Saturday Afternoon: Adam Marques by Keith Ingram

'Adam was my last photo shoot using 35mm film, as well as my first shoot using a digital SLR The black & white images were quite possibly the last rolls of b/w film I ever shot! Adam was so much fun to photograph. It's too bad that our paths never crossed again since that wonderful afternoon, but I guess that's why I do what I do - preserving those magic moments.'

'As I was going through my archives, cataloging my favorite images for my upcoming book project, i came across these great shots of model Adam Marques from a few years back. As I usually work with newbie models, it's always great to see when some of them move on to more high-profile commercial work. Such was the case with Adam, who, after moving to L.A. a few months after our shoot, quickly made a name for himself in the adult industry, working with some pretty well-known photographers and studios.'

When I first profiled photographer Keith Ingram last summer, the San Francisco artist described himself as a Weekend Warrior.  Never drawn to the high pressure and highly competitive world of commercial photography, Keith enjoys relaxing, laid back weekend afternoon shoots without creative restrictions and the time pressures of editorial deadlines.

Since that first piece featuring Keith's work with Tom, I have been wanting to share more of his work on FH.  After some communication back and forth about what shoot to feature, I was thrilled with Keith's final choice.  It was of course a weekend, a rainy Saturday afternoon in fact, when Keith met up with model Adam Marques to shoot the images featured here .

'Adam was really down-to-earth, mellow, and eager to get naked.'

Adam arrived at Keith's studio, dropped off by his family, straight from the airport.  Keith reports Adam relaxed from the get go and one of the few models he has worked with who preferred not to have music playing during the shoot. Adam was more than happy just to talk, joke around and be present in the moment. Adam's relaxed attitude helps make Keith's images beautifully natural and his magnificent blue eyes lure you, tempt you and draw you erotically in with their undeniable magnetic force.

'The first thing you notice about Adam when you meet him are those amazingly expressive eyes! He's got big blue saucer eyes, and classically handsome features that are a joy to photograph. He wasn't as gym-toned as he wanted to be for our shoot, and was a little self-conscious about it, but I didn't mind at all. His natural, "everyday guy" look fits my style of portraiture perfectly. I love these photos because they're candid and spontaneous. The lad knew how to pose, and he was in constant motion and full of ideas.'

Kudos to Andrew Garfield

I have always liked actor Andrew Garfield, but his recent media appearances have had me salivating for another look at the cape crusader in his blue and red tights in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I liked, but didn't love, Spider-Man 1. Watching Garfield however, along with co-star and girlfriend Emma Stone, the past few weeks on shows ranging from The Graham Norton Show through Saturday Night Live has done the trick.

Press tours don't usually have much effect on me, actors usually tow the company line, even with a dud, but Garfield's charms are undeniable, even more potent in person, than on the big screen. SNL is usually hit and miss for me, but Garfield's turn as host, in particular his Timberlake impression and his 'smooch' with Coldplay's Chris Martin were solid and enjoyable.

I never would have guessed an image featuring two old broads would have me excited. Although I am still mourning Matthew (I know time to move on) but with these two Downton divas in preview pics for Season 5, anticipation has begun!

Andrew

Last night marked the finale of the second season of Big Brother Canada. It has been a pretty great season eye candy wise, although Kenny left far too soon... Canadians are known for being nice and unlike on BBUS, the house guests on the Canadian version play hard, but generally don't go for the cruelty to the same level and degree. There was generally an I love you or an I'm sorry eh accompanying the knife's being stuck in others backs.

Above: A bit more of Trevor Boris, whose Marcia the Moose was far too scarce this season.

This may make for less drama, but the people behind the show make up for it by keeping those in the house busy with interesting tasks and challenges. I for one am tired of cruelty on tv. Good game play, backstabbing and insults are ok, but Evil Dick had me switching off my tv with his televised cruelty of some of the women in the house his season. Producers of the US version could learn a thing or two from their Northern counterpart on keeping the house guests on their toes. Although I am happy for Jon's win, there was a small part of me hoping Sabrina might pull of shocker. Alas, second will have to do for the one surviving memeber of the First 5. Here is a little look back on season 2 of Big Brother Canada.

