Eight Days Of The Week: Wednesday

$

With Reality TV (Idol, Big Brother & Survivor) dominating much of Wednesdays Prime Time line-up, choosing my favorite Wednesday 5 was not a difficult task. Although just my third instalment of Eight Days, Hump Days proved the easiest for making choices thus far. The only real decision was whether to include one, two or all of Empire's luscious Lyon brothers.

Charlie McDermott in The Middle

To me, The Middle is one of televisions best, and also under appreciated shows. Although the kids, (Sue & Brick in particular) can grate on your nerves from time to time, the show is a true slice of life for many working American families. I love the show's holiday episodes, no holiday is left untouched and no celebrity event (The Oscar's, Royal Weddings) are ignored by Frankie, (Patricia Heaton) or the writers. I also love me some Axel played Charlie McDermott. McDermott is not just adorable, (in or out of his boxers) he is a talented actor who turns the mean older brother into a warm and winning character. I hope The Middle returns for another season, but producers and networks are already after McDermott who has recently signed on as the lead in the CBS pilot Super Clyde. I hope no matter what happens with the new shot, Axel continues to stress out his parents for another season or two.

Jonathan Jackson in Nashville

I am not sure why I don't watch Nashville, it has everything I usually love in a tv show. Great actors, music, soapy drama and plenty of male eye candy including the beautiful and talented Jonathan Jackson. Jackson is a great actor and has one of the most beautiful faces on television. I just began enjoying Parenthood after it's cancellation so maybe Nashville will be like one of the many shows I dive into and devour after it has left the air.

Simon Baker in The Mentalist

The Mentalist is another show I don't watch, it might because it is one of my parents favorite shows, but it has never been a draw. That doesn't mean I don't love it's star Simon Baker. I have been enjoying Simon since first seeing some of his early role in movies and on Australian tv shows in the early 90's. Simon is one of those actors who has mass appeal, but I sort of enjoy him in roles where he has more of an edge, showing his darker side. Hopefully with The Mentalist ending, he will find his way back to the big screen.

Trai Byers in Empire

I love how over Empire's first short season, writer gave each of the brothers moments to shine. In the pilot, the focus was on Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and after his first song, I instantly loved Jussie and his character. In the next few episodes the ultra hot Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) was given the spotlight, and Lyons share of shirtless scenes. All the while however, simmering in the background was Andre Lyon. Played by the amazing Trai Byers, as the battle for his father's record company raged on, Andre was heading for a breakdown. I barely paid attention, except for his magnificent chest, to Trai at first, his character seemed the weakest link in the trio of Lyon brothers. Within a few episodes however, the writers, and Byers turned Andre into the shows most interesting brother to watch.

Stephen Amell in Arrow

Stephen Amell is quite simply one of televisions hottest actors. In addition to his incredible face and body however, is the fact that Amell is not only a talented actor, he also seems like a caring and sincere guy who seems to have great respect and appreciation for those who admire his work. I remember first seeing Amell, and his breathtaking backside on an episode of Dante's Cove. It was no surprise to watch Amell quickly move from supporting roles on Canadian TV to being the lead on his own prime time US television show.

Regular readers of FH are aware of my fascination with windows and reflection within photography. My interest is both visual and metaphorical. Visually, windows provide a second vantage point in which to view a model or subject. Although identical, when reflected through a reflection, there are also subtle and deceptive differences between what is, and what is seen. We only need to look in a mirror to know that what we see is but one perspective of what is actually there.

I first introduced FH readers to Male Beauty by bengie last December in a Christmas themed post entitled Red Hats & Flannel. In that piece, I loved how Cheshire based Photographer Bengie described himself as just a country guy who happens to love photography, art and the male body. That country setting Bengie inhabits is not just where he lives, but also a theme and the location for much of his work.

If you peruse Benji's portfolio, you will see many of his images are shot on the farm. The house, the meadows and country side near by. The barn and by the woodpile and fences that surround the area. I love that Benji shoots so many of the beautiful men he shoots in similar settings, with constant and fixed locations. When choosing my next set of images to feature, I was drawn to Bengie's images in front of and near by the patio French doors.

The beauty of the male form looks particularly alluring in this patio setting. There is something romantic about French doors, especially when they act as the visual gateway to a quiet farm in the English countryside. Although the setting is static, each model changes slightly how the doors are presented. Their bodies and poses, personalities and fashion, (if any) and the angles Bengie uses make each image distinctive. I also love that that although each model poses outside, there reflection remains safely inside behind the the glass doors.

