12 Days: Richard Harmon in The Wishing Tree

#2 Richard Harmon

I originally set my DVR to record The Wishing Tree thinking it would be Jason Gedrick who would join the 12 Days list, but my favorite performance came from an actor I have loved for awhile Richard Harmon. The Wishing Tree, a bit of a Christmas Dead Poet's Society (a bit of...) with Gedrick as an English Professor who, using a special Christmas Tree, helps some of students develop a sense of connection and family.

Richard plays one of the students who the tree helps connect him with his distant and cold mother. I have loved Richard since first discovering his work in the 2011 flick Judas Kiss. Richard is a great actor who always manages to inhabit each role he takes, and elevates the level of every project he is in, including The Wishing Tree, a 2012 Hallmark movie.

On television, some of you might know Richard from his roles on The Killing, The Secret Circle, Continuum, Caprica and as Richard Sylmore on A & E's Bates Motel.

Those Christmas lights light up the street
Down where the sea and city meet
May all your troubles soon be gone
Oh Christmas lights, keep shining on
Coldplay

In going through past Christmas themed posts in search of inspiration, photographers adorning models with mini lights emerged as a theme. Thankfully for us, in the about the mid-seventies, the mini light became popular, replacing all those old lights which were a fire hazard due to how hot they would become. We can thank the inventor of the mini light for these images, as without the invention, either these images would not have been taken, or all of the models pictured would have burn marks all over their bodies... ;)

'The weather was so miserable that the studio had called to offer him a chance to do it with a shirt, but Amell declined, in part because he had already undergone an hour's worth of makeup that day to affix the scars and prosthetics for "shirtless Oliver.'

I haven't really been watching Arrow this season, I watched and enjoyed the first season, but never really returned for the second. After seeing the top image above in TV Guide however, not to mention Stephen Amell's appearance on The Flash, I think I must make a return visit. Last week's episode, The Climb had Arrow shirtless on a mountain top fighting Ra's Al Ghul. Below, Amell shared during a Facebook chat, exactly why?

'It was windy and it was raining," Amell said. "And that's one of the reasons why my left pectoral twitched in one of the scenes. The fight in and of itself, I was fine, because we were fighting, but the whole lead-up, I was cold. Cold, cold, cold.'

Stephan Tobias: Opening A Tiny Window

'Advent calendars also have been a childhood fascination. There is something theatrical in opening a tiny window with a day by day outlook into a fantasy scene everyday which is part of a bigger theatrical context.'

The term 'Advent' is an anglicized version of the Latin word adventus, meaning coming. Beginning on the fourth Sunday before December 25, advent is about the waiting. In this case however, the waiting is about the excitement, the anticipation of what is to come. It is really Christmas foreplay. Most of us hate waiting, but the build up to certain moments in many cases can often be more enjoyable than the moment itself.

For many, the time between December 1st and December 25th is full of crazed busyness, decorating, shopping, work functions, parties, wrapping, baking and preparing. One of the ways that people mark this time, today especially children, is through an Advent Calendar. Each day, the days until Christmas get shorter and with the opening of each calendar window, a visual, and often chocolate, reward awaits. Artist and model Stephan Tobias's fascination with the yearly ritual is at the core of this series of visually stimulating images.

'My way of staging my pictures with those somewhat frozen poses seems to be going along with this quite well. The self indulgence of a sweet baby story is reflected here by my own narcissistic self indulgence. A bit of irony may add to the fun of this sweet season, even if in the end this exercise of mine is about creating beauty, too.'

Born in Berlin, Stephan was raised in Southern Germany and self trained as photographer and graphic artist. Stephan studied history, philosophy and law in Tübingen, Aix-en-Provence, Hamburg, Munich which led to his eventually practicing law in Berlin. For Stephan, photography, even in his childhood days, has been a way of playfully interacting with the world, in search of expression and a personal artistic view.

'The male nude over the last years has been the main focus of my work, and I keep adding to the experience, both as a model and as a photographer. By showing a nude body in an open space I intend to playfully examine the relationship between the subject and the object, between the individual and the world around it. Digital alterations sometimes become a way of extending that process and to re-focus on the subject. Ars lunga, vita brevis - I may be scratching in the wrong corner as I am attracting so many porn lovers, but I do intend to continue playing around in search of a meaningful expression.'

Twas Two Days Before Christmas

Twas two days before Christmas, when all through Manhattan,
Including the outskirts from Brooklyn to Staten
The tension was rising, the police on alert
All trying to ensure, not another would get hurt

The Mayor tried to nestle all snug in his bed
But thoughts of the insults danced loudly in his head
His wife in her kerchief tried to console
But nothing could lessen the wound to his soul

When out on the roof, there arose such a clatter
They sprang from their beds to see what was the matter
Away to the window, they flew like a flash
tore open the shutters and threw up the sash

The Manhattan Santa was out on his route
100% naked, even the mayor thought 'how cute'
Both bags he was hauling were pulsing and red
but trouble was brewing just up ahead...

