfort well as in my case, lol) walking around half naked, painted and wearing a harness during his art show so I was contacted. I was nervous at first, being behind a camera and/or on stage is way different than being 'in the crowd' but I did it anyway and I'm glad I did! David and Greg I met later due to their connections to the project. I am Zebulon (Ze) Dolle'. Only son of Zephyr Dolle'. After being in the military I took the position of HR of Dolle' media. The media family all have drones but Tony wrote my drone in as a special Spider drone due to my real life love of spiders!'

'It was super weird having my tattoos covered. I consider my tattoos to also be a sort of armor for myself. It tells people my story and to have them gone was very interesting, like part of me was missing. Some in the project who did not meet me until the paint came off were shocked that I have so much tattoo work. Shooting the body paint removal was relatively new, we have DESTROYED many a bathroom and MANY towels during this project!! This was by far the easiest and quickest way to clean it off, though truth be told, you still find some paint on yourself days later!'

'I have come to realize that I let my shyness and social awkwardness hold me back from doing what I have wanted to do most of my life. Now that 40 is approaching in a very short year, I figure I better get it done now, no more time to waste!! Not that I mean I will stop after I hit 40, more like I will keep pushing onward to make up for time lost!! I have been trying to live the phrase "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway'...

A Fashionable Submersion: Mark by Gordon Nebeker

$

'Every photographer who picks up a camera has a motivation for shooting. For some, it is creating the perfect “commercial” shot; one that will sell well. While that thought undoubtedly crosses my mind on occasion, I shoot to please myself and to learn and develop (pun intended) as a photographer. If a print sells at one of my exhibitions, that is wonderful. but the very act of creating a photograph I am pleased with is in itself the reward and is the best ‘high’ of all.'

Not having to depend on one's art for financial stability can be incredibly liberating. Without the demands of a client or campaign, an artist can focus their creative impulses to generate images and works they are passionate about. Gordon Nebeker is clearly passionate about the male form, he has also devoted a lot of energy in perfecting his underwater imagery. When Massachusetts based model Mark approached Gordon about doing a clothed underwater shoot, an interesting photo story began to visually submerge.

Initial Connections:
'I first worked with Mark back in 2009 when he was a student in college and, as he was just temporarily in the area where I was living at the time, we only had one opportunity to shoot then. I have always regretted that and was very happy when our paths crossed again here in Boston and he was still interested in doing some modeling. We did our first new shoot last year just before Christmas and we agreed to do another shoot in the Summer when our pool was open as he was eager to try some underwater work. The photos in this article are from that shoot which we did this last August.'

Coming Together:
'In most of the shoots I do underwater, the model is nude or nude but working with a long white cloth I often used in my photography. The formula has served me well over the years but I am always willing to ‘mix it up’ a little to help keep the concept fresh. Mark wanted to do underwater work similar to what I have done before but was also quite keen to do some underwater photos where he would be fully dressed as kind of a fashion modeling concept. I agreed but threw in the caveat that he end the fashion shots with an underwater strip. And that is how this series of photographs came to be.'
Gordon

'I'm a very creative person who really enjoys doing the unexpected and challenging the normal so I'm always searching and trying to think of creative perspective on concepts. The inspiration came from a combination of a few pictures I found on Instagram, liking the lighting effect I saw in Gordon's other underwater photos, and wanting to add some fashion shots to update my portfolio. You wouldn't expect to see someone fully clothed in a formal style underwater, and the lighting brings the photo to an almost mystical place which I really like. Going into the shoot I had some ideas of how I wanted the photos to turn out, but like all shoots no matter how much you plan and calculate there are elements you don't account for and things get captured naturally and the concept develops as the shoot goes on, but it allows for a more organic photo and a lot of the time I end up liking those photos more than the outcome I had in my head before the shoot.'

