Candelabra Confusion

I like Michael Douglas, loved him in The American President, Traffic, Wall Street and so many other great performance. Douglas was so compelling in Fatal Attraction that to me it was he, and not Glenn Close, who played the films true villain.

I don't however get all the love for his portrayal of Liberace in Beyond The Candelabra. I enjoyed the movie but it was not a great piece of Cinema. Not really good enough to ever watch again and not really bad or funny enough to reach the level of guilty pleasure. As I wrote in my original review, I though Douglas missed the mark in his performance. It was Matt Damon who I found much more compelling. All of the cast in fact, Damon, Rob Lowe and Scott Bakula inhabited their roles much more believably than Douglas. I am just not sure why he keeps winning all the awards when against Damon, Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino and others, for me, he put in one of the more weaker performances in his group. Not bad, just not to me, worthy of the praise he is getting.

Images In My Head: Brad Gosney by Brett Kiellerop

The catalyst for many of the pieces I write for FH begins with a thought. I might be walking down the street, sitting at my desk at work or lying in bed at night. It is not so much a complete idea, instead more of a piece of something that I think I can pull together into something interesting, something full. I think a lot of art begins this way. An idea, an inspiration, a way of thinking about a concept that you then can use your talent to bring to life. The particular talent is really not important, it could be writing, photography, painting or sculpture. The talent is the tool that is used, but it is the what initially floated through your head that really began the creative process.

So this begs the question, what is an artist. Is it someone who paints well, or is it someone who is visually able to create a masterpiece. Stephen Hawking is no less a scientist because others assist in sharing his theories and ideas. As I watched the PBS documentary Hawking last weekend, I thought of how frustrating it must be to have so many thoughts, so many ideas, yet struggle to be able to bring them to fruition. It was timely that around this same time, I reached out to Australian photographer Brett Kiellerop about a feature on the blog.

I came to Brett's work the usual way. I was working on one piece for the blog, reaching a photographer and there on his MM was this captivating avatar photo of a shirtless guy in a white bow tie standing on the beach. The model in the image was 25 year old Brad Gosney from Queensland and I loved that there was such a strong sense of joy in his images. Although he did not take the bow tie image, many of my favorite images of Brad came from his work with Brett Kiellerop. I especially loved some of the unique vantage points and angle Brett used to capture Brad's body and form. When I contacted Brett he was supportive but worried his work wasn't really good enough for public consumption. He was on board though for anything that could support or provide exposure for the wonderful models he had worked with.

'Brad is a charming, friendly, funny kiwi, and the moment I met him I knew I had to try and capture his easygoing nature with my camera. We struck up a friendship during the photo shoots, and remain good friends even now.'

'I strive to create unusual, quirky images. Typically, I would do at least 2 photo shoots with a model. The first photo-shoot would be fairly standard, allowing me to work out which poses suited the model, what personality quirks they had, etc. The second shoot was about the quirky, emotive images. After the first photo shoot, the model and I generally felt much more comfortable and at ease with each other, and as a result the images from the second shot were a lot more natural.'

The photos shown here are from two different shoots on two different days. The outdoor nudes were taken at a beach called Tyagarah, near Byron Bay. Brett says that there were a few spectators, but most of the people tended to shy away when they saw a camera crew, especially given that Tyagarah is a nude beach. Brett says that Brad didn’t seem to mind the spectators at all, as he’s quite uninhibited and outgoing. The photos with Brad were originally for intended to be part of ‘Aussie Gods,’ a project which Brett had been working on but was forced to abandon due to issues with vision failure.

'I had big dreams for my photography and it was very frustrating at first because I had (and still have) so many images in my head that I wanted to capture… all sorts of quirky things with zombie clowns and stuff like that… so it was very difficult to accept that I couldn’t see well enough to do a big photo shoot anymore. I can still do a small, intimate shoot as long as the light isn’t too bright, so these days I stick to doing small TFP shoots for upcoming models, giving them some images for their portfolio.'

Since his early twenties Brett has struggled with intracranial hypertension. His body produces too much spinal fluid and therefore must have it drained via lumbar puncture every three to six months.Although the constant pressure caused all sorts of neurological problems, Brett says that up until last fall it had been manageable. On one morning this past September, Brett woke up to find he had an extreme photo sensitivity and a very small tunnel of vision. Initially it felt as if he were completely blind.

'I could not navigate around my own home, yet alone the streets. After 8 months or so, I started to be able to process what vision I had in a different way. I could navigate my way to the shops. My hearing became quite acute. I became used to scanning my tunnel of sight around to build an overall picture of my environment. I don’t feel sorry for myself at all, and I would never want anyone else to either. I am a happy, positive person and am very lucky in the fact that I’ve had an amazing and supportive hubby for the last 18 years. I make a living as a writer, but who knows.. maybe one day I will be able to process my vision well enough to be a little more experimental with my photography again. I look back with fondness at my days of doing photo shoots for ‘Aussie Gods’. I met some amazing guys, many of whom still keep in touch.'