Bengie also allows the viewer a sneak peak at what is front of his models.  Their reflections allow us see a just a bit of what they are seeing in front of them, all the while keeping any hint of the man behind the camera... discretely hidden.

I was surprisingly slow getting into Max's underpants, but I have made up for it with multiple visits. If you missed out on model, actor and writer Max Emerson's first episode of Max's Underpants, check out his youtube channel HERE:

In episode 2, Max and sidekick Willam Belli are joined by model Colby Melvin in an instalment entitled The Straight Model. Not only witty, funny and incredible sexy, Max shines a light on a subject that all of us who follow the industry are curious about. Often we see models together in situations which involve little to no clothing or fashion. I especially love when a photographer chooses to surround a clothed female celebrity with a dozen or so naked male models.

I am sure our fantasy's of how these shoots progress are much more exciting that how things actually go, (or maybe not) but Max smartly keeps his focus on how we think things go, making for fun and enjoyable ride. Make sure to subscribe after watching the video!

FH Flashback: Rob Lowe in Masquerade, 1988

I can't say for sure, but if memory serves me, Masquerade was the first time I laid eyes on actor Rob Lowe. I actually wasn't a huge fan of Lowe until a few years ago but I remember distinctly sitting in the theatre with my friends as Lowe's luscious bottom graced the big screen in front of me.

Masquerade co-starred star of the moment Meg Tilly along with memorable performances from Kim Catrall, John Glover and a tighty whitie wearing young actor Doug Savant. Masquerade certainly wasn't one of Lowe's best films, but it was pop corn eating fun for an 12 year old kid on a Saturday night at the movies. The movie has had surprisingly few television airings and the only copy I could find was a non HD non wide screen DVD version. I included Lowe's lovely butt baring scene below.

Every One Of His Moments: Marshawn Randolph by LightWeaver

'Marshawn's a pretty fierce young man I must say. I'd love to see Tyra take him under her wing on America's Next Top Model. Marshawn would definitely shine on that show. Hopefully we'll do a round two sooner rather than later. Either way I'm sure you'll see more of him!'

Every time I feature the work of Indianapolis photographer Jay Rickard, (LightWeaver) I reminded of his masterful use of color and light. Jay beautifully weaves masculinity and the male form with glamour and a hint of mystery. It comes through in the poses he captures, the lighting he uses of course and the deep shades of blue, red and purple that drape his models. Jay's work always takes me to another place and time. It is not a time necessarily in history but more a place, a fantasy, the way we feel old Hollywood used to look and feel. When I was growing up living on the East coast, the magic of Hollywood and the movies might as well have been across the world or on another planet. Jay's images however are able to visually take me to that place in an instant.

Although Jay is shooting a bit less than he used to, when he does I feel fortunate to be able to share the magic. Jay recently got back on Model Mayhem after some time away to look around. Jay loves working with new models so was curious to see if there were any new faces around which would inspire him to plan a new shoot. 'I saw Marshawn's page and he had posted some cell phone and senior pics from which I could tell he showed some promise.'

Although new to modeling, Marshawn Randolph is a natural and shine's in front Jay's lens. Marshawn's strong face and brilliant Hazel eyes are especially striking bathed in the light and colors Jay surrounds him with. His lean long body creates beautifully stunning and beautifully photographed poses. Marshawn also has one of the hottest, and most well defined, inguinal creases I have seen with his impressive V cut heading seductively downward, magnificently framing his incredible abs.

'I've always enjoyed the process of working with a new model. I prefer their freshness over someone who shows up with a handful of poses, two expressions and a boat load of ego. A new models eagerness shows in the images and I think it makes their portfolios more interesting, less plastic. Needless to say he didn't disappoint. This was just a test shoot. We didn't have many clothing options and I didn't have any planned ahead of time. So we got into the studio and just went with the flow. After Marshawn got warmed up he got more confident and the poses starting flowing more and his personality began to surface in the images.'
LightWeaver

Marshawn has dreams of going far in life. Although modeling and acting are his passion, the Marion Indiana model is realistic and knows that it takes more than just talent and great looks. It takes hard work, a bit of luck and for Marshawn, keeping professionalism front and center. Marshawn believes in bringing the best he has to offer to every job and photo shoot. The 21 year old model comes from a large family and has an identical twin which understandably, makes standing out, even more of a passion and goal.

'I am very caring and respectful and have a unique personality I consider it to be one of a kind. I'm a hard worker and enjoy being on set. As they say, capture the moment and I love to capture every one of my moments. Jay Rickard is a awesome guy to work with he knows his lighting and keeps it professional at all times. If he sees you doing an error he will tell you and explain the correct way to capture that moment. He is a blast to be around and I look forward to doing many more photo shoots with him.'

