Stand Out: Derrek By YogaBear Studio

With all the models on Model Mayhem, it sometimes takes something big in order to stand out above the crowd. Derrek is with out a doubt a stand out and I have been enjoying and following his work with many of my favorite photographers for quite awhile now. Derrek is a natural in front of the camera, and clearly accustomed to drawing the attention of those around him. With over eight years of acting and theatre experience, the 20 years old model from Santa Cruz has a strong and solid presence in front of the camera.

Derrek says modeling is a motivator to keep himself healthy and continue going to the gym. He has the ability to take on many moods and looks and a quick glance at his Model Mayhem profile shows a model both versatile and fearless. On a recent visit to the Bay Area, one of my favorite photographers to profile, David Gray from YogaBear Studio recently spent some time shooting with Derrek.

In addition to his images, one of the reasons I love and respect David's work so much is his innate ability to seek out, capture and celebrate the beauty in all of the men he photographs. David is not interested in using his camera to create, edit or manipulate beauty within an image. Beauty is secondary to capturing the core elemental essence of the men he shoots.

When I recently profiled David's work, I featured his iimages of Samuel both on a train and on a mountain. In his work with Derrek, he returned to the studio with classical poses and a focus on capturing Derrek's face, personality and extraordinary physique.

I always question photographers who appear to only capture men of the moment. By this I mean models who currently have whatever look, hair color or body type deemed acceptable by the masses. Although there is nothing wrong with it, they are shooting for others, an audience, and not necessarily for themselves. David Gray, like most of the photographers I choose to cover on FH, shoot men who intrigue, stimulate and interest the artist themselves. When this is the case, we know the person behind the lens believes in what is in front of it. The risk becomes that it ceases to become art, and simply becomes a job. When shooting what your passionate about, images become intensely more beautiful, interesting and most of all, personal to those who view them.

His first acting job in Hollywood happened the year I was born, his last the year I turned five. His career was not a long one, nor was it very memorable, yet it still, it deserves a nod. So many dream of making it in show business yet so few actually do. I have to wonder if it is worse never to get your big break, or to get it, and have it crash and burn so quickly.

Above: With Walter Matthau in Casey's Shadow (1978)

I had never heard of actor Steve Burns until last week. I purchased a large box of old magazine at a flea market and at the bottom of the pile, under the Newsweek's, Entertainment Weekly's and Premiere Magazine's were a few Tiger and Teen Beats from the late 70's. Near the back of one was the pin-up of Steve at the top of this post. So 70's sexy with his wavy hair and of course as was required in most teen mags at the time, shirtless in jeans.

Above: In the mini-series Centennial (1978)

My research came up with very little on the adorable shirtless Steve and his far too short five year career. His six credits on IMDB also included Lifeguard (1976) and a guest stint on The Incredible Hulk. If one were to determine from those few teen magazines in the box, one would have assumed Steve was a big star at the time. Then again, according to those same magazines, the biggest star ever was Leif Garrett... Anyone have any info on Steve or what he might be up to these days?

I Wanna Be A Honcho Man!

Up until my twenties, when I finally had my own Internet account in the mid nineties, I would have considered my self a bit of virgin when it came to gay culture. I live in a small town in a rural area and with the exception of Playgirl, (which back then was still pretending to be a 'women's magazine')I really had no clue or experience with gay themed images, art, books or movies. My computer, followed by e-bay, Amazon and the world, opened my eyes, and my wallet, to a world beyond the small town I lived in. It is hard for some to understand that until the net, there were many of us who really had no idea how large the community really was.

I am still learning about many of the things I missed. This past June, I was looking for some old ads for my post Under Where The research for that piece resulted in me saving many images and discovering many magazines I had never heard of before. I profiled the first, Butt Magazine, last month.

Some of the ads I saved from that first post had 'Honcho Magazine' typed in small letters at the bottom of the page so I had to find out more! Like Butt, I had never seen, nor heard of Honcho until researching the piece. Honcho served up it's first issue on April 1978 and it's last just about thirty years later on November 2009.

The appearance of many of the models and layouts in Honcho are interesting to me. Many remind me of members of the Village People as many of the posts are almost butch themed by connecting gay men with traditional masculine stereotypes like cops and cowboys. It appears to be a deliberate attempt to push the envelope and push the boundaries, especially during the late 70's and 80's.

It is amazing how far we have grown as I am sure there were many people who would have been appalled 30 years ago at gay men as police officers or fire fighters. The style and look of the magazine seems beautifully dated and although not everything I saw during my research was my taste, but I loved how the magazine seemed to have a 'fuck you' attitude, something I am sure was needed to make it into the magazine stores at the time. Playgirl's covers were usually tame and more of a tease tease, but Honcho's sexual nature was in your face, loud and powerful. Something I am sure was very much needed at the time.

