Pool or Ocean?

First two shots by Andriy

Today FH asks the burning question, do you prefer swimming in pools, or the ocean.  Now given it's FH, we have to clarify by swimming, we mean naked swimming, which means there are greater risks to certain body parts when it comes to chlorine rashes and jellyfish stings.  Below, check out my pro/con list, and enjoy the many visuals over the next two pages to help you with this incredibly tough decision.

Pros

Ocean:                                                    Pools:
Tons of room to swim                              Close proximity to other bodies
Waves yanking down suits                       Butt crack exposure
Buoyancy                                               Diving board
Ocean air                                               Regulated temperature
Hot Lifeguards                                       Hot lifeguards

Last two images by Getfitnoel

Cons:

Ocean:                                                      Pools:
Jelly fish                                                   Chemicals
Fecal Matter                                             Urine
Salt in crevices                                         Chlorine in eyes, on skin
Under toe                                                Injuring yourself on concrete
Sharks                                                    Eels and leaches

'Obscenity only comes in when the mind despises and fears the body, and the body hates and resists the mind.'
 D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley's Lover

She was beautiful and sensual, trapped in a loveless marriage. He was her husband's servant. Born into worlds as far apart, they found a passionate world of their own

Of course most remember Nicholas Clay's most famous nude scene, especially his outdoor shower in 1981's Lady Chatterley's Lover. If you want to join Sylvia Kristel for another peak at Clay's rinsing off, check out the clip below.

'Merlin the magician helps Arthur Pendragon unite the Britons around the Round Table of Camelot, even as dark forces conspire to tear it apart.'

I have two memories of watching (or partly watching) 1981's Excalibur.  The first,  when my brother rented a VHS copy in the late 80's.  I was about 11 or 12 and found it incredibly boring.  I didn't stick around after about the first 20 minutes or so, I think I went upstairs and watched Full House.  Clearly, my cinematic tastes had not been fully activated....

Ten or fifteen years later, it's the early 2000's, and during a 'movie night', someone brought Excalibur, claiming it's their favorite movie ever, and we simply must watch it....  I didn't, well, not much of it.  This time I did however notice Lancelot, (Nicolas Clay) and knew who Helen Mirren was, but didn't enjoy it anymore than my first attempted viewing.

I stayed through the entire film this time, but mostly talked to the others on the couch, barely watching, except of course when Lancelot was naked in the woods.  I still don't quite get the film, I want to try another viewing, but fear a third repeat experience.  So much of the film, like Lancelot's nude scene, is edited in an odd dream like fashion that I find hard to engage with.  Maybe now that I'm older, I'll have the patience, but sort of think my patience, may actually be even less forgiving.

I did go back and watch the section featuring Clay's nudity for this piece, and found it as frustrating as the first time. Although a naked Clay, wrestling with a armored Clay is appealing, it's but a brief few seconds.  I can assure you of one thing, the promo stills for the love scene, show much more than the film itself, in fact they appear staged to make the love scene seem more... well, just more, than it appeared in the film.

'In a decaying mansion on the outskirts of London, middle-aged spinster Maura Prince (Patricia Neal) lives a life of drudgery caring for her blind and domineering mother (Pamela Brown). Into their dysfunctional lives, a handsome stranger appears, riding on a motorbike and looking for work as a handyman. Young Billy Jarvis (Nicholas Clay) soon makes himself indispensable around the house, but his angelic features mask dysfunctions that threaten both women's lives.'

Ten years before he took it all off in Lady Chatterley's Lover, Nicholas Clay took it off in the creepy 1971 film The Night Digger.   The 1971 British thriller film based on the novel Nest in a Fallen Tree by Joy Cowley and was adapted for the screen Roald Dahl.  Dahl's wife at the time, actress Patricia Neal played Maura in the film. The Night Digger was the American title; it was originally released in the UK as The Road Builder.

My memories of Nicholas Clay in Lady Chatterly's Lover were fuzzy, I think maybe a late night viewing on the movie channel was my introduction, but Clay's outdoor wash off didn't take hold as it did this time around.  Clay's sex appeal in the 1981 film had me looking forward to seeing more, and I wasn't disappointed.

