Just Because: Julian Rhind-Tutt

Just because, every time I see that Notting Hill is on television, I mean to research and do a post on English actor Julian Rhind-Tutt.  I think I've seen the first forth of the film five or six times.  Only once did I make it to the end.  It's got a some great scenes, but they don't for me, sustain through to the happy sappy ending.

One scene I always perk up for is the scene in which Hugh Grant pretends to be a journalist for Horse & Hound magazine when meeting up with actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) at a press event.  Sliding into the scene with Hugh is a journalist from time out magazine who always grabs my attention.  As adorable as Grant is in the film, and as 'Floppy' as his hair, actor Julian Rhind-Tutt gives him a run for the money in the floppy hair department.  Bonus points for it's color!

Born in the historic town of Middlesex England, Rhind-Tutt is well known the UK for his roles on stage and in films including Bridget Jones Baby, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Les Misérables, The Saint, and the upcoming screen version of the play Blithe Spirit.  On television, the actor has appeared in shows including Green Wing, A Touch of Cloth, The Witcher, Merlin, and Britannia.  The actor's also been seen in films

Rhind-Tutt's role in Notting Hill wasn't his only role which grabbed my attention.  I didn't know it until putting together this piece, but he also appeared as Taylor, one of Saffy's friends in Donkey, a 2001 episode in the fourth series of Absolutely Fabulous.  I remember being drawn to his long, auburn, and definitely floppy hair, when I saw the episode for the first time.

Absolutely Fabulous (2001)

Rhind-Tutt's nudity on screen has been minimal, and no real nudity that I could find.  He did briefly flash his butt in two episodes of Britannia, (below) but the scenes are not exactly sexual in nature...

'I was more worried about winning the race. My pants went just after the start and there was nothing I could do.'
Blake Shinn

'Riding Miss Royale, Shinn suffered an unfortunate trouser malfunction just after the start of the first race at Canterbury but managed to keep things together until the race got serious in the final stages and he was in contention. Throwing everything at his mount to try to catch the leader, Defender, Shinn finished second with his pants around his knees, to the amusement of fans at the track and watching on TV.

Appropriately-named Modesty finished third behind Shinn and the happiest jockey after the race was Tommy Berry on the winner: “What a great race to win. It meant I was the only one that didn’t have to stare at Blake’s aas the whole way up the straight.'

90 minutes: Michael by Stephan Tobias

'We kept playing around and discovering new opportunities.'

Given my passion for male focused imagery, I consider the male form a work of art.  Over the years, I've featured male models in poses replicating famous art pieces, and posing with art pieces.  For this shoot, photographer Stephan Tobias surrounded his subject with art, paintings, sculptures and an array of colors and textures, contrasting with his smooth skin and muscular body.

Although at first glance, it may appear the beautiful Michael is posing in a museum, the setting is actually an opulent apartment in Berlin.  The apartment belongs to a friend of Stephan's who generally opened up his space for the shoot. Although he lives in Washington DC, Michael was visiting Berlin last year, and a short window of opportunity opened for a shoot with Stephan.

FH readers are aware of Stephan's work as both a model and a photographer.  I've always been impressed with Stephan's eye for beauty and especially his knack for pushing boundaries in his work, especially with spaces..  Stephan has an acute feel for connecting, both physically and emotionally, with the spaces he work in.  Stephan beautifully carried on this theme in this series with Michael.

'As a photographer and as a model, passionate for the male nude, I am always eager to find interesting shooting opportunities. When I see one, I am happy if I can just go for it. I love to discover and to be spontaneous. A moment of inspiration may never come back.'

'Michael has a really nicely proportioned and well trained body, but also expressions which speak of struggles and vulnerability. It was a pleasure for me to explore that a bit and to put it in context with that beautiful apartment space around him. Don't we always need that space around us to define ourselves and to find out who we really are?'

'This apartment offered numerous decorative props too, like the pallette which had belonged to my friend's grandfather, who was a well known painter. Such items can easily be used for pictures which have what I call "obscure symbolism". A pallette resembles a fig leave, but also can stand for the color which has been bestowed on us and which keeps influencing us, throughout our lives.'

'A glass table and framed pictures in the right light and angle can offer beautiful reflections. Capturing those may raise other visual questions, like what we really are and what we could become if seen from a different angle. Obscure symbolism can be found in many ways and often it becomes part of my photographic explorations subconsciously. The disappearing  daylight forced us to terminate our creative collaboration after a short, but productive, 90 minutes.'

Sons of Sissy

'These men learn to laugh about themselves and the traditions they are expected to uphold, and the work traces their efforts to recreate themselves as free individuals.'