Isaac - the Melbourne One

First three images of Isaac from Steven Granger

'What can I tell you about Mr. Isaac that you can't see for yourself? If this young man doesn't end up on the cover of GQ one day I'll be very surprised. Australia's next male Supermodel? Well just remember, you saw him here first!'

'Steven Granger was another incredibly satisfying shoot. He being a consummate professional photographer, and I was very intimidated about working with him as I still considered myself as some random guy with a good bod masquerading as a model. A few minutes in however, I started to relax, experiment a bit with poses and discovered that Steven has this intensely satisfying giggle he emits when he gets a particularly good shot. After that, it was so easy to find a groove and just smash out great shot after great shot.'

Modeling has always appealed to 23 year Isaac but he never knew exactly the best way to enter the industry. A few days before his first photo shoot, a shoot Isaac was considering paying hundreds of dollars to have done, he got lucky. Isaac found King For A Day, a boutique male modeling agency that took Isaac's initial shots and pointed him in the direction of Model Mayhem! The main catalyst however, was finishing his science degree and the realization that starting a 'career' at this point in his life was not that appealing. After completing University, it was the first time in his life that he could completely create his own schedule and prioritise what he wanted to his with HIS time. Isaac was going on acting auditions, learning to play to the saxophone and exploring passions he had not been able to do because of the rigid structure of University life.

Next two images from MovaFoto

'It’s funny actually - I started modelling with making bank being a priority, but since then the art aspect of it has taken over. I absolutely love being able to meet artists and all sorts of interesting creative types. I have done little paid work, but the experiences I've gained from it are sometimes so profoundly interesting that the meeting people and artistic element has eclipsed the money prerogative, not to mention that self confidence boost.'

With his incredible face, piercing blue eyes and that crazy hot head of blonde hair, the 6' 3" Melbourne model has the look, and the body, to model almost anything. Isaac, as you can beautifully see, looks great in or out of his clothing, and with his passion for the creative process has amassed an impressive body of work including incredible fashion shots, physique, underwear and body shots and creative art shots with some of the world's best photographers of the male form. I have no doubt that photographer Stephen Granger's prediction that Isaac is destined to become a supermodel will prove to be accurate, it is only a question of when.

Next Two Images from Darren Sandford

Factors weighed before deciding to shoot nude?
'Almost none actually! A lot of my friends are at odds with it, but I don’t really care enough for it to bother me, and doing nudes is very in-line with some of my personal beliefs. I think the way that sexuality and nudity are so often inherently intertwined in society is completely wrong - It’s just the human form! There is literally nothing more natural than being naked and I think this intertwined mentality - suppressing the human form as a sexual image - breeds all sort of body issues, personal sexual issues and judgements that are so detrimental to individuals and the human race. My first artistic project actually, done with a uni friend for a fine arts honours project, involved sitting around in a room of a few hundred people for a few hours while almost completely nude, then stripping down totally and briefly walking the corridors of my university. Nudity has never been something I've had issue with.'

'One thing that has astounded me actually, is that my mother is incredibly supportive of my modelling attempts. We never had a good relationship back in the day (getting along fantastic this last year, but...) and she was very uptight about, well, most things. So when I hesitantly showed her a few shots I was incredibly happy that she was so supportive! One moment will always stick in my mind; while we were looking through shoots, one Instagram photo has a comment stating that I needed a Gardner for all my bush - my mums reaction was “Oh that’s rubbish, your bush looks great!”. I almost lost it, I fell around laughing while my mind was simultaneously breaking from the ridiculousness of having ones pubes complimented, nay, defended! by your mother.'

Below: Image from EurekaMichael

What part of your body are you most happy with? What part gets the most attention from others?
'Hmm I have difficulty answering this actually… As a incredibly self-conscious child with zero self esteem I think I have grown up to learn how to appreciate the image of my overall body - not even that it looks good, but just that I look healthy and happy. From other peoples perspective, however, the abs seem to get the most love! Also the bubbly squat butt I have developed. The big hair is always a focus point, as well.'

What would your dream scenario be for a shoot?
'I would love to do some exotic place somewhere - as an avid traveller I would love to infuse travel and modelling. Perhaps meet people in some exotic place such as the beaches of Greece, the temples of India, the savannah or waterfalls of Zimbabwe or the volcanoes of Iceland and score some fantastic images.'

Next three images from William Eicholtz

Some of you may remember my posts (HERE:& HERE:) featuring the work of William E, a prominent Melbourne sculptor, William Eicholtz from last summer. I thank William for these exclusive images he sent on from his collaboration with Isaac.