I really enjoyed my recent viewing of Clay in the 1982 film adaptation of Agatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun.  I love all things Diana Rigg related, and had heard, but never seen this film before.  If you google search Clay, images of the scenes with Clay in his tight black, cheek baring bathing suit, frequently pop up.

I think I most enjoyed 1971's, The Night Digger, a moody, very seventies thriller with great performances.  It also includes Clay first nude movie nude scenes, ten years before he took it off again in Lady Chatterley's Lover.

The Last Days of Pompeii (1981)

Clay's film roles slowed down after Lady Chatterley, with his last film appearance in 1987 alongside Eric Stotz in Lionheart. Clay continued to work steadily, but on television in many series, mini-series and TV movies. Clay died in London in 2000 at just 54 years old. I'm grateful for the FH reader who flagged me check out Clay's films, and draw attention to short, but memorable career.

Evil Under the Sun (1982)

Although there wasn't any nudity in 1982's Evil Under The Sun, Clay did get a little cheeky in his black speedo as Patrick Redfern.   I loved watching this flick, not only is Clay in his black speedo for much of the film, we also get to see Olenna Tyrell and the Dowager Countess (co-stars Diana Rigg and Maggie Smith) throwing barbs at each other, 1980's style.

Blast From the Past: Nicholas Cortland

Nicholas Cortland's career began on soaps in the early 50's, and in the next twenty years, he had only a handful of roles before maybe his most famous, in the 1972 horror film The Frogs.  I think I have a memory of watching The Frogs on TV when I was a kid, I can't say for sure, but when I found a copy to watch for this piece, there was something it about that seemed oddly familiar.  It may have been the Southern Swam location, and actor Ray Milland, in yet another low budget campy classic.  I didn't however, have any memories of Cortland in the film..

When searching for info on the actor, Frogs seems to be the project mentioned the most.  Although Cortland appears shirtless in the promotional image below, I actually couldn't find a shirtless scene in the copy I found, not sure if anyone remembers one.

Frogs (1972)

Although Cortland's television and film career may not be that memorable, he does seem to have made a mark in the theatre. Legendary playwright Tennessee Williams wrote dual roles in his 1976 play 'This Is' with Cortland in mind. Although Cortland never appeared nude on film, (not that I could find) the actor did a few memorable photo shoots for Playgirl, and for the cover of After Dark.

Playgirl, November 1973

After Frogs, Cortland went on to do another handful of roles, most guest spots on network television, ending four years before his death in 1988. Below is a section of his obituary from the New York Times.

'Nicholas Cortland, a stage, film and television actor, died of AIDS on Aug. 21 at his home in Manhattan. He was 47 years old.

Mr. Cortland was born in Rockville Centre, L.I., and was a graduate of Hofstra University. In 1976, he performed lead roles in each of the three productions in the American Conservatory Theater's 10th-anniversary season in San Francisco. At that time, Tennessee Williams wrote ''This Is (An Entertainment)'' for Mr. Cortland, who also starred there in Michael McClure's ''General Gorgeous'' and Edward Albee's ''Tiny Alice.''  Mr. Cortland's longtime companion was Peter R. Kruzan/.

A Lil Somethin' Somethin': Benjamin by Lights On Studio

Somethin' Somethin'
Something, only sexier. Almost invariably found in the phrase "...a little somethin' somethin'..." because a LOT of somethin' somethin' would be too much of a good thing.

It's always fascinating to me to think about why certain images, and especially why certain models, have an impact on me.  It's fascinating, because it's not always about a pose, or an image, or even the looks of the model  It's not even directly about personality, although personality certainly plays a role.  It's more a quality, a certain somethin' somethin'  some models have, and perceptive photographers are able to capture.

I use the word perceptive, as it's not just the visual, but the combination of what's seen, and what's felt when seeing it.  That's exactly what happened when I first saw Tom Nakielski's (Lights On Studio) work with Benjamin.  Some of you may remember a naked Benjamin, cover in chicks, baby chicks, for two FH pieces from this past Easter. (HERE:)

Because of my love of holiday imagery, when a holiday is approaching, Tom will often throw out an idea he has for a shoot, and maybe send on an image of the model he is planning on shooting with.  When Tom sent on a couple of shots of Benjamin, I was totally on board.  He had a great face and body, and the most beautiful brown eyes.  Those 'sampler' shots however, didn't prepare me to seeing Tom's final images.

