The Great Goreski

Despite my love of Joan Rivers, I had never seen an episode of Fashion Police until this week. I wasn't even sure I had the E channel until I did a search and found it way up in the hundreds on my television set. I, like many of you, have loved award shows since I was a kid. With Hollywood feeling like a world away from the rec room in which I watched, award shows were a gate way of sorts to a life I could only dream about.

I have also never really been into fashion or the red carpet. Although fun I guess, in some ways it feels the red carpet coverage has almost become the main event. The pressure on actors at award shows is already immense, it almost seems to cruel to add the red carpet, and all the wannabee's throwing microphones in their faces as they walk on by.

I did watch Fashion Police this week, and I sort of enjoyed it. Not because I love Kathy Griffin, not because I am warming to Kelly Osbourne and certainly not because I have figured out why Giuliana Rancic is considered a celebrity. I watched only because of Brad Goreski. I had never heard of Brad until this season's finale of The Comeback. I had never seen him on tv before nor knew of his reputation as a fashion and celebrity stylist.

But... I have become mildly obsessed with learning, and seeing, more after Brad did his slip and slide in Valerie Cherish's bathroom sewage in one of the season's most hilarious scenes. The slip and slid led to Brad ridding himself of most of clothes, exposing his great chest which is all I saw during the brief scene when he and Valerie'publicist Billy (Dan Bucatinsky) carried the Emmy Gown Valerie to her awaiting limo. Not sure if I will stick with Fashion Police, time will tell, but I will be keeping my eye on Brad Goreski.

29 Models in 30 Days: Alan Taylor by John M Clum

'It was a working trip if you call this work. I photographed 29 models in about 30 days. Alan was in Akron, my first overnight stop of the drive.'

Most of us have heard of speed walking, speed skating and even speed dating, but Pennsylvania's John M Clum has taking speeding to a whole new level with his world wind cross country speed shooting tours! What better way to experience both the country, and the many models along the way but packing your photography equipment and heading out on the road. I am pleased to feature images from John's first stop last summer with model Alan Taylor shot in Akron Ohio. Alan was #1 of 29 models shot over the next thirty days as John headed West, eventually reaching Venice Beach California, then East on his trek back home to Ohio. Even with the frenzied pace, John's skill behind the lens led to these striking images, beautifully utilizing the brightness, lines and colors of his surroundings to compliment Alan and his incredible body and soulful eyes.

'After leaving Akron, my second stop was Terre Haute Indiana. Third stop was Springfield Missouri. Fourth stop was Amarillo Texas. Fifth stop was Albuquerque New Mexico where I spent 2 nights then my sixth stop Scottsdale Arizona where I shot many models and stayed about 6 nights. Next my 7th stop was Venice Beach California where I shot many more models and stayed 7 nights. Eighth stop was St George Utah where I spent 2 nights and rested up. Ninth stop was Denver Colorado where I shot many more models and stayed six nights and then I headed straight home stopping a few nights along the way.'

John is heading back on the road again this summer, leaving Pennsylvania in early August with planned stops in Arizona, San Diego, West Hollywood, eventually landing in San Francisco on September 2nd. If you're a model who finds yourself somewhere on the map of John's late summer journey maybe you will be part of this summers photographic road trip!

If you live in the North East, the 'news', and 24 hours cycle of it, would have you convinced Armageddon is upon us. In reality, it was just a run of the mill snow storm. The local stations, networks and cable are salivating through the coverage like TMZ at a Kardashian funeral. The news today is simply one big tabloid with the definition of what is actually news long ago lost with the stain on that dress and an ill fitting glove.

MacGyver: Jake by Nathan Scott

Sometimes my favorite shoots come from though tout concepts, careful planning and preparation. Sometimes, they happen in the moment, propelled by unplanned events, luck and circumstance. Regardless of the plan, photographer and creator Nathan Scott always manages to pull to things together despite whatever challenges are thrown his way. Nathan is like the MacGyver of photographers, and even if he only had a camera, a paper clip and ball point pen, as long as he had a talented model, incredible images would result!

Nathan's work was a big part of FH through most of last summer and Autumn. As I put together my Quaternate piece featuring Nathan's imagery, I knew it was time to start 2015 with more of Nathan's images on the blog. Nathan has been very busy since I last featured his work, his latest project, raising funds to support his fashion line to be ready for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week next month.

