Just Because: Teenage Nightmare

Although 21 year old Brazilian supermodel Muriel Vilela is no longer a teenager, it was his image I found when searching for a male model with braces. I was reminded today, while sitting in the dentist chair, of all the hours I spent as a teen in that chair when I had my own braces. I used to curse my mother for forcing me to get them, cold to the fact they sacrificed to pay for them. Braces used to be the bane of my existence when I was in Jr. High but now that I am older, not hiding my smile, it was all worth it. Muriel is an incredible looking man, but his smile really completes the amazing package.

Ohm Photography: The Sensuality In Sorrow

Sorrow:
The expression of grief, sadness, disappointment. Mental suffering or pain.

As men, we are often forced, or feel the pressure, to remain basic, meat and potatoes and the salt of the earth. We are described as tough, strong and dependable. As far as the expression of emotion, they too are most welcome when they remain basic. For many, these only include happy or angry. We can also be sad, but only briefly and only when we have experienced great loss.

Nuance within any given emotion has traditionally been reserved only for women. Men can feel them, but take a risk to actually express them. The tragedy is that the primary emotions men are allowed to express are not actually real. Happiness really only comes in waves, fleeting moments that don’t really add up to an actual sustained emotion. Anger too rises for a time, and then dissipates. Anger is permitted in men, yet like happiness is not really an emotion one can sustain. Anger is usually the expression of the more nuanced emotion, one we are not supported to unveil. Think of any angry person, and just below the skin, where the nerves lie, is someone sad, lonely, terrified or hurt. Sadly, it is anger that most boys are taught so skillfully how to outwardly appear.

My favorite images of the male form capture shades beyond and below the basic fields of male emotions. Beautiful emotional degree’s that we all experience at one time or another in our lives. Who at one time or another has not felt jealousy, desperation, loneliness, self loathing or desolation. Some of us have had brief moments, others days, others much much longer.

Photographer Ohm Phanphiroj not only captures, but encourages, welcomes and celebrates the sorrow that makes up a life lived. What gives his images such impact is in part how rare it is to observe such moments. Even with our own family, with friends and even our spouses and partners, intimacy can be often masked. Hidden, edited or tempered to meet the comfort levels of those who surround us.

The sorrow and intimacy Ohm captures is interactive, reserved for the safety of the artist and his camera. It is not surprising that so many of Ohm’s images are set in motels. Motel rooms often act as truth serums, settings far from others, far from home. Rooms which permit one to unload and purge, safe that long after you close the door behind you, your secrets will remain there, untold.

Although I love images that tell a story, I am fascinated that Ohm’s images stop before any answers are given. In each of these images, a story is presented, but each has me longing to know more about each of these men, and the experiences and pain that brought them to their present emotional state.

Ohm's images are like a preview for an upcoming motion picture. He tells you enough to draw your attention, peak your curiosity and take you to the edge. The rest of story is left unwritten, the ending, left to the viewer. My bringing up movies is intentional, as it was film making that first brought the Ohm to photography.

It was in 1997, while working on a graduate degree in filmmaking with the Oscar award winning producer, Gary Moss, that Ohm began his professional career as an artist and photographer. Considered an up-and-coming filmmaker after his work in short films, including I Wish You Were in Hell Ohm desired greater artistic control over the final product, something almost impossible to achieve in filmmaking. This desire for greater artistic control drew Ohm to photography, which he found suited his talents more than filmmaking.

'His first series “Strangers in the Night” explored non-verbal communication and nocturnal human behavior. A series of black-and-white images of highly charged nighttime activity, “Strangers in the Night” combined a cinematic style with an invitation to the viewer to explore more intimate aspects of the human psyche and human behavior.'

For me the observed behavior was a beautiful and sensual expression of sorrow or despair, but the specific emotion could be different depending on the experiences of the viewer. I love the above quote as it summed up exactly what drew me to Ohm's work. I didn't just stumble upon it, when first viewing his work, I felt he invited me in. Not completely inside mind you, but to the edge of the open doorway, near, but not in the room. Close enough to feel what was happening, to have a good view, but with enough distance not to interfere or get in the way.

I have not had the time this summer to catch So You Think You Can Dance but the last few minutes of a show last week had me realizing I should have been. Dancer Paul Karmiryan has a smile that could melt the heart of the coldest of men, and watching him on the dance floor has me searching youtube to see what I had been missing.

Not Yet Good Night John Boy

I spent some time last week getting caught up on The Americans and watching Richard Thomas on the screen had me realize that I have been watching him on screen most of my life. Thomas still looks good at 63 and it is great to see him back on the tube.

