Iron Sharpens Iron: Blake Owens by Justin O'Keith

'I could see beauty in so many things. I would analyze various angles and positions naturally to create beautiful composition.'

The first time I saw Justin O'Keith's, those many angles and positions had me excited to be able to feature his work. The first images that I saw were visually edgy, incredibly sexy and uniquely creative. There is an energy in Justin's work that is bold and fresh and perfectly represents the 'unapologetically provocative' theme, which has become the motto for his company, Justin O'Keith Creative.

We were not able to use the model in those first images of Justin's that I saw, but that ended up a fortunate misfortune. When Justin sent on his work with bodybuilder Blake Owens, I knew we had the perfect example to showcase Justin's creative vision. I don't tend to feature many bodybuilder, and not because I don't appreciate their look and the lines and curves on a muscled physique. I appreciate and respect the dedication and commitment to their bodies and profession, I just don't always feel photographers know how to shoot the artistically. The focus tends to be directed on muscle only, often missing the creative blending of physical strength with the unique qualities and personality of the model being captured.

As is immediately evident, this was not the case in Justin's work with Blake. It was important to both photographer and model that viewers see more than just a physically strong and sexy beast, but also the beauty and vulnerabilities of the man beyond those muscles. Through his images, Justin looks to provoke and amaze, and for Blake, the goal is encourage and inspire. Blake encourages everyone to be open and honest with their goals, and he strives to practice what he preaches. For Blake, this transparency magnetizes others toward you who respect those qualities. It also allows others to see the 3-dimensional person, and you became who are. Once known only singularly as the 'big guy with the mean face who lifts', through sharing his story, Blake has seen doors open, and relationships formed that otherwise would not have been possible.

During his senior year of high school, Blake was forced to sit the football season after injuring his shoulder, and having a subsequent surgery during his junior year. Blake had been an All-State player and his goal was to obtain an appointment at the United States Military Academy at West point. In order to ensure he didn't get medically disqualified, he couldn't risk playing the game that he loved and had played all of his life, during his pinnacle year of Texas HS football. It was during this time, still needing something physical to focus on, that bodybuilding entered Blake's life.

'I went to train at a new gym after school everyday just to get my mind off the season that fall of my senior year .It gave me something to compete against. Growing up, as kind of a thicker skinned country boy, it also gave me the opportunity to look better than I had ever looked. I feel I needed at the time as without football, I was feeling incredibly unaccomplished. Even after I received my appointment to the Academy, I was deeply in love with the sport and couldn't imagine not being able to eat all my meals and train daily and continue to grow and develop. Just 20 weeks in, I was seeing myself change.'

Blake went on to attend West Point and played football for a over a year as a deep snapper and fullback. In addition, Blake collegiality participated in the USAPL Nationals for Army's Power Lifting team the following spring. On the surface, everything seemed to be coming together for Blake, especially sports wise. When not on the field, or in the gym, things were not as easy, academic stress and struggles were starting to build.

'To this day, I haven't said much about it, but this is a new me and I am a man who bears transparency to establish trust with others. I ended up leaving West Point after plagiarizing a paper and getting an Honor Board pending against me that, in the wake of all the circumstances of my academic struggles at the academy, was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back. Fearful of what my punishment would be and if I would even be able to handle the stresses of it, I left. I signed my resignation papers, received an honorable discharge, and arguably left behind one of the biggest opportunities at that point in my life.'

Gutted, Blake returned home to Texas and began working at a sports nutrition store. Although he continued to compete in body building competitions, was plagued with injuries and stomach issues due to his dieting and a high liver enzyme count. It is during these bad life circumstance, that we all find ourselves in from time to time, that Blake believes often tests our dedication to our passions. Although Blake recounts having picked himself up many times in the past, never before with the tangible and practical goals he was now seeing before him. For the first time he was seeing the future, and the financial opportunities before him, that he had never been able to see clearly before.

'I think at times living amongst very conservative North Texans can take a toll on your confidence if you let it because every old guy has his opinion over why you're whatever bigoted term they decide to label you as. I changed my attitude and relentlessly pursued achievement in the scope of my passion. As Marcus Aurelius states in his memoirs "he who lives in harmony with himself, lives in harmony with the universe." I truly believe ANYONE can be ANYTHING they want if they put their mind to it, and that is the message I want to spread, practice, and preach. My goal is to say "hey, just because I'm that big guy with the serious look doesn't mean I can't crack a joke, make you feel good about yourself, be compassionate, etc." I love the fact that as a trainer, likewise as a competitor, I get to invest my time in others just like I invest in myself and therefore epitomize the idea of "do as I say BECAUSE OF what I do".'

