A Ton Of Bricks

Some of you may remember that I wrote a piece after the death of Elizabeth Taylor about never actually having seen any of her movies. At that time I had seen very few older movies actually, something I have more than rectified since. Thanks to the recommendations from several friends and blog readers, and of course the TMC network, I have escaped into the world of film classics ever since.

Last week I finally watched the film version of Tennessee Williams Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. I think I sort of avoided the film, having seen the stage production, along with reading about how the script removed almost all of the homosexual themes for the 1958 film. Script changes aside, I truly loved the film. The entire cast was incredible and I have never been so attracted to Paul Newman as I was while watching him play Brick. Through Newman's skillful portrayal, the themes removed from dialogue were still clearly present through his actions, eyes and anguish. Newman's Brick was tortured, yet still alluringly sexual, never more so than when drenched, outside in the rain. I look forward to a repeat viewing in the future.

After viewing the film, I decided to go on the hunt for other actors who inhabited the role of Brick. I found dozens and dozens, but below, are a few of my favorites.

Below: Ben Gazzara as Brick and Barbara Bel Geddes as Maggie, Original Broadway Production 1955

Below: Keir Dullea as Brick and Fred Gwynne as Big Daddy, Broadway revival 1974

Below: Daniel Hugh Kelly as Brick, Kathleen Turner as Maggie, Broadway revival 1990.

Below: Jason Patric as Brick, Margo Martindale as Big Mama, Broadway Revival 2003

Below: I love actor Jeremy Davidson who played Brick opposite wife Mary Stuart Masterson as Maggie at The Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theatre in 2004.

Gray Powell as Brick along side Moya O’Connell as Maggie at the 2011 Shaw Festival in Ontario.

Kelby Akin as Brick and Georgia Lyman as Maggie at Boston's Lyric Theatre, 2009

Below: The delicious Benjamin Walker as Brick, Broadway revival staged earlier this year.

Delft Blue: Phil by msbimages

I can't believe that a year has gone by since I last featured the work of Michal Boothe from msbimages. Michal's work is always a breath of fresh air as always hits the mark, capturing beautifully and cleanly the essence of what makes the man in front of his lens sexy, unique and most of all special. It is often frustrating seeing an image of great looking model that the photographer either had no clue how to shoot, or diluted the beauty of their model with overpowering distractions, concepts or editing.

In this exquisite set of images, Michal captures Phil. Not angry Phil, not clown Phil, not porn star Phil, not even model Phil, just Phil. Michal connected with his newest model through a photographer friend and while on his way to Tennessee, Phil stopped over in Dallas for the shoot. Just out of military, posing naked in front of the camera was a piece of cake compared to his previous gig of flying helicopters in Afghanistan.

'His eyes are delft blue and immediately grab your attention. It is hard not to stare or even to look away.'

Michal wisely keeps those eyes in focus in most of his shots of Phil (except of course when shooting Phil's beautiful backside). Blue is known to have a calming effect, evoking peaceful and tranquil feelings and Phil's eyes certain evoke those, and other feelings in me. I hadn't really known too much about the origin of delft blue, but a quick google search informed me it was a created color through the calcinations of cobalt with quartz sand and potash. Used commonly in glass and pottery, when first created in the 17th century, it was a time consuming and expensive process. A color once so difficult and complex to create, occurring so naturally in the eyes of Phil.

Last Breath of Summer

On the East Coast, the window to partake in summer activities is starting to run out. The nights are cooler, the first leaves are falling and hurricane warnings are starting. Although Autumn is my favorite time of year, and winter a close second, I am not quite ready to dig out my parka and submit willingly to summer ending just quite yet... Over the next few weeks, before everything green turns orange, look for a few summer themed posts before taking that last breath!

Live Art For Aids by GD Photowerks

Last Monday I profiled photographer Chris Bosch of GD Photowerks and his work with the adorable Ricky Roman. (Laundry Day) That same evening, Chris and Ricky were together again at a charity event for Aids Project New Haven.

It was a paint party and as a part of it, local artist Ricky Mestre painted images onto Ricky Roman's body and then transferred them to canvas by pressing the canvas to Ricky's body. Chris photographed the event and graciously sent on some of the images! Most of the photos will eventually end up on Pulse Saturdays, the Facebook page of the club where the event was held, so be sure to check out more!

Visible Spectrum: Jon by Patrick Slater

'Like I once read: The best camera is the one you have with you. I would add to that, the best location is where you are, and your best model is who you have. Simplistic I know...but for me, up to this point, it has worked.'