Growing up in the 80's, repeats of The Walton's used to play on my local CBS every afternoon at 4. My mother encouraged our viewing, not just because of the family content, but because it kept it us out of her hair while she made supper. Although initially a Jim Bob fan, as I got older it was John Boy who drew most of my attention. I am sure I am not the only one who found something attractive about the combo of overalls, integrity and cheek mole.

One of my favorite performances from Thomas was in Stephen King's It (1990). I still believe It to be one of the best adaptations of one of King's books.

I posted this video before, but I think besides playing a body on slab in another King adaptation, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, this is the only nudity from Thomas.

A Craving For More: Cameron by Doug Vetter

'Cameron was one of my all-time favorite models, and not simply because of his great looks. He brought an upbeat attitude, a sense of adventure, and a truly professional demeanor to our shoots; which made it easy to create some of my most well-received photographs.'

One of the natural responses to experiencing something you like is to want more. Whether it is something you eat, something you watched on television and especially with something you visualized. When I check out the stats for FH there are thousands of hits for people looking to see more of the model and celebrities they like, more of course, meaning naked. I too want to see more when I viewing an image I love, usually for me, more of the work of the photographer. Even more so however, I want to learn more.

I know some may consider the words I annoyingly insert between the purdy picture annoying or clutter just getting in the way. The images are what inspired me to start FH, the words, why I continue. Great images make me curious, about the artist, the model, the location and theme. Part of what stimulates me about some images is wondering what the experience was like for man in front of, and person behind the camera. What inspired the image, what led up to the shoot and what was going on before and after the click of the camera. If I don't instantly ask myself these questions, my eyes, and mind, quickly move off the image, then instinctively look for another that might arouse my curiosity.

I love hearing about what went into a models decision to be naked, the factors that determine why they choose to work with certain photographers and vise versa. Equally intriguing is the photographers experience and through my six years of writing the blog, the stories continue to excite me, and bring a greater depth to my appreciation of the work. To me, without the story the ability to enjoy a piece of work is on par with watching television with the sound on mute. I know a great photo can speak for itself, I just believe they can also speak louder, and most certainly longer, with story.

Doug Vetter was a photographer I did not just want on the blog, I wanted to feature his work badly. As soon as I saw his first image of Felix, (-A Window-) I was anxious and excited to put the story together and share it with those who enjoy the blog. The combination of an exquisitely beautiful model, talented artist and stunning location combined together to create everything I usually look for with a profile.

When revisiting Doug's work, my eyes darted back to the house and barn that were so central in Doug's work with Felix. There was a magical quality about the structure, the lighting and the way Doug shot it, that makes it the perfect spot to shoot the male form. Within the house this time was Cameron. With Cameron's incredible body, beautiful skin, freckles and patch of red, my affinity for redheads kicked into full gear. Doug Vetter, aroused my curiously yet again, and brilliantly satisfied it with story.

My first shoot with Cameron was on the same day as my first shoot with Felix. An artist/photographer friend of mine, Bob Worthy set up a cooperative shoot with both models at a location near his home that features an abandoned house and old barn. We took turns working with each model individually. When it was my turn to work with Cameron, I was immediately impressed by his great physique, striking ginger coloring, and easy smile. He also has a spectacular fish tattoo in his right side, which was inked on by a friend of his who was actually just learning the process. Cameron was completely at ease even though it was his first time posing nude.

We got some great shots almost immediately using setups similar to those I had been using with Felix inside the abandoned house. My second turn with Cameron took place in the old barn, and we were able to get some nicely textured shots using a combination of daylight filtering in supplemented by flash bounced off a sheet, which required some experimentation. Cameron was extremely patient and good-natured during the entire process. We finished up the day’s shooting in Bob’s lap pool, which was a nice finish to a warm September afternoon. That day working with Cameron and Felix remains the most amazingly productive photo shoot I have ever been a part of.

Cameron agreed to come to my home studio a few months later for a follow-up shoot. He traveled all the way from Richmond to Manassas (over 80 miles) on a scooter-style motorcycle on a cold December day and arrived chilled to the bone. After a few minutes and some hot coffee, he was ready to go. We had decided on a “red” theme for our studio shoot, so I had a new backdrop and some props on hand. Cameron was just as good natured and at ease as on our first shoot, and working with him was a distinct pleasure. We got a nice variety of shots before he had to get back on the road so he could return to Richmond before it started to get dark.

In addition to photographing incredible men, Hans Fahrmeyer is also a master of visual combination. Hans loves to fuse together images and themes, creating composites and collages telling more of a story. Each individual image tells us something about the couple, but all together we are voyeurs to even more of the relationship.

DirtRoad: To The Woodshed!

'My own skin fits better than the latest fashions.'