Blake truly believes in the principles of iron sharpening iron. The phrase, 'As iron sharpens iron', comes from Proverbs 27:17 and illustrates the mutual benefit in bringing two iron blades together and how strength and talent can sharpen one another. This is certainly the case in combining Blake's strength and passion with the talent and creativity of artist Justin O'Keith. Blake's sponsor, Optimum Fitness, first brought the two iron men together and Blake says they quickly became a great team.

'I jumped on the opportunity with an open mind and just let Justin be his professional self and do what he thought worked best theme wise and pose wise. He honestly made it really easy for me to just be me and flex (haha!). Justin goes through thrift stores and finds the coolest things that we can create a theme for a shoot with; as intricate as homemade masks/thongs/straps/etc or as simple as eye black making ALL THE DIFFERENCE in our football shoot. Justin is THE most creative professional I have ever worked with and now that he is my manager as well we have great rapport and the content is only getting, how should I say, edgier? In the best of ways.'

Justin's passion for photography began while in high school. He always enjoyed taking pictures and served as yearbook editor in both high school and in college. It was during his first semester of law school, that Justin began to feel that something was missing. He needed a creative outlet, and a trip to Best Buy resulted in the purchase of his first professional camera. 'I just went crazy and took it to Europe also during my study abroad and captured some epic shots.' Justin's images have the feel of an artist who has been practicing his craft for decades, but his decision to pursue capturing the male form only began last summer.

'I was a natural light photographer for 10 years so I wanted to try the studio setting. I fell in love with it. You are always told to do what you know. There are so many male photographers who shoot women only. When they do shoot men it is generic and flat. I like to bring life to my male models. They are overlooked and not given the same detail as female models. Also I have an easy time connecting with them so they can let their personalities come out. I am a former high school and college athlete. I also use to be an Olympic lifter and am slowly getting back into that. When you have someone shooting you who knows what it is like to train and can share similar experiences you can bring out so much in them. Also for me it is so much easier working with male models. I lay out the terms and we get to working.'

The provocative edge stems from Justin's best friend. Her initial response to his work was that it was good... but could be better. Initially bothered as he struggled to how to improve, Justin went work trying new and edgier themes and look. It worked, people began talking about his work, and the 'provocative' was the word usually used.

'At first I was offended, then I embraced it. Uapologetically Provocative became the motto for my company. I do not care what people think of my work. Art is supposed to make you think and cause a reaction. If not then it has not done its job. I want to shock and amaze people. Make them seem the world from a different point of view than they are used to. Make them question things and this image they are viewing. My art always me to fully be in control. It allows me to create without limits. It allows me to be myself and to be free. I put so much of my heart, soul and spirit into my work. I think you can feel the emotion when you see my images.'

'I was referred to Blake by his bodybuilding sponsor and coach. I have a partnership with him to shoot his clients for modeling portfolios and also fitness shots for them. Blake had modeled in the past and was ready to make it happen. I send all of my clients a questionnaire that outlines what options they have for the shoot. Basically they set the terms for their shoot and I accommodate it. That way they are comfortable and we know what we are doing. Blake was not really into anything edgy. He wanted to stay vanilla and I respected that. Once he got to know me and we started to chat he opened up a bit. He thinks of this as a business and he is able to separate the personal from the professional. This makes it easy for him to execute shoots. The mask he found to be too much at first then he was like I can do that. So we killed that look. The guy that has gone from 0 to 100 within a week lol. We have worked together about 4 or 5 times now each time coming up with more racy and fun ideas. He is young and a go-getter. whatever he wants to do he makes happen.'

Just Because: Alias Grace

For me, the highlight of last Sunday's EMMY Awards was seeing author Margaret Atwood walk up the stage. Margaret deserved the well earned applause she received. Atwood is one of my favorite authors, even if Cat's Eye was forced upon me by my grade 11 English teacher. It was great to see the writer of Handmaid's Tale get the recognition she deserves.

Another of Atwood's novels, 1985's Alias Grace premieres on both CBC and Netflix on Monday. I have not read Alias Grace, but the story of the notorious 1843 murders of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery in Upper Canada looks promising. It doesn't hurt one of the stars is actor Edward Holcroft, an actor I first noticed in the mini-series London Spy, and his role in Kingsman, The Secret Service.

The Man in the Ocean: Josh by Richard Rothstein

'Men and women walked, jogged and rode their bikes along the Boardwalk paying little attention to Josh’s public and very relaxed display of his magnificent birthday suit. That is Coney Island!'