'They left us lying in blood in the street'

As is often the case, my love of a photographers work most often begins with one image. Usually, when I pull together a feature on the blog, I use that one image as pic of the day. My thinking is, that the feeling or emotion that first hit me will also hit others and encourage them, as it did me, to explore more about the artist and their work. In the case of photographer, author and film maker Alexander Kargaltsev, placement of that initial image became sort of a dilemma.

The image was one of the most impactful images I had seen in awhile, from an artist clearly connected to the pain and torment expressed within. Born in Moscow, Kargaltsev has experienced the persecution first hand. Although now living in Brooklyn, after moving to the US after winning a scholarship to the New York Film Academy, described clashing with Moscow military police during a gay pride rally in the Russian capital. The image, which I ultimately decided to post as the final image in this feature, through proximity, framing and balance and especially for me pose, Kargaltsev created an image which perfectly embodied his theme. The models faces, one visible and one not, both equally express the depth emotions ranging from despair, support and ultimately hope.

'The models' nakedness is a powerful visual statement imbued with symbolism. They are not nude but naked, for they had courage to shed the many layers of fear and come out to the world uncovered, vulnerable, yet proud.'

Alexander Kargaltsev's photographic project 'Asylum' explores the lives of gay men who fled Russia and sought asylum in the United States on the grounds of their sexual orientation. Kargaltsev's exhibition of Asylum took place in the Autumn of 2012 at New York's 287 SPRING in Soho. Although I wish had been aware of the artist work then, Asylum has also been preserved in book form featuring a 56 page collection of the artists images. You can preview or order the book HERE:

Asylum of course has many meanings, several weaved powerfully with the visuals. Kargaltsev's subjects have obviously achieved reaching a place of refuge in the US, finally physically free from the restrictions previously placed on them. Emotional asylum however, does not always occur as easily, or as quickly, as a change of location. The emotional scars, of being persecuted and mistreated, as well a leaving behind family and friends are still visible on the faces of the men Kargaltsev visually captures.

Asylum is also a word used to describe the walls the lock in those deemed sick, abnormal, flawed or insane. The borders of Russia became these walls and what I love most about Kargaltsev's work is a sense of freedom, not because of where they are, but because of what they left. I think for many of us, if locked in a place where we couldn't be ourselves and were considered abnormal, sick or insane... the first thing we would once the walls came down, would be to strip down and becoming naked, literally and emotionally and allowing ourselves to be unprotected and vulnerable for the first time in our lives. After years of suppression, running naked towards the sun, outside, to parks and fields without walls, being with, and supported by, others with shared experiences would be like a rebirth. The start of healing, and a new way of living without the fear which once so tightly held you back.

From his Website:
Alexander Kargaltsev is an artist, writer, photographer, actor and film director. In this last capacity he won many prizes including his short movies, The Cell (2010) and The Well (2009), both made when the Moscow-born author held a scholarship at the All-Russian State University of Cinematography, the home of most of the greats of Russian film since Eisenstein and before. Despite the many academic distinctions Kargaltsev has won, his films do not breathe the air of scholarly fustiness. Rather, they speak an individual language of refined imagination, fantasy and beauty of form. Kargaltsev is already a mature artist with a mature voice and a consummate and assured technique, which can both astonish and move.

Photography has been a passion since his boyhood and he has built up a remarkable body of work since that time. He works in all photographic media, including with film, video and digital images, but he is especially fascinated with Polaroid. Initially, his work was based in Russia with his friends as models, with some of his finest work being stills from his movies. He has created a photo-record of himself since adolescence and he has produced a number of extraordinary series of images: naked in a forest glade, sipping from a pool of water; or as a teenager on the balcony of a dacha, eyeing obliquely like a young Bacchus a luxuriant basket of fruit. The element of fantasy is strong, teamed perhaps with austere, yet fantastic elements which verge almost on the masochistic: nude forms in the snow; weird groupings of toy robots; two semi-nude men standing in a chimney vent, an image recalling Samuel Beckett in some respects; various combinations of beautiful men and voluptuous ladies in verdant surrounding. Beautiful, controlled and highly memorable.