Traditionally, heading to the woodshed was not something that ended positively. Usually, it meant you did something perceived as bad or wrong. The woodshed, a place further away, darker, where your punishment could be doled out without the aid of witnesses to see and hear your cries of pain.

There were no punishments when Warren Russell (DirtRoad) headed to the old barn, instead, a visual reward. Some of my favorite images are ones that skillfully weaving model with environment and I love how DirtRoad was able to visualize his subject within the location, and proceed to captured it.

Location shoots often stimulate my imagination differently that studio work as I love the increased depth within images that also include the connection between model and the environment that surrounds them. In this series, DirtRoad fools us a bit as there is more to the images that simply the beauty of the male form shot outside. I love the incredible umbrella shots, sensual with a distinct feel that rain in fact, had just ended. The erotic beginning however starts to turn more than a little sinister when you look at others in the series. Looking at the models face, into his eyes and around the abandoned structure. It becomes a distinct possibility the axe he is so firmly gripping, might have been used for more than just chopping wood.

What makes the images even more interesting and special to me is that the beautiful naked man with the axe, was completely alone in that barn. Warren Russell(DirtRoad) not only held the axe and umbrella, he also controlled the camera. .

'I’ve always been the artistic type. I model because I enjoy it. I’d rather go for a walk barefoot in the forest than see the sights in the city. When it comes to modeling, I would rather make people feel something than want to buy something. Keep it natural, keep it real. Steer away from the consumerism and appreciate what’s really there.'

Warren first got into modeling when he returned home from his honeymoon and found out he no longer had a job. Although he quickly found a job, it had far fewer hours, so to make the difference, he scoured Craigslist for odd jobs to do on the side. Warren says he saw a number of modeling opportunities, but that he needed pictures in order to apply.

'I didn't want to waste time doing trade so headed to the woods with my gorilla pod and digital camera. I was able to get some good gigs out of the photos. I found that I enjoy shooting myself because I'm more concentrated on the composition of the picture than the modeling. It's tedious working with a self timer, but through trial and error I took some shots I really love.'

One of the things Warren did during the time was salvage antique windows from abandoned houses. One winter, he came upon a collection of abandoned houses. Although it was cold and sleeting, while in the barn, he stripped down and began shooting. One might think the scope of vision is more narrow when shooting oneself, my experience is that it widens. When some photographers shoot the male form, many focus strictly on the body, or simply body parts. With Warren's images, the body is of course important, but instead of being the sole focus, it becomes a nexus, creatively connecting to and with, all that surrounds it.

The Canadian Cousin

Although is first professional role was in 2005 in Cheaper By The Dozen 2, it was just last week I was introduced the beautiful Robbie Amell. While flicking the dials, I stopped on Hot In Cleveland, a show I usually choose to skip. The cast is appealing enough, but for some reason I groan, more than laugh, at the little I have seen. But a brief scene with Valerie Bertinelli being romanced by a young doctor (Amell) had be sticking through the entire 30 minutes.

It is funny that sometimes when you see an actor, you suddenly see them everywhere. After the sit-com, it seemed Amell was everywhere, especially in the promo's for the upcoming CW series The Tomorrow People. The series, which premieres in October, follows a group of people with special powers. CW is scheduling the show to follow Arrow in the fall.

This will mean we will two hours of Amell Anatomy come Autumn. Although born in Michigan, Robbie spent much of his childhood in Toronto where his cousin Stephen Amell (Arrow) also lived and worked. The CW has been a good landing strip from actors coming down north of the border and The Tomorrow People looks like a vehicle which could propel another Amell into the spotlight.

'I'm just a small all self-taught newcomer, but I try to reach a High standard within my work.'

Although photographer Igor Menezes may be a newcomer, his finished images have a powerful impact and look as if they were captured by a seasoned professional. The Stuttgart/Ludwigsburg artist has a focus on fashion, fitness and portrait photography. The first image of Igor's was the eye catching image, directly above of Chris. The image immediately grabbed by attention due to Igor's use of lighting, it's strong composition and vibrant colors.

The photographer's shoot was inspired by The 4th of July. Although not American, Igor has a love of American Culture and thought he would love to do a themed shoot and tried to keep it on a more Editorial, and not to costumie.

'I was just amazed by Chris! I did a shoot the week before that was really disappointing and was quite uninspired to do another test-shoot that day. As soon as Chris came to set he had a great energy pulled me up and was just inspiring! In person he is not just a really attractive model, but the camera loves him. When he captures the light it is just like magic. He also follows instruction very well! In addition to that he did come out of his comfort zone and tried some poses just like I wanted and at the end, we did not only had a great test shoot but also 3 beautiful short series of amazing images. You would never know that he is "just" a newcomer model with little experience. A professional guy with a great attitude and an amazing body!'