Earlier this month, I featured Richard Rothstein's images of Josh on their early morning trip to Coney Island. (Forever Present) The visual carnival of lights, color and a hot naked model weaved together Richard's magnificent shots captured more than Josh and more than the famous New York theme park. Richard also conjured up universal childhood themes that are so intertwined for many of us, with circus, fair rides and carnivals.

Most of you already know, that I hate to pass up featuring great shots and Richard sent on so many beautiful images from the day, I wanted to feature this series on their own. To begin with, this series features the captivating Josh in a different setting, a short distance from bright lights and noises from the park. It also features the unplanned appearance from a second model, the man in the ocean.

'At one point Josh lounged on the breaker rocks as the rising sun caressed his naked body, just a few feet away from an Hassidic Jew performing a ritual bath in the surf.'

I found the early morning bather such a uniquely Coney Island addition, and an almost mysterious layer of story, I had to feature several images from his swim. He doesn't seem to notice Josh, or the photographer capturing both he and Josh's bodies on the beach.  As his descends into the ocean, and swims further and further out into the water, I wonder if he was just dying to turn around, or completely oblivious to the beautiful naked man on the rocks behind him.

Mark-Eugene Garcia: State of the Art

Since first discovering his work last year, I have featured Mark-Eugene Garcia in a series of posts highlighting his work as a writer, an actor and of course, as a model. Images of great looking men, especially when they're naked often stimulate various reactions the viewer. Some the reaction is to inspire.

Since starting FH, I have always been interested in nude modeling beyond just photos, but also modeling for art classes, sculptures and illustrations. It has also been fascinating to learn how some images, not originally taken for an art piece, sometimes lead to one. I have featured many artists over the years who find the inspiration for their art from the male form, and more specifically, image of the male form.

Illustration below by Kimmo Matias

Although Mark has always wanted to pose naked for an artist, these drawings were inspired from images. Mark has been re-created by several artists including Kimmo Matias, Night Scratch and Marco Giles. Mark has also inspired another artist, a more enigmatic one, who is choosing to remain anonymous. The mystery artist is a friend of Mark's who has always been intrigued with drawing erotic nudes.

The mysterious artist confessed their goal one night over wine, but thus far hasn't told anyone. Most of their friends think of the artist as conservative, even a bit prudish, so their erotic drawings of their naked friend, not to mention his erection, might be a bit more than some can handle.

As you have learned by now, Mark has no problem going full frontal, and since his first appearance on FH, has become even more comfortable with showing it all, and showing it up. In fact, Mark recently finished shooting a part in an upcoming film, Strapped For Danger, and yes, he goes so full frontal, so keep your eyes out for it's release! Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke

$

TCM recently aired another viewing of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. The classic movie is played several times a year, and it usually has me pressing record on my DVR. I saw the Tennessee Williams classic for the first time only a few years ago and it inspired a tribute to the many actors who have played the role of Brick. (A Ton of Bricks)

I only watched a few minutes of my recent recording, but enough to remind me how talented, and incredibly hot Paul Newman was. I was thinking how sad it was we never got a Newman nude scene when a quick google proved me wrong. Many of you many have known of Newman's brief nude scene from 1967's Cool Hand Luke, but I had not. Not usually a lover of westerns, I was never really drawn to the film, but after reading Newman was briefly nude, I had to find a copy.

First off, if you haven't seen the movie, the scene is quick and set a night, so darkly lit. But... you do get a brief view of Newman's butt, well, one cheek is a little better lit than the other. I was however far from disappointed as given I didn't think there was any Newman nudity, it was a pleasant surprise. The entire movie was a pleasant surprise and I ended up enjoying it very much. Newman was great, and very heartbreaking as Luke, whose spirit is slowly ripped away as the story progressed.

The film is also a testosterone and sweaty and shirtless filmed 2 hours with appearances by a slew of young actors like George Kennedy, Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton. I had never thought of these actors as 'hunks', but they all looked good shirtless. Pa Walton, actor Ralph Waite also had a brief butt scene which I capped below. I believe there were only two named female characters, and both on screen only briefly. Rumor has it, director Stuart Rosenberg wanted to encourage the male bonding, and prison type feel by banning wives and girlfriends from the set.

Career Friendly: Joe by Carl Proctor

'I’m excessively hairy, and I’m so happy to know that hair is evidently “in” right now, because if it wasn’t I would be spending a lot of time and effort shaving the Norwegian sweater all over my body. I have also worked very hard over the years to develop a defined chest, so I think that with the combination of my hair has become my trademark.'

