Favorite Film of 2013

Tonight the Academy will give out it's Oscar for Best Picture of the Year. If I was voting for one of the 9 films chosen, my ballot would go to 12 Years A Slave. A beautifully satisfying film with Oscar worthy performances from all of it's cast. They are saying this was a good year for movies, but to me it was more a great year for actors. I have seen six of the nine nominated films, but except for 12 years, I think I liked the performances more than the movies themselves.

Sandra Bullock was incredible in Gravity, but the movie didn't equal her power. Leonardo DiCaprio was brilliant in the The Wolf Of Wall Street but his character so repulsive, I couldn't wait for the film to end. It seemed on a loop of one long scene of Leonardo drunk and high stumbling around over and over for the 3 hours. The films editor best not win anything! I loved Christian Bale in American Hustle, but didn't find the story that compelling. Dench, Mcconaughey and Leto all Oscar worthy but the performances and the film I enjoyed most this year did not come from actors.

No It was not Sting, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie or Jagger that had the lead in my favorite film, but they were all in it....

The film that I most enjoyed, that brought me the most joy, and packed the biggest emotional punch was director Morgan Neville's Twenty Feet From Stardom. If you have not heard about, google, if you have not seen it, find it. The story of the back ups singers, working with some the worlds greatest bands, and most successful singers is a fantastic film full of music, and heartache and behind the scenes of a brutally tough business.

I thought I knew a bit about the music business, but it is really so much more business that I ever imagined, just ask the incredible Darlene Love. I had heard of Love and Merry Clayton before, but most of the other singers profiled were just voices til the film gave them names, and lives. It is shocking, yet not surprising that the music business is so full of non singers. You would think it impossible, but these women and their powerful instruments make Britney, Abdul, Levato, hell even Madonna to shame. They prove a gifted voice isn't anything in music if you can't fill the seats.

Britney may not be able to sing a note, but a bit of sex appeal, tabloid worthy personal issues, snakes and a few catchy tunes, have her hauling in the Vegas dough. After watching this documentary, and listening to the phenomenal talent that is Lisa Fischer (above) Britney's success seems less a triumph and more a statement on the lack of taste on the part of the American music buying public. I had not heard of Lisa before, but I am addicted to her voice now and hope to soon fill my home with her music and the clear and heavenly tones of her voice. The women, and the few men, 20 Feet From Stardom follow all have different goals. Some want the limelight, others are happy to blend their voices in harmony with others. Either way, their lives more interesting, and stories far more compelling than most of the characters who inhabited the 9 films nominated.

The Trip

Back when I was about 19 or 20, I accompanied my parents what was our last trip together. The purpose of the trip was my cousins wedding, but my parents decided to extend the vacation and rented a cottage for a few days after the wedding. On the shelf in the cottages livingroom was a shelf of books left presumably by past guests. Harlequin romances, Sidney Sheldon novels and biographies filled the shelves. One of the books was The Fonda's: A Hollywood Dynasty. I didn't actually finish the whole book, but skimmed enough to figure out Peter was actually the most interesting in the family.

For some reason this memory came back to for the first time last week. While searching for images of actor Bruce Dern for my Oscar post above I came across images of Brude assisting and holding a naked Fonda. Of course, I was curious about the scene and it's context within the movie. The scene is from 1967's The Trip and the trip is not a beach or resort, but instead the trip refers to LSD induced hallucinations.

The movie was written by actor Jack Nicholson and according to reports, Nicholson wrote John, the character Bruce Dern ended playing, for himself. Dern says director Roger Corman would not agree to Nicholson playing the role and chose him instead. As part of their preparation for the film, Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Nicholson all supposedly engaged in a group LSD trip as research.

I did manage to get my hands on a copy of The Trip and although tried, did not make my way all the way through. The editing is so clunky, obviously an attempt to recreate a high, but it left me more nauseous. Fonda does have a great body and a sex appeal which carried me through, at least until the end of the scene I have capped here. It certainly didn't win any awards, but it was Dern's 2014 nomination that led me back to check out this 1967 film.

