Bruises, Burns, and Scrapes: Austin Tacious by Daniel Peebles

I have always been fascinated by circus. I especially love reading abut the lives of the circus performers who travelled with the circus in the late 1800's through the end of the 1960's. The circus was often a haven for the outcasts, the freaks and the forgotten and the life of the performers was not an easy one. Hard, long and repetitive work with months on the road in cramped and dirty surroundings. These images of Austin by photographer Daniel Peebles look like they may have been shot in the 20's or 30's and beautifully capture the tone feel of the time and the life of a circus performer.

'I was told that Daniel was looking to photograph performers so I got a hold of him to see what exactly he was looking fo. The day of the shoot was pretty fun. We set up shop in a warehouse where I rig my hoop and chains to practice. We went through a lot of poses shooting digitally and eventually found a pose we wanted to shoot on film. While we were shooting on film I had to hold the pose for a few minutes which was a bit challenging be because I was bearing a lot of weight by the back of my heel, but it was no big deal, I tend to tear myself up a lot doing circus. A lot of bruises, burns, and scrapes. Daniel is a lot of fun to work with, really laid back. I hope I get the chance to work with him again soon. I think my favorite modeling moment so far has been seeing myself hanging in a gallery for a show in which Daniel Peebles was participating.'

Primeval: Austin Tacious by Max Woltman

'When I was in kindergarten, I remember crying when my teacher informed me that I, in fact, couldn’t be a dinosaur when I grew up. It was a pretty hard pill for baby me to swallow.'

Although his interests have varied a bit since wanting to be a dinosaur, there remains something mystical, almost primal in nature about model Austin Tacious. It might be the mutton chops, or maybe as Max Woltman noted, it stems from his eyes. There is an intelligence and wisdom exuding through those eyes, his body, and the poses and movements he makes.

With prehistoric creatures not in the cards, Austin turned to a more attainable pursuit, martial arts. He has been studying and practicing the discipline for close to 23 years. Although he had always dreamt at one day competing in the Olympics, as he has gotten older, Austin's urge to participate in competition has dwindled and instead it is performance that has taken over as a passion. In middle school, Austin was introduced to music and loved it. He stayed with it and was briefly a music major in college. Eventually he began to feel he simply didn’t have what it would take so began to pursued other fields of study. When he was about 15 years old, Austin was first exposed to Cirque du Soleil and was completely captivated from the get go. Although music may not have worked out, he still know that he wanted to perform. As time went out the desire never waned, instead only increased in its intensity. Austin decided that he wanted to actually audition for cirque, but wanted to expand his skill set before doing so.

'A friend of mine happened to know of some aerialists that practiced in one of the theaters at our university and introduced me. As soon as I left the ground I fell in love and never wanted to come back down. After practicing with them for a while they asked me to be part of a burlesque show and thought, “Hey, why not?” I wound up having a lot of fun and, later on, started my own all-male burlesque troupe.'

Being a performer most of his life, stepping in front of the camera was a natural step for Austin. Austin has known Albuquerque photographer Max Woltman for half of his live having been close friends with Max's sister for years. Austin says one of the greatest contributing factors to deciding to take it all off was insecurities about his body. Specifically, he wanted to take a step to combat and confront those insecurities and there was no one better to that with than someone not only skilled, but someone he trusted behind the camera. Although it worked out beautifully, Initially, being such good friends made things a little more nerve wracking.

'Abstractly I had thought of doing nude shoots before and thought that the photographer would be someone I have not met prior which would give a certain degree of anonymity and distance in a way. Max is unreasonably talented and very well may be the kindest person on the planet. I trust Max completely and has a way of making me feel totally comfortable, even when I am bent over backwards naked on a wooden barstool. I was in a safe environment, working with someone I trust, and... had a bit of wine. The results of the shoot were very well received when I finally posted them, which was a big relief for me!'
Austin Tacious

'Austin's eyes were the first thing I noticed about him. Thoughtful and focused, Austin possesses discipline, drive, and athleticism. In addition to being a model, he is also a skilled aerialist, dancer, and performance artist. Drawing inspiration from his wealth of knowledge about history and mythology, Austin always brings specific ideas to every photo shoot I have done with him. He is passionate and fearless and his desire to continually strive to be better inspires me to become a better photographer and artist.'