Hairy is definitely in, especially when it graces a gorgeous chest and body like Joe's. Carl Proctor is one of my favorite photographers, and as 2017 flies by, I could't believe Carl's last appearance on FH was during last years Ten celebration. Well, time to rectify that, beginning with Joe. Joe first connected with Carl the way many models and photographers do, with friend request on Model Mayhem with the comment 'Hey, I like your work.'

They began talking about possibly working together, and as he usually does, Carl was curious about what Joe was looking for in his shoot. Joe wanted his images to be fun and sexy, but also, given his career, also work career friendly. They got together just a few days later and shot for close to six hours capturing the looks and themes Joe had been hoping form.

Although the resulting images are certainly career friendly, (unless maybe you're a member of the clergy or kindergarten teacher...) the resulting images from Carl are still sizzling hot. Joe exudes a seductive vibe in his poses and his sultry gaze that give his shots a sexy edge, teetering perfectly on the line that he had set. Carl describes Joe as very enthusiastic about the shoot and the opportunity to expand and update his portfolio and looks forward to working with Joe again. Joe graciously took the time to fill me in on his work with Carl, why he enjoy's modeling, and his experiences so far.

Getting Started:

'The first time I ever modeled I was contacted by a local photographer was on Myspace. He wanted to take a few photos for his portfolio and it’s hard to turn down an opportunity to showcase your blue steel side (Zoolander reference), so I agreed. After he added the photos from our shoot into his online portfolio I kept landing freelance jobs all over Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. The epiphany that made me believe I should consistently pursue modeling came to me when I decided to participate in a model open-call convention called ProScout. I heard an ad on the radio for it on the way to school one day and begged my mom to do it with me. After a weekend’s worth of auditioning I ended up getting three callbacks from reputable agencies in New York and Los Angeles. I ended up not signing with any of them because my mom convinced me to finish school first, but mentally I always placed it to the side to pursue later.'

Skin in the Game?

'The climate of our society is sadly one that still stigmatizes nude photos, and regards being the subject of a nude photoshoot as something unbecoming or indecent. I caution myself to think about those things before every photoshoot. Even though I personally do not have a moral dilemma against tastefully posing nude, the reality is that those types of shots can come back to haunt you. The internet is a quick way for your naked body to become ubiquitous or go viral, and if that happens prospective employers may decide not to hire you simply because they don’t want a risqué model representing their company. It’s a tight rope to walk sometimes, but my general rule of thumb is, “Would my mom be okay with this?” If my answer is no, I don’t do it (lol).'

Why Modeling?

'I really enjoy envisioning concepts and making them come to life in attention-grabbing or thought-provoking images. Art through photography can speak a thousand words and inspires many. I love knowing when I’m a part of that.

I think most models like it because it’s a way for you to enjoy yourself by showing off. Showing the world that you’re confident in yourself through an artistic medium is a very empowering thing. It also feels really cool to know that an image we helped produce may become a benchmark for a specific time in history, or be the representation of an era. It kind of immortalizes you in a way. For me personally, it’s a good way for me to preserve my youth so I can remember a time when I felt pretty good about my aesthetic. In addition to that, modeling can convey a message or story in a way that can’t be written in words, and you can sometimes use that to create a powerful statement that resonates with masses of people. As cheesy as it sounds, you can wield a lot of power modeling if you do it correctly.'

Working with Carl:

'Carl helped a lot with impromptu concepts once we started shooting, but most of the original concepts we used to anchor the shoot were my ideas. I sent him a folder full of images I wanted to try to emulate before we even started shooting. After looking over all the ones I found, it occurred to me that I was channeling some serious young Marlon Brando vibes because a lot of the pics involved guys smoking cigarettes in classy attire.

The other half of the photos I found were guys posing for fitness themed shoots. We decided to combine both themes together and see where it took us. The baseball bat prop was one of Carl’s improvised ideas, which ended up being one of my favorite shots. I played football, so I was more in character for the football equipment shots we did in the shoulder pads. He literally had me growl fiercely at the camera for a few of those shots lol. My intention was to create some tastefully sexy images that you might find in a Calvin Klein ad, and we were able to branch off that concept and make several more through some creative deliberation. That’s another thing I like about modeling; you never know quite what images you will end up with by the end of the shoot, and what you end up with could be better than what you originally planned on.'

Cover Boy: Marcel by Hans Fahrmeyer

While putting together the forward for The Naked Truth, I was struck with how many of photographer Hans Fahrmeyer's shots and models influenced my love of images of the male form. I have written before that my introduction to Han's work when I first got on-line was his work photographing the men of Vista Video.