'It was a pleasure to work with. We mainly did life modelling drawings, but such a lovely person and such a nice experience to just sit and ask questions about the 80’s art scene.'

'While being relatively new to modelling, Oliver was fantastic from the start. He not only has a naturally classic physique, but comes with a great attitude, open mind and really creative spirit. He is obviously totally comfortable in his own skin, but also around creative ideas and willing to put himself 110% into a project. As he is a walking classical sculpture, it wont be hard for me to create an artwork using him as the model in the very near future.'

If you could be on the cover of a magazine, which one would you choose?
'Faint, perhaps! I would be more interested in something arty, but something like Mens Health would also be an honour. Actually, the number one would be Rolling Stone! All I'm missing is some musical talent... '

Last three images from Lucas Ferrier

Isaac reports his chance to collaborate with Lucas Ferrier was tremendous luck. Ferrier was coming to Melbourne for a sporting event and was only around for a couple of days. The only shots he had up on ModelMayhem at the time were some shots taken at the boutique modeling agency, before he had really had an opportunity to gain experience as a model. Despite this, Lucas found them and even with all of the other models messaging him to collaborate, he saw something in Isaac, and the images to choose him to work with. It was the result of this shoot, and seeing the images of himself looking like a CK underwear model, that Isaac began to believe that he had more potential than he had initially realised.

'This was my second shoot ever, and I had no idea, literally, NO IDEA, how to model but Lucas Ferrier was a fantastic photographer and teacher, and at the end of it has some shots that I could scarcely believe he featured me!'

Figure Study: Isaac by macpics

I saw my first image of Isaac, the photo above taken by Ian from macpics, last December. There was something about the image that stuck with me and had me wanting to see and learn more. Isaac has such a great face with such expressive eyes, not to mention his amazing hair. There was something both modern, yet distinctly classic and timeless about the pose and angle which Ian captured.

Isaac has a bit of a 60's or 70's vibe. It is not just his beautiful shaggy blonde hair but there is also a carefree, almost spiritual feel about him. His look, along with the colors and poses Ian captured, reminded me of a blend of classic Renaissance sculpture mixed with 1950's physique photography. The visual combination, especially with the deep red contrasting Isaac hair, skin and the white of the fabric, create a series of striking visuals.

I intimately got in touch with Ian and Isaac and both were on board for a feature on the blog. Ian shares that the theme for the shoot came when he was checking out Isaac's portfolio before their shoot and one of the images of Isaac's he saw reminded him of Michelangelo's David. He then got the idea to shoot Isaac using classical statues as the inspiration for set-up and pose.

The 23 year old Melbourne Australia model says working with Ian, and recreating the classic statues was an interesting experience a lot of fun. Isaac reports that Ian brought along a few example shots and the worked with them to develop each shot and pose. Isaac has spent years working out, and experimenting with different eating plans to transform his body to look as he does today. 'It was rather flattering to be stylised as David, really!'

'Isaac was great to work with, cooperative and easy-going. He took an active part in creating poses and didn't just let me direct him. If he felt that he could do this or that better where the pose was concerned, he did, and he was the one who turned the white material into a loin-cloth. I'd never thought of doing that way, although I've tried to do something like it with other models!'

Favorite Face of the Day: Nathan Parsons

As always, I am late to the party. I was a big fan of True Blood in it's first three seasons, but my watching has been hit and miss the last few years. Because of the time I put in though, I decided to try to finish the show with HBO on Demand which allows viewers to catch every season of most of their shows. I decided to begin with the end so have been making my way through season 7, the show's last.

Maybe it is because I know the show is over, but I have been enjoying it much more than I thought, especially with one of season 7's hottest highlights, the incredibly sexy Nathan Parsons. The character of James was first introduced in the form of actor Luke Grimes, but Grimes seemed to get cold feet with the characters direction so enter the talented Parsons.

3 images above from Jim Warren

James is intrigued with Lafayette, and although they begin as friends, and blood brothers, the relationship soon takes a turn for the carnal. With most of the cast either annoying me, or already killed off, it was nice to have a character, and an actor to follow. I have never been a huge fan of Lafayette, but finally, through James' eyes, I can get the appeal. Most of characters on True Blood are a bit extreme, but Parsons keeps James planted a bit closer to the ground.

True Blood

Nathan Parsons has a great presence on screen, amazing face and hair and such incredible eyes. Parsons also has the one of the best toros on television, which is why most of the shows he appears on seem to take full advantage of. Although James and Lafayette have a few steamy scenes, True Blood surprisingly enough, kept Parsons clothes on.