The crowd starting fighting about what had occurred
The issue of race began getting blurred
This naked Santa gave all a great site
Though a few seemed perturbed he wasn't 100% white

Did they welcome this stranger with joy or with fear
Did they yell out a scream or just let out a cheer
We're New Yorkers they cried, all races welcome!
Every child under God, sent down from the Heavens!

Because in America, from New York to LA
It's cool to be black, European, now even gay
Just don't be surprised if there's a lock on our door
If you're Mexican, overweight  & especially if you're poor

Naked man claiming to be Jesus burns down church!

'According to CBS46, 24-year-old J Ramirez (below) was found by police naked near the Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church after he had allegedly set fire to it and three other fires on the property. Ramirez told them that he was attempting to contact Indian gods.'

'We're going to start construction on the repairs tomorrow morning so we're getting right back into it. Hopefully have Christmas in there.'

12 Days: Stephen Hagan in A Royal Christmas

#1 Stephen Hagan

Tale as old as time... Emily is the daughter of a Philadelphia tailor. A seamstress with a blue-collar background who finds out her boyfriend Leo is actually a prince, heir to the throne of the small sovereign country Cordinia. As luck would have it however, the prince's mother Queen Isadora does not welcome her into the castle with open arms during a Christmas visit.

Lacy Chabert (making her second appearance as the love interest in a 12 Days pic) plays Emily and Jane Seymour is the Queen. The Prince was played by Stephen Hagan, an actor who instantly stood out, (and not just because of his beautiful blue eyes) and whom I am guessing is going to have a long successful career in front of him. If you haven't heard of him, you will, most of his credits thus far are for roles on the London Stage.

Growing up in Belfast, Ireland, Hagan got his training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In the UK, Hagan has appeared on stage in many productions including the original cast of the West End/Broadway hit production End of the Rainbow, Cyrano de Bergerac opposite Joseph Fiennes in Chichester Festival Theatre, The York Relist at Riverside Studios, The Real Thing at Salisbury Playhouse and The Giant at Hampstead Theatre. He has also taken his turn in several productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, including roles in Twelfth Night, The Tempest, The Comedy of Errors and Troilus and Cresida.

Hagan also appeared in Clapham Junction, a film I have covered on FH. Hagan will soon be seen in Clavius along side Joseph Fiennes and Peter Firth and on next seasons Midsomer Murders.

Red Hats & Flannel by Male Beauty by bengie

'There's something about a man in a Santa Claus suit that just drives me absolutely crazy! I don't know. Maybe it's-- it's the warmth of all that RED HOT SWEATY flannel, set against the austere coldness of those BLACK PANTHER LEATHER jack boots...OR maybe it's because those rosy cheeks and twinkling eyes bespeak a passion that is about to erupt from a man who just spent a COLD LONELY year cooped up with a pack of dwarfs! I'm not sure.'

Above: Ville

I remember watching that episode of Golden Girls with my grandmother when I was a kid (in fact she still has the show, and Matlock on what seems an endless loop...) and thinking Blanche was wrong. I didn't like Santa that much as a kid, especially not the Santa's I saw at the malls who were often too thin, sweaty and not nearly as magical as they should have been.

As I have gotten older, I have begun to appreciate the sweaty flannel and leather boots, especially when photographed by a skilled photographer. Cheshire based Photographer Bengie describes himself as just a country guy who happens to love photography, art and the male body, I can certainly relate. A former city dweller, I now live in the land of cows, goats and endless festivals which celebrate... well pretty much anything that grows and pops up from the dirt.

Benjie isn't looking for fame, nor really seeks the lime light and this is one of the reasons I am so grateful he supported me sharing his work. I think for me, living in the country is one of the reasons I began FH in the first place. When I first moved here over a decade ago, there wasn't much in the way of art, let alone art focused on the male form. FH has given me the opportunity to step into worlds far away from the farm life, bringing a bit of art, not to mention incredible artists and incredible men into my rural world.

Just Because: Lap Full

Most kids seem either oblivious, or totally terrified when visiting their local mall Santa. Either way, they usually have zero memory of it, or more often,  are scarred for life! I think The Property Brothers have the right idea. Mall Santa's should really be hired to hold only adults on their laps. Kids already have the excitement and spirit of the season, it is really adults who need a little reminder of the magic of the season. Nothing like two hot, not to mention, skilled brothers to bring it out.

The Cast Of Christmas

$

A few weeks ago, I wrote about televisions annoying new pattern of ending most of their series in November, usually with a lame Winter Finale. Part of my disdain for this practice is it's pretty much ending the traditional Christmas episode. I know networks don't really love Christmas episodes as they don't always low well in syndication, but audiences sure love them.

Here are some shows, some current, some from before my time that didn't stop producing episodes in November, but went on to celebrate the season. I wasn't yet born when Mary Tyler Moore, The Brady Bunch and The Beverly Hillbillies aired their Christmas episodes, but unlike most of what airs today, I pull them out every now and then to enjoy. If you haven't seen some of them yet, there are some great Holiday Treat DVD's with many classic holiday episodes, here are two of my favorites from Amazon, Holiday Treats&Christmas Treats.