It is interesting to me, and maybe also a little sad, that in Honcho, looking natural is much more closely connected to sexual desire than it is today. Today, models and images seem more generic and targeted to a specific audience. Being organically sexual is now not enough, and more often than not, airbrushed and photo shopped to a point of impotence.

Weekend Warrior: Tom by Keith Ingram Photo

'The greatest compliment someone can give me is to gaze at one of my photographs for longer than 3 seconds.'

Photographer Keith Ingram's choice of the word gaze nailed precisely what happened when I came upon his images with Tom. To gaze means to look intently with great curiosity, interest, pleasure or wonder. It goes beyond just glancing, and even beyond staring. It reflects not just the time allotted that one devotes to an image, but as well the connecting emotion.

I was instantly taken with this set from Keith. There is an ethereal quality about Tom, his facial features and fine hair and tight, fit physique. It is almost as if my Legolas fantasy came to life, and like the fictional Legolas, Tom also appears to be a fierce fighter.

San Francisco based freelance photographer Keith Ingram has lived nearly half his life on both coasts of the U.S. Originally from New York, Keith studied film making at New York University, then spent most of his adult life working and pursuing his creative interests in California. He has worked in independent film/video production for nearly 15 years, and has honed his portraiture skills via wedding and corporate in-house promotional photography.

His passion for male physique portraiture stemmed from his early appreciation of the classic beefcake photos of the 1940's and 50's, coupled with the "life-changing" influence of late 80's era Bruce Weber. "O Rio de Janeiro and Bear Pond were ground breaking monographs! High end coffee table books devoted exclusively sexy males were not as common back then as they are today" says Keith; 'When I picked up Bear Pond and flipped through it at my local Barnes and Noble, I knew right then and there that that was what I wanted to do with my camera.'

Never really attracted to the high pressure, highly competitive world of commercial photography, Keith likes to think of himself as a "weekend warrior" photographer, who enjoys a laid back attitude of shooting who he wants and when he wants with no editorial deadline to meet. He has built a considerable 'body' of work, of which he has occasionally exhibited in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. At his very first group show, Keith ended up selling one of his male nude figure studies which was a great source of encouragement to continue!

Keith took a break from photography for a few years, and now says he's back with a vengeance, shooting in a fresh style, and updating his MM portfolio. 'I feel like beginner all over again and I'm working to re-establish my online presence'. Currently MM is the only online showcase for his work, but a new blog or website are in the works as well as working on self-publishing his first book of male physique portraits.

'I connected with Tom, a young martial-artist from northern California a few years back, and at the time, he was just starting out and open to any type of style as long as it presented his athletic form tastefully. I was more then happy to accommodate! - Even though I am the director of the shoot, and I know what type of photos I want to see in my portfolio, I like to treat the model like a client - I always ask " how would you like to you see yourself portrayed?". Establishing a comfort level is very important when your model has only known you for half an hour before he has to start stripping for your camera.'

'Tom had very long, baby-fine hair, and of course our location turned out to be the windiest spot in the city. I kept thinking about Ansel Adams and his "decisive moment". I kept waiting for that 1/125 sec window for the wind to die down long enough to get a good shot - I was still shooting on film back then, so I prayed that these shots were usable! We were laughing about the strong wind all throughout the shoot. I like making my models laugh. It would've been a crime to not capture his great long hair.

Once we got back to my studio, things didn't get much better. I had terrible lighting problems that day, and I had him standing in front of a black backdrop. Once again, his hair was the issue - I couldn't get a good highlight on him, so the shadows really overpowered his beautiful hair! Luckily, his physique more then made up for it. I think my shoot with Tom really captured the essence of why I do what I do. I captured moments from a fun afternoon in the life of a young guy just starting on his creative journey.'

'My portraits are a celebration of the male mystique in all of its wonderful diversity and complexity. My favorite photos are the ones where my camera asks "who are you?" and the subject responds with "you tell me!'

Swamp Thing by Robert J Guttke

In my last post featuring Robert J. Guttke's blog Exquisite Pain, three beautiful, and completely naked models, were scaling the walls of the old ammunition factory in order to pose, dangerously high in the air on a thin beam jutting out from the structure. Today, the location may be a bit safer, but no less of an adventure. Robert J. Guttke should be shooting the Stade Rugby Calendars. His images, EPIC, and I would kill to see the video with all the behind the scenes work and stories that go along with the final photographs. I will begin the story here, but head on over to EXQUISITE PAIN to finish the journey.

