RePose:To lie at rest, to lie dead, to remain still or concealed

There are many artists who beautifully capture the male form. Some, choose to shoot and focus their lens on what they have defined as beautiful in terms of body height and weight, muscle mass, skin tone, hair, color and length on both head and body, race and age. There are others though, who capture the male form without the limits of a definition. David Gray of YogaBear Studio is one of those photographers.

I love how David has weaved so many themes into his new series RePose. It is not uncommon to see the male nude shot on a bed, on or within white sheets. David doesn't stop there however, the bed becomes a billowy background, soft yet stark. The white sheets act to both conceal and reveal. They cover and shroud, protect and unveil. There is a sense of freedom, yet the sheets also act as a tool of bondage, keeping the those in the bed trapped exactly where the camera wants them.

'I am basically a free spirit and there's nothing I wont do if the result in making cool pics!'

Although I began FH in the fall of 2007, it wasn't until the 2008 that I began to get serious about putting together profiles on the artists and models whose work I loved. In the past six years I have profiled hundreds of men in front of and behind the camera. Some models hit big with one shoot or even just one image that connected with viewers and they quickly found their likeness spread all over the blogosphere and sites devoted to the male form. For some, this is as far as it went. Others however, were able to use this instant flash of attention to do much more

Model Nick Wolanski was one of the models I profiled back in 2008 under the heading 'Favorite New Model Of The Day'. I think some of the first images I saw of Nick were from IFB photography and I was instantly stimulated visually with the incredible shots of Nick, hanging on the side of the rocks and buildings with the ocean and small islands in the background. Due to his strong look and desire to push himself creatively and without boundaries, I have each year since, covered Nick's work with some of the best photographers in Europe, and around the globe.

Nick's lasting appeal goes beyond his appearance and willingness to bare all, that in fact is just the beginning. Nick has made connections and worked with some of the world's best photographers not just from the UK, but the rest of Europe and America as well. He has gained not just experience, but a incredible reputation for professionalism, being reliable and giving 100% with every shoot. Nick uses his looks, and strength in front of the camera, along with his brain and business sense to support his another career. As a DJ, the Scottish powerhouse knows how to work the crowds, give them what they want, both the audible and the visual. Nick taps deep into himself to create a very personal sound that so many respond to.

Within his work as a model, Nick has been put in many locations and situations while shooting, but the best artists know to keep the focus on his face and incredible physique. When I saw these shots from Los Angeles photographer Brian Jones from Studio 35, I loved how he captured Nick's form so beautifully with simple, classic poses. I especially loved his head shots of Nick, showcasing his face and eyes with a beautiful, almost soulful result.

These Photos from Nick's session with Brian were shot for a calendar a couple years ago in Los Angeles. Like most of artists who have worked with Nick, Brian described working with Nick as wonderfully easy. 'He was very confident in front of the camera, a natural beauty.' Brian says he was drawn to shooting Nick because of his masculine demeanor and presentation counterbalanced by his graceful look and lines. I think the juxtaposition Brian describes is a key reason for Nick's continued ability to appeal and connect with those who view his images.

In All His Splendor

I never liked Warren Beatty, in fact I actively disliked him. I am not sure actually that I have really seen any of his movies other than Dick Tracy, and had no desire to. I have seen him interviewed and he always seemed so odd, cocky and distant.

I knew little about him other than a bit of his vast history with women. Last year though I remember reading about his child who was transgendered, and wondered how the legendary Lothario was dealing with is eldest daughter transitioning into being a boy. Then, last week I watched my DVR recording of 1961's Splendor In The Grass.

I got it. As Bud Stamper, Beatty was brimming with sexual energy and I loved how although the character was not written as especially likable, was still like a magnet of sexuality, pulling everyone around him in. Beatty never looked better, the curve of his nose and chin, his beautiful lips. I guess they were always there, but took watching him in Splendor to have me actually see it.

What though the radiance
which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass,
of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind

Eugene Antoine: At The Top Of The Stairs

My favorite images are able to trigger something inside me, produce and an aesthetic response and leave a lasting imprint. I especially love when what is triggered is something suppressed, a time or emotion that I hadn't thought of in a long time. When I saw the above photo of Eugene Antoine the sensation of déjà vu was both quick and powerful.

The image of Eugene, by Missouri photographer Connie LaFlam brought back memories of the many hours I spent at the top of the stairs in the home I grew up in. Not only is there a similarity with the wood and railings, the window, and sill are almost identical to what has been captured in memories. I spent a lot of time there, sometimes with my younger brother, but usually alone. When I was frightened or spooked, it helped to get out of bed and quietly crouch on the landing. From there, I was comforted by the light and noise from below. Usually it was my parents, in the living room watching tv, or in the kitchen, preparing for the day ahead.

