The Weakest Link?

'Once i was a selfish fool, Who never understood
never looked inside myself, Though on the outside, i looked good!'

Link, Hairspray

Ever since Carrie Underwood Pia Zadora'd her way through through NBC's first live musical, The Sound of Music, hate watching has become a part of watching the yearly event. It was understandable, Underwood's singing was amazing, but her acting was painful at times. With the following years Peter Pan with Christopher Walken, the trend of hate watching was cemented.

The problem became, that last years The Wiz, and this years Hairspray, were pretty great productions. I really couldn't find a bad thing to say about Hairspray, except for the odd lighting and technical gaff. The cast as a whole was incredible, with Maddie Baillio Harvey Fierstein, Martin Short, Kristin Chenoweth, Dove Cameron and the incredible Jennifer Hudson all putting in amazing performances. I also loved seeing Rosie O'Donnell and Andrea Martin, both who appeared with Fierstein on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof, in smaller roles. Derek Hough was great as well, but I can't think of anyone sexier than James Marsden movin and a groovin as Corny.

Yet the on-line hate was out and fierce last night. People not enjoying the show, but instead typing that Hudson was yelling her songs, Fierstein is no Travota (thank GOD!) and Chenoweth is mugging to much. Chenoweth does mug, but to me, part of her charm. Much of the hate went to Garrett Clayton who played Link.

Clayton in King Cobra

Many complained the character was too generic and bland, and Clayton couldn't sing. The role was a bit boring and generic, as many male roles often are in musicals. Although there are many exceptions, musicals tended to have much better roles for female characters, and many older musicals had the bland, but good looking male counter part as a balance.

With most motion pictures doing the opposite, women deserved their special place on stage. I thought Clayton spray tan and heavy make-up aside, was perfect for Link. With Jennifer Hudson and Kristin Chenoweth belting away, it would be hard to stand out vocally, especially since Link was written to be a big 'singing part' he was written to look, and dance in a way to warrant Tracy's crush. Clayton manged it all, specially his gyrating and twisting just fine thank you. Zac Efron looked great in the movie version, but obviously wasn't a master singer either, given they cut, or choose not to film, most of Link's songs in the film.

I had been planning a piece on model Andrew Biernat for awhile now. This week however, after finding out he is the featured model for Marco Marco, the time seemed beautifully right. Check out much more of Andrew in various colors and styles of underwear on Marco Marco HERE:

Today's post, featuring more of artist Robert Colgan's work with Michael is a perfect example of why I created the FH OVER-FLOW. I'm not referencing the two images you see here, they are additional shots I really loved from Robert and Michael's shoot on the rail road car and in the abandoned water and power plants which I featured in October. (Location, Location, Location) In addition to exploring the inside of the power plant, Michael has also been pushing his boundaries, and exploring his sensuality and sexual freedom in front of the camera. Check out the results of his journey on The OVER-FLOW.

About A Boy: Jeremy by msbimages

So... there's this boy...

I think we all knew a Jeremy when we were in school. Friendly, non-threatening and busy. Played a sport, but just one, as he worked. In the grocery store on weekends, and with his dad on cars most of the rest of the time. He was nice to everyone, but although confident and mature, focused more on video games and his friends than he did on girls. At least in public. He was obsessed with girls when alone, but his lack of confidence prevented him from asking one out until grade 12. After the first date, they were in love, and remained together the rest of the school year.

You barely knew him, yet he always said hi when he passed you in the hallway. You didn't think he noticed you, but he grabbed your yearbook and wrote a nice note about your role in the high school musical. When someone called you a 'fag' he didn't cause a scene, but gave you a supportive smile and made it a point to say hello loud enough so that the person who called you the name, could see you were not alone and had back up.

You always thought he was cute, but after getting that girlfriend, his smile was even wider and he walked with a bit more confidence. Most noticeable, he finally grew out that face stubble into a fairly decent and full mustache and goatee. The new facial hair, and new the hair mousse his girlfriend bought him, turned Jeremy from a nice cute guy at school, to a guy who's 'hi's' in the hallways suddenly started to make you both nervous, and excited when you would see him walking towards you in the hallway.  All of a sudden when the gym teacher yelled 'shirts and skins' you looked around hopefully that Jeremy was on the skin side of the gym.

My high school Jeremy was actually a 'Todd'. I went to school with Todd from primary on, but we never really had much to do with each other except for school. Yet, we spent hours together in the same classroom year after year, sang in the same Christmas concerts, and often stood next to each other in our class pictures. He was someone I paid little attention to, and it was surprising and sweet to me, that when we talked a few times in high school, he remembered more about some of our common experiences, common friends, and common memorable moments than I did.