As far as body parts that garner attention, Austin agrees that hands down it would be his eyes that most people comment on. 'An ex of mine said that my eyes gave me a strange intensity and my gaze had a weight to it, almost like a lion or wolf. It was a pretty cool compliment to receive.' For Austin himself, it would be the musculature of his upper back. 'I just think it is one of the most interesting parts of my body to view.' For me, it was the entire package, Austin's incredible body of course but also that intensity within Austin's face and eyes. The intensity is strong, even fierce, but at the same time almost peaceful. I especially love how Max captured it within the shower shots with the water running down his face, certainly my favorites from this series. I also could not help but ask about the mutton chops as not many men call pull them off a well as Austin does. Although he was recently cast as Wolverine for an upcoming act, Austin has had the chops for the last couple of years.

Although maybe just a small thing their own, the chops seem to be a part of something bigger. Along with some of the other characteristic, Austin's eyes, the intensity mentioned, all help to make up that magical primeval quality that Austin so beautifully embodies within his life, his look, and most certainly his images.

Leigh Carter: Skin

You might think that in the world of photographing of the male form, the ability to skillfully shoot skin would be a given. Not always so... There are some great images of models that just don't work because the look of the model's skin was secondary to how much skin was being shown. This is not a problem for Southampton's Leigh Carter. I have been following Leigh's work on FH since 2009 and one of the things I love about Leigh's work is his ability to capture skin. Leigh not only shows us plenty, especially on his site boy:gender, he also beautifully presents every inch of skin on the men in front of his camera. No matter what the shade or body shape, Leigh places them on sheets and in front of backgrounds and lights, captures and edits the most incredible images of skin

Leigh has compiled some of his greatest images, and some of my favorite models in his first book, SKIN: The photo book, features over 40 stunning guys in their birthday suits. Spread across 92 pages of premium lustre paper and bound in a hardcover with dust jacket. You can check out a preview and order your own copy HERE:

SKIN is the title of Leigh Carter's much anticipated anthology of beguiling male nudes at their most naked and sensuous best. A distillation of the finest images from his widely admired Boy:gender collection, the pages between these covers will deliver an uplifting treat for all admirers of the male form.

Featuring a rich diversity of men from the boyish to the masculine, they are presented here at their most relaxed. Free of the concerns of the outside world and under the warm glow of the photographer's lights, these awesome charmers are displayed as nature intended them to be. As solitary, muscled figures emerging out of the shadows as marvellous new man-scapes the male eye will long to chart. Each picture is a private and intimate moment to which the viewer is granted exclusive access; these are surely images to spend time in the company of.

Leigh Carter follows in the spirit of the photographic greats that have inspired him, such as Mapplethorpe, Gorman, Vance and Freeman. With this exciting volume he proves himself a natural and talented observer who revels in the aura of mystery that surrounds the naked male figure.

Overalls: Joey by studioAtruong

'We often miss opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work'
Thomas A. Edison

Being able to feature these image of 22 year old Joey Conti wasn't an opportunity I was going to miss. When I first contacted Alain, the photographer behind studioAtruong, and these shots of Joey, he was also on board with featuring Joey as the model to feature his amazing work.

Alain's focus is on shooting the male nude, and believes the male body is more beautiful than anything else we could possibly drape on it. Although I whole heartedly agree, I love this set of images with the overalls draping over Joey's beautiful body. Alain has captured so many different looks with just the one piece of clothing Joey that was almost wearing.

I always say that choosing a final 10 or 15 images for a feature is usually the difficult task when putting something together for FH. With Alain's work with Joey, there were almost 600 incredible shots to choose from! Overwhelming yes, especially since almost every image he shot of Joey weas close to perfect. I was only able to choose, when I finally began separating them into looks and themes. For some reason, the images with Joey, in and out of the overalls, became the ones I wanted to begin with. Don't worry though, there are many more images with other looks and themes Alain has welcomed me to share, so look for more of them soon!