My favorite times on those stairs were the weekends. It was then my brother was usually by my side. Growing up in the eighties, it seemed house parties were more common than today. My parents belonged to a card group, and usually once every six or eight weeks it would be their turn to host. On those nights, the noises below were of music and laugher and the voices of men and women, all who had consumed far too much alcohol.

Although there was a bathroom on the main floor, every once in awhile someone would decide to use the one upstairs. Either because the main floor one was occupied, or because for what ever reason, they wanted a bit more privacy than the one downstairs allowed. Whaen that occurred, a wave of excitement ran through my brother and I as we ran as fast, and as quietly, as we could back to our bedrooms.

What was so great about the view from top of the stairs was that it was limited to my imagination. You really couldn't actually see anything but stairs and few feet of the floor below. You could hear though, louder than if you had actually been downstairs. Voices, music, laughter and arguments echoed loudly straight up to the landing. As I listened, I visualized actions to match the words and noises I was hearing. It was always interesting when there was a voice, a person downstairs who I had not met. It was always a mystery trying to figure out who they were and what they looked like. Sometimes, I stayed up late enough to watch them leave through the window. Other times, exhaustion kept their identity a secret.

There is often a similar mystery s profiling models. The challenge is to uncover something about them, peeling back a layer beyond what is seen in their images. The model, staring wistfully out of the window, may have been totally naked, but that didn't mean there weren't interesting layers to be uncovered. 28 year old model Eugene Antoine has a confidence in who he is and what he has. He is also happy to share and have others enjoy it and Eugene admits to loving the attention.

'There is little wrong in being naked, unless you see it wrong being naked.'

Eugene takes pride in his body and appearance and recently got into crossfit and loves how it is shaping his body to be more lean and defined. Away from the camera, Eugene loves science, and you can see that reflected in his choice of tattoos, including the carbon atom on his arm. The most important things in his life revolve around his love of his wife and his pups. Eugene says both he and his wife are bi and describes them both as pseudo swingers.

I wonder if there were ever any bi couple swingers who partied with my parents at the bottom of that staircase? There was a time I would have been sure not, but like most things, my parents have proven to be one the one of the biggest mysteries to unravel. I have learned so much about them growing up, usually one little piece at a time. It is sort of too bad there are not as many house parties today. That perch at the top of the stairs began a deep curiosity within me that still follows me today.

Brother Where Art Thou?

My interest in Judd, and Big Brother as a whole ended last night. Judd's country boy appeal only went so far and his joining the trash bandwagon this week has been turning off the show a few weeks before it ends. The season has been full of ugly behavior. The racists comments got the media buzzing, but that was the tip of the ice berg on the level of filth from most of the houseguests. Although initially it seemed a battle between Helen and Amanda, the show really became about Elissa and Amanda. Most loved or hated one or the other and last night, both walked out the door. Although she flirted with being annoying and condescending, I was certainly on team Elissa, one of the only people really worth rooting for. Big Brother Canada proved that you didn't have to jump totally into the gutter to make the show watchable. I hope the casting people for the US version learn that before next spring.

Hans Fahrmeyer: Shower PHAT down

It was while working on a 2011 Sunday's With Hans that I was first introduced to porn star Phat Daddy. So overtly sexual, subtlety or restraint are not a part of his make-up. Thankfully, those are words I don't use often for photographer Hans Fahrmeyer, making for a great partnership.

If you head on over to Han's tumblr page, Phat jumps into the shower, and as Adele's Someone Like You plays in the background, Phat gets things quickly steamy as he jumps in the shower and lathers up in a brand new video!

One of my favorite features to put together this past summer was Cornered by JrChristiansenStudio. When I started the piece I had no idea of where I was going, but the images took me an interesting place in my memories. When spending time with Jr's portfolio however, there were a couple of models whose look, and images deserved attention of their own. One of my favorites was Jonathan.

'The shoot with Jonathan was great and this was my 2nd shoot with him. He's very laid back, super sweet & fun. He is also a very popular Dancer/Party Host in the NYC area. As well as a budding photographer!'

22 yr old Jonathan describes himself as a Colombian and Dominican Singer/Songwriter open to 'almost' anything. I love Jonathan's look and especially love the way Jr shot and framed his incredible physique with the side view profile body images. I always think that with a rooftop location, part of the excitement, in the work, and the final images, is wondering how many unsuspecting people, in their offices or homes, might be watching. Minding their own business, by simply glancing out of their windows, they become and interactive and voyeuristic participant in what is going on up on the roof.

Happy Grandparents Day:

I never really had grandparents, 3 of 4 were dead by the time I was 5 and the last one lived so far away I only saw them a few times. That doesn't mean that I don't appreciate their importance. I had some wonderful older great aunts and uncles who were saviours to me at different times in my live. Happy Grandparents Day to any grandparents and their grandparent who may follow the blog!