Fusion: Kaleb by YogaBear Studio

With each new visit to YogaBear Studio's substantial portfolio, there is always a new model, a new shoot which inspires me to contact David about another feature. On today's visit, it was not a new shoot, but one from 2007 that grabbed my attention. Although David's full body shots are extraordinary, images which capture his passion for both stillness and movement within pose and stance, it was his portraits of Kaleb which drew my attention and mesmerized my visual senses.

David's portraits were full of both emotion and volume. Kaleb's tousled mane, combined with his facial expressions beautifully pull in together many of the themes David explores within his imagery. What most impresses me in David's images is his ability to capture his subjects so at ease and relaxed. I am not sure if Kaleb arrived at the shoot completely comfortable removing all of his clothing and posing in front of the camera, but in David's hands, he looks at one with his surrounds, the camera no longer an inanimate image capturing device, but instead an extension of David, fusing together artist and subject.

'I worked with Kaleb during a trip to San Francisco--we headed up north to the Pt Reyes area and struggled to get good pics on a rainy day. Kaleb was a great sport and we got all those pictures in the forest setting, finding sheltered spots to shoot.'

'The indoor pics were done later in the day at the hotel room. I was forced to use my spare telephoto lens for most of the shots because my regular lens had gotten wet and started to fog up in the room. He is a free spirit and a talented yogi, which made for a interesting and inspiring session. I had another chance to work with him on some yoga pictures in 2012 when he was visiting San Diego.'

JM Rich: The guy pushing the lawn mower...

Regular readers of FH will understand why the image of model JM Rich (above from Fotorebelxt Photography) grabbed my attention. Images of the male form which include staircases and windows always hold a particular fascination for me. I have attempted to self analyse the reasons for this in many previous posts, but I think it comes down to the many possibilities, erotically and visually, which windows can shine light on.

After heading to Jeff's portfolio, I was impressed with the amount of shoots he has done with many of my favorite photographers. There was a clear joy felt within the Chicago's model imagery and a great feeling of explored creativity within many themes and locations.

2 images above from Pride Of Paradise

Jeff first got in to commercial modeling several years ago when someone needed a model to be the guy pushing the lawn mower in a TV and print ad. If he was going to model, he decided it might as well be him, never thinking he would one day have a photo of him pushing that mower half naked.

Image below: Marana Photography

'I've found, though, the creativity I've been able to explore with photographers doing figure and artistic work has opened up a whole new focus for me. Being able to tell stories or display different emotions sans clothing makes it all the more real. You use your entire body and want to be sure your eyes and facial expressions match the tension or tone of the rest of your body. What fun!'

Image below from Photos by Frank

'I've had a great time doing those over the years.. It's also fun to add a bit of a 'surprise' element to some photos - what might look to be a traditional shot or ordinary pose now has implied (or real) nudity thrown in. These come across as, hopefully, clever.'

Favorite New Face on Thursday Nights: Ditch Davey in The Black Box

$

I didn't expect much from ABC's new The Black Box, the premise seemed muddled and with all the shows being yanked the past few weeks, I was reluctant to invest in another drama, especially one so emotionally driven. My love for Vanessa Redgrave however, had me DVR the show and last week I finally watched the first three episodes. I love it. Although I almost stopped during the first half hour of the pilot, (too many dreams and misleading scenes) the show settled in with focused narrative and I became engrossed with life of Dr. Catherine Black. I had never heard of Kelly Reilly before, but her portrayal of the bi-polar, and emotionally broken Catherine is both fascinating, annoying as well as highly watchable and an acting tour de force for the shows lead actress.

Above: Ditch and The Black Box co-stars Kelly Reilly and David Ajala

Also making the hour speed by is the incredibly sexy face, and body, of actor Ditch Davey. The Australian born Davey was originally named Kristian Lind, but legally changed his name to Ditch at 18. Turns on Australian shows Blue Heelers and Sea Patrol led Davey to his most well known as Nemetes on Spartacus: War of the Damned.

