Shower Show by Mike Tossy and StudioMGphotography

First two images from by Mike Tossy

'It's a challenging space. It is almost stage like, and not in a good way. The entrance to the shower acts as a proscenium arch making it difficult to break the divide between actor and photographer/audience.'

Last month, when featuring images from StudioMGphotography's newest book, Anton's Three Day Weekend, I talked about all of the incredible locations that Mark and Anton were able to shoot in over their whirlwind three day shoot. The last images in the book, were actually some of the last images shot. At the end of the shoot, Anton needed, and deserved a long hot shower, and being chronicler of the male form that he is, Mark captured the moment.

Below: James by StudioMGphotography

I commented at the time, that I really needed to do a post featuring the many men who stripped down, and lathered up in Mark and Mike Tossy's shower. After long shooting days, especially when working on the beach, models need to get all the salt and sand off their skin and out of all of their body crevices. I first became enamored with this particular shower last summer. Wes from NMS had travelled to California and had shot Bond at Mike and Mark's home. I featured Bond's shower in a piece last year (Dark Showers) and was intrigued by the space and the almost dark and Gothic look in the images. Mark and Mike were on board with featuring more of their shower, and men within, and dug into their archives to find shots of some of the model's rinsed off the salt, sand and sunscreen after a long day of shooting.

'James is the tall surfer (briefly joined by the woman who would shortly thereafter become his girlfriend). He was my muse for about a year, a decade ago. He was a talented young photographer himself so we always had great adventures out shooting with him searching out locations for us. If he still lived in the area today, I'm sure he'd be the first guy to volunteer if I suggested any wild shoot, like sparks, or flour, I'm sure. He's the subject of one of my first books.'

'We have a large 2 person shower, with floor and walls of natural slate, inset with panels of glass block to let additional light in. The space has an inviting warmth to it, but the reality is the angles can be challenging for photography if I want to keep the camera dry. Everyone loves that shower though, so on several occasions I've seen what I might create there. There is something intriguing about the idea of capturing a typically-private moment...'

Below: Lance By Mike Tossy

Some of you might remember seeing the skin drenched body of Lance before. I first featured Mike and Mark's images of Lance in a story back in 2012. (First and Second). A friend from Santa Cruz, Lance was friends with models Tyler and JPhoenix and was just 20 when he stepped in the shower, doing his first professional shoot with Mark and Mike.

'As you an see, I'm a bit less concerned about getting the camera wet, I use the underwater camera that I use in the pool =)'

Below: Paul by StudioMGphotography

I have also featured the long blonde haired Paul previously on FH. It was that blonde hair that had me reaching out to include Paul in my tribute to Into The Woods in 2015. (The Hair as Yellow as Corn) I did a second feature (HERE:) featuring his work with both Mike and Mark and in both you can see Mike's underwater camera in action shooting Paul under the surface in the pool. The shower was a must to ensure all of the chlorine was washed off Paul's silky smooth skin.

That brings us to Anton, taken on the last day of his 3 day weekend in California. If you check out my last two pieces on Anton, (HERE:& HERE:) or previewed Mark's book, (HERE:) you know Anton has a sexy hairy chest, and beautifully furry body and butt. Mark had asked Anton not to shave prior to the shoot, but as part of his clean-up and shower, most of that beautiful fur went down the shower drain and Anton was anxious to shave if it off as soon as the shoot was over.

Jake Ashford: Nap Time

'Come take a nap with me!'

We all have that point in our lives when napping moves from being a punishment to being a welcomed luxury. Given how hard Jake Ashford works, and how much energy and enthusiasm he exudes, it makes sense he would need the odd siesta, to gear up to step in front of the camera.

Many on Instagram fill their pages with 'themed images' Some post a variety of bathroom selfies, others focus on a specific part of their body. Although Jake's focus is often on his beautiful backside, I love that he frequently chronicles his afternoon naps.