When I asked Michal Boothe about Jeremy, he most vivid memory was that Jeremy brought his older brother to the shoot for support, and that Michal ensured to capture Jeremy's smile, something he doesn't do with every model he shoots. Given the limited back story, I was going to do a small intro, and just let Michal's images speak for themselves. But Michal doesn't just capture bodies, he captures people, and when I spent time with Michal's extraordinary portrait shots, staring into Jeremy's kind eyes, and as mentioned, that goatee, his resemblance to Todd was all I could think of.

I then went on to do a facebook search for Todd. The facial hair, and the hair mousse appear to be long gone,  His high school girlfriend gone as well, shortly after he graduated if I remember correctly. I remember he went to community college to study mechanics, but his FB page states he is certainly selling, not repairing, cars.   His profile image included a new wife, and new baby both of whom seem to be a part of maintaining the spark in his beautiful eyes, and his sweet sweet smile which were as striking as I remember.

This past summer, I discovered the work of London photographer Sergio Canteros (TheArmouredEye) The shot below is the image that grabbed me, and had me reaching out to Sergio about a piece. I loved the pose, the drama, the light and shadows that beautifully roled over the models back muscles, legs and butt. The fact the model was tied and wearing a black hood, had me wanting to explore more of the story of the shot. Sergio was on board, but unfortanately, lost all but one other images (the one above) when his old computer died. I am going to consider these two images a 'coming attraction', with a longer main feature focused on Sergio's work to follow!

Water Moves by Hans Fahrmeyer

'If photos are messages, then Hans Fahrmeyer is one of the most prolific messengers of today and classic times. From his apprentice days of learning his photography craft in the lost art of darkroom developing, you know this man can wrestle more out of an image than most emerging and long term photographers. It's his use of the lens, light, experience and passion which massages his images to an unexpected portrayal.'

Water...
From the waves of the Atlantic ocean, to the glistening surface of the the swimming pool.
From the soapy bathtub, to the heat and pulse rushing from the shower head.
To the drops of sweat dripping across your neck, back and slowly down your butt crack.
The moist and sensual feel as water moves over a hot, sexy and acutely ready body.

Today, with Twitter, tumblr and hundreds of other sites, images of naked bodies abound. For many, this is a great thing, having an endless supply of penis pictures to enjoy. The downside however is the lack of creativity and quality that comes with an overabundance of orgasmic stimulation. With so many images, the bodies cease to be actual men, and the human piece man becomes secondary to girth, length and level of erection.

One of the reasons I annoyingly add so many words around the images I feature is to ensure the hu is always connected to man. That the models have names and that the images were created through the hard work and passion of the artists and photographers who created them. When I first started searching the net for images of the male form, there were a few sites, and a few artists whose work brought me back to their images again and again.

WATER MOVES from Hans Fahrmeyer on Vimeo.

Artists who didn't just photograph butts and penises, but models, with names and personalities. I remember frequently going back to a site I know many of you have gone to in the past. VistaVideo was the place I first discovered the work of New York photographer and artist Hans Fahrmeyer. Hans and his images on Vista introduced many of us to many models, the most well known being Marcel and Phil Fusco.

Hans' images were bold, colorful and unabashedly sexual. The images were intended to evoke desire, and Marcel, Phil, and so many of the models Hans shot openly welcomed the viewers desire. This may sound simple, but it surprising how many photographers and models I have contacted about FH are uncomfortable with viewers lusting after an image or a specific model. There are many photographers who though all of their work is of naked men, want to discuss the images ad if they shot a tulip or a kitten.

Hans Fahrmeyer is not one of those photographers. His images drip with desire, creativity, color and passion. Hans has introduced me to so many models and images that have continued my own passion for the male form in art. In addition to Marcel and Phil, Hans's work has sparked my following the careers of Nick Ayler, Santiago Peralta, Nick Pizzaro, Eddy, Roman and Phat Daddy. Models and images that spark a desire to not only see, but learn more about the man in front of, and behind the lens. This desire to me, is the nucleus for my love of great imagery. All of these features, and all of the models mentioned are a part of Hans new work Water Moves, A collection of hundreds of image and close to 160 pages dripping with unabashed desire.

Blast from the Past: Totally Rad!

A couple of years ago, I did a Blast from the Past post, asking FH readers for suggestions of actors, singers and performers to feature in the series. The Internet is immensely fascinated with who's 'hot at the moment', but one of my goals with FH, was to also spotlight talented and beautiful men who were important parts in the history of our lives.