Of course four hot guys performing naked would always grab my attention, but it was also their name that had me we wanting to learn more about Sons of Sissy. Sissy is usually used as an insult, a word to describe a gentle man, one who doesn't conform to the conventional view of masculinity.  Sons of Sissy strives to challenge and this definition and stereotype and the way society looks at masculinity.

Created by Austrian musician, performer, and choreographer Simon Mayer, the Sons of Sissy do everything they can to live up to their name.  They conduct themselves as part weird folk-music quartet, part experimentally playful ritual dance combo, using humor to radically disrupt the hackneyed male role models in old traditions.

'If you are offended by nudity on stage, this is not for you – the dancers are naked for a significant portion of the piece, although nothing indecent occurs! The nudity makes the performers appear more vulnerable than ever, as they strip away their male bravado, their masculine shields.'

Tea Party: Simon by Male Beauty by bengie

'Day will break and you'll awake and start to bake
A sugar cake for me to take for all the boys to see.'

When piecing together this series of images, I kept going back to Big Edie.  Why Big Edie you ask, and what possible connection does she have with delectable Simon King?  Well none really, but Tea For Two is really the only 'tea' related song that I know, and Big Edie's version in the Grey Gardens documentary has to be one of the most memorable versions of the classic song.

In the song, it's tea for two, but in this set from Male Beauty by bengie, poor Simon seems to be drinking his hot beverage all by himself.  I'm not sure if Simon sent out any invitations, but I'm guessing if he did, Simon would have had a slew of teetotalers RSVPing to sip his drink and nibble on his lady finger at his naked patio Tea Party.

R.I.P Mr. Saxon

I always meant to do a 'Blast From The Past' post on actor John Saxon, but like so many story idea's for the site, I hadn't yet got around to it.  It's always funny when a celebrity dies, what roles the press uses to connect them with.  Most press accounts I read this morning are mentioning his movies, Enter the Dragon, and Saxon's roles in the Nightmare on Elm Street Series.  Although Saxon made many films, it was television where he made his biggest mark.

Saxon's biggest roles were mostly in film and on television in the sixties and seventies. I first saw Saxon on TV when I was a kid on shows from the eighties and nineties.  I remember seeing him on episodes of Murder She Wrote, Melrose Place and Falcon Crest.  He would have been in his late 50's and early 60's during this time, but his sex appeal was still incredibly strong.  It was in his look, his walk, his eyes and voice.  Time to see if I can find some of his earlier film and television appearances! .  R.I.P John Saxon!

Male Beauty by bengie: The Return of the King

Since beginning the site thirteen years ago, I've featured hundreds of photographers and male models.  FH readers know I love going back and re-visiting the work of my favorite artists and models, looking to see if they have new work, and catching up with what they're doing today.

Sadly, often when I head back to a photographers website, or a model's on-line portfolio, I find it's been deleted.  Like so many career paths, especially it seems, with the creative arts, careers can be transitory.  For photographers, it's often a question of time and money.  Very few of the artist's that I feature count on their photography as their sole means of income. Their work is their hobby, their passion and the creative outlet we all need, and should have in our lives.

There are often windows  of time that allow us to focus more time on our passions.  I've been fortunate to have featured many artists while that window was open.  Sometimes, the window closes for a short time, but opens again.  This can also be the case with models.

Many believe a model's window is about their age.  but I believe even more so, it's more about our obsession with wanting to always see something new.   A new face, a, new body, a new way of uniquely capturing the male form.  Despite our desire for constant visual freshness, there are many artists and models who fracture the norm, with their look, their work, and their ability to bob and weave with an impatient and often fickle audience.

For me, Simon Kingis definitely one of those models. Whenever I see a new Simon shoot, I'm always excited to check it out.  It was almost a decade ago when Simon began his modeling career, and it didn't take long for him to become a favorite of both photographers, and lovers of imagery of the male form.

Early in the 2010's, Simon quickly became one of the most popular nude models on-line.  Simon had an extremely busy 2011 and 2012 working with some of my favorite, and some of the best UK  based photographers. Andrew Bowman, Mark Leighton, ShotbyGrant, Gert Kist, Gilles Crofta and Dylan Rosser all worked with Simon, and featured his images in their ports.   I was fortunate to be able to share many of Simon's images, and first featured him and his work with Suntown Photography back in 2012. (The Secluded Garden)

Simon has an incredible physique for sure, fit, and well (very well...) proportioned.  Beyond his body however, it's his face and his brown eyes that continue to draw me in.  Simon's face is both youthful and boyish and intelligent and mature.  His eyes can be both sultry and steely, but always sexy, especially when looking directly at the camera.