Sometimes, getting into bed at night can be stressful. In addition to trying to get some sleep, it can also be a chore to wipe away the last 12 hours, while at the same time, gearing up for the 12 that wait for you in the morning. A nap, especially one in the middle of the afternoon has a different purpose. It's purpose is not quite as daunting, it is a break, a moment to re-center and relax. It can also be an erotic experience, especially, if you have some company, as Jake does in the image below.

Richard:
What are you LOOKING at?

Emmeline:
Your muscles.

Richard:
What about them? You're really acting silly lately, Em. Always saying DUMB things like that. Always LOOKING at me funny! You're not coming down with something, are you? Don't give it to me.

I am convinced, that every decade, there is a celebrity who acts as the nexus between many gay boys and young men and their sexuality. During the eighties, when I first became a teenager, that celebrity was Christopher Atkins. When I wrote about The Blue Lagoon's anniversary a few years ago, a piece I was proud garnered a 'great blog' message from director Randal Kleiser. (Happy Anniversary) I wrote about how Atkins brought me out of the closet, even though I didn't know it at the time. I was too young to see the film when it first hit the theatres, my introduction to Atkins came a few years later, in the form an image, the People Magazine cover above.

I remember first seeing the issue in a pile of old magazines in my neighbours basement that I was getting paid to help clean. I was hypnotised by the image, and kept looking for moments to take a peak. I so wanted to steal it, but was nervous, and an opportunity never arose. I remember making up an excuse to go down into the basement a few weeks later, plan set to find the issue, but that pile of magazines was gone, most likely thrown out in the clean up. Months later however, I was pleasantly surprised to find a copy at the bottom of a pile of magazine in my dentist's waiting room.

I was getting braces at the time, and knew that waiting room inside and out. I stuck the magazine between two chairs to hide while I went in for my fittings. All through the appointment, I kept worrying the magazine would not be there when I was done. I was scared and nervous, but managed to complete my plan, and quickly grabbed it as I headed out the door. It wasn't just any magazine, it was a magazine with a cover that revealed a secret I wasn't yet fully aware I was hiding.

I eventually saw The Blue Lagoon on VHS, with countless rewinds and pauses. I even got to see it the theatre (two nights in a row) in a nostalgia weekend when it played in a double feature with Grease, also directed by Randal Kleiser. Kleiser directed some of the most popular films of the 70's and 80's including, Summer Lovers, Big Top Pee Wee, White Fang and Flight of the Navigator. Kleiser's films may not have won him awards, but the writer and director was responsible for a collection of movies that had an impact on almost everyone growing up in the 80's. He is also responsible for introducing us to Christopher Atkins.

Kleiser & Shields

Instead of posting a slew of naked Atkins shots, (there are many on FH) I went on a search for some behind the scene images of the filming on Turtle Island in Fiji. I was looking for info about how Atkins's was cast, and info about the production and the nudity. It is both fascinating and more than a little erotic, to think of a hot 18 year old, cast in his first film, quickly whisked off to Fiji to spend months on a beautiful island. Of course much of this time he was expected to be naked, surrounded by crew members and his openly gay director. Atkins didn't seen to bat an eye.

His nude scenes, almost tame at the time, are most likely too explicit for today's movie going audiences. Although Atkins was 18, his co-star Brooke Shields was just 14, which I am sure would cause more of an outrage today. Although boyish, Aikins seemed both innocent and  at the same time wise beyond his year.. He seemed to have full knowledge of the impact he was having on both the women and men who adored him. He welcomed it, which only added to his appeal.

Casting Richard:

'Christopher Atkins was a high school senior with no acting experience when he landed the role as the shipwrecked teenage heartthrob Richard in The Blue Lagoon.' The 1980's classic turned him into an overnight star. 'I didn’t know anything about movies, and I was just one of these kids in this huge, huge long line,' Atkins says about his 'Blue Lagoon' audition. After landing the part opposite a young Brooke Shields, he says the cast was swept off to film in Fiji.'

'That was not like making a movie that was like a life experience. There's never been anything else like that in my life. I was teaching sailing in Rye, New York. One of the mothers took pictures of me and sent them in to Ford Models. Before I knew it, I was modeling with Ford. At Ford, they heard about the open call for Blue Lagoon, and I was one of 4000 people to audition for that movie. For whatever reason, they kept calling me back. Then I didn't hear from them for three months and I ended up getting a Gloria Vanderbilt jean commercial.