'Dressed in shorts, fisherman waders, camera bag slung over shoulder, and dosed with layers of mosquito repellent we trudged across the mud flats, threading through cattails and thick reeds, around decomposing stumps and headed for the island. Low clouds would break with multiple shafts of Biblical light adding to the humid, atavistic atmosphere. At one point the shorts chaffed the model so much that he ripped them off. Thus the journey became the start of the photo session...'

'If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what is the significance of a clean desk?'

Sometimes sparse and organized is nice. It is certainly easier and less difficult to maintain and control. Other times however, it can be a bit monotonous and sterile. I consider clutter (not mess, clutter) a sign of a life lived and the clutter, badges of experiences gained.

After all, Sexxx Sells...
Skyylerhouse

Life has a clear and distinct rhythm and I believe the most successful people are the ones able to keep in sync with what is going on around them. When someone is struggling, in any area of their life really, it is usually because they can't seem to keep up with the beat that is pulsating in, and all around them. Even when you can't see it, it it is there and can be felt. Talented artists can make you feel it, even within a still, and silent image.

The best musicians have an intrinsic ability to connect with the rhythm and pulse of life and transferring it through their music. It has been my experience many photographers who are also musicians, have the ability to translate this movement, the throbbing beat within their imagery. Don't ask me exactly how, but when spending time with the work of photographer DeRon Chris Reed, aka Skyylerhouse, there is a powerfully erotic and palpable energy.

As a child DeRon Chris Reed had an immediate attraction to fashion, music and images that made a statement. Paying special attention to album covers, styling, imaging, photography and art direction he began to develop a strong eye.

Collecting vinyl records of his favorite musical artists he, a singer himself, honed his passion into a record deal and has performed at numerous events. However, it was his stunning looks and runway physic (as you can see from the first two images at the top of this post) that put him in demand as a model booking such campaigns as Vapor Air, Canvas Rags and March Michard among other notable clients including a feature in Playgirl magazine.

Although still highly in demand in front of the camera, DeRon has parlayed his talents and visual genius into photography. "You can't model until you're 100 years old, but you can take pictures forever" Says Reed. DeRon has developed a style of image taking which channels his own pure passions and energy for the craft into a style that's instantly recognizable. An expression in detail, with a sharp, bold, intense look through the eyes and energy of the man behind the lens.

Whenever I profile a photographer who also models, it is interesting to see the difference and parallels between what they present in front of the lens, and their vision when behind it. LeRon has been shot by many famous photographers, including one of my favorites, Zedneram. I love that as an photographer, LaRon is able to capture and bring out the same raw erotic energy that he exudes so beautifully as a model.

Basting The Bird

In Canada, Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate the harvest and other blessings which have occurred over the past year. There are however, noticeable differences between the Canadian celebration and the American one. First off, the date. In Canada, the turkey is stuffed and basted in the middle of October. I was not however aware of the naked traditions associated with the Canadian celebration.

I have not strutted around naked in front of my grandmother since I was 4, but I guess I will have to give it a try this year. Now Justin Bieber doesn't really have enough meat on his bones to wet my appetite, but there are other Canadians that I wouldn't mind observing partaking in the tradition. Lets hope this October, the disgruntled cousins of Canadian hotties Ryan Gossling, Dillon Cassey, Evan Williams, Sebastian Pigott, and Shawn Robersts have their cell phones handy.

What do they put in the stuffing?

Stop Believing?

Up until last year, I would have considered Glee my favorite how. This makes my 64th post about the show since the pilot and it is the only scripted show that I have a side label for on the blog. I lost my love for Glee midway through last season and the last 9 episodes sit unwatched, soon to be deleted, on my DVR.

Last season it felt like the writers and producers gave a big fuck you to promises it made from the first scene of the first show. In the beginning, Glee was about finding your tribe, outcasts, misfits finding a place to belong and be accepted. It introduced us to characters not seen widely on television. The students at McKinley High were made up of teens who were black, white, Asian, Hispanic, overweight, handicapped, gay and transgendered and a faculty just as diverse and quirky. Viewers connected to these students and watching Glee was like connecting with others like them.

Not anymore. Most of the diversity has been moved to the sidelines. The Asians continue to be underwritten, the wheelchair bound Artie remains generally in the background, the freakishly talented Mercedes shipped away and barely seen. The overweight Lauren rarely seen and the wonderful Coach Beiste only sporadically thrown in.