General Hospital

Bunheads

The Originals

The Brotherhood V: Alumni (2009)

Like many young actors, new to the business, A David Decoteau movie is almost a right of passage. For Parson's it was 2009's The Brotherhood V Alumni. Decoteau keeps boxer brief makers in business and Parsons fill his grey ones out rather nicely.

Chiaroscuro: The Photography of Kevin Kurbs

'Light, shadow, texture, and a great model are all the things I need to create a great photo.'

Dmitry

Last week while, while looking for images for a piece I was working on, I was poking around flickr. Although Model Mayhem is a great resource, flickr also holds an immense inventory of artistry and for many, a less complicated space to store their work. As I clicked through the pages I paused when coming upon first image from Seattle photographer Kevin Kurbs. The image, in beautiful black and white, was a nod to Auguste Rodin's The Thinker.

As I browsed through Kevin's port, I was blown away with the pages and pages of breath taking black & white captures of the male form. Although Kevin did have a section for his work in color, it was clear that the artists favorte way to capture the male body, was with his beautiful focus utilizing the dramatic effects of light and shadow.

Kevin remembers that from his first viewing of a Tarzan movie as a child he was fascinated with the male form. This passion continued with all of the beautiful naked Greek and Roman sculptures that filled his art and history classes in school. Kevin began shooting as a hobby about 20 years ago. 'I had a Canon Rebel that took great shots but my creativity seem limited. About 2 years ago I upgraded to a canon 60 D with a much better lens and I saw a change in what I could do.'

Kevin credits one of his clients from Boston for pushing him to the next level. He encouraged Kevin to be less concerned with people's reactions to his work, or whether others liked it or not. Instead, Kevin was encouraged to focus on what challenged him and especially to ensure that he loved what he was shooting.

CJ

'The black and whites seem to carry my work to its simplest form, Color is great, I just love the simplicity. The term Chiaroscuro, an Italian word meaning light-dark, seems to fit my work the best.'

Dyllan

Although Kevin has editing programs, he tries to challenge himself to the best possible photo that he can in order to limit the amount of editing he has to do. It helps that Kevin shoots in a very dark studio, where the only thing lit is the model. The look and final images, as well as the process itself, can be an intimate one. The focus being on light and shadow, body and form.

Kevin does his best to make sure his models are comfortable during the entire process of the shoot. Whether it be an experienced model he connected with on Model Mayhem or a stranger who catches Kevin's eye, he approaches while on the street or out in public. Kevin clearly explains his goal and shows them a completed portfolio so they have an idea of how the finished images will appear.

Kince

'I love what I do and my passion for the male nude is expressed to each model. I want to show them in a way they have never seen themselves before. I am always fascinated when they tell me that can’t believe how great they look or they can’t believe the photos are of them.'

Curtain Down!

The final curtain came down on Fox's Glee last Friday. Like many of you, I basically left the show at intermission a few seasons ago. I have only watched two episodes this season, but still went ahead and DVDR'd the finale. There have been many articles and theories written about why the once giant hit lost it's way, and most of their audience as well. For me, the show lost it's way for two main reasons. First, when the show turned all it's half nots, the heart and core of the show, into narcissistic ass holes. There was something troubling about rooting for characters who were ostracised, and fought hard to belong, who now were exhibiting the same bullying and hurtful behaviour towards others. It was irony the producers of the show seemed to not get, or at least ignore. Most of the members of the Glee club were cable of cruelty far above what they themselves endured.

Secondly, for me the show lost my attention once the once assemble driven hour became the Kurt & Rachel show. Kurt and Rachel were both great characters, especially in the pilot. But when they were made the main leads, they became insufferable, turning two unique TV characters into self absorbed whiners. My favorite Glee characters were always on the fringe, Mercedes, Mike, Brittany, Tina and Sam. All were written off, figuratively and literally, then all came back when for small arcs from time to time, but never ones that upstage Rachel and Kurt. It was nice to see them all back in the show's finale, even thoug some, only for a few fleeting seconds at the very end. If you blinked you would missed many of the former members of the club. All that being said, I loved Glee, especially in it's first two, maybe three seasons. Glee had and impact on many viewers including myself. I was surprised that there are close to 75 posts under my Glee label on FH, beginning with my post full of LOVE for the pilot back in 2009. In-between that post and this one there were many other features, most featuring as many shirtless shots of Harry Shum Jr and Chord Overstreet I could find! I hope those posts, to continue! Thanks Glee for many enjoyable hours, especially back when you were on Tuesdays.