Most video sites promote their product through images, but Hans' shots of the Vista models were works of art that caused thousands to join the site to see more of the men in those promotional images. One of my favorite Vista models, and a favorite of many others I know, was Marcel. I have seen images of Marcel from other photographers but there was something special that Hans captured that causes them to stand out.

It was no surprise that Hans chose Marcel as the cover for his photo compilation, The Naked Truth. When I think of Hans images, Marcel is one of several models that I consider synonymous his work. After seeing Marcel on the cover, I thought it was time to revisit his early work with Hans, and pull out some of my favorite shots.

Some of these images you have seen before, but I also tried to choose a few edits that have not been seen before. Marcel has an incredible ass, and beautifully captured every angle and curve. One of Hans signature shots is capturing his models with their jeans pulled down, both exposing, and beautifully highlighting their backside. Hans perfectly captures Marcel magnificent and muscled physique which is why these images remain popular and classic depictions of the male form.

These shots have me wanting to track down some of Marcel's old videos from Vista. I must find out if they are still available anywhere online... In the meantime, if you want to see more of Marcel, and more of Hans work, check out The Naked Truth on Amazon HERE:

Bravo

I'll never forget when I first discovered Bravo Magazine. It was the late 80's and I was about 12 or 13. We were sharing a large cottage on a lake with another family for a weekend. On one of the days we were there it was raining, hard. Everyone decided to go into town to kill time until the rain let up. I decided I didn't want to pile into the crowded car and convinced my parents to let me stay back alone. When everyone left, I started poking around the rented cabin for something interesting to do.

In one corner of the living room there was an old chest with glass doors. The shelves inside were piled with old board games, playing cards and a ton of old novels and magazines previous guests had left behind. In the pile of magazine there were a few issues of a magazine called Bravo that I had never seen before. At first I was excited, the tag of the magazine was the magazine for film and television and it looked along the lines of Tiger Beat. The magazine was in German, but that was ok, I was mostly interested in the pictures.

As I flipped through the magazine, I quickly saw that Tiger Beat it was not. In addition to articles on Rob Lowe and Michael J. Fox, the magazine had a bit more of a sexual vibe, with ads an images far too racy for an American teen magazine. The pièce de résistanc however was a section at the end of the magazine called Body check which featured a small clothed image of a teen aged guy, as well as large full frontal image. I hid every issue of that magazine in my suitcase and enjoyed them long after my vacation.

I later found an international magazine dealership in my city and continued to buy Bravo for many years. I haven't purchased an issue in years, but the last time I visited that store, Bravo was still on the stands. I later found out the magazine was quite controversial outside of Germany given that age of consent in German is much younger than in America. All of the models I included in this piece are between 18 and 20, the oldest model they seemed to feature in the section.

The body check section, also known as 'That's Me' was basically a 'get to know me' page for teens to introduce themselves to readers and the nude shots were promoting positive body image for both young men and women. There were a variety of body sizes, and a wide variety of penis sizes. Of course when I was a teen, it was all about the body, but as I got older I appreciated the magazine's, casual and positive depiction of the male form. There was no shame or embarrassment, just a sort of 'nice to meet you, and this is who I am' message that although erotic, which unlike most depictions of the nude male body in American media, was neither overly sexualized, or sensationalized.

Most of these images came from an old blog I used to love to frequent called Over Our Heads. I added a few more shots on THE OVER-FLOW HERE, or you can check out the archived Bravo posts from Over our Heads HERE:

Martin Milner: Tempting

$

I have not seen 1960's The Private Lives of Adam and Eve, but I was intrigued after seeing a promo still from the film on Instagram. The story involves a modern couple who dream that they are Adam and Eve with some of their friends and acquaintances taking on the various characters from the Book of Genesis in fantasy sequences. Although Mickey Rooney is listed as the star, (playing the Devil) Adam, is played by actor Martin Milner.

Milner is maybe best known for his TV roles in the 60's and 70's in shows like Route 66 and Adam 12. A little googling let me know Milner wasn't really known for his 'hunky' roles, but he fills out his 'creatively designed....' loin cloth just fine in this flick. What intrigued me about the shots was how vulnerable Milner's Adam looks, clearly being tempted and devoured by the female characters he is in Paradise with.

Given the 60's was the John Wayne decade, it is rare to see images of a hot hunky guy who is not the hero of the movie. As much as I was intrigued by these promotional images, I am not sure they were enough to have me actually look for, and watch the film. If anyone has seen it, and think it's worth a look, please let me know!