Simon also never seemed shy about nudity, and knew his audience and how to use his body through attitude and pose to hit the viewers precisely where it mattered.  One of the things that also impressed me about Simon, was that he seemed keenly aware of the fickleness of many fans of the male form.  After his initial success, Simon took a break from modeling for a few years, leaving viewers longing to see more.  When he returned, he jumped right back in, better than ever,

As hot as Simon looked wearing absolutely nothing, he also looked great dressed, and knew exactly how to wear, an un-wear a piece of clothing.  When I first saw that male Beauty by bengie had worked with Simon, I was most impacted by how hot Simon looked in, and falling out of his ripped jean shorts.  They seem tailored made specifically to highlight Simon's body and his visually impressive assets. FH viewers know I have an affinity for bengie's French porch doors, especially when they're behind, and assisting highlighting such incredible models like Simon King. Ken Olandt in A Time to Revenge

'A modern day version of the old Western story of a big rancher buying up all the smaller ranches, doing whatever necessary to achieve this and a group of men willing to fight back.'

Last week, I paid homage to Carl Reiner, and his direction of 1987's Summer School. ( Thanks Carl Reiner).  Specifically, I highlighted the scene in the male strip club featuring the adorably hot Ken Olandt.  At the time of writing, I had thought Carl Reiner, gave audiences their only view of Ken and his fine behind.  I was wrong.

Thanks to a poster on DC, I learned that Ken had another butt baring scene, this time, without the g-string.  A decade later, in the 1997 Western drama, A Time to Revenge, Olandt played Will, and Will loved having sex in the barn, by the campfire, almost every location you'd expect a randy cowboy to whip his chaps off in.

Olandt was 29 when he played the high school stripper in Summer School, and he was close to 39 when he made A Time to Revenge.  I had really only seen and check out Olandt's appearances during the late 80's and enjoyed seeing him a little older and a little more rugged than he appeared during his time as a twenty-something 'teen idol'.

A Baker's Dozen: Austin Wild

'When I saw my first image of 21 Miami model Austin Wild I was struck with how strong and striking he photographs. Austin has an incredible body, but his face is the face of fantasy, dreams and great art.'

I first spotted images (including the two shots above) of model Austin Wild on his Model Mayhem portfolio back in 2013.  I got in touch right away, but after a few week without a response, figured he wasn't interested on being on the site.  A few days later, I got a short message thanking me for writing and inviting me to use any of his images that I liked..  The quote above is from my first piece featuring Austin's work in January of 2014. (Wild About Austin)

Remaining Images by Gordon Nebeker

I wasn't the only one captivated and intrigued by Austin's look.  After seeing my piece on FH, photographer Gordon Nebeker also checked out Austin's port, and after noticing he lived fairly close to home in Florida, Gordon contacted Austin about working together.   Gordon and Austin clicked immediately, and over the next several years, they worked together multiple times.  Gordon also graciously shared images from each of their shoots together.

'No question that Austin won the Genes Jackpot Lottery! He says his father is Spanish and his mother is Cuban and that is a very attractive and powerful combination.'

With Austin's striking features, and his beautiful brown eyes, his face, as I stated, was the perfect inspiration for creating great art and imagery.  Austin was a natural in front of the camera, and his long, lean body created incredibly elegant lines and poses.  Gordon knew exactly how to utilize Austin's skill and assets within their work together.  Gordon shot Austin sensually splayed across his furniture, in his signature fabric, and underwater work, as well as new and unique spaces and locations.

'After hearing that a close friend had rented a house in Mexico to celebrate his birthday, Gordon couldn't possibly let him celebrate alone. Then... after he saw some photos of the house, he told his friend that it was far too great a photographic backdrop to let pass by. Cue Gordon getting in touch with Austin.'

In late 2016, Gordon and Austin's most amazing collaboration occurred south of the border.   The trip to Mexico, and the blend of location, architecture and Austin produced over 14,000 image that I was able to feature over three posts in early 2017.  With so many incredible images of Austin, Gordon couldn't let so many go unseen and published a book, Oh Mexico chronicling the shoot and trip. A copy of the book sits proudly on a bookshelf in my bedroom.

Austin had a bright future ahead of him.  He had interest from agencies about fashion work, and his lust for adventure had him leaving Florida and moving to seek out other creative opportunities.  Sadly, some of you may have read my brief tribute to Austin early last year after Gordon informed me of his sudden death.  While all deaths are sad, there is added poignancy when young lives, with so much ahead of them, come to an abrupt, and tragically premature ending.

Despite his meeting all the criteria, I paused briefly about including Austin in this series, but after running it by Gordon, I decided to go ahead.  Gordon felt Austin would want to be included, and reminded me how proud of Austin was of work, and the visual's he'd created.  Austin is also such an important piece of the site's  history, and his work never failed to inspire me, and motivate me as I pieced his stories together.