Alain says his goal is to keep challenging himself with more creative and beautiful photos, pushing limits, challenging the status quo, and to never stop learning and improving as a photographer. The San Francisco photographer has been shooting portraits for almost 3 years and says he is loving every minute that he gets time to shoot. Alain, like many artists, began with landscape work but soon became bored with the lack of life, or maybe other lives, involved in creating landscape images.

With a B.S. in Physics and an M.B.A. in Finance, Alain says photography is his way of seeing and thinking creatively and a great balance for the analytical work he does for a living: From early on in his childhood, Alain was influenced by the art works that his architect father always had around the house. He has always paid attention to people's facial features and could often be found drawing them in pencil or charcoal.

'Needless to say, when I discovered my first DSLR (a Canon), I was besides myself with joy to realize I could wield the apparatus to capture portraits of people. Though I find taking nude portraits of fit, young male models absolutely thrilling, I derive the greatest pleasure from taking pictures of a beautiful face!'

Although he doesn't do photography for a living, Alain says that he takes it very seriously and considers himself a perfectionist. Alain says he spends much of his spare time reading up every possible technique that he can learn. 'I want to show up to a photo shoot prepared, do everything right in the camera, and try to spend as little time as possible fixing problems in post-processing.' Professionalism and mutual respect are very important to him within his work and relationships with the models he shoots.

'Joey is blessed with a face can turn heads in a room full of a young, hot models.'

Last year, while attending a model boot camp as a photographer, Alain's eyes were immediately fixated on a young, just 20 at the time, chiseled, green-eyed model. After shooting him and other models as part of their training, Alain shared with Joey the head shots he taken of him and handed the new model his contact card. Joey was so happy with the head shots he wanted to continue working with Alain in a one-on-one shoot. Alain says the shoot that followed was one of the best he has had to date.

'Joey had the facial bone structure and body that many men would kill to have. He also possessed a model's instinct to move and pose in ways that best showcase him with minimum directions - although, in all fairness, I'd say it would be hard to find a bad angle on Joey. It would be difficult to have to choose Joey's best features since he was (and still is - I assume) all around perfect: Beautiful green eyes, chiseled cheek bones, sexy lips, perfectly defined pecs, biceps, triceps, round shoulders, and cut, eight-pack (yes, I counted) abdominals.'

'And...if I must, I have to say he also has the best bubble butt I have ever seen. Post processing his photos was the easiest thing to do: A little clean-up here and there, and some croppings. Absolutely NO enhancements (Photoshop) were necessary to improve on his cut and perfect body or face. Joey was simply a dream male model! For an amateur (yes, I do have a regular day job in the corporate world) yet very serious photographer, I consider myself very fortunate to have had the chance to shoot him.'

I have loved Chris Messina since I was first introduced to him on Six Feet Under. In order to bring you the best of my favorite's I have presented posts featuring Chris naked on that show, and on Damages (HERE:) and even full frontal in the movie 28 Hotel Rooms (HERE:).

Even though fully clothed however, I am not sure Chris has ever looked hotter than dancing to Aaliyah’s ‘Try Again’ on this week's The Mindy Project. Check out his moves below!

There is a clear difference between not liking something and choosing to publicly bash it...

On any given night, watching television usually revolves around fighting housewives, bachelors or bachelorettes, dancing celebrities and a Kardashian or two. If you don't count reality, the rest of the television landscape is usually full of procedurals, dozens a week featuring every possible way to murder, maim or decapitate a body. Every 'creative' way to sexually assault torture it, and any other type of pain these tv writers can dream up. Even my favorite shows are full of Mothers abusing their children, heads in boxes, zombies and vampires.

Last night NBC tried something different. Something huge and difficult and not done in decades. Something I wish we could more of. A musical, and live at that! It was far from perfect, there issues with casting, nerves and production. As a person who spent time in the theatre however, especially in musicals, I could relate to every issue that popped up. Weak voices and casting (Olivia in Grease, Whitney in The Bodyguard) where singing voice trumps acting chops when it comes t the lead. I doubt Streisand is planning a live version of Funny Girl or Lapone a live Sunset, especially if they saw the way Undewood was ripped to shreds last night.