Being an artist, there continues to be a passion, a compulsion even to actualize those images in his head. If you head over to Brett's Model Mayhem page, you can see his new work with model Jackson Lombardi. It is quite incredible to see the differences, and similarities to Brett's previous work, including his collaboration with Brad. Although the scope is more defined and view less panoramic than the images here, the beauty, especially the visual detail is clearer than ever.

I was always aware that James Earl Jones was an accomplished actor, both on stage and on screen. It was still a revelation however how incredible he was on last week's Big Bang Theory. Jones, along with a cameo by Carrie Fisher brought the series one of it's best episodes to date. Kudos Darth Vader!

Lathered in Lotan

'I would love to say I don’t care about self-image, but I’d be lying. I got about twelve hairs on my chest and a snail train, so they have to go, the occasional sunbed and I moisturise everyday, but I’ve done that since I was ten.'

Although it was Danny that initiated my viewing of Confessions Of A Male Stripper, it was Lotan who most intrigued me. Incredibly hot, incredibly smart mixed in with a heaping dose of Douchebag.

Unlike Danny, still enthusiastic and native about the realities of the business, Lotan has moved towards and through being bitter. I am not being critical of him, just the opposite. Lotan's dream was never to slip off his undies for a room full of screaming fans, despite how great he looks doing it. Lotan was scouted after being seen dancing, and the promise of big money for little work was far too enticing.

The reality is though, the money is not that great and the work harder than promised. Being a stripper may only require you to be on for a couple of hours a day, or less. But, in order to maintain the body needed, many of the other 23 hours of the day are devoted to maintaining the body others pay to want to see. It is also not a long career, so pretty much as soon as you get even a little bit of success, you're already pretty much yesterday's news.

Even with his attitude, I liked Lotan. Yes, he was arrogant, some might even felt him homophobic for his displeasure at having to take a gig at a gay club. I didn't see him that way really. I saw more a man, like so many others, who realized his dreams are slipping away and is tired of being groped, manhandled, mostly by women, and manipulated by company's profiting off of his back, and backside. In the documentary, Lotan is bitter at everyone, his boss, his customers and himself. His uncomfortably at stripping at the gay club, (although his facial expressions were sort of erotically fun) was equally matched by his distain for stripping for women as well.

Oh Danny Boy...

It was Casperfan's site that first introduced me to stripper Danny Steel in the documentary Confessions Of A Male Stripper. Although I am posting the entire show below, Casperfan has a lot of captures of Danny from the documentary as well as a download of most Danny's best moments.

Danny is simply delicious! I am not sure if his appeal translates in images, it was his adorable accent and hopeful enthusiasm that attracted me, even before the skivvies were pulled down.

A former international rugby player, after an injury, Danny decided to put years of finely tuning his athletic physique for something just as exciting as international rugby, stripping! One of the UK's youngest strippers, the documentary explores Danny's first time on stage, taking it all off and being educated on the necessity of using a penis pump.

Danny and Lotan (below) were two of my favorites from the documentary which I encourage you to check out. Both had dreams of becoming famous and adored, Danny still the dreamer, whereas Lotan has had his full of groping women, and the lifestyle. Danny seems to roll with whatever happens on stage, even when he loses his flag...

Confessions of A Male Stripper seeks to explore the lives of the men who choose to take it all off for cash. To me, it's true revelation is something many of us have known for years. Women, when in power, don't just demonstrate the same strong sexual appetite as men, they show an equal, or even greater perpensity towards aggression than most men. These women are out for more than just a fun night on the town...

Although Danny is enthusiastic and hopeful, there is a sadness laced within his story, of one dream cut short, and another possibly unattainable and unrealistic. All that being said, there is something intensely likable and endearing about Danny, a quality that comes across more when he's speaking, than stripping. Whatever that quality is, if Danny were able to market, I would want to buy.

In A Perfect World: Joey Suarez by Cibo Photography

'The creative process I go thru on a shoot improves greatly working with a model like Joey Suarez'

Most readers of FH know my passion for the use of windows within photography of the male form. So... when I saw the incredible image of model Joey Suarez above, I knew I wanted to find out a bit more about the model, and the artist who captured Joey, so beautifully capturing the view.

San Antonio photographer Cibo states he specializes in sensual male images which appeal to the men and women who love men. Many artists use the term sensual, but not all of them successfully blend it within their images as exquisitely as Cibo is able to. In order to capture the sensual essence of a subject, you have to focus as much on a model's soul as you do their specific body parts. The emotion comes not from how big, toned, or tanned a particular body part looks but instead, how the model's body, their eyes in particular, are able to channel the photographers vision. Cibo loves working with all models regardless of experience but says there is often a fluidity to the creative process when working with an experienced model like 21 year old Joey Suarez that improves the end creative result exponentially as well as often being economically more efficient.