Favorite Films From Meryl Streep

I have been a little hard on Ms. Streep the past year on FH. I didn't give August:Osage County (which marks Streep's 18th Oscar nomination) the best review (HERE:) nor was I enthusiastic about her taking on the role of the Witch in Into the Woods. (HERE:) Truth is however, Streep one of the worlds best actors, and like so many, my favorite actress to watch onscreen. Streep never fails to interest me, even when the films around her don't. I have been watching, and learning from her since I can remember. Compiling a list of her best work would have been impossible, choose 5 of my favorites was just a little bit easier. These may not be her 'best' but they are films that effected me in some way. I have not seen everything Streep has done, so some (like The Bridges Of Madison County) could not be counted. I am Sophie's Choice might have made the list, but it has been years since I have seen it and couldn't find a copy this week to re watch. Comments on your favorite Meryl moments are welcomed!

Silkwood (1983)
Best Actress: Nominated

Silkwood was the first Streep movie I ever saw. It was on VHS and I certainly didn't initially appreciate her work, and the film at the time. Years later I saw the film again and this time I loved every second of it. I didn't like Karen Silkwood, but I loved Meryl Streep, and Kurt Russell's chest.) Watching Silkwood again last week reaffirmed it is my favorite of Meryl's films.

Kramer Vs Kramer 1979
Best Supporting Actress: Won

I didn't like Joanna Kramer either, but Meryl pulled off a character some felt evil, others felt heartbreaking. I think I was on the evil side when I first saw Kramer Vs Kramer so long ago, again on VHS. Upon second, and third viewing I felt for Joanna, so flawed and unlikable, so human.

The Hours 2002

Kidman got the Oscar, (I would have given it to Julianne) but Meryl's section of the film became my favorite. Not sure why, but I think it came down to the small moments. Clarissa with her daughter, with Richard (above) or Carissa just cooking. Meryl did not have the dramatic moments the other two stories had, but yet I found her story the most compelling.

The Devil Wears Prada 2006
Best Actor: Nominated

I have to admit, I did not like The Devil Wears Prada when first seeing in the theatre. But... every time it plays, and replays on television, I usually stop to watch. It is a movie that is so much fun to watch, (at least til the story moved to Paris) and a movie in which Streep allows me to temporarily relinquish my bias again Anne Hathaway and just enjoy the ride.

Death Becomes Her 1992

When Meryl began her foray into comedies I was not along for the ride. Most, seemed below her and I longed for her to return to drama. Maybe she needed the break for us to again appreciate her dramatic skills, or maybe these films were better than I first remembered. Death Becomes Her, and hell even She-Devil (which I profiled HERE:) look better watching now in my thirties then I remember when I watched them in my teens. I still am not sure they are great, but unlike Streep's character Madeline Ashton, this film gets better with age.

Honorable Mentions:
Some of my other favorites from Meryl:

For my own Reasons: Angels In America (above), One True Thing, The Deer Hunter, Out Of Africa, Adaptation, Julia & Julia and the closing credits, and only those credits, from Mamma Mia.

Normally Naked: Jason by Donald Chambers

There is a reason why there are not a flood of blogs and tumblrs featuring Rick Day's images of the swamps of the mid-west, Bruce Weber's visual tribute to the oboe or Donald Chambers colorful salute to tropical fish. If an artist is going to devote their time, money, heart and soul into a subject, it sort of helps....if they love it. One of the most interesting parts of photography featuring the male form is of course that very male form. Some may believe it unprofessional to say that photographers of the art form love the male body, but have to. The passion is required in order to obtain the interesting, erotic and often powerful ways in which they permanently capture it.