I still enjoyed it however. Not great, but good and when the nerves settled, the show got better and better as it went along. It had that incredible score, beautiful orchestration and mostly stellar vocals (which took up about 80%) of the musiccal. Just the fact something new was being tried should be applauded. I am becoming decreasingly depressed at the internet who users seem to be more and more made up of people whose main goal is to tell people they are too fat, too stupid, too untalented to be as successful as they have become. The hate last against some parts of the show was another example of how we are all turning not just into critics, but nasty critics, trying to one up each other with our witty ways of saying something SUCKS. Although the production was flawed, most night what's left in my head after watching tv is the visual the latest way someone was offed. Last night, and today, it is The Lonely Goatherd I can't get out of my head. Thank you NBC for trying something not only different, but also needed within the television landscape.

Post-Halloween
Quinn Christopher Jaxon by JayBee

'Quinn was absolutely a doll to work with...amazing body, but also an amazing person'

Each artist's images that I feature inspire me in different ways, some hit memories from my past, some touch things I am going through in the present. Some hit specific emotions and some simply arouse. From the minute I discovered the work of JayBee from Frisky Frolic I was taken back to elementary school. Not because of any childlike quality but because Jay taps into a creativity, one most of us lose as we grow older.

The type of creativity we all had in our fifth grade art class. In those days we loved getting wet and dirty working with paper mache, creating molds and puppets and all forms of creations from an imagination not yet dampened with the realities of the world. We used color boldly and the brighter the better. It was a creativity both unlimited and brave.

This limitless feeling always strikes me when spending time at Frisky Frolic. We all have memories (all of us) of tying that big bath towel around our neck and pretending to be Superman (or maybe Wonder Woman...). Maybe we even did it while in our underoos! So many erotic images of the male forum are so mature and serious that I love the contrast in feel (and the frisky and the frolic) within JayBee's work.

These images of FH favorite Quinn Christopher Jaxon were taken as part of a fun Halloween themed shoot in October, but I didn't want to wait until next Halloween to post them. The images are a great example of why I so love JayBee's work. Colorful, fun and with the unabashed creativity we all should tap into a little more.

Above: Fred from Randy/Toons

'Fred pushed Shaggy down on the couch roughly, breaking the kiss. He took in the sight of Shaggy. The way his chest rose and fell due to his erratic breathing, the way his eyes were glazed over with lust, the slightly parted pink plump lips, and his member standing erect. Fred wanted to take him right there and then, but decided he would have a little fun first.'

I don't usually read fan fiction, especially cartoon fan fiction... but on this cold and windy Sunday, reading about Fred and Shaggy was enough to inspire a post.

The post actually began with Randy's brilliant image of Fred taking a selfie. I saved the image as soon as I saw it and knew I wanted to use it at some point. Many kids like myself developed their first same sex crushes on the guys that were save to watch and read about. Fred, and the Scooby Gang were save, and Fred an obvious choice to crush over.

Image above by BoogieNightBoy

Blonde and handsome, and just a wee bit dim, what more could you ask for as a confused 11 year old. Although I guess we were supposed to root for Fred and Daphne as a couple, many of us thought it might be Shaggy who got shagged in the back of that van. The set up was sort of written for us, The girls and dogs off chasing down a clue to mystery. The boys in the Van, Shaggy and Fred getting more than a bit high, (you know Shaggy grew his own) and then getting more than a bit physical. The story is not original, a quick google search was enough to say many Scooby watchers had similar thoughts about two of the gang members.

The Necessity of Nepotism Nakedness

$

I am not usually a fan of nepotism in any field. In show business it has been responsible for inflicting many talent challenged individuals onto our movie and television screens. For every Mamie Gummer and Mariska Hargitay there has to be a Tori Spelling, Charlie Sheen and the Stepford spawns of Will and Jada. I will make an exception however for the son of Jeremy Irons, especially since he seems to be following in his fathers footsteps not just with talent, but with the willingness to yank off his pants when the role requires it.

I can't say I have yet to really see 28 year old Max Irons light burn up the screen, I dozed through most of his movie debut in Red Riding Hood, but I do look forward to watching more of him in the British series 'The White Queen'. In the little I have seen, Irons is not only compelling, but strikingly beautiful. Although his famous father tried to dissuade him from entering the life of a thespian, like most sons, he rebelled, doing exactly what he wanted anyway.