'I love working with new models for sure, but it may take more than one session to really get solid images. In a perfect world they would all be like Joey Suarez in terms of being an absolute professional. I think Joey is a major talent. He just has finished a new music video, he has acted in films, writes and performs his own music and regularly sings and dances in live musicals. Joey is a busy guy an in my opinion I consider him an exceptional model to work with.'

Joey's experience in front of the camera comes from years of training and hard work in order to seamlessly channel the complexities of emotion through whatever art form he working within. A professionally trained actor, pianist, vocalist, dancer, and music director Joey is able to use skills from one area to compliment and improve another. Artists, singers and dancers especially, often have an ability to create through movement, pose and emotion some of my favorite, and most memorable captured moments. Joey perceives each skill and profession as a piece of the another and utilizes new experiences and talents to improve, and learn more about, the ones he has already embarked on.

Bed Bath And Beyond: Travis by Suntown Photography

'Every man has a right to a Saturday night bath.'
Lyndon B. Johnson

Whenever I profile the work of Dave Butt from Suntown Photography, I look forward to spending time in the beautiful locations he shoots in and around Banbury, England. Dave has taken me, and of course his models, along with him to beautiful English countryside's, through overgrown secluded gardens, and in old dirty barns and sheds to shoot. This time, we are staying clean, squeaky clean, inside with 21 year Travis Hodge as he spends a leisurely evening at home.

'I think is it a real shame that guys who are naturally hairy, or have hairy legs, feel they have to cover up so as not to get disparaging remarks such as being told they look like a Gorilla or Wooky. I would rather see body hair to tattoos or body piercing any day.'

The quote above comes from the first piece I did on Dave's work back in 2012. It was the natural, unencumbered and often beautifully retro, way Dave's eye catches his subjects that first drew me to his work. Travis certainly fits well with Dave's philosophy and I love his look, especially his brown eyes and curve of his lips. Travis looks almost like a hybrid of model Ben Godfre and the Creek's Dawson Leary.

Dave reports the shoot took place in West London on a wet and miserable day this past January. Travis had done a couple of shoots before but was still fairly new to posing totally nude. Travis keep fit through sports and manages to schedule shoots in between finishing essays and attending classes at University.

'He's a really nice guy and great personality. I am certainly hoping to work with him again in the coming year/s and his pics will be appearing in my book "Young Otters 2" which will available late in 2014.'

I tried to resist... Like the rest of you, I fell in lust when first seeing the image of Dan Osborne texting in his undies. I headed over to Casperfan and drooled and downloaded his nude scenes from TOWIE, (The Only Way Is Essex) the 'scripted' reality show Dan appears on. I began to put a story together for the blog, but in researching Dan I quickly saw his images were rightly so now EVERYWHERE so I dropped it. I know that I have this annoying tendency to not want to post images, and write about people who are already saturated enough on the web.

Dan would not allow it however. Even his speedo wearing appearances on the UK reality show SPLASH, and subsequent interviews on the show with Tom Daley I passed up. My God he made it hard, then appearing in the latest Naked issue of Attitude! Finally he broke me, not just by the site of his naked body but by that body, and that smile in motion through the gifs created by other lovers of Dan. One can only hold on so long before exploding!

Canadian Institute of Diversity and Inclusion

Ever since FH has been around, I have covered the Olympics and my favorite athletes from the games. Sports have always been an important part of my life, since I could walk it was hockey in the winter, basketball the fall and baseball in the summer. Like many, my interest in the games is low to non-existent this year. I would like to say I am making an loud official protest, but disqualifying myself from watching just sort of happened naturally. Throughout my life, I have always tended to distance myself from cruelty, I state what is bothering me and simply walk away. Some people scream from the rafters, others voice opposition and use their actions as much as their words.

Above: Charles Reid, Mark McMorris, Maxence Parrot and Sebastien Toutant.

My only regret is not being able to shed some light and attention on the athletes from the games. At the top of my list was going to be the Canadian men's snowboarding team. Athletic and adorable all, especially 21 year old Sebastien Toutant (below) from Montreal. Still lots of winter left in 2014! ;)

Intimate Interior by Tom Silk

'Anybody can photograph a pretty face, or a perfect body. That's not my goal. Besides, there is no such thing as perfect.'

Perfection may be an ideal, but there are images which exquisitely capture both the beauty, and the imperfections that help make a model fascinating to capture. Here, In this series, Silk's mastery of portraiture and artistic body shots are magnificently on display.

Last week we focused on Tom's work with Sean on location in California's Joshua Tree National Park. (Live The Life) Today, we go inside, joining the artist as he shoots in studio, creating a series of intensely intimate captures of Sean. This series of captures, the first image being my favorite, are great examples of Tom's goal to bring the soul and character to the fore.
