Goode Again

When I was first introduced to Downton Abbey in 2010, I was captivated. I loved the look, the feel and music and watched each episode numerous times mostly because I was totally obsessed with the love affair of Matthew and Mary. There was such powerful chemistry between Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery and show certainly made them earn their eventual marriage.

When Dan Stevens, not to mention original cast members Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil) and Siobhan Finneran (O'Brien) left the show during, and at the end of, the show's third season, my interest fell dramatically. I no longer watched right away, and skipped through much of it on my DVR. Yes, Maggie Smith still entertained and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) still had my heart, but the magic that initially grabbed me with Mary and Matthew was gone.

Last night's PBS broadcast had that interest surge back, and surge back hard. I have loved Matthew Goode since first noticing him in A Single Man, and have enjoyed him every time he shows up on screen. Goode has an amazing gift to illicit chemistry with almost all of his co-stars. Last season on The Good Wife, he had it with Julianna Margulies, even after years of people rooting for her character to end up with Josh Charles. Like Dan Stevens, Charles left his show and his character was killed off. On Downton Abbey, Goode has the same seemingly impossible task with Dockery, but the chemistry, and sexual tension between Mary and Goode's Henry Talbot is incredibly strong. I am glad the show found an actor strong enough to give Mary a good ending and although I still miss Matthew, with the show going off the air after this season, it was time to move on.

Complementary Colors: Nizar M by macpics

'With Ian knowing that I'm no shy guy when it comes to bearing skin and me knowing his love for the genre, It was natural that our collaboration consisted of nude and erotic photos.'

Complementary colors are basically colors, that go well together, colors, that when placed next to one other, create the strongest contrast. They are also colors, that appear directly opposite each other in the color spectrum. That is why people generally don't think it's wise to pair green with turquoise green, blue with purple or red with pink. It is thought, colors too closely aligned don't blend well together visually.

Of course we all know that isn't always the case. Whether two things, color in particular, work well together is how they're worn, the shades they come in, and creativity of the person blending them. I would consider photographer macpics and model Nizar M to be close together when it comes to their goals. Both love to create dynamic, erotic and uninhibited imagery. One loves to shoot skin, the other has no issue baring it. So, like the red and pink used within the shoot, they may not be traditionally complementary, their artistic alliance worked beautifully together.

Nizar shares that he and Ian (macpics) had been in contact through Model Mayhem for over a year, and both appreciated each others work. Given they both live in two different hemispheres, Nizar in Belgium, Ian in Australia, they never had the opportunity to work together. When Nizar had the opportunity to fly down under for his studies, he quickly contacted Ian to let him know he was heading to Melbourne.

Model and photographer got together the morning after Nizar had flown into Melbourne. They began with shoot outdoors, partly as Ian's way to show Nizar a little bit of Melbourne before heading back to Ian's studio for the remainder of the shoot. If you have seen my previous pieces featuring Nizar's images, (Both Sides Now / Tell Me Your Stories) you will know he has no issues exposing his body and soul.

Despite his experience doing erotic shoots, Ian shares that Nizar wasn't cocky, in fact he seemed a little a shy at first, but once they got to know each other, that quickly passed. Ian says the shoot's fun mostly stemmed from Nizar, who had a great sense of humour and who had him laughing through much of their time together. I chose some of my favorite shots from their time together for this piece, but you can much on Ian's tumblr HERE:

'The shoot was a little bitter-sweet for me because we only had a limited opportunity to shoot together. Nizar had a busy week, so we had to make the best of our time together. I'd love to get the chance to shoot with him again in order to develop and expand on the the many idea's I had wanted to explore. It was amazing though and a great boost to my ego that when he was planning his trip, he remembered I lived there and wrote to be before his arrival to plan a shoot. I believe I was the only photographer in Australia who got the opportunity to work with him!'

FaVorite FiVe: Jimmy Garoppolo

With a close loss to The Pittsburgh Steelers, The New England Patriots didn't get the opportunity to defend their Super Bowl win from last year. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing Jimmy Garoppolo hit the field.

Tom Brady gets the lion's share of attention, but there is another Patriot, and another quarterback stealing a bit of his thunder. Someone behind choosing players for the team certainly has an eye for hottness and Garoppolo oozes sex appeal from head, and his sexy smile, to toe. (and every inch in between) I think Brady should keep an eye out over his shoulder, as Garoppolo is right on his tail...

White Robes & Brick Walls: Nigel by John G Reed

'One does not usually walk up to a wild animal and request they show their better side...'

The first time I featured the work of Montreal model Nigel Maldon was in 2014 when I featured his work with photographer Chris Teel. (Auld Lang Syne) When checking out that story in preparation for writing this one I was struck by some by a couple of things. First, I must have been feeling a little bit melancholy as I wrote the piece, something I think we all go through at times, especially during the dead of winter.