I never in a million years expected that my life was going to go down that road–I wanted to play pro baseball. Finally, I got a call from Columbia Pictures, and they said, can you come in and bring a blond curly wig? I thought, 'Where am I going to find a blond curly wig?' My mom happened to have something. The next day they called me in and said I had the part. Two days later, I was flown to L.A. and met with hair and makeup people, and they were testing tanning lotions on us and curling my hair. And few days later, I was on a plane to Fiji. Then I was on a deserted island for four and a half months–with Brooke Shields. I'm known for chasing Brooke down the beach in a diaper'

Co-Stars:

'Atkins says they spent the first two weeks living on a boat and getting into character. 'I was 18 and Brooke Shields was 14, and the director wanted us to be attracted to each other, Randal stuck a picture of her over my bunk on the boat when I was first there so I could start becoming attracted to her. He said it will come out in your eyes, it will come out in real time on film. Brooke and I had a little bit of a romantic, innocent sort of romance in the very beginning of the film.'

'Because the chemistry between the two leads was vital to the success of The Blue Lagoon, Kleiser (who also directed Grease) came up with the idea to get star Christopher Atkins feeling a little lovestruck with Shields by putting a picture of the young starlet over Atkins’ bed. Staring at Shields every night apparently did rouse some feelings in Atkins; the duo had a brief romance while filming. heir affection didn’t last for long. Despite their early attachment, Shields and Atkins soon began bickering nonstop. “Brooke got tired of me,” Atkins told People in 1980. “She thought I took acting too seriously. I was always trying to get into a mood while she would be skipping off to joke with the crew.” Still, Kleiser even capitalized on that, using the tension to fuel the more frustrated scenes, lensing the tough stuff while his leads were tussling.'

'Teri Shields was also anxious for the two to hit it off. For the first few nights of filming she suggested that Chris move from his beachfront tent to the extra cot in the Shields bungalow. 'I invited him to stay,; explains Teri, ;because I thought they should get to know each other.' Recalls Chris, 'I kissed them each goodnight before I got into my own bed.' During the first week, Teri says, 'they were in love—all goo-goo. I think they brainwashed themselves.'

'We were so built up for one another',observes Brooke, 'by the time we met I was too embarrassed to say, ‘So you’re the one I’ve heard so much about—stand there, I want to stare at you.’ Chris was equally intimidated. 'She was one of the most beautiful girls I’d ever seen,' he raves. Kleiser broke the ice by taking them around the island. 'Brooke would turn around and ask me questions,; Chris remembers, 'and suddenly we were talking like friends.'

The Nude Scenes:

'The setting in the movie with two young people running around naked. It just hit everybody's fantasy in a big way. It is literally a timeless story.'

'It was Kleiser’s original concept to have the two grown characters play the entire film in the nude, which scared off many actresses including Jennifer Jason Leigh, who was the first choice for the female lead. Kelly Preston, Linda Blair, Jodie Foster, Tatum O’Neal, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daryl Hannah and Rosanna Arquette also auditioned for the role of Emmeline with reservations to go nude. Finally, the desperate director agreed to let actress, Brooke Shields act in the film predominantly clothed, with a body double employed for the nude scenes. Shields was 14 years old at the time of filming and later testified before a US Congressional inquiry that older body doubles were used in some of her nude scenes. Also throughout the film, her chest was always covered in frontal shots by her long hair or in other ways.'

'For the male lead actor, once Matt Dillon turned down the role of Richard, the casting director returned to the thousands of audition tapes made over the course of a year, and decided that 18-year-old Christopher Atkins would be alright if he permed his hair to look more savage. Actors Sean Penn, Christopher Reeve, John Belushi and John Travolta were among those considered for this role.'

