The Kalology of Kenny

No sooner had I posted my piece featuring male model Kenny from Big Brother Canada when a blog reader messaged me a video link for competition going on in the house. Still in the BB closet Kenny was assisting his bestie in the house Andrew with making a video to win a special power. It doesn't take much to get Kenny in his undies, but still not sure what sparked Andrew to dress up like a kitty. I will try not to overload you all with Kenny posts, he is becoming increasingly judgy in the house, but his relationship with Andrew is really quite interesting to watch.

Sheer: Austin WIld by Gordon Nebeker

Model Austin Wild is certain not Irish, his father is Spanish and his mother Cuban. And no, there isn't any green within this set of images, just beautiful skin, set against glorious black and sheer white. But given St. Patrick's day is sort of an enchanted time, a day to begin transforming winter's dreams into summer's magic, it seemed the perfect time to follow-up last week's post featuring photographer Gordon Nebeker's work the enchanting Mr. Wild.

'I like to spend some time in my initial shoot with a model working with the long white cloth that I often use. It gives me a chance to see how creative they are and it gives them a prop to use while they are nude which seems to make them feel more comfortable. Austin took to the white cloth like a duck to water and moved it in very creative ways.'

The Visual Variance: James Alejandro by Karl Royce

'The models in Karl's images appear unbounded, as if the limits of movement, space and gravity do not exist. Some of the men appeared in mid air, others grounded, but lightly so as if floating near, but planted on the ground.'

I pulled the quote above from my February story The Chair, which featured the work of London photographer Karl Royce. When constructing the piece, one of the shoots Karl had sent on featured 23 year old model James Alejandro. I loved the images, but given they didn't as closely fit the theme I was going for, I decided to set Karl's work with James aside to post on their own.

Although there is a bit of a feel of floating in the clouds, for this shoot, Karl planted James gently, but firmly on the bed. What most struck me when viewing this shoot were the visual variants that blended so well together to create erotic and starkly beautiful final images. Although James is six feet tall, the bed was large enough both embrace, and display his form so beautifully. I also loved the contrast between James dark features against the white, with the small color flash of the red from the jock strap jumping out at you. James hair, both on his head, and body especially on his legs took on great importance visually with the white, and the poses Karl chose to capture.

'It was a pleasure to work with Karl! He made it incredibly easy to work with him and I love that he understands the naked form and views it as a thing of beauty!'

'I wanted to work with James initially, for not just his obvious good looks and natural body hair, but for that amazing shaped mouth; he has the most beautiful shaped lips. He's very easy to work with so will be a model I'll definitely be booking again and just focusing on his raw masculinity. I chose to shoot him on the bed was mainly because on the day there was this golden light coming through that particular window and as the concept was meant to be "dreamscape" inspired. It seemed the obvious choice.'

Under A Rock

On The Flintstones, Rock Quarry was sick of Hollyrock and longed for a normal life like the other citizens of Bedrock. I think it was through this old episode of the famous cartoon, that I first became aware of who Rock Hudson was. Everytime I see Rock's name I think I should write something about him. The only mention of Rock in the 7 years of FH was connected to a post on his one time co-star Jack Scalia. Last week, I again saw his name, this time for Come September, a 1961 featured on TCM's tribute to actress Gina Lollobrigida. (Whose name was also used on The Flintstones for the maid Lollobrickida} I didn't see the movie, forgot to DVR, but was again reminded Rock deserved a mention, and a place on the site.

I was about 9 when I really found out who Rock Hudson was. I didn't watch Dynasty at the time, but I was enough of a pop culture nut to be more than a bit interested in the above issue of US magazine with the HOLLYWOOD FACES AIDS headline. I became even more interested in the actor as I got older and spent some time researching his career and closeted life. Without intending to, Rock Hudson arguably did more to raise the public's awareness of Aids than any other celebrity. There is always great debate about the outing of public figures. How much privacy does a celebrity have a right to expect? I always lean towards supporting a persons right to choose what they will or will not share. Disclosure about any aspect of our lives should be our choice, and force, no matter how positively intended, is just that, force. I feel this way about any and every issue, one's sexuality being just part of a very long list.