With everything he has going on, thankfully Nathan still finds time to get some of the brightest and hottest models in front of his camera. Jake looks one part athlete, one part Abercrombie and one part superhero. With his incredible body, beautiful face and eyes, not to mention that jaw, Jake looks ready to don the spandex and save the world! As is always the case, Nathan captured all of Jake's best sides showcasing not just his amazing physique, but sexy and steely stare and athletic skills and abilities.

With the snow currently blowing around outside, I especially enjoy Nathan's shots of Jake in the surf. With all of the great shots and set-ups Nathan and Jake managed to capture, the shoot almost didn't happen. Circumstances, and an unfortunate one for another model, had Nathan in Houston, camera ready, all set to go without a model to shoot. This is when Nathan morphed into MacGyver and as you can see from the images, mission accomplished!

'So his shoot was a last minute shoot. I went down to Houston to shoot Michael Hoffman after he had rescheduled from no showing on his first shoot when the videos leaked. Well a gif leaked and I had a feeling he was going to no show on me. So I got on Instagram and contacted Jake on the off chance he would be able to shoot. He agreed which was fantastic because the shoot was literally less than 10 hours away at this point.'

'We got to Galveston beach and it was raining. So we were in a McDonald's parking lot, I went inside and promptly borrowed one of their trash bags and my assistants hair tie. Ripped a hole in the bag and pushed my lens through it, attached my shutter protector and fastened it with a hair tie and we walked down the beach. So for the first shots, I am literally inside a giant trash bag shooting.'

'The shots under the pier we found by accident this abandoned pier that was sealed up. Well we crawled through a tiny opening in the chain fence and started shooting under there with the pillars and the broken wood pallets and my absolute favorite the water dripping down. Prior to this we had been shooting against a stone block that rested up against it, had we looked on the other side of it we would have seen a nice easy opening cut open, that did not require climbing and playing Tetris with our body to get into the cut of fence on the other side.'

'We finally finished up at this gorgeous park in Pearland and that was all the athletic shots. We decided to use some of the new 2015 collection of Blue Collar Underwear and get some really sporty looks of Jake. We got really lucky with him in that we found out at the shoot that he had 2 bad experiences with bad photographers so it was really nice to shoot with him and without realizing any of this, making him feel comfortable and have fun and smile, and deliver some amazing shots. I added several of his shots into my hard portfolio that I take to agencies because of how amazing of a look he has!'

Actor & Role: Justin Chambers as Massimo

It seems like the 2001 movie The Wedding Planner is on television all the time, but I only got around to finally watching the Jennifer Lopez flick this past weekend. Despite the flimsy premise and former chick flick staple Matthew McConaughey it had it's moments.

Justin Chambers has always been my favorite cast member on Grey's Anatomy. Even with the uneven writing his character has endured, Chambers always makes Alex someone I root for. The former model transitioned into acting in 1995 with his first role on the NBC soap Another World. Small guest shots and movies followed by The Wedding Planner was arguably the role that gained the actor his biggest audience.

Chambers with Alex Rocco

Chambers is absolutely adorable as the sweet, but goofy Massimo. It is a tell tell sign of an actors appeal that I was hoping Jennifer Lopez might choose Chambers instead of the predictable ending with her and McConaughey. Even early in his career, Chambers holds his own and stands out in each of his few scenes.

New Manhattan Studio's Wes has become one of my favorite artists to collaborate with. Wes not only shares his incredible imagery, he also shares the story behind the process of his work, from his first contact with models through the final edited images. Wes goes above and beyond, creating video's and image presentations exclusively for FH, giving readers a complete visual experience. I have always loved behind the scenes shots, and Wes has created some of my all time favorites. It was his behind the scenes images of his assistant Alex working with Bond this past Autumn that inspired Behind The Scenes as my theme for FH for 2015. Wes strives for greatness and seems to top himself with each shoot and model he generously shares. Has me always looking forward to what's coming next!

MStyles: Light Of Day

'I felt that I breathed an atmosphere of sorrow.'
Edgar Allan Poe

Each and every time I immerse myself in the imagery of Michael Styles I am overcome with an overwhelming feeling of melancholy laced déjà vu. It seems the winter brings this out more. I didn't realize when I contacted Michael again this January, but while piecing together Light Of Day, I realized it is unintentionally the third part of a trilogy.