'The Nudity didn't bother me,' Christopher said. 'You only go around once in this life so you do it all. There's nothing really wrong or immoral about the nudity. 'There's a difference between nudity and sex. The human body, unfortunately, makes some people self-conscious. It was no big deal for me to adjust to my nude scenes in 'Blue Lagoon' or running around in a loin cloth.'

'Obviously they broke it to me ahead of time that I was going to be naked... a lot. Randal was really nervous about that. But I understood. I knew it wasn’t gratuitous nudity, it wasn’t gratuitous sex. It was a major aspect to the film. He was capturing the nature of the story, two kids on this island, they obviously wouldn’t be wearing any clothes. I’m from Rye, NY not from where the hippies are, but you know, I was fine with it. The whole experience ended up being so much fun.'

'I was waking up every single day in a tent. I was with Brooke, the director, the DP. All the crew lived in a tent city. Every day, I was waking up in a tent walking down the beach without any clothes on, washing up in the salt water and heading over to breakfast. We weren't in a hotel — we were living the movie. Coming home was tough, though.'

I'm a fortunate person in that I have a tremendous gay fan base — and straight fan base. You put them together and that's a big deal. Somebody asked me once, do you know why? And I said, 'No.' They told me, 'When your movie came out, back in the early 80s, it was a huge coming out time for the gay movement. People were starting to come out and be proud.' Blue Lagoon came out with male nudity, and you became the poster child to gay movement. I thought it was fascinating and unexpected. It was the right time in history for that to have happened.'

'Randal Kleiser: [Laughs] All kinds of people come up to me and say, 'I found out I was gay when I saw The Blue Lagoon.' It’s because you had a choice, either person A or person B. Chris [Atkins] was great about the nudity. He was like, 'Sure, I’ll jump in and swim naked.; There weren’t many studio films that featured frontal nudity in those days or even many afterwards.

One of the fun moments was when we filmed the scene when Chris was masturbating on the rock and Brooke comes up behind him and says “What are you doing?” He screams “Go away!” After we finished filming that Brooke came up to me and asked “What was he doing on the rock?” [Laughs] I said “Go ask your mother. She was 14 and had no idea what he was up to on that rock. That was a wonderful shoot. We were on an island in Fiji that had no roads or electricity and we built a tent city so the crew all lived in tents. We built a drive-in type screening with blankets in front of it where we would watch our dailies. We had a great time living on that island. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.'

Barn Burner: Luke by Lights on Studio

'Luke has lots of confidence and is very easy going and eager to please. Of course he also has that winning smile.'

As a kid, I always loved visiting barns, something I still get excited about today. As an animal lover, I love the sites and feel of a barn, and even the smells. Living in the country, I still get to visit a few barns on a regular basis, and through working on FH, I have gotten to virtually visit, many barns, as they have proven a popular location for several photographers that I have been fortunate to feature.

Last Autumn, I featured Tom Nakielski's trip to the barn shooting model Hansel Wellington. (Back to Basics) This year, we get to tag along during his shoot with Ohio model Luke Roberts. My theme for FH this year has been 'firsts', and I did many first themed pieces early in the year. It's been a little while since I returned to the theme, so am happy to be able to featured Luke's first time wearing only his brilliant smile. FH viewers actually got a sneak peak of Tom's work with Luke earlier this summer, when I featured a few images of Luke celebrating the 4th of July. (Sparkler) Those studio shots were from the second part of his day with Tom, a day that began here, in the barn.

'Working with Tom was a great pleasure. He has great ideas, and the best part.... He doesn't take the shot until everything is perfect. Tom's shots are all "picture perfect". A true talent, A true professional.'

'This was the first time I photographed Luke and it started out fully clothed. (him not me lol) He had not done nudes before and I wanted him to be comfortable with me before asking him to do nudes. The barn (actually a carriage house that had 4 horses and 2 carriages in it heyday, was built by a banker/realtor in 1892. We used many different areas in the carriage house for the session. After some warm up shots,  I asked Luke for some butt shots. To begin, I asked him just to lower his jeans. He was not hesitant doing that so I knew he was ready to begin shooting nudes.'