There was something incredibly hot to me about how Benjamin came across in the shoot.  How he seemed to have so much fun with the concept, how smooth he appeared doing his best Fred Astaire impression in his white tux, and how sexy he looked holding, and having those baby chick play upon his beautiful behind.

Not all male models would have the skill, let alone the interest, to strip down and play with baby chicks for an Easter shoot.  That's why some concepts, and specific photographers, cane bring out that certain somethin' somethin is the models they shoot.   There are some great shots on Benjamin's Model Mayhem page, but Tom's images captured a charming, suave sexy side of Benjamin that I really loved.

When Tom sent on the Easter images, he also shared that he and Benjamin captured some non-holiday shots.  Tom wanted to take advantage of having Benjamin in the studio and shoot some other themes.  After the Easter baskets were put away, and the chicks were safely back in their cardboard box, Tom wanted to switch to a more figure study focus, and some pin-up style images with Benjamin.

'It was fun working with Benjamin and the baby chicken on this collaboration.  Usually, after I do a themed session, I like to get into a different mode and do some play with the light and some more dynamic and sensual posing. I love creating scenes with dramatic lighting and poses. The session is free-flowing. There is a feel in the air of artistic creativity. Benjamin was keen on the light play, and he has a physique that is perfect to sculpt with light. We were both attuned to the creative forces in play. What fun!'

Nicholas Cortland

Recently, when cleaning out my e-mails, I found a message from a FH reader asking me to do a piece on couple of Nicholas'.  The e-mail was from last year, and I remember starting a folder, but then getting sidetracked by whatever piece I was working on at the time.

I had heard of Nicholas Clay, and his role in Lady Chatterley's Lover, but didn't really remember seeing anything from Nicholas Cortland.   I enjoyed scouring the net, and getting to know both actors, and their careers better.  Check out my piece on Nicholas Cortland (last piece below), and head over toPAGE 2 to check out several pieces featuring Nicholas Clay, including only his nude scene in Lady Chatterley, but also an earlier nude scene from a decade before.

'Restaurant work is like a sport because you have to think quickly and be a team player, otherwise the kitchen doesn’t work'

July was a busy month for me, and I've only just started watching this summer's edition of Masterchef.  I'm only a few episodes in, but crushing hard over contestant, and recent Harvard Grad, 19 year old Nick DiGiovanni.  I cheated, and look ahead, and know he hasn't been eliminated yet, so am looking forward to him whipping up more treats in the kitchen.  DiGiovanni is adorable, and I especially love his stance when facing the judges for their comments.

Drawn to the Damaged: Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs

'At night, I fall asleep to you, and in the morning, I wake up to you. I kind of feel closer to you than I do anyone in the world.'
Nate Jacobs

Nate Jacobs is one of the coldest, cruelest sociopaths on television.  He's also one of the most realistically drawn characters on the show.  I know, as I had a 'Nate' in my life, and the show's writer, and Jacob Elordi's portrayal are spot on.

I crushed over Jacob after seeing him as the resident hottie in the teen romance The Kissing Booth.  This made seeing his turn as Nate, all that more impressive.  Nate, and Jacob, have everything on the surface many are so drawn to.  Great looks, hot body, star athlete.  Nate's the hot  jock, blessed with privileged and popularity.  Nate's also incredibly damaged, sexually screwed up and primed and desperate to deal with his pain by inflicting it those around him, especially those attracted to him.

My 'Nate' was a also sexually confused.  He defined himself as straight, and always had a girlfriend to mistreat and cheat on, but also willing and able to use his body with men if it got him something he wanted.  He had boundaries of course, you've heard them before, no kissing, and he's not doing that!  But he'd let you have a little fun down there if wanted something.  When it was over, and he got what he wanted, (usually some cash or to borrow my car) he was out of there, usually with a threat never to say anything about what just happened.

Euphoria

For a short while in my twenties, I was drawn to the damage.  I thought I could help him, thought he needed a friend, someone to trust.  In the end, I understood I was using him as much as he was using me.  Having the hot jock spend the night at my house, in my bed, was a high, even though I had to give up so much for the privilege.