In November 2013, I did a piece featuring Michael's work entitled Where You Sleep. I followed this up in January 2014 with a story I called Winter Blues. It was not a conscience that was a dark winter's day that drew me back to a folder that had been dormant on my desktop since last year. While putting together Winter Blues, I put aside a selection of window images that brought the natural light of day into the rooms of the men Michael captured.

As I thought of a way to present these saved moments, my mind again went back to that room I spent much of my teenage years growing up in. Maybe part of the reason is that Michael shoots so many of his models in their own homes. One of my first pieces featuring Michael's work focused on one of his visual themes, The Apartment Project, which featured models in their own surroundings, increasing the comfort level and intimacy Michael's subjects had with their surroundings.

One of the other main reasons for the melancholy feel of déjà vu is the power my teenage bedroom had in forming who I am today. So many things happened in there from my first sexual experience, both with myself and with another, to it's four walls absorbing all of the joy, laughter, sorrow and pain of moving from one's twelve year on year through their eighteenth. It was eighteen that I first moved out (briefly though, I was destined to return for another year).

I was home visiting my family earlier this week and something hit me that I had never fully absorbed before. It was something I always knew, but never quite connected with my current writing and love of window theme images until now. It is only my parents left in the house, all of my siblings and I have been gone for at least 12 years. In the last few years, my mother has shoved our belongings at us each time any of us visit. They seem determined to have every memento and memory we ever owned extracted from the house. They claim it is to clear the clutter, but I think in truth it is to make it easier for us, leaving the house tidy and in order after they are gone.

My teenage room is now vacant, make that desolate. The room is in the basement, a floor of the house rarely used any more except for laundry and occasionally when a tool is needed from the furnace room. In the room There is nothing left of those years I spent in there. There is a new bed, rarely slept in for company, an empty dresser and night stand and not one poster picture or mirror on the walls. Those walls at one time were full of movie and celebrity posters and pictures of all my friends and I> The closet is full, but of empty suitcases and toilet paper and paper towels bought in bulk from Costco. The walls have long ago been repainted, covering up the scars of my youth.

'Melancholy is sadness that has taken on lightness.'
Italo Calvino

I love that Michael's work continually transports me back to those feeling I had in that room. Writer Calvino is correct that melancholy maybe have elements of sadness, but it is pain-light, covering the worst of the damage with a filter that makes it easier to return to and accept. Melancholy can even be enjoyable. With the right frame of mind, the right piece of music and the right glass of wine it can be something to actually look forward to.

I think I return to Michael's work more in the winter as it is the season that has kidnapped the natural light we all crave and need. Winter holds this light close, giving us just small amounts each day until once again Spring is able to steal it back. Through the windows in Michael's images, the light is always let in, it is always bright and always strong. It is always hovering, illuminating and freezing each and every moment within the room it watches over so that we can return to that feeling whenever we need that emotional fix.

Most of you know this image, it is one of my all time favorites, and has become the image used to represent the Artists Who Inspire link at the side of FH.

How Old Are You?

When I posted about actor Matt Lattanzi's birthday this week, I linked to an old post featuring caps from Rich & Famous (1981). I think Matt's pant removal has to be one of the slowest, and hottest, removal of clothing scenes I have seen. He knows he has Ms. Bissett in the palm of his hands. I forgot to add the video to the old post, so thought I would post it today.

Journey to Blacks Beach: Yoni by YogaBear Studio

'We ended up getting together for a shoot at Blacks Beach. I had not shot there and was a bit nervous about taking my clothes of in a "public" setting. I focused on David and his fantastic locations and went to work. It's very easy to communicate with David as in some regards I am still new to this business, and he has been a great help!'

I usually choose to focus on one model or shoot when I profile an artists work on FH. One of the reasons is that inevitably, when featuring a variety of models, there is always one model in particular that strikes my creative imagination and interest. One model whose images, on that day and time resonate more deeply than the others. When I was working on RePose last month, one of my favorite themes from David of YogaBear Studio, that model was Yoni Baker.

I love when model and artists are able to weave strength with beauty. So many artists photograph masculinity with such firm limits, a series of muscled body parts, serious faces and traditional tight and often stiff poses. Yoni is visually undoubtedly masculine, a strong face, serious soulful brown eyes that show both a depth of spirit and life being lived. His body firm, fit and muscled and extraordinarily taken care of. Yet, in RePose, (Yoni is featured in the second two images) Yoni was also light, beautiful, vulnerable and elegant. There was something artistic not only about David's images, but the man within them, something I wanted to know more about.