The Men of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Last year after seeing The Hunger Games, I did a post (found HERE:) saluting the men of the film. That post became one of the blog's most popular of 2012 generating quite a few hits. Although some of the Hunger Hunks (Wes Bentley & Alexander Ludwig) were killed off, Catching Fire still had a plethora of Man candy to warrant a follow-up!

Josh Hutcherson

I love Josh Hutcherson, I love his acting and his off screen personality including his support of the gay community. I still struggle however with his casting as Peeta Mellark. In some ways there is not much more Hutcherson could do with the role, he is often called upon to be weak and saved by Katniss. Although I have read the books, I preferred for Katniss and Gayle as a couple and therefore often found Peeta a bit annoying.

I loved Catching Fire, but it didn't hold many surprises for me. I suppose it is a good thing, but the movie seemed to follow the book so closely, that if like me you had read it, there wasn't really much new to get out of the film. I thought it took far too long to get the games going, but once they did, the movie moved quickly to it's climax.

Liam Hemsworth

My wanting Katniss with Gayle might have something to do with the fact that Liam is near the top of my list of favorite movie men. Gayle had a few more moments in Catching Fire than the first film, and if the movies continue to follow the books, an even bigger role in the next two films.

Sam Claflin
See my previous post on Sam HERE:

I was a little worried prior to seeing the film about Sam Claflin. Finnick was a great character as written in the books, but in some of the early promotional material Claflin seemed far too styled and made-up, almost mannequin like. Fortunately, this look was pretty much for his first scene (image below) only and once the games started going he was impossible to take your eyes off. Claflin has a quality on screen, beyond what his images portray...Sam Claflin is simply addictive.

Great to see Alan Ritchson on the big screen as District 1's Gloss. Alan looked incredible in his few brief scenes, bringing together all the strength and determination of the character.

Tony Gracci for N2N Bodywear by JR Williams

Signature shots can be risky. You have to be careful not overuse them and ensure they fit the model in front of your camera. I have seen photographers in the past put each and every model in a similar pose or theme even when it may not fit the body or personality in front of their camera.  Photographer JR Williams knows better than to make that mistake.

JR Williams shoots bodies, strong, fit and muscular bodies. The Honolulu photographer knows exactly what pose, what angle, what look is going to bring out the best, and showcase his subjects physique to the fullest. In this recent shoot with Tony Gracci for N2N Bodywear, JR perfectly incorporates his style of shooting to have the viewer want both the product, and the man wearing it.

One of the purposes of the clothing most of us wear, is indeed to cover. In the case of men's underwear however, another part of the appeal is to ensure that the covering has another purpose. Through color, it's cut and outline, underwear also must enhance, and give a hint of what lies beneath it. JR knows how to do this brilliantly. Using his skill at capturing the male form, including throwing in his signature shot, which in these images so beautifully captures Tony's eyes, his N2N's and every inch of his incredible body!

Most of you by now have probably been introduced to Beau and his puppy brother Theo. Since FH is devoted to exceptional photography, and because these images are so incredible I wanted to share for the few who have not seen them. I often throw the word 'natural' around when discussing photography, natural look, natural light, natural location. There is no way gave a baby and a baby both 'pretend'. Pretend to cuddle, pretend to sleep, prepared to love each other. These images, so lovingly celebrating the relationship between boy and dog (one of the world's most powerful relationships really) were taken by Beau's mom and she graciously has shared them with the world. They are all over the net, but you can see 20 or more HERE:

Homeland actor Damien Lewis recently said that when he was in his 20s, he became concerned that if he didn’t break out of the theatre in time, he worried that he...

'would be one of these slightly over-the-top, fruity actors who would have an illustrious career on stage, but wouldn't start getting any kind of film work until I was 50 and then start playing wizards.'

Well... The wizard of all wizards struck back! Kudos for Sir Ian McKellen for responding so wonderfully to this incredibly ignorant statement. Lewis is a good actor, and I loved him in season 1 of Homeland. Quickly though, after reading some of his interviews and seeing him on talk shows and award shows I began to think he came off as a bit of a douche. I was proved correct.