One of my favorite Grandmothers was Mother Jefferson. Zara Cully was a riot and although I haven't seen much of the show, I have been catching up with some classic episodes on YouTube. There are many great episodes but if your a fan of Mother Jefferson, I would start HERE: with Mother Jefferson's Fall.

I have loved the work of photographer Joseph Lally for a long time, but recently have really been enjoying his collaborations with model Allen Lovell. Their most recent project is the video Here With Me, a exploration into love, hate, regret and obsession, many of the feelings that have consumed us all after a break-up.

Not Quite Home Alone: Enrique by Studio James

'I love starting with dark images and painting them with just enough light to tease the mind.'

Back in 2011 I profiled Wisconsin photographer Robert James and his work with model Kyle (Home Alone). Born from a desire not to pose his models, Robert's Home Alone series is one of my favorites. Robert simply sets a stage and leaves his models to inhabit the space as naturally as possible.

All of us can identify with the freedom of being Home Alone, especially when we were younger and shared our living space with parents and siblings. For me, having the odd evening, even the odd hour, alone in the house was something I always looked forward to. Most of us wouldn't necessarily want those moments captured on film however, because when young, being home alone means exploring parts of the house, and yourself, you wouldn't normally do otherwise.

As a young boy, it was when home alone that I got to explore pieces of who I was without the risk of being judged or ridiculed. It was a time to explore to the rooms of my siblings and my parents, looking for clues to who I was and how I fit into the world. My fathers suits, my mothers jewelry and clothes. My brothers secret drawer and magazine stash. It was a time experiment with wardrobe and hair and look at myself naked in my mothers full length mirror. It was the only time I could loudly play music and dance around on the make believe stage in our living room.

When you live in house with others, being alone also provides a brief window of time to safely explore your sexuality. My brother's Playboy magazine's provided stimulation as they thankfully featured the odd male/female couple shoots that became one of the few places available to enjoy taking in the male naked body.

The only downside to this alone time at home was that it never really lasted too long. After about a half hour, I would always start to worry someone was going to come home and discover my secrets. I continued what I was doing, but now frequently peeked through the drapes to ensure a car hadn't pulled into the drive way. There were many days I had to rip off what I was wearing, turn off the stereo, run frantically around, room to room, replacing everything I had used during my time alone. Then, as the key entered the lock, I threw myself onto the couch, flicked on the television and pretended I had been laying there the entire time. I am quite sure my heavy breathing gave me away, but my parents never really said to much, even though I am sure they knew.

For Enrique, being home alone means relaxing and removing the clothing that kept him under wraps all day. Pouring a drink, stretching and enjoying the feeling on skin on fabric and he pulls the blanket up to enjoy the freedom that comes from finally being by himself. Enrique has an spectacular body and his face is beautiful with magnificent distinct features.

As incredible as these images are, Robert says it was somewhat of an odd shoot with the natural element he strives for a challenge to achieve. Enrique definitely has the look and the modeling skills for sure, and was fully comfortable being naked in front of the camera, but during the shoot model and artist were far from being home alone. The addition of a third party created a weird dynamic that made it a struggle to create a natural atmosphere. Although Robert welcomes others to his shoots, in this case, the third party created a bit of a creative block that Enrique and Robert had to work around. Despite not having the luxury and freedom of being alone, they obviously overcame any distractions to end up with these incredible final images.

Just Because: Guillermo Díaz

One of the reasons I support and fight for equal rights is not to make having them matter, but to make having them not matter. It shouldn't be something special to have the same rights as others, it should simply be just a right. There is so much written about celebrities and coming out. Should they, shouldn't they, do they have a responsibility, or the right to choose for themselves, or have their rights been given up to angry bloggers?

What I love so much about actor Guillermo Díaz is he has done something I truly respect, he has made these questions almost irrelevant. Guillermo is gay, but it hardly matters. Unlike those who have taken to talk shows and magazine covers, Guillermo' energy has been focused on his acting with the results truly mesmerizing.

This past weekend, I finally finished the last 5 episodes of last seasons Scandal and Guillermo's performance was both chilling and heartbreaking. While many Scandal viewers are concerned about whether Olivia and President Grant will ever be together, my attention is all on Huck. Guillermo's Huck moves between performing cold calculated torture and murder through the toll the emotional pain and anguish his actions have taken on him. His ability to have you support and feel for the character speaks to the level of commitment Guillermo has to his role.

Guillermo breaks so many assumptions and stereotypes not through his actions, but instead, seemingly through his lack thereof. Simply by being who he is and excelling at his craft make everything else rather unimportant, exactly how it should be.