With his stunning blue eyes, great lips, and chiseled jaw and face, Luke looks amazing in and out of his plaid shirt and jeans. Luke's smile engages the viewer right away, and then keeps you there with his sultry glare. I don't know if Luke spends much time on farms, but his strong, built body looks like it's spent many hours carrying bails of hay and working up a sweat completing all of chores around the barn.

'I wish I would have shot more nudes but I wanted to make sure we had enough time to do photos in the Queen Anne Victorian house and to be sure there was enough light for the session. Although I did bring my studio lights, I wanted to get a lot of natural light images. Luke has been photographed by many other photographer and as a result he was familiar with the process of photo sessions.'

Barefaced: JayCee by TCorrigan

'I know the conventional wisdom in modeling seems to lean towards serious facial expressions, but I think some of the best images happen when a model is relaxed and having fun. That mood yields some very appealing smiles.'

We often assume, that we're are at our most bare when completely naked. My experience has been, that clothing isn't the only way to shield. I have seen many shots of models, even featured a few, that even when naked, are not really exposed. Some hide behind props, some merge into background or poses. Many use their faces to remain hidden, giving nothing away with their eyes or expressions. Although their face may be visible, it remains a mask, covering not what, but who we are looking at within the image.

One of the hardest things to capture, is a natural smile. When feeling uncomfortable or insecure, on the first things people do is suppress and minimize our facial expressions. More than the size or shape of any particular body part, nothing exposes more about us than our eyes, nose and mouth. The ability to express a smile naturally, especially when on camera, is a sign of confidence, being comfortable, and a healthy sense of self.

Model JayCee has a great body, tall, lean and fit. It's was his sexy and engaging face and smile however that first grabbed my attention. JayCee's eyelashes, lips, dimples, jawline an smile were the first things I noticed, and the features I most wanted to see more. As you can see from this collection of images, California photographer TCorrigan felt exactly same way, and Tom captured an impressive array of images including many shots which focus on JayCee's face and killer smile.

For Tom, photography has always been one of his artistic outlets, but up until a couple of years ago, his primary focus was on landscapes. Tom's love of the human form, especially of the male variety, made switch his a focus a natural progression of his work. Although a great landscape can be visually breathtaking, they can be limiting creatively. Tom finds working with live, dynamic human subjects allows him more opportunities to use wardrobe, lighting and location to create different moods and emotions, and the opportunity to reveal more about his subject in front of lens.

'When I book a model, I like to do some studio shots and at least one or two location shoots as well. I like to capture a large number of varied shots, so that I can see the model from different perspectives. I enjoy using wardrobe to help develop a feel for a shot, but nudes are even more interesting to me. A successful nude shot can be difficult. It takes a certain skill to help a model look relaxed or sensual in a nude shot. I enjoy that challenge and I always look for ways to improve my next shoot.'
TCorrigan

Tom discovered JayCee's images on Model Mayhem, and in addition to noticing his great face, was impressed with many of his interesting poses. Tom's practice is to always talk with models before a shoot, this helps him get a feel for their personalities, and for them to get to know his. It is also a great time to finalize wardrobe, locations discuss what each of their goals are for the shoot.

'JayCee was enthusiastic about the shoot and I knew at that point that we would make some great images. We worked so well together that we scheduled a second shoot a few weeks later. We captured a completely different feel in the second shoot, which yielded several great images.'

In his work with JayCee, it is clear to me that Tom more than accomplished his goals. From both his location shoot, and second studio shoot, Tom captured a full spectrum of looks from fashion to fitness to striking portraits and full nudes. In almost every image, JayCee's face, especially his beautiful eyes, act as sort of an emotional barometer, elevating the enjoyment experienced with each of Tom's shots.

Favorite Face of the Day Tom Bateman

Amy Schumer's film Trainwreck, was one of my favorite comedies of 2015. I loved her unique way of story telling and laughed out loud all the way through, especially when Lebron James and Bill Hader were on screen together. I had read the bad reviews for Snatched, but thought with Amy there might still be lots to laugh about. There wasn't. I don't think I actually laughed until the movie was almost over, and they were all near the end, at the brilliant facial expressions of actress Joan Cusack.