My 'Nate' treated me like gold for about six months before it went down hill.  When I started saying no, it got ugly.  Although he never physically struck out at me, he kicked in a few doors in my house, dented the side of my car, and cost me quite a bit to fix the holes in the walls he punched in when angry.    I didn't put up with it for long, and although it was a bit of a slow process, realized I was better off with him out of (or at least more distant) from my life.

The interesting thing about 'Nate's' is how much you can miss the drama and the high.  When Nate was staying with me, I couldn't wait for him to leave.  When he left, I longed for his return.  Even though he's been out of my life for a very long time, I still sometimes miss that period of my life.  I would NEVER ever want to repeat it, or every let him back in, but even those moment of missing, speak to how dangerous 'Nate's' can be.

I was a fairly mature guy in my late twenties when my 'Nate' briefly came into my life.  I can't imagine how I handle him if he entered my life when I was 15 or 16 years old, especially if I didn't have a strong support system of family and friends.  I think many of us have had 'Nate's' in our lives, some briefly, some, for longer periods of time.  They one good thing about having endured one, is how keenly it teaches us to see one.  Today, I can spot a 'Nate' a mile away, and have learned how to keep them at a distance from the get go.

So as hated as the character of Nate may be, I still find him fascinating to watch, especially in the capable hands of Jacob Elordi.  Given how much I wrote about Nate, I thought it would help mentally separate actor from character by featuring a few images from a couple of Jacob's other projects.

Zendaya (Rue)

'I just showed up without a map or a compass, and at some point, you have to make a choice ... about who you are and what you want. And therein lies the catch.'
Rue Bennett

I was away last weekend, so haven't had time yet to watch the season finale, but still wanted to give a Standing O to HBO's Euphoria.  The American teen drama television series was created by Sam Levinson and I was surprised to read it was based on an Israeli miniseries of the same name. ( אופוריה‎)

I wasn't surprised it was based on another show, but I haven't generally thought of Israel as a country known for boundary pushing teen drams.  I'll have to give the original a look!  I thought HBO did an incredible job of promoting the show, in part, but using society's perplexity with the penis.

Hunter Schafer (Jules)

Weeks before it's June premiere, there were story about the scene with all the penis's.  Given the penis is so taboo in American society, a show promoting penis-a-plenty was going to get attention.  It got mine.  I DVR'd the first two episodes, but honesty, just fast forwarded to Eric Dane and the nudity in those first two shows.  At first glance, the show seemed so dark and depressing, my initial feelings were it wasn't for me.

Then came those penis's, so many of them.  What was interesting to me was how important those appendages were to the story.  After watching the scene, and making a few caps for the blog, the penis's became secondary to their purpose in the story.  As I re-watched the scene, I was drawn to the story, and how those all those naked jocks in the locker room were so important in the unveiling of the character of Nate.  Let's be honest, most on screen nudity is in part, gratuitous, but Euphoria's penis scene, not only grabbed a lot of attention, it also actually incredibly pivotal to story.

Barbie Ferreira (Kat)

I especially love how brilliantly the show's writers focus on character.  There are so many brilliant and unique characters in the show, all fascinating and beautifully portrayed.  The show gets a lot of praise for being realistic, and in part I agree.  Yes, the characters shown are realistic, but they don't necessarily represent the typical American high school student.  A slice, of course, so were Dawson and Pacey, Rory Gilmoore and the crew from The OC

Algee Smith (Chris)

They all represented specific students at specific times.  I think what's so incredible about Euphoria, isn't how real the characters are, but how rare it is find this particular slice on television.  We sometimes see them in in films and documentaries, but not on a TV show with time to really dive into their stories.  One of the most interesting characters to me is Nate, I talk a bit about why in the post below.

Sewn for his Shape: Clinton by PhotoRSH

'Clinton has a body he's worked hard to build, and it's as if the clothing was sewn for his shape.'