My intuition proved on point, not a model and body builder Yoni is a makeup fx artist who is perusing character and acting opportunities in both film and video using his education, skill and experience as an fx artist to enhance his abilities and what he can bring to any project he is involved with. Yoni's passion for both the building of his body, and his skill with the visual arts stems from a rather arbitrary yet perfectly logical source.

'It was 1980 something, and while playing with my action figures , my Abba (father in Hebrew) tells me to come and watch a movie with him. A science fiction fan, he puts on the original Terminator…at 10 something year’s old, eyes wide, mouth open I was both inspired and terrified. Inspired, because this was the start of my bodybuilding, sculpting /makeup effects and terrified because the machine would not stop… It would never stop.'

Yoni shares that many years later, influenced by his deep artistic and cultural background, his parents, film and Judaism, he attended a make-up trade show where someone, just in passing, mentioned that he become an art model. Initially he gave it little thought. A couple of years later however, that passing comment took root and Yoni decided to give a try. 'The day of my first modeling gig I thought I was having a heart attack, and realized thanks to my love that it was just a panic attack! Since then the thought of taking my clothes off does not bother me, but what does, is not being creative, and not pushing the artists skills that are there with me.'

Yoni first met David at a photo event at a San Diego Art Institute event in Balboa Park. Yoni was modeling for a group of about 8-10 photographers. With that many artists looking for the just the right pose, just the right feeling and look, the group process led to a rather exhausting night David was one of the photographers Yoni quickly bonded with. 'As a photo enthusiast, make-up artist and model I have spent time in front of and behind the camera. Met a lot of great directors, cinematographers and not so great. So inevitably I was drawn to David's camera eye as I picked up on his vision and laid back, but focused personality.' David was as well drawn to Yoni, especially his classical approach to posing which David says brings so much artistry to the work and images.

'I like David's story telling and painterly characterization of my personality and body...The body mind connection, with the subtle yet powerful impact of the environment I am in.'
Yoni

If you check out YogaBear Studio's blog entry on his work with Yoni, (HERE:) you will see that David has shot Yoni in a variety of themes and locations. For some reason, David's shots of Yoni on Blacks Beach were some of my favorites. In some ways they seem to visually illustrate so much of what I love about both David's and Yoni's work. I especially love the majesty of Yoni's strength and powerful form set against the powerful Pacific waves. In some images, it is almost if they are going toe to toe, in a timeless, almost epic merge of man and earth with Yoni keeping the waves at bay.

Just Because: Fumble

I don't follow football but do love basketball and especially hockey and understand what it's like to get wrapped up in a sporting event, or any event for that matter. Yesterday, there were endless little digs about the game, the sport, and so many who'claimed' sarcastically not have even known it was Super Bowl Sunday.. Straight guys don't usually spend the day of the Oscar's or the Tony's posting sarcastic twitter or facebook comments about the event or claiming not to know it is Tony or Academy Award day. I believe the reason they don't do this because most actually don't know it is an award show day and more importantly, don't really care. Why is it then that we seem to care so much about an event that we feel the need to deflate it... (sorry pun unavoidable)

Maybe it is natural and stems from the pain that many of us experienced at one time or another, that feeling of being on the outside, of feeling left out. The Super Bowl is in many ways a traditional big ole symbol of heterosexuality. Michael Sam aside, football remains pointedly gay unfriendly with images and stories featuring angry gruff faces and testosterone driven violence that is sometimes difficult to get one's head around. I guess kind of like how some might feel about Hugh Jackman bouncing around Radio City Music Hall and the obsession with Red Carpet Fashion. Sort of comes down to respecting differences, something so many of us dismiss when we think of just the right zinger to update our status with.

The Super Bowl has become this odd fusion of cultures, America's sport scheduled in between's Pop and Broadway stars belting out the National anthem and in the last few years, many of the Queens of Pop Music doing the half time show. I kind of think the Super Bowl should return to having classic rock stars providing half time entertainment. Putting Katy Perry, Madonna or Beyonce in at half time is sort of like having Kirk Cameron as keynote speaker for a GBLT film festival... sort of begs to be mocked, anyone with a keyboard would be remiss not to weave Growing & Pains into some sort of lymerick.