Below: Ditch and his beautiful wife Sophia

I am not hopeful ABC will stick with The Black Box, the pilot's ratings were so so in its Scandal time slot, and have dropped with it's subsequent episodes. I would still encourage you to check it out, the show is only 3 shows in for it's 13 episode season so there is still time for viewers to find it. The shows complicated characters however may make it off putting and maybe 13 hours is enough to tell the story. 13 was certainly was the case with Under The Dome which is being dragged out for a second season. At least check out it for Mr. Davey who I predict will land on his feet nicely after his exposure on the show.

Oh Thierry, our love
Holds on, holds on

I know these images of model and actor Thierry Pepin are not new, but when I saw the shoot from Andres Velasco for Undergear, I wanted to share on FH. I first profiled the Montreal model back in 2009 in my Favorite Import section and have been following his career both as a model, and an actor since. Six years after that original post, Thierry is looking hotter than ever, wearing the smallest amount of material that one can, without being completely naked.

Martin J Barker Designs: Easy Like Sunday Morning

Of the hundreds of models I have profiled and interviewed over the years, only a small number articulate being completely comfortable naked in front of the camera. Some are natural exhibitionist, many have been nude modeling for years for for photographers, painters and groups of students or artists. Many are naturalists, often with a strong sense of self without the hang ups society inflicts on so many of us. Most models who take it all off for art, or cash, came to that decision with a lot of questions, trepidation and more than a few nerves. Families and partners have to be considered as well as future possible job prospects.

Above: Zeus

One of the main reasons in fact that models have gotten in touch with me about removing an image has not been out any sort of embarrassment, but because of an upcoming job or pressure from a significant other. These questions and concerns are of course smart. It is one thing to be comfortable posing naked for an artist. It is another to then see their naked images catapulted all over the Internet and jettisoned into the hands of commentators who tear apart everything about them starting usually of course, with the size of their package. You can often see the nerves, the tenseness, on the faces of models not completely comfortable with their decision. Sometimes this can work to give an image an edge, a vulnerability which enhances the viewers enjoyment. More often than not however these nerves, if not handled skillfully but a professional artist, can suck any erotic enjoyment from the viewing audience.

For me however, FH is as much about story as it is about image. I am just as, or maybe even more so, curious about how an image came to life and what factors played into the models decision to pose, and the artist's decision to take and then release, a particular image. When I came upon the Model Mayhem portfolio for Martin J Barker Designs, there was an explicit feeling of ease that beautifully permeated from so many of Martin's images. I have no idea if the models Martin shot were totally comfortable being naked in front of his lens, but through pose, lighting and design, there was an organic, natural feeling. It was if we dropped in and silently observed each of them, relaxing and taking it easy, as they soak up the sun on beautifully quiet Sunday morning.

Paul

'I spend a long time supporting my models to feel relaxed. I may pose a model then spend several minutes getting them to relax from their head to their toes by having them feel as if their body is melting into the floor/chair/table.'

Martin says he works in a relaxed and comfy studio in both Loughborough & Northampton and believe strongly, that a comfy, relaxed model makes for excellent pictures. Martin also usually works in shorts, maybe a small thing, but he says can often help the balance between someone fully dressed shooting someone completely naked. Martin says having a model feel relaxed and trusting in the process is important whether working with a new model, one eager to please and take direction as well as with a more experienced model. Sometimes the experienced models have been shot naked by many photographers and depending on whether these experiences have been positive, can play a role in how much they put into the shoots. Some, may have shot very erotic, adult images and are looking to tone it down a bit to enter the world of more mainstream modeling. For them, the relaxation process may require them pulling it in a bit and not putting as much out front as they may have in the past.

Abort

Despite loving actress Zoe Saldana and disliking Mia Farrow as an actress, I ceased and aborted my viewing of Sunday's remake of Rosemary's Baby after about 20 minutes. Patrick J. Adams may be cuter than John Cassavetes but from the second the first part of the mini series began, there was a distinct lack of the creep factor that so permeated the original. The ratings reflected the lack of suspense, and the lack of Ruth Roman, and I suspect part 2 will not fare any better.