Over the past few months, I done a couple of pieces featuring the work of PhotoRSH. Both of those pieces however, were theme pieces. The first, focused on Temptation Island's Tyler Berta, (Checking In) the second, a July 4th piece featuring several models in front of the red, white and blue. (Bold Stripes/Bright Stars/Brave Hearts)  Today, the visual focus is Clinton, but the spotlight, is aimed at the artist behind the lens.

I first noticed Ross' (PhotoRSH) work awhile ago, and especially loved his use of lighting, bold color and pose and the dynamic and striking way that he was he captures the male form.  I often say that the focus of FH is the male form, but not every shoot that I feature, keeps form, the entire form in focus.  Many photographers focus more on body, and specific body parts, but Ross beautifully covers, and uncovers, the entirety of the incredible male form.

Although Ross shoots a variety of different themes, nude, erotic, fine art, editorial and fashion, fitness models are definitely one of his specialities. With a focus on fitness, it's even more important to not only admire, but respect the bodies incredible strength and power.  It's also equally important to document how all those hours in the gym create a body that looks incredible both in and out of clothes. That's why I thought Physique Builder Clinton was a great choice to illustrate Ross' work.  Naked is of course always great, but as you can clearly see from Ross' shots of Clinton, muscles, lines and curves are often highlighted even more beautifully, with the addition of a great pair of underwear, a jockstrap, or a sheer pair of work out pants.

Although his road to photography officially began in college, Ross shares that it was the summer after his high school graduation that he first used a digital point and shoot camera.  With no formal training, Ross experimented with his new toy, trying different settings learning how far he could go and what was possible. Although he shares most of those images were not worth a second look, a passion was aroused.

Ross had initially chosen Athletic Training as his field of study, but after experiencing some problems early on with the department, he got scared of his choice and got out.  Ross went on to choose photography, hoping it would be both a fun, as well as an 'easy' art degree to pursue.  It turned out, Ross' assumption wasn't exactly on point, and he struggled, actually failing his first portfolio review.  Ross pushed through however, and graduated with his BFA in Photography with a minor degree in  Photojournalism.

'My focus on the male form as a theme in my photography was born out of my religious small town upbringing, and being in the closet up through parts of college. I started experimenting with photographing nude men from the "Life Drawing" classes I took, offering the models almost as much as the class itself. '

'I started photographing the nude male form partially in voyeurism but mostly in learning how light formed shapes with the body, and the different shapes on different bodies. Since I actually started after starting the Life Drawing class, the model themselves were pretty comfy and more often than not taught me how they should be posed for the best angles with lighting.'

'Working with some confident models while I was not confident at all with a camera was a great teaching tool. I learned about the technical challenges and how to pose models to be flattering without having awkward angles. While none of my actual photo classes used the male form in an assignment, it was something I loved to try and learn from with portraiture. My appreciation for the form, and slight obsession with learning the technical side of lighting drove me to continue focusing on underwear and the nude form after college. I was very fortunate to connect with some underwear companies early on, and still have a couple very strong ties with companies to showcase their garments.'

Ross connected with Clinton through his modeling with another photographer-friend in Chicago.  The other photographer had worked with Clinton first and Ross admired the images and set about to contact him about working together.  Do his connections, Ross had the perfect underwear garments for Clinton to show off, colorful N2N's from UnderwearNewsBriefs and a jockstrap from SuperGayUndies.

'Setting up and working with Clinton was a great experience. He was planning to be in Chicago on a certain weekend and I had a free day at the same time. In chatting with him he explained he was very open to showing off in just about anything, and even without!  The underwear fit him perfectly of course, he has a body he's worked hard to build, and it's as if the clothing was sewn for his shape.'

Blast From The Past: Ken Olin

'Holy shit.
I’m a senior citizen!'

Nothing makes you feel older than when a hunk you grew up salivating over, announces on Twitter that he's now a senor citizen...   That's exactly what happened when I read  Ken Olin's July 30th tweet commemorating his 65th birthday.  Although known to most for his role on Thirtysomething, these days, Olin keeps busy as an executive producer for This Is Us, and also served as EP for two of my all time favorite shows, Alias and Brothers & Sisters.

Although I've seen a few episodes of Thirtysomething, it wasn't a show I watched during it's original run.  I was about 11 or 12 when the show aired on ABC and it seemed a little too adult (ie boring..) the few times that I saw it.  My introduction to Ken actually came a year or two earlier...