Away From The Manger: Alex Derita by Male Model Photography

'When I first began shooting, I practiced on the only subjects that would stand still for me: the cows on the farm adjacent to our property, until finally a friend, Carlos, came over one day and expressed interest in being a model. He became the first "male model" for Hugh'

All new photographers have to start somewhere and many, like myself, begin with friends, family, holidays and special occasions. But even before moving on to human models, and their weddings and graduations, it is great to work with subjects who don't judge or critique your technique as you're learning. I used to have boxes and folders full of images of my dogs, my cat, my mother's budgie and even a stellar series on the secret life of my hamster.

I related fully to Hugh's describing shooting the cows next door, I have shot (visually that is) cows myself, and if they aren't spooked, they are generally reliable models, although a bit too curious sometimes, often walking towards the lens screwing up focus.

Based in Kissimmee, Florida, due to a family emergency, Hugh headed north to Long Island just before Thanksgiving. Before leaving, he browsed Model Mayhem for potential models in the area and came across the profile of Alex Derita. 'He had about six photos on his port, only two of them professionally taken, but I saw something in him that intrigued me. I reached out to him and he agreed to a shoot.'

Now this is where we jump ahead to Christmas present. From from his home in Florida, far from the cows, far from the farm, these images are actually part of Hugh's third shoot with Alex, but given it's Christmas, Hugh and Alex have agreed to let me skip over shoots 1 and 2 (until the weekend that is...) and start with number 3. After seeing one of Hugh's Santa shots of Alex, I too was intrigued and was eager to feature their work together over the holiday.

'I decided I wanted to do something for the Christmas holidays, so I picked up a Santa hat. I told Alex it was kind of trite and hokey, but I wanted to do it. Alex just jumped right in and performed beautifully. He has a twinkle in his eye that rivals old St. Nick, and I hope I captured that. He is a combination of "beefcake" (a term he was unfamiliar with) and the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. We did a series of shots with that hat: Alex shaving, Alex as a sexy elf and Alex as a sexy Santa offering multiple gifts.'

I believe Hugh nailed exactly what it is that initially intrigued me and drew me to his work with Alex. FH readers know I love themed images, especially holiday themed, but Hugh is right that here are a lot of hokey, even sort of tacky, holiday themed images out there. Although Hugh used the Santa hat, his focus remained beautifully focuses on his model and used the prop to bring out qualities, not cover them up.

Alex has an incredible body, but those green eyes do twinkle, lighting up his face with a welcoming, and incredibly sexy energy. They can also be incredibly soulful. As an actor, Alex also morphs seamlessly into character using facial expressions, a killer grin, and those magical eyes to convey a broad range of emotions and looks. Be sure to check back on the weekend to see, and read, more about Hugh's work with Alex.

12 Days: A Bakers Dozen, James Gaisford in Christmas Under Wraps

I clearly got into my 12 Days series this year, so much so I could not stop with 12... So much so that I watched a Candace Cameron Bure Christmas movie. (Don't judge me, nor her by her brother!). Christmas Under Wraps stars the former Full House star heading to Alaska for a medical Internship. The new doctor soon gets caught up with both the Christmas spirit, and her hunky co-star, actor David O'Donnell.

Early in the film however, there is another actor who lights up the screen with his adorable smile and positive vibe. 20 year old actor James Gaisford plays Wyatt, the flower delivery guy who drops by the clinic on a regular basis. I had not seen James before, but the former model, along with his co-star Kendra Mylnechuk made the more interesting couple to follow in the flick.

Below James with Kendra Mylnechuk

James has only been acting a short while, but already has three Holiday films under his belt, along with a couple of features, short and television movies. James has one of those great face that has you rooting for him from the get go. Definitely worth turning 12 days into 13. You can see more of James on his Facebook Fanpage HERE:

Good Tidings

I just wrote, then rewrote, then deleted a rather lengthy Christmas message and greeting. It concerned Christmas pasts, my parents and my not being able to be home this year. In rereading it, it was rather self indulgent. Admittedly most of FH is self indulgent, sometimes even sentimental. When I reread it though, it was not fun self indulgence. I had the same feeling I get when I read things like 'My Life Is Over', 'I can't take it any more' etc on people's twitter and facebook pages.

I then started fresh, and went into a long speech about emotional giving vs financial. How I wished for prosperous emotional give and take in 2015. I deleted that one too. When in doubt though, it is best just to say Thank you. Thank you to all who check into FH each day, each week or even now and then. Since beginning the blog, my readership went up, then up again then threw the roof! Then it went down a bit, then a little bit more but has remained pretty stable the last couple of years and although comments remain minimal. (I know... self indulgent lack of comments...comment) I know there are many of you who enjoy spending a few minutes of your day with FH.

I hope you all have A Merry Christmas and a few memorable moments this holiday season!