In the middle eighties, Rock Hudson most likely would have never gotten the role on Dynasty if he was out of the closet. I cannot imagine the fear and exhaustion Rock must have felt, working for all those years as hard at keeping his secret, as the many roles that he played. Looking back, there is something almost beautiful, tragic of course, but beautiful, that Rock's coming out through death, had such an impact, and powerful change on the face of aids and real beginning of the public discussion. I have still yet to watch a Rock Hudson movie, so if anyone has any suggestions of movies to begin my journey into his work, leave a comment, or shoot me a line.

Meanwhile, Back in the House...

The men of Big Brother Canada continue to provide memorable moments. There have already been a few images, pre-beard of Kenny posted on the net, but the image above is a nice one. Meanwhile in the house, Jon (below) begins his pulling and stretching, always a good idea before starting to exercise.

Arlie (above and below) has officially grown on me. The house clown yes, but in addition to his love of running around the house naked he also has nice eyes, such a great smile, and beautiful lips. I just hope he soon finds out what direction he is going to go with his head and body hair.

You can check out more of the Men of Big Brother Canada on Youtube HERE:

In other Big Brother news, (old news to many) BarbwireX posted these recent shots of BB Australia's Jamie. Jamie remains a favorite for many and thankfully still seems to enjoy being naked for the enjoyment of others. See my previous Jamie post HERE:

Incredible Grace: Cary By Tin Box Photography

Grace:Simple elegance or refinement of movement

I was first introduced to model Cary Farrow while working on a piece, Darling Nicky, in 2012. I have been following Cary's work since, hoping to feature more. I love how natural and beautifully his movement and poses are and especially loved the emotion in his poses with the armless and plastic 'Nicky'.

Fortunately, when I contacted Dennis Tin Box Photography about featuring more of his images, it was his work with Cary he suggested we spotlight. When describing Cary, I loved that Dennis used 'incredible grace' to describe Cary's movements during the shoot. Grace is a beautiful word and one not used enough when describing male models. Grace is also something, that when the focus of an artist, can come through powerfully in images creating distinctly beautiful captures. You can often see in images from inexperienced or new photographers, when body parts are more important than the male form as a whole.

'I worked with Cary on several occasions and found him to be one of the kindest models I have ever worked with. He has a look about him that is to me intoxicating. On one of the shoots he had just made a bow tie all by himself and was so proud of it. He also had an incredible grace when he posed and when he was just relaxing while I set up the lights for the next pose he would start to sing.'

'I wanted to use an old chair that I had but didn't want him just to sit in it so I asked him to act as if the chair was his dance partner. Some beautiful shots came from this as well. I hope I can work with him again. He is simply amazing.'

'Blondes are noticed but redheads are never forgotten.'

There is a reason our years as a teenager have such an impact on our lives and our souls. So much of what plays out in our adulthood stems back to those transitional years between the innocence of childhood, the sexual awakening of puberty, and onslaught of becoming an young adult. Experiences during this time affect how we act, and react for decades to to come. When I think about it, almost every view I have, passion I hold and struggle I cope with, can be directly tied to a moment when I was a teenager.

My own teenage years spanned from the late eighties through the mid nineties. If you were not straight, it could be a risky and dangerous time to explore your sexuality. The risk was not about physical harm, it was emotional more about social ostracization and being totally alone. Today, we celebrate differences, then, it felt like the worst thing in the world you could be, was yourself. Straight guys could check out girls opening, and with rousing peer support. We, had to be more careful.