Falcon Crest 1985

My parents were big fans of Dallas, and Friday night in our house was always Dallas night.  I loved to watch the show with my parents, more to watch them than the show itself.  I think Dallas was the only show they actually sat down and watched together.  For a time in the eighties, Dallas was followed by another Prime Time Soap, Falcon Crest.  Usually before the second soap started, my father left the rec room, and I was sent to bed.  Occasionally however, mom was too tired to fight with me, and stayed up, sometimes catching a bit of Jane Wyman drama.

I have a very vivid memory of a scene on the show and seeing a hot hairy chested man diving naked into a lake. The scene wasn't that long, and at the time didn't know who the actor was.  We didn't own a VCR yet, and back then, the showed aired just one time.  The scene remained one of those 'memories', incredibly vivid but yet not complete.

It was years later that I discovered the skinny dipping hunk was Ken Olin, who briefly played Father Christopher on the CBS soap.  When I finally got the net, I was able to find a clip of the scene to revisit that childhood memory.   When I first saw the scene, it was incredibly hot to me, but re-watching, it didn't exactly live up to what I had remembered.  It was CBS, so you weren't going to see much, but it still holds one of those erotic milestones in my sexual awakening

Thirtysomething (1987)

Queen's Logic (1991)

In addition to Ken's brief swim on Falcon Crest, I think his only other nude scene was in 1991's Queen's Logic.  Before anyone gets too excited, the scene shows about as much as his previous one, and is equally as fleeting. Ken, along with co-stars Tony Spiridakis, Joe Mantegna, John Malkovich and Kevin Bacon run to their car after having their clothing stolen while skinning dipping.  I'm not sure exactly which darkened buttocks is Olin's, but I'm sure someone can figure it out with a close study.

Environmental Blend: Mickey by Implicit Ditto

'What I really find interesting is the blend of the environment and the model to really create a mood.'

It was that specific mood that Mike (Implicit Ditto) describes that first drew me to his imagery. I first noticed Mike's work on Model Mayhem awhile ago and knew I wanted to feature his work.  Last year, while profiling model and photographer Tristan Woods, I noticed some fantastic shots of Tristan on Mike's Instagram and knew it was time to reach out.

Mike studied photography in college, but like myself and other would-be artists, time and money issues pushed him towards pursuing a safer profession.  For Mike, that was a carer in the tec sector.  Once digital cameras began to take hold, and became more affordable, Mike picked it back up and says he hasn't looked back since.  With his tec experience, Mike's attuned to changes in technology, and has been fascinated watching how photography and technology continues to blend together and compliment each other.

'I started focusing on the male form in the early 00’s as I decided it made sense to start photographing what it was I was spending so much time looking at.'

'My own personal aesthetic is to try and blend the surroundings in with the model as much as possible. I don’t do well with studio work for that reason. What I really find interesting is the blend of the environment and the model to really create a mood. For example, a person on a beach creates a mood, or in an industrial complex, in the forest, an abandoned house, etc. I just love bringing all of these elements together and seeing what’s possible. While some photographers are amazing in the studio, it’s just more of a challenge for me. But, that could change.'

Mike connected with Mickey through a modeling site, and Mike was among the first photographers that Mickey shot with.  Mike could see from his prior work that he was comfortable with his body and looked to find a space with both privacy, and not constrained by being in a public location.  This set of images come from their second shoot together, the first was shot at a private residence, these were taken on on the secluded property of one of Mike's friends.

'Mickey is fantastic to work with, in fact, I have to work to keep up with him. Mickey is so athletic and fluid in his movements, he’ll just seamlessly (and quickly) transition from one pose to the next. I often have to catch him and tell him to stop and move back a few poses so I can re-shoot something. He’s also one of the most polite and enthusiastic people I’ve ever met. He’s genuinely grateful for the opportunity and experience and I think that comes through in all of his photos.'

I love the way Mickey blends into, and interacts with his environment in this location shoot.  The blend is beautifully quiet and subtle in tone and mood.  There are no jarring moments, movements or colors, even the pinks and blue's Mike captured seem to flow with Mickey's beautiful skin tone and the surrounding greens.