A FH reader wrote in with a couple of suggestions, none of whom I really had memories of. Although a little googling told me who they were, some were before my time. I find it difficult sometimes to write about actors whom I don't actually have a connection with. I oddly need to have seen a movie or project that touched me to want to write and research their images and career.

At the top of the site readers list was actor Rad Daly. Rad rose to fame in the 70's, and worked steadily on television and film in the 80's. Roles became scarce after that, with a small role in Crimson Tide his only IMDB credit for the 90's. In the last couple of years, Rad appears to be working a bit more, and has a few projects coming out in the next year. I remember Rad a bit from teen magazines in the late 80's, but wasn't sure I had actually seen any of his work, until last week.

One of my many movie channels was playing '10' a few months ago, and I DVR'd it since the movie is so well known and I had not seen it before. 1979's 10 put Bo Derek on the map and although I had certainly had heard of the movie, knew it mostly from images of Bo Derek running along the beach. I had time to watch it on the weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dudley Moore and Julie Andrews put in great performances, and Bo, and her beach running, were not as big a part of the movie as I had thought. In addition, we got a few scenes of the incredibly hot Sam Jones as Bo's husband.

The movie also included a few scenes featuring a cute kid playing Julie Andrews son. I remembered that face from a my searches on Rad after the blog reader had asked me to feature him. Now... with an actual movie and role that I had watched, I was inspired to to go back to the blog readers suggestion. Rad was, and is a hottie, and was quite good in his supporting role in 10. I will have to check out his other work, as there are a few old TV shows on his resume, I have always wanted to check out.

Christmas Countdown: Bryce by Alex Hilbert

It's that time of year that FH breaks out holiday themed images from some of my favorite photographers of the male form. First up is beautiful Bryce shot by California fashion and fitness photographer Alex Hilbert.

I fell in love with Alex's work after first discovering his portfolio this past spring.  Alex has an incredible eye for talent, and always manages to bring out something beautifully unique in the models he captures.

Bryce has the most beautiful eyes and skin and looks fetchingly festive in his Santa hat and Rudolph undies.   From his beautiful face, down to his sexy body and 'red nose,' I think most of us would like to come down stairs on December 25th to find this sexy Santa hanging out by the fireplace mantle.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

Good to Go: Jacob by ShutterClickPhx

'Model turned photographer here....'

So the hot guy in the first image isn't Jacob. Jacob, and his incredible images, are the 14 shots that follow. The sexy face, eyes and arms belong in that first shot belong to Jeff, the photographer behind ShutterClickPhxwho so creatively captured Jacob. Whenever I feature an artist, I strive to provide a bit of back story, and given Jeff's back story includes a long and successful modeling career, the image, and Jeff's experience as a model, provide such beautifully essential perspective.

Most models, who move to the other side of the lens, bring their unique experiences to both their work, and their interactions with the men they shoot. There is not a model alive, who hasn't at one time or another, been on shoots, and worked with clients, agents and the odd photographer who treated them 'less than'. A face, a body, just product to be shot and used without considering that they're a important creative piece of the project and final images. Models know what it's like to stand their under studio lighting, often for hours wearing very little or nothing at all. Vulnerable, and dependent on others to ensure the hard work, and final images do them justice.

I could feel right away talking with Jeff that his experiences in front of the camera, were a part of how he now acted holding it. There was not only a respect for the men he shot, but that he formed relationships with them, friendships that go along with co-workers who value the contribution of the other. His goal is simple, to make the men he is shooting look amazing. Jeff has been a model most of his adult life. He had a very successful career, and lived and worked in Paris for 8 years. By the time he turned 35, Jeff had visited and worked in over 100 countries. When he retired from the industry a few years ago, Jeff picked up a camera, initially as a hobby and began shooting guys.

'I have always taken photographs… but up until 3 years ago, I was only shooting nature, landscapes, indigenous people, buildings, things like that. But when I started finding models to shoot, I think my history of being a model really helped me understand how I wanted to shoot the male form. I shoot fast. I know what I want, and how to get it. In fact.. if you look at all the models in my port… I’ve never done a shoot that lasted over an hour. I love shooting on a blank palette, no clutter… and perhaps only use a prop… but for the most part, less is more. And.. I only use natural light. All I really need is a window, and a blank wall… and we are good to go!!'