Below the Surface:
'One of the elements of underwater photography which is most fascinating to me is how the surface of the water can act at times and angles like a camera lens, allowing one to view the world outside the pool like an impressionistic painting. At other times and angles, the surface acts as a mirror to reflect what is below the surface of the water which creates wonderful distorted and surreal images. You can see examples of both of these effects in this series and they are often my most favorite photographs when I do an underwater shoot.'
Gordon

'I have modeled underwear and body before. I enjoy all types of modeling, there has not been a style I have tried that I didn't enjoy. I really enjoy the shots that showcase the body but leave enough to the imagination of the audience for them to desire more but also enjoy the picture as a concept and not just focus on that specific area. Most of the difficulties for me come after the shoot because with any style or concept I tend to be more critical and hard on myself over small things than I need to be, such as how my looks too tense, my hair is a little messed up or wish i had done this slightly better.'
Mark

Gordon on working with Mark:
'Mark is a real trooper! He is enthusiastic and willing to try a pose even when I can tell he is not so sure about it. Sometimes his instincts are right and those photos never see the light of day but sometimes the photos turn out better than either of us expected and that makes the risk worth taking. He is a genuinely nice guy and a pleasure to work with. It has also been nice to see him become friends with several of my models and I guess I need to start planning a group shoot!'

Mark on working with Gordon:
'Working with Gordon is great, he is such a good person and makes you feel comfortable weather its your first time shooting with him or your tenth. I like that he is open to some of my crazy ideas and makes it more of a collaboration than just what he wants. Yes, working with Gordon now is very different than the first time I worked with him. When I first worked with Gordon I was 19 and it was a couples shoot I did with an ex. My ex set up the shoot as a surprise to me because he knew I modeled and he wanted to see what it was like ha ha. It was fun but I was caught off guard and not prepared that day, the shoot was also less fluid in my opinion because my ex had never modeled and i had to coach him.  Working with Gordon now, we have developed an understanding of how the other works. I know I can move and transition and and Gordon will capture a great shot without me having to go pose to pose. Working with him is just very organic and I think it shows in our photos.'

A Different Kind of Salvation by TR Pics

'I've always wanted to shoot kind of a risque wink to how religion treats gay people.'

When I was looking for images to celebrate FH's 10th, I knew I wanted to return to Dallas photographer Tom Rubeck (TR Pics) and his images of model Vincent WolFang. When I was working on that piece (Ten: Favorite) Tom shared his newer work with Vincent, as well as some shots from the first FH piece on Vincent from 2011.

In that 2011 story, (Right Before The Lens) there was a brief preview of this Book of Mormon series featuring Wolfgang and model John DLS. Tom first shot Vincent back in August of 2011 while Vincent was visiting a friend in Texas. Tom describes the their first collaboration as going exceedingly well and before it ended, Vincent ran an idea for a future shoot by him.

'I've always wanted to shoot kind of a risque wink to how religion treats gay people, and I have an idea about a religious person coming to the door of a guy fresh out of the shower, and how he gets seduced. Do you have any models we could shoot this with?'

As Vincent had only one more day in Texas, and it was a bit last minute, Tom contacted his friend and model, John DLS and pitched him the idea. John was game, but wanted to meet with Vincent first. The meeting went well and Tom reports they hit it off very well.

'The shoot took place at my house because I was a little unsure as to how "explicit" it might get, and I didn't want to get into any "issues" with any of the other places I normally shoot. It was fun, and very collaborative for the three of us. And as with any real "seemingly erotic" shoot, the choreography, light placement, and staging really brings you back to reality: more work than lust. Still, the guys had chemistry!'

'After the shoot, we decided on a few more places around the house to shoot, including my pool. While there, we got some incredible shots of both guys on my waterfall. They were lovely, and a bonus to this first shoot. During the editing of the pics, I chose to create my own kind of "glowy" filter. Although I look back at it now and don't really love it, at the time I wanted to convey a sense of an aural atmosphere. It was a fun experiment, but I think the non-edited pics speak for themselves.'

'It's been nice to go back and examine this work. I really was just starting out with this new hobby of photography back then, and with this shoot pushed myself a bit and made some good friends. A great experience, and I'm really appreciative of Tye and his blog for featuring my work. Hopefully there's lots more to come!'