So.... In order to shoot the male body, one must have one in front of them. Model Mayhem has become one of the most popular ways for photographers to connect with models. Photographers can see images of the model prior to hiring or a setting up a shoot. Models can check out the portfolio of an artist and then decide whether they are comfortable with the style in which the artist shoots.

When models join ModelMayhem, one of the boxes they are asked to check is whether or not they will shoot nudes. It is immensely fascinating to me how many models check 'no' yet have nudes in their portfolio. It is equally interesting how many check 'yes' then balk when asked to shoot nude. It is understandable. For many the decision to drop trou for the camera is also connected to their values and beliefs, their relationships with family and partners and maybe most importantly, their future career plans.

There is also sometimes a bit of a game at play. It is the modeling industry and money is of course a factor. Models have to be careful not just how much exposure occurs, but also the frequency. Some models choose to shoot nude, sometimes with many different photographers, only to find themselves overexposed, it can be a tricky path to find the right balance and the right photographers to work with.

Whenever I interview a model I am always curious as to the factors that come in to the decision to shoot nude. For many it is a tough decision, one they agonize over for weeks. For others, like Jason, the choice is a little easier. Sometimes there is a lot of negotiation before a shoot to get a models pants off, is the nudity implied, side, full frontal? With this shoot however, photographer Donald Chambers had no such issues, if anyting it might have been difficult to get Jason to put his pants back on as Jason loves to be naked, anywhere...anytime.

'Jason loves being naked! He was a pleasure to work with, no hang ups about his body but then why would he, it is perfect.'

Who better to answer an Donald had placed seeking nude male models, than a nudist. Jason is a student and world traveler and part of his love for traveling is visiting the nudist areas everywhere that he visits. Donald reports that Jason is very popular at the nudist resorts and beaches he visits and that Jason loves all of the attention he gets. I love that Jason loves the attention as it is always refreshing when the model in front of the camera is comfortable and as passionate about the work as the artist behind it. BTW, I would enjoy seeing Donald's work with tropical fish, might even buy a Day book on swamps but despite my love of music, would most likely pass on anyone's visual tribute to the oboe.

Frantic naked man causes middle-of-the-night ruckus in Butte neighborhood!

A naked man claiming he was being chased by another man with a gun caused a disturbance with neighbors early Saturday on the 1700 block of Wall Street, police said. A homeowner, Nate Yakawich, was awoken about 3:30 a.m. by someone banging on his front door and frantically ringing the door bell.

“I opened the door and flipped on porch light,” Yakawich said.'And there is a guy that is just buck naked holding his crotch. He said‘I know I'm naked. This is embarrassing. I was attacked down the street and I'm being chased by a guy with a gun.' Yakawich said the naked man asked to come into the house to call the police.

“It was a little past my crazy meter there, so I didn't let him in,”

'Last night was amazing. Ron Jravolta introduced me to so many of my idols. Rhett Midler. Lisa Minooli. And Borno!'
@AdeleDaZeme

I enjoyed last nights Oscars. It had a few great moments and Ellen held up her end of the deal. The pizza joke went on a bit too long, but worth the moment below. Poor Liza however couldn't seem to cut a break and there is something both heartbreaking and hilarious about her attempting to jump into the worlds most tweeted photo (above) and grabbing onto Lupita Nyong'o as she headed up for her award. The one major downside for me was Kim Novak's appearance. Not Kim herself, it was wonderful to see old Hollywood out on the stage. It was the millions of Andrew Dice Clay wannabe's who take any and every opportunity to belittle the appearance of another that left me cold. Kim's appearance was visually obvious to all, but the key to being a human being, and not a bully, is the ability not to crack one liners at the flaws and pain of another.

Favorite Face Of The Day: Juan Pablo Di Pace

Although I tuned into the premiere of Dallas to catch Josh Henderson in his boxer briefs it was this new face in the opening credits that kept me past the opening scene...

Argentine actor, singer and model Juan Pablo Di Pace certainly has a face, and body, that has you stop and take notice. Although his appearance on Dallas didn't exactly have me forget the shows lack of ability to put together a decent story or scene, the eye candy did have me quite not so annoyed about it.