I noted that piece that it was the 9000th story I had put together for FH since it's inception in the fall of 2007. For some reason I was struck by not just the number of posts, but the number of photographers and models I have connected with over the course of working on the site. One of those photographers was Chris of course, a photographer whose work I have been fortunate to have been able to showcase many many time.

As I check out my stats, White Robes & Brick Walls brings the post count close to 11,000, a # I should reach in May. It also mark's my second time featuring the work of photographer John G Reed, an artist I first featured this past December with Comings & Goings and John's work with model KC Chappo.

I was first drawn to John's work when seeing his work with Claudiu a couple of years ago and have been checking out his portfolio consistently since. When I first profiled John, one of the things he said he loved so much about focusing on the male form was the collaboration he enjoys with the models he shoots. John primarily had been shooting wildlife, and although I am sure there was connection with his subjects, you can't exactly give direction, or bounce off concepts with a snowy owl.

John's comments struck me as they speak to why I have continued to work on FH for so long. I am surrounded by people and their problems for 10 and 12 hours a day. Part of the reason I started blogging was as a bit of a creative escape. A place to channel my creativity as well as combining my love of writing, photography and of course the male form.

One of the things that surprised me is that although FH began as an independent pursuit, it slowly became very collaborative and it is those collaborations with models and photographers, that has motivated to continue. I am hoping this is the second of many future pieces featuring John's work.

I love the beautifully straight forward and squeaky clean concept for John's set of images with Nigel. Wash, relax, repeat. We have all had the experience of stepping out of a hot shower into a warm and welcoming bathrobe. There is something both comforting and erotic about the feel of clean, wet skin against the soft material that covers. You can almost feel, and even smell, the material of the robe that first covers, and then uncovers Nigel's beautiful body.

Nigel's body and look have attracted attention from many photographers including John, who first spotted Nigel's images in a Model Mayhem POTD contest. John sent him an e-mail and they were able to connect for a shoot for the next time Nigel was visiting Toronto. John describes Nigel as very relaxed with a wonderful confidence and sense of himself.

Photographer and model spent several hours working on a number of different sets and John really enjoyed the collaborative effort that produced this series of images. On the drive to the studio, Nigel shared that yoga helps keep him in shape. He proved his point by utilizing his hard word in several of poses that John beautifully captured during their shoot together.

Anders Holm in Top Five

I was originally going to categorize this piece under my unconventional hunks label. But... writer and actor Anders Holm is not really unconventional looking, he is simply a hot. He plays quirky, oddball characters, but no matter what character he is playing, or how much he contorts his face, he can't really hide how incredibly sexy he is.

I was reminded of how much I loved Anders when recently seeing his adorable face in previews for the new film, How To Be Single. I loved that face during his run on The Mindy Project and his role as actor and writer on Workaholics. When researching Ander's other projects for this piece, I came upon a write up for a certain scene in the 2014 Chris Rock film, Top Five. The scene involved his character's love of ass play, and the reluctant participation of his girlfriend, played by Rosario Dawson.

Now Ander's is no stranger to showing his ass, it has been on display, (and featured on FH:) a few times on Workaholics. The scene in Top Five however seemed to require a little bit more, and the comical ending, a hot, very hot, conclusion to both the scene, and the two characters relationship. I found the film, and capped the hilarious and sexy scene below. One of these days, I will get around to watching the rest of the movie...

My goal with FH is to post each and every day. Due to my job, my social life and time constraints, that doesn't always happen. But... when planning out my week of posts, I usually end up choosing the man who is going to be featured on each day's Birthday post. Although I didn't post yesterday, I wanted to share three of the images I chose for birthday boy Robert Wagner who turned 86 on February 10th.

Wagner with Tony Curtis and Rock Hudson

I was never a huge fan of Wagner, and have never seen a second of Hart to Hart. It wasn't until recently, watching him TCM and seeing a young Wagner in some of his supporting film roles that I began to appreciate his talent, and his beauty. My favorites being A Kiss Before Dying and The War Lover. The first image I saved came from Vanity Fair on-line and features Robert buffing up his 1947 Cadillac convertible. The second, features Robert on a ladder along with Tony Curtis and Rock Hudson. The third is a still of a shirtless Wagner (and a young Peter Graves) from 1953's Beneath the 12-Mile Reef.

Body Slam: Ryan by Peek Physique

$

'Ryan was a professional wrestler --the kind of wrestling with capes and masks and all that jazz. I saw him pictured on flyers with the other combatants and he always stood out with his boyish good looks.'

A well crafted sentence can tell a complete story, and photographer Tom Willard's first sentence to me about his introduction to Ryan certainly did just that. Wrestling can conjure up a variety of visuals, depending on your personal experiences, and when and where you grew up. For many, thoughts go to junior high school matches, acne covered bodies in singlets wrestling on floor mats until the gym teacher blows their whistle or slams the mat.