Although it may sound simple, I also believe some of the most complicated and complex of processes can appear simple when done by a skilled and talented artist. I often write on FH, that what I look for most of all in an image, is to see something I have never seen before. That was the case when I first encountered the work of North Carolina photographer Patrick Slater. The first images of Patrick's I saw were of his 'square series'. It was amazing to me how different an image could look, and feel, simply by the framing of his images, and models, in a square not a rectangle. There was both a physical and emotional change in how bodies filled the space.

'While I have thousands of dollars of studio equipment, I have found that my best pictures are my camera, a flash and a good lens.'

We all have a visual spectrum and it's scope, limited only by an individuals creativity and desire. Although some might say the limits are also connected to the physical, I would argue physical limitations are only an obstacle that requires going over or around by the mind and imagination of the artist. Growing up in a family of photographers, Patrick Slater grew up and shooting and developing his own film and prints. As a boy, the young artist discovered he had severe colorblindness. Despite this challenge, Patrick's work is beautifully layered in texture, color and most importantly light. Without color as an anchor, Patrick uses light as a barometer and guide within his work.

'Even though most of my medium was black and white, I grew up in a color world. My switch to digital photography is a fairly recent one. Color references are a daily occurrence; sunsets, rainbows, the guy in the red shirt....really did nothing for me. So when I picked up a digital camera, I did what I've done all my life...I looked at the patterns of light. The shadows on the underside of clouds, lighting in movies, the flash of sun on water, or the gentle slope of light as it falls off a face. I found, very quickly, that when I shot for light, the color takes care of itself.'

Until recently, most of his physique work was relegated within his studio. Patrick says he realized the one-dimensionality of his work and really wanted to move outside. 'Luckily I had friends who were willing to model, and friends who graciously allowed me to shoot on their property.' Jon is the first of three models I will be featuring from the location on FH. None of the three models have MM pages as Patrick says he prefers to work with unheard of talent--a term he has dubbed "anti-models". Men who are raw, not jaded or overly prepared or experienced and without pretense.

'These shots are taken in around the Appalachians of North Carolina. The light here has a much more subtle quality than light out West or up North. I think it's the humidity, warmth and vegetation that scatters light and makes it...well...softer. Add to this the energy of old cabins, barns and forests, and you have the perfect recipe for amazing pictures.'

Sunday With Hans: From Russia With Love

For today's Sunday's With Hans, New York photographer Hans Fahrmeyer put his focus on the many incredible men of Russian decent whose families over the last few generations have immigrated to the United States. Currently, the Russian American population is estimated to be close to 3.13 million.

New York became the home for many, with Brighton Beach having one of the highest populations of Russian-speaking immigrants in the country. Brighton Beach is an Oceanside neighborhood in the southern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It's beautiful beaches create the perfect summer destination spot for residents and tourists, not to mention its proximity to the amusement parks in Coney Island. The neighborhood also served as the setting for the 1983 Neil Simon play, and later movie, Brighton Beach Memoirs.

Although the area was once home to the Russian Mafia, many of the Russian immigrants in New York actually immigrated after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. By mid-1993 close to 50% of Russians were living in poverty which prompted a large wave of both political and economic emigration from Russia.

A notable part of the 1991—2001 immigration wave consisted of scientists and engineers who, faced with extremely poor job market at home. By 2003 there were estimated to be about 20,000 Russian scientists working in the United States and the Russian software engineers were responsible for a large percentage of the products coming from Microsoft.

In the world of female models, many women of Russian decent have become some of the most popular women to photograph and hit the runways. Like everything connected to modeling and fashion, men usually get the short end of the stick, but thanks to these images and the new video from Hans Fahrmeyer, the men from Russia get the love they deserve!

An Olympic Truce?

From Mary Pilon of The New York Times:

Every two years, the United Nations adopts a resolution called the Olympic Truce, a perfunctory statement that invokes the ancient Greeks and celebrates friendly competition and “the cause of peace.”

United Nations representatives from around the world spent weeks pushing Russia to amend the language to include gay people, according to interviews with representatives from eight countries. This week, after extensive negotiations behind the scenes, Russia altered the truce’s language to say that it would “promote social inclusion without discrimination of any kind.”

They are just words I know, they mean very little, but yet are a beginning. Most of the world's biggest social changes began with changes to the written word.

Come On Get Happy

I don't think I have ever seen an episode of the Partridge Family. It was a bit before my time and David Cassidy for some reason bugs me a little. In the early 80's however, in our huge wall unit stereo cabinet, were my parents albums. It was there I discovered my love for music, beginning with my parents records. Elvis, The Beatles, The Grease and Saturday Night Fever soundtracks and the album below. Even without ever seeing a second of the show, this album was a guilty pleasure. I played it over and over and over again until it was so scratched up we had to throw it out. Last weekend, at the old movie and record store near my home I saw the album again, this time on CD. All the way home I listened to my favorite song Echo Valley 26809, such a cheesy, bad song that still manages to be addicting all these years later.