Despite favorites like Amy, Goldie Hawn, Wanda Sykes and Ike Barinholtz, the best part of the flick was being introduced to the incredibly hot face of actor Tom Bateman. Tom wasn't in the film for long, but enough to have me googling more about the London born actor. A London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts graduate, Bateman was awarded the Leverhulme Scholarship and even before graduation was hitting the London stages alongside Catherine Tate and David Tennant in 'Much Ado About Nothing.'

After several roles on stage, and a few small roles on television, Bateman scored regular roles on The Tunnel, Da Vinci's Demons and one of the leads in Jekyll & Hyde. Bateman will be seen next on the big screen along side Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer in the remake of Murder on the Orient Express.

I was saddened yesterday to read on Facebook of the passing of Chicago photographer Scott Barnes. Scott led a creative life and generously shared so much of his work with FH. Between 2009 and 2013 I featured Scott's work close a dozen times and loved so many of his images, especially Scott's 'drifter series'.

Many of you may also recognize or have seen the shot above.. Scott describes the image of the hottie in the doorway as not necessarily his favorite shot, but the image he saw copied and tumbled around on the net more than any other image he had shot. At just 50, Scott had a lot of creating still to do. Rest in colorful peace!

In The Raw: Aaron by BAD JOHNPAUL

In The Raw: In its true state; not made to seem better or more palatable than it actually is, naked.

When it comes to raw, especially when it pertains to exposed skin, the reaction of exposure is usually red, and always painful. When nerves are exposed, there is no longer any protection from the elements, nothing to buffer or soften your reaction to emotion. We spend our lives buffering our emotions, and when it comes to pain, it can serve us well. But we also end up buffering our body and soul to all emotions. We mute not just negative feelings, but also joy, elation and sexual euphoria.

When I first discovered the work of BAD JOHNPAUL, I could feel his images went beyond the skin, to the raw nerve endings of the erotic nightmares so many of us crave, but suppress. When I first featured JOHNPAUL's work in July, (Ruined) I focused on the push and pull of the damage that both ruins our lives, as at the same time, it defines it. There are trauma's we all experience that both haunt and fuel us simultaneously.

When choosing which of the many bad boys to feature, I spent quite a bit of time on JOHNPAUL's tumblr, The Bad Boys of BJP. There are literally hundreds of depictions of the of the men and women JOHNPAUL has so beautifully and rawly exposed. There were many shoots that I wanted to feature, but my organic, and carnal draw towards gingers had be hone in firmly and forcefully on Aaron.

Gingers appeal to me for so many reasons, their coloring of course, especially their skin and freckles. They also stand out because they're visually unique and we so often overlook and downplay the power of the far too rare unique experiences that we encounter. As hot as these images of Aaron are, and as hot as the images JOHNPAUL presents on his tumblr, they are just the surface of what lies beneath.

Instead of starting a pay site featuring models not everyone is interested in, JOHNPAUL offers uncensored sets to those in having raw responses to specific models or themes. The level of erotica is in keeping with his models wishes, and any $ money earned is also shared the model. JOHNPAUL tells me there's much more to Aaron's shower than the teaser pic below.... I'll let you know!

'For me, the most beautiful curves on a man are from the base of neck, down the back and around a butt. The right pose by a model, captured by the right photographer, is what often draws me to images of the male form.'

This piece marks the third, and end piece, featuring some of photographer Michal Boothe's (msbimages) most spectacular shots of the male behind. Some of the models featured here, you may recognize from previous posts, and from their amazing assets. Some of the bottoms featured, are making their FH debut.

If you're a regular reader of FH you know how much I love the male behind, especially within photography of the male form. I wrote about why in the first two parts of the series, but Michal's images are the perfect visuals as to why the male back, and backside, create the most visually beautiful lines and curves. If you missed the previous posts, check out the links below.

Let's hope Van Varenberg gets his crap together and makes the most of the blessings he's been given. Definitely a contender for joining the most wanted list...