For others, wrestling is all about pomp and circumstance, huge arena's, loud music and loud crowds, Vince Mcmahon and those capes and masks that Tom mentioned in his quote. This, is really the only experience of wrestling that I remember. We didn't have a wrestling team in my school, not that I knew of anyway. My only connection to wrestling on floor mats was watching movies like Vision Quest and Going To The Mat.

My older brother watched wrestling, and he and friends would watch it in our rec room on Saturday mornings. I often joined them, not because I liked wrestling, but because I wanted to feel apart of the group, and not stand out for my non-interest. I would rather have been watching cartoons, but when your a kid, knowing already that you're different, any time you can blend brings an welcomed sense of safety.

I remember in the early 90's my father took my brother and I, and several of his friends to a local hockey stratum to see Wrestlemania. There was an excitement being there live, not to mention seeing two men wearing so little and so physically intertwined. It was an odd sensation seeing so many people, men and women of all different ages so caught up in such a sweat driven, and over the top soap opera.

The highlight of night for me had to be the appearance of The Undertaker, ascending from his coffin about 10 feet from where we were seated. His body glistening with sweat and spray, his muscles, his long stringy hair and theatrical walk and attitude. He won of course, but that's not what stuck out to me most. I remember looking around at all of those faces of the people around me. All so engaged in the fight, so energized and excited. I remember wondering why I was so disinterested in everything going on and why all of these people were so into something that seemed so silly to me.

This was the last time that I watched wrestling, in person or on television. My need to be included was no longer as strong as my desire to pursue my own interests. That doesn't mean I gave my interest in wrestlers. There is still something very raw and erotically charged about a competition that brings two men so physically close together, sweaty and intertwined.... especially if they ooze the raw sexual appeal that Ryan does.

'Ryan came over to my studio and we got a number of different shots using various locations and lighting set-ups. I don't understand photographers who do a shoot and all the pictures end up looking the same. Use different locations. Move the lights around. Shoot from down on the floor. Ask the models to bring a various clothing items. Use props!'

Tom and Ryan shot three times together, the first and third, featured in this piece. At the first shoot, Tom describes Ryan as quiet and reserved, but Tom, given his deafness, says this is not uncommon for him during a shoot. Tom always tell the models that although he may not be able to carry on much of back and forth conversation, he is a talker and likes to chat and give feedback while working.

'Ryan seemed to have a Superman kind of thing going on. I could easily see him cast in the role of the iconic hero or his alter ego, Clark Kent. Aside from the fact that you'd probably get sued by the Superman people, you could probably get some nice pictures of Ryan in and out of the Superman uniform.'

During his first time in front of Tom's camera, although he was naked during the shoot, Ryan remained mostly covered, putting the white towel he was holding to good use. Ryan felt it was a good idea to leave a little to the viewers imagination. Given it was their first time working together, Tom respected Ryan's boundaries and felt they came up with some really hot images for Ryan's port.

A couple of months later, when Ryan showed up for his second shoot. Any nerves Ryan had the first time seemed to have totally disappeared. This time, a more buffed up Ryan, left that white towel on the floor and exhibited a confidence in front of the camera, deciding this time to leave nothing to the viewers imagination. As incredibly hot as Ryan looks wearing nothing, I cannot help but still be a bit curious about those cape and mask shots...

Todd Mane (Tim Carlton)
Playgirl: 1998 & 2000

It might be that Playgirl model Todd Mane grew his locks so long to help keep him warm during those long Canadian winters, but either way it works for him. Todd's hair, and his overall look sort of sums up the 90's, the 90's in Playgirl in particular.

The dirk bike rider has also done a few on-line video's, including a few for Can-Am Wrestling. He is surprisingly difficult to research though as except for a few sites and blogs displaying his images, there is little to no information on his career since his time between the staples.

Heart Throb: Video & Behind The Scenes

I think fate had a little to do with Norm's appearance on FH this Valentines. I have been fortunate to have been able to showcase the work of New Manhattan Studios on many holidays, including February 14th. I first featured Wes's heart and chocolate themed images with his romantic penthouse images of Claudiu back in 2014. (Ambition). Then last year, we celebrated the day with New Manhattan Studios work with Bond in two features, (A Valentines Unattire) and a look behind the scenes. (Becoming Bond)

'There was an amusing commonality between the two sessions that might be apparent to the more intent viewer. Bond’s borrowed-from-Dad tuxedo and Norm’s purchased-for-the-occasion red flannel long-johns were each visibly too big. Any number of clamps and pins couldn’t hide the fact that the models were swimming in the clothing'

'The solution in both cases was the same: grab a few establishing shots and get them out of the clothes as quickly as possible. Both men did so with aplomb as the camera’s clicked away.'