In the neighbourhood I grew up in, there were lots of kids my age. Around the corner from my house was a cul-de-sac. At the end was a bike path that took you to the lake. That path became my reason (excuse) to cruise through the cul-de-sac on my bike. There was a large family who lived at the entrance the circle. There were about seven brothers and two sisters who made up the clan. Because of their size, the cul-de-sac became their playground, bike riding, street hockey and basketball were staples in the paved circle. Colin was the one of the middle sons, just a couple of years older than I. Colin was the one redhead among his otherwise mostly blonde and light brown sibling group. He is also the only one of the nine kids that I actually really remember.

Colin was straight, but accepting of everyone, friendly, and usually with a smile on his face. We were not friends but he always waved and said hello. If there was a game going on, he was playing and thankfully for me, usually shirtless. I found tons of reasons to drive through the path to the lake when Colin was outside. I was captivated by his pale skin, skinny legs and the way his skin color and coloring sparkled in the summer sun. His freckles dove me crazy and his nipples, set against his white chest was my favorite place to 'sneak glance' as I whizzed by on my mountain bike.

There were of course other guys who peaked my sexual awakening, but I think Colin is one of the most memorable. I think Colin is solely responsible for my continued love of redheads, one I have explored many times on FH, including my 2010 post, Seeing Red. When I find a great shots of a good looking model, I get excited to put together a feature to share on the blog. When I find great shots of good looking redhead model, it becomes something special, something that takes me back to the cul-de-sac.

'Models like Liam just don't come along every day! Try once every ten years.'

When I was profiling photographer Tom Silk's work with Sean this past February, (Living The Life) he was in the process of shooting, and sharing his work with Liam. Liam is pretty much the spitting image of a slightly older Colin including his hairstyle, nose, lips and grin. Tom's images of Liam transported me beautifully back to those spring and summer days on my bike. Liam's personality so strongly comes across in Tom's images, in particular with his facial expressions, especially in one of my favorite images below. Liam didn't always think of himself as good looking but over time has come to appreciate his looks, He remains humble however, but has gained confidence in himself and more self assurance when it comes to looking for the right woman. I am not sure if all lovers of the red and russet have a Colin in their past, but we can all hope for a little Liam in our future.

In His Hands: Henry Cavill by Valley Of The Dolls

It is the job of a good artist to bring out the best in their subjects. In the hands of a passionate photographer, their skill, great lighting, makeup and fashion and of course post are all used to accomplish this goal. For Valley Of The Dolls, the tools to bring out the best in his subjects also include; paint, varnish, putty and clay and a sculpting tool.

I have covered Henry Cavill and his body of work several times over the years. Even before being cast as The Man Of Steel, Cavill had a classic, almost iconic look that seem destined to be captured on the big screen. If you purchased Cavill's Superman action figure you own a doll that came dressed as he looks in the two images above. In Superman's classic blue and red suit, ready for action!

Although I have seen many images of Cavill over the years, I am not sure he has ever looked as hot as he does in plastic, captured by Phil from Valley Of The Dolls. Phil's process to transform action figure to model is a time consuming and tedious one, (which you can see HERE:) but as the images below show, it is well worth it for the final effect!

'I started this as a hobby a few years ago and it has quickly evolved and taken on a life of its own. I am not a professional photographer or artist but there seems to be some level of appeal to my little creations.'

The appeal Phil mention is both powerful and instant. Through his preparation, staging and photography the viewer is visually mesmerized by both what they are seeing, and equally by what they are not. Male dolls have traditionally been created as eunuchs, safe, castrated men to accompany Barbie on her trips to the beach or the prom. The antithesis to Ken of course is Tom Of Finland, a man always at full alert with his one and only goal to have sex, ferociously and constantly.

Most men of course are neither all Ken, nor all Tom. We are all both savagely sexual or quietly impotent depending on circumstances and who surrounds us. I think that is part of the appeal of Phil's work. Henry, and the other subjects he has created and captured are just like most of the models and celebrities I write about. Representations of masculinity and desire, tweaking both the emotional and erotic sensibilities of the viewer, whether for artistic expression, or commercial reasons.