Some of you might remember Juan Pablo from his many television and movie roles including 2008's Mamma Mia. Juan Pablo first came to my attention based on a headline, one that I think might grab your attention as well... ‘Opera shrank my wang!’

That Opera Juan Pablo referenced was Rigoletto. The wang in question is shown here from the Opera's official promotional photo, (above) and an actual image from the scene (below). I think Juan Pablo had a point and a wee bit of photoshop shrinkage might be in play. You can see, and listen to the beautiful score, for yourself in the video below. To cast your own opinion on the whether digital desizing did occur, the scene is about at the eight minute mark.

Auld Lang Syne: Nigel by Chris Teel

Yes, New Years Eve was over two months ago. It is now history, a part of the past. The sentiment however, which surrounds the evening, is one that figures both literally, and metaphorically in this piece featuring photographer Chris Teel's images of Nigel.

Since the beginning of FH in 2007, I have now published over 9000 posts. Thousands of images, celebrity profiles, commentaries on pop culture, stories and of course model and artist profiles. One of my closest collaborators over the years has been Toronto's Chris Teel who when I did a quick scan in my post list has appeared on FH in close to 100 of those 9000 posts.

Chris has introduced myself, and readers of the blog, to male models who have become not only favorites of mine, but favorites of readers of the blog. I cannot possibly name them all but I know from the blog stats, many of you still enjoy revisiting Chris's work on the blog. Some of, but not nearly all include models; Samuel Boux, Claudiu, Quinn Christopher Jackson and model search winner Matt Eldracher.

2014 marks the sixth year Chris's work has appeared on the blog and today's post, the first one this year. I couldn't have asked for a better set, and model than 26 year old Montreal model Nigel. Nigel has been modeling for a few years now, but it was just last fall I that was introduced to his work. I am not the only to have discovered how impressive Nigel is in front of the camera as he seems to be busier than ever shooting the last six months or so. It is no surprise, with his incredible body and soulful brown eyes, Nigel beautifully fills every inch of each frame.

Chris and Nigel had actually booked a shoot in Montreal 2 years ago for a New Year's Eve Day. Nigel ended up having to cancel as he had hurt his leg and ended up in the emergency room that morning. Two years later, again around New Year, Nigel contacted Chris about rescheduling. The reason for the similar timing was that Nigel was going to be in Toronto for a New Years Eve celebration.

'Nigel was great! The day before our shoot he'd cut his forehead with a skate and showed up with a small gash in his forehead. Luckily I was able to edit it out in post production! As well as having to deal with the injury, the room we shot in was incredibly cold. Nigel was a true professional and pushed through.'

Kinda new, kinda WOW, Charlie

I am not sure I will be tuning into this season's DWTS but if I do, it will because of Charlie White. I know some might feel it unfair an Olympic gold medalist for ice dancing is competing along side Winnie Cooper and Lando Calrissian but that is part of the deal.

I pretty much stuck my 'non viewing' pledge with the Olympics (Hockey finals aside...) and the only thing I really missed was seeing Charlie on the ice. My Charlie crush is a few years old, such a likable guy with a kind smile and oh that head of hair! Hopefully DWTS will peel the spandex off him a little for some great shirtless moments.

Taking To His Bed: More Zach Clemens by studioAtruong

Last Friday I introduced FH readers to studioAtruong's incredible images with model Zach Clemens. In that feature, Spark, studioAtruong's Alain captured Zach in an wide variety of shots and poses that beautifully showcased the special qualities and energy within Zach that help make Zach, and his images, so irresistible.

Last week's post was so full of energy that poor Zach was totally wore out. Exhausted, Zach needed to take a break and was forced to take to his bed. Thankfully for us, he didn't fall asleep right away and the erotic energy remained long enough for Alain to again perfectly capture the magic.