Meaty: SaulH by TR Pics

'My goal is finally owning my own ranch with sheep, beefalo or cattle. This would help power my 4 pounds of meat a day habit! I would find it very fulfilling to sell others meat I know was raised in a manner that leaves the land better than I found it.'

I suppose there might be a few models who enter the business in the hopes of obtaining a piece of meat, but 24 year old Dallas model Saul H means it literally! These incredible images of Saul from Tom Rubeck from TR Pics are actually from their second shoot together. I am usually quite predictable when posting sets of images to be rather anal retentive, posting them in order from first to last. Although I loved Tom's first set with Saul, and will be sharing them next week, for some reason I wanted to begin with this set.

As his t-shirt indicates, clearly Saul is manly, naturally fit and at home in front of the camera. I also loved the various aspects of Saul's personality which Tom captures so beautifully in these images. With Saul's incredible body, it would be easy for an experienced artist to ignore his many other assets and charms which make up what makes him so special, Tom does not. It is one of the reasons I have such respect for Tom's work. When looking back over many features on the many men he has shot Tom Rubeck' remain some of my favorites.

The Dallas photographer always picks the most amazing and unique men to capture. I am not generally a fan of images where the men are dehumanized, or made to look like generic mannequins. In front of Tom's lens, you are not just a body, not even just a man. Tom uses his immense skills and sensibility to also capture an essence and quality in each of the men he works with, one many other photographers seem to bypass or ignore.

Tom first saw Saul on Model Mayhem and says that there were two thinks he liked right off the bat. First, he was local, both work in the Dallas area. Secondly, at the time Saul had nothing but selfies and camera images on his site. Tom loves shooting guys who either just starting out, or just haven't yet put up a huge resume of images as they are usually fresh, eager and very easy to work with. According to Tom, Saul was all of them.

Getting Started:

Saul Says:
My ex-girlfriend encouraged me to model. I needed a part-time job because 40hr/wk full-time work didn't leave me with enough time to sleep and play. Modeling was one suggestion as she considered me pretty attractive and unique looking. Some home photoshoots playing with an iPhone gave me an avatar picture to put on DFW photo models. After I had a little experience there I created my MM. She happened to be at my first shoot with Tom. Tom is easy to work with. It was one of the nicer studios I have had the privilege to shoot at so whatever ideas come up we usually have capabilities to try them. Tom tends not to use strobes because of his video background, but he lights me very well.

Tom Says:
On our first shoot, his hair was buzzed very close. It gave him a great look. Overall, Saul is the most easy-going, comfortable in his skin, laid back kind of guy. That doesn't mean he's not focused, because he is. He is involved with Power Lifting and Strong Man competitions, and strength and his diet are very important to him. On this first shoot, his girlfriend came along, and was actually very helpful, because she knew what poses he could improve on, especially the gymnastic type of poses.

'Overall, what I like about his look is that he is just about as "all man" as a guy can be. Natural body hair, plenty of it, feels comfortable nude, and is not shy at all. His body is tight, big, but not artificially. He is about as natural as they come. Looking forward to our third shoot...!'

For these images, their second shoot together, Saul had sadly broken up with his girlfriend. His hair was longer, grown for another photographer who wanted him with longer hair. Tom says Saul was just as easy and eager to please on this second time in front of my camera, and collaborated on a few ideas for some of the shots you see here.

Six for Saul:

Favorite experience modeling so far?

Hiking up hills in LA last week to shoot was a high point. I got to combine modeling with walking in nature, two of my favorite things. I learned shiny skin from real sweat looks much better than using oil or water to shine.

Strange stories from shoots?

One photographer offered to pay me $100 to receive a back massage.

Factors weighed before deciding to take it all off?

I really didn't have to weigh any factors. I am comfortable with nudity and look better without clothes. If someone sees a nude photo of me and is bothered I did that it's entirely their problem. They didn't have to go seek it out, they didn't need to cling to strange opinions about unclothed bodies.

Response from Family & Friends?

Response has been positive, especially from friends. I don't think my mom understands that artistic nude includes nudity, because even though I have showed her nude photos she thought were cool/beautiful the next month she'll advise me "don't do any nudity stuff". I've heard some limiting beliefs about modeling not being consistent enough work or that I'll die without health insurance. In reality, nothing was killing me faster than my old 8-5 safety engineering desk job complete with 3 hour commute because flexible starting wasn't allowed.

Part of your body are you most happy with, part gets the most attention from others?

'I'm most happy with my chest hair, it has expanded to cover at least double the area it did when I was 20. My legs and butt get the most attention because they are very muscular.'