Last season, Glee abandoned the outcasts and put it's spotlight on the popular crowd. The Glee Club, once a wonderful group of diversity, now looks like a room about to cast for the next Abercrombie and Fitch catalog. Except for the ironically named Unique, the written off Glee cast members have all been replaced by less talented, although hot, but generic looking models. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Blake, Jacob, Chad and Dean (in NYC) but their rise to leads spotlights a blatant dishonesty in what the producers once claimed the core of the show was.

The four graduates the show chose to focus on in NYC were the popular, thin and all but one white. Their popularity brought them more storyline, more airtime and more success. Exactly, what Mr. Schuester told them all the last three season would NOT happen. The loss of Cory Monteith only cements my feelings about the show. Although I will watch the how the show handles his departure, Monteith was one of the characters that remained true to who he was when we first met him. Good looking, but not too good looking, talented but not crazy talented, popular but not without his struggles. The ending of high school was not easy for Finn and out of the four the show gave attention to, his journey was the most interesting to watch. Rachael and Kurt to me are wonderful characters when a part of an ensemble cast, but as leads they often verge on obnoxious. We were told not to stop believing, yet somewhere between seasons 3 and 4, the show certainly did.

'Don't be yourself - be someone a little nicer.'
~Mignon McLaughlin

As human beings, it is shocking to me how often we forget the human part. We look at other parts of the world and judge how much better we are. So many Americans are currently 'outraged' but what is going on in Russia even though there were political candidates in our own country spouting similar hate filled views in the only a few short years ago. For decades, the ability to have power and control over others were personality traits many sought. Being kind and pleasant, and caring about others, were considered traits of the weak.

The truth is, regardless of who is charge politically, it is up to the individual to decided that treating others kindly, with respect and without judgement, is an important way to live one's life. It is choice really, and not always easy in a world that challenges and taught people to be hurtful on a regular basis. Because of how I grew up, the experiences I went through and the pain I witness, I made a conscious decision, somewhere around the age of 17 or 18, that there would be no room for cruelty in my adult life.

It is not easy, friends, co-workers, family and Internet make it hard at times. Slashing others down has become the norm in many places especially forums and message boards which seem to almost cheer and reward those that can make the cruelest and catties comments. I have written before that one of the reasons I began FH was as an alternative to sites and blogs whose primary focus was trash, slash, out, cut down and spit out the subjects they were writing about. Kindness therefore, has become a trait that I not only admire, but one I find incredibly attractive in others.

So why, on FH am I lecturing on the importance of kindness? Well, because kindness in humanity are not really themes commonly seen in the capturing of the male form. It doesn't seem that many photographers, nor the audience for their work, see it as a trait that worthy of documenting. When capturing the male nude, many seem to try to remove any sign of emotion or humanity with models often looking a little robotic. So often the desired look is either one of power or submission. With submission, the face is often blank or vapid; with power, it emotes full of snarls with eyes expression their desire to dominate. These images can be great, but the stereotypical facial expressions don't come close to capturing all of the emotions that are involved with being a man.

When I first profiled the work of photographer Jay from Unlimited Male, I wrote that my favorite images were the ones that capture the essence of the man in front of the lens, not the ones who attempt to hide or cover it. In that post (Grin), I was initially and instantly drawn to the images because of the model's incredibly grin. Jay so naturally captures his models, bringing out their personalities and the essence at their core that makes them special. Jay also manages to but his models at ease, capturing lighter moments that many others seem to ignore when shooting. With these images of Daniel, I believe one of his sexiest features is his humanity, a sweet kindness which literally seems to shine from every one of his images.

'Modeling isn't a job, it's a gift sent from God and I am going to enjoy every moment that I am blessed with. You will not find a model that is more easygoing, energetic or passionate as myself. I love what life has given me and don't hold anything back because life is not guaranteed tomorrow. Live life to it's fullest and great things will come your way.'

I was instantly drawn to Daniel's face and smile. Confident, but not cocky, welcoming and real. This made the rest of the package even more adorable and hot. Through Jay's images, Daniel seems so naturally comfortable and at ease in front of the camera, happy to share his joy, and his incredible body, with those that enjoy viewing. Most impressive, is how he does this with little to no ego. This naturalness, beautifully captured by Jay, is incredibly sexy, not to mention extremely rare. Jay says although he still feels he has a lot to learn, he is grateful for all the models he has worked with who help him to gain experience, improving with each shoot. I think Jay may already have found his niche. His natural ability to capture his models relaxed and not afraid to smile and show joy is already setting him apart.

'Danny is definitely one of the nicest, most easygoing models that I have had the priviledge to work with. Very down to earth, no ego at all and I hope to work with him again in the future.'