I first discovered Jeff's work as a photographer after seeing one of his images of Jacob in the spring of 2015. I contacted Jeff, but the timing didn't work out at the time. But... timing is a funny thing. Each of the last two years, when putting together the Utah Features, Jeff's name came up. In both of the last two years, Mark from studio MG photography credited Jeff with pulling together the three models who joined Mark, Gordon Nebeker and Mike Tossy on the shoot. After doing this years stories, I decided it was time to get in touch with Jeff once again. This time, the timing worked out perfectly. When I wrote the piece on the 2016 Utah shoot, I mentioned that I had previously done stories on both Nathan and Patrick, but thus far, had not done a piece on Jacob. Thanks to Jeff, I get to complete my hat-trick featuring the men of Lake Powell with this magnificent series of images.

I love how Jeff frames and shoots the models he works with. Jeff has what I call a 'body wave' shot that goes from the top of a models head down to about their knee's. The poses, shapes and curves Jeff captures are visually interesting, and unique, but also incredibly erotic, not because of what body part you see, but because of how the artist and model display, and present them. Jacob lights up in front of the camera, and has incredibly beautiful hazel eyes and a great body, and body part. Jeff doesn't just capture those individual parts, but skillfully uses his creativity to create a distinctly strong and sexy series of images.

'As for the models I collaborate with, I am very clear with my direction, and I think any model you ask that has worked with me, would tell you the same thing. I tell the model exactly what to do.. where to look… tilt of the head, very subtle changes between each frame. I’m very hands on, where I will place the models hand exactly where I want it. And as far as shooting nudes… I never set out to shoot nudes. I love shooting the male form, and as I mentioned earlier.. less is more when it comes to wardrobe. I do not like branding at all.. so I try to find simple underwear with very little printed on them. Not a huge fan of any patterns, unless I am shooting a head shot, or portrait.'

'With a head shot, I LOVE a touch of pattern… mainly plaids. I think you will find that consistency in my port. I never ask a model to get naked. I leave that completely up to them, if they want to shoot nudes, or implied nudes. It’s funny… before the shoot, many guys have expressed that they did not want to shoot nudes. But as the shoot went on… many of those guys really got into it, and the clothes started coming off. I just keep shooting… I leave it completely up to them, as far as they want to take it. I think the models I shoot, immediately fall into a comfort zone with me. I think they soon realize that I am the ultimate professional, and I take my work very seriously. They soon realize that I do not have any ulterior motive with my models. In this business.. I hear so many stories from models who have worked with photographers, who have pulled some sleazy moves. That never happens when I shoot… in fact, I’ve had a few models hit on ME while shooting, LOL. It’s all good. We always have fun with the shoots, and every one always has a great time.'

'As far as setting up a shoot with a model…. I have VERY little patience. If they are serious about shooting… let’s do it. I have never paid a model. Never. This is a hobby.. and if a model likes what they see in my port, and wants to add my photos to their port… then it’s a mutual collaboration. Nothing drives me more insane, than when I hit up a model who has 4 selfies in a dirty mirror.. and they reply with a ridiculous “rate” for shooting. Really? 4 selfies in a mirror, and you want 400.00 to shoot?? NEXT!! But I love finding guys on Model Mayhem with really weak ports. I see guys, and I know I can make them look amazing.'

'And then there is Jacob. I love this man. He also had a few, dated, weak photos in his port on Model Mayhem. I contacted him in Phoenix asking if he was interested in shooting. He was SO easy to set it up. No drama… a simple “Yes.. let’s do it” And we shot a day later.. and got incredible photos. Then a few days later he called me and said he just dyed his hair dark brown, and I said “get back here!! Let’s shoot you with dark hair” and so we did. 2 shoots within a week of each other, and 2 very different looks. We had so much fun shooting, and he is a total natural in front of the camera. He really needed very little direction. We both got into the groove, and we just went with it. I can tell you something else about Jacob…. he is one of the sweetest guys you could ever meet. Soft spoken… almost comes across as shy, but clearly he is not shy at all. He’s a great guy, and I’m proud to call him a good friend. We are planning another shoot out in Palm Springs the beginning of the new year.'

Christmas Countdown: Ornamentals by studio MG photography

Some long time readers might recognize studio MG photography's Christmas tree's from a holiday post back in 2010. (The Spirit of Giving) Mark shares that the tree's actually had a dual purpose. In addition to festive props for some fun holiday shots, given the tree's were thin and fairly compact, they could be stored in a closet from year to year. So.. some of the tree's ended up in the homes of others, including the living rooms in he and Mike's mothers homes.

I didn't ask if their moms knew the tree's now standing in their living rooms once had other things hung on, and beside their branches, but my guess is it wouldn't have mattered. Given Mark was one of the reason's behind my intro to Jeff, the artist I am featuring in the post below this one, I thought today a great day revisit some of my favorites from his holiday shots.