Wes and I had been talking for awhile about showcasing Alex Corso, both his work in front of, and behind the camera. FH kicked off the New Year with All Things Alex, a celebration of Alex's work with NMS. In the feature The Importance of Detail, the focus was on Alex's work as a photographer and within that set was a model, and incredible body, that I knew I wanted to explore further.

'I was blown away by the 18-year-old’s impressive physique. Indeed, not only is his build the best I’ve seen on anyone that young, he has one of the best-defined bodies of anyone I’ve shot. It was a pleasure working with him.'

I too was impressed with Norm's look and his incredible physique that he clearly works hard to maintain. It was the gym that originally connected Norm to Alex, who also works out there. Norm and Alex became friendly and after Norm learned of Alex's job, began to think maybe all of his hard work might need to be captured and enjoyed by others.

'Wes and Alex are very good kin dhearted people they were very supportive and very impressed by my shoots considering that I'm new at this! I was a bit nervous but I figured why not show off the hard work I put at the gym? It would be rude not to show off once in a while for all the hours I put in. I look forward for more shoots with Wes and Alex because I really enjoyed it!!!!!'

I am sure most of us would love to open our door to find Norm on the other side with flowers, a box of chocolates, in a tux, white shirt or wearing nothing at all. Thanks to Norm and NMS for the Valentine visit and I hope the tradition of holidays on FH with images from New Manhattan Studios continues long in the future. I have many idea's I'd love to explore (although Wes didn't seem to impressed with my idea for Alex and a four leaf clover...) But I look forward to what's to come next!

The Red Session: Norm by New Manhattan Studios

Norm by New Manhattan Studios
Words by Wes (NMS)

As I edited the photos from Norm’s third session with New Manhattan Studios, it was impossible not to compare them to the “red and white” session that we had done with Bond, (A Valentine's Unattire) a year earlier.

The elements used in Bond’s session—a tuxedo he had brought to the city for a wedding he was attending, red accessories on-hand in the studio—had led us by chance to doing work that we ultimately saw as a Valentine’s Day shoot. It stands out as one of my favorite sessions from 2015. Norm’s session was more deliberately planned and Bond had set a high bar.

Norm and Bond were both at similar points in their modeling history at the time of their “Valentine’s sessions.” In both cases it had been close to a year since their first sessions with the studio and, having done little more than some basic physique modeling, neither yet had much experience modeling. Bond was a natural athlete drawn to modeling on a lark with encouragement from friends. Norm had been introduced to the studio by his gym buddy, Alex, our model/stylist and assistant photographer.

While we had haphazardly wound up in Valentine’s territory with Bond, from the very start of Norm’s third session we discussed doing work that might be used online as a collection of Valentine’s-themed images. I was not at all sure that this new-to-modeling, 19-year-old bodybuilder would be comfortable posing in this manner nor with having the images so broadly circulated.

Sitting at the counter in the dressing room before venturing into the studio, I leafed through the published work from Bond’s session and told Norm that if he was up for it, we’d be aiming for a similar Valentine theme. I showed that Bond had set a high bar and that the work had a bit of an erotic edge that would require teasing the camera and some nudity. To my happy surprise the model appeared flattered that he was being considered for such an assignment and assured me that he was “in.”

As usual, we spent too much time on the initial set-ups, but such is the nature of warming up for both the photographers and the model. Norm seemed comforted by the fact that his gym-buddy Alex was working the shoot. He knew Alex to be an experienced model and was attentive to the directions and pointers being offered by his friend.

Coming from the same town and gym, not only did they have a bit of personal history in common, Alex’s cool and professional demeanor was helpful in putting the new model at ease. As he relaxed he started getting into the mindset of the shoot. His blossoming confidence was apparent to the camera as he started turning on the charm and making eye contact like a pro.

The casual viewer isn’t going to see many similarities between Bond’s unplanned Valentine’s session and Norm’s more plotted “red session.” Ultimately, any two photo sessions are as different as the models working in the center of the floor. That said, both men met the challenge and delivered striking sets of photos well-suited to inspiring fantasies of an ideal Valentine date.

Terrence Dineen
Playgirl: February 1989
Photography by David Vance

Terrence Dineen was one of the hottest and most in demand models of the 80's and 90's. Most remember Terrence from his appearances in Playgirl, but he also had a thriving career in catalogue and fashion. Terrence's beautiful body and engaging face and smile melted the hearts of many, including myself. I remember seeing that red hot Valentine cover when I was just a kid, but it wasn't until years later, thanks to the internet, I was able to fully enjoy his three Playgirl appearances.

Terrence bared it all in his two 1993 pictorials (which you can see on FH HERE:) but in his first appearance, he played it coy as 1989's Valentine Cupid shot by FH Favorite David Vance. Sadly, Terrence died in 2011, but I thought today a good time to remember his red and satin Playgirl Valentine debut.
