Some of you may have noticed, that FH went quiet for awhile at the end of May. Several readers (thank you!) wrote with questions and concerns about whether I was ending the site, I'm not. I had planned a weekend away, but that weekend ended up being extended for positive reasons. By the time I was set to return home, I had became sick, and when finally arrived home, it took a few days before I could get my brain to focus and concentrate on writing again. I had an interesting drive home. I briefly questioned whether to write about it, but in end knew my desire to share was about light, not shade

I have shared before that I now live in the country. I am 2 hours from the nearest large city and between the that city and my home are back roads, small towns, farm land and many many cows. Although I have travelled that highway hundreds of times over the last 10 years, on my way home, for the first time ever, I miscalculated my gas situation. About 45 minutes from home, my car let me know I was about to run out of fuel. I was between two towns that I knew had gas stations, but I didn't feel my car would make it to ether.

I pulled off at the very next exit at a tiny tiny town I had been at once before. I knew there was a drugstore that I had stopped at for water a few years ago. &I also thought I remembered a main street which I was sure would have a gas station. It didn't. There was that drug store, a bank, a hardware store and a small diner. &It was about 8:30pm at night and it wa starting to get dark. The only building still open was the diner. There wasn't anyone eating or sitting around when I entered. The only person in sight was an old man sitting on a stool behind the counter. I think he may have been smoking just before I walked in. I couldn't smell it, but he seemed 'caught' and was shoving something down to his side. He didn't look up when I asked about a gas station, and although not unfriendly, was quiet and aloof.

He informed me there wasn't a gas station in town and that I had better head to the town 30 minutes back on the highway. When I told him that I didn't think I would make it back, he shrugged and said that he never goes there, but guessed I could try the Reserve. He gave me sketchy directions, but he thought I could get there in 5 minutes. It seemed my best bet. I started out again, gas gauge on empty to find the Reserve. His directions (or my ability to follow them) sucked. After a series of rights and lefts, I found myself at a dead end. I could see nothing in the distance except pastures. Any cows that may have been there earlier, had long since returned to the barn for the night.

I back tracked, this time getting so lost, I could not even find my way back to the diner. Reluctantly I stopped at a house when I saw a man out front putting away his lawn mower. Like the man in the diner, he was not friendly. I think I startled him, pulling up and desperately asking for his assistance.. He gave me just one sentence. 'Go back towards town and look for exit 9, it is near there.' His directions got me to exit 9, but it was an exit back onto the highway. There were no other signs, no other streets. I headed back to where I had been, I didn't want to see the lawn mower man again, but my only hope was that he might have a bit of gas left over from mowing that he might sell me.

Thank goodness, just before I made it back to his house, I passed a woman walking her husky's. She too, did not seem happy to see me, but once I asked my question, she seemed to relax a little. Again, no smile, but that was ok, as her clear, concise directions to the reserve were better than any smile I could have hoped for.

Following her lead, I pulled into the reserve about 10 minutes later. I don't think I could have made it another 10 minutes without gas. It was pitch black, with no one in sight, The street's one store, with one gas pump was thankfully very easy to find. I almost lost it when I saw the closed sign, but pulled in and parked by the pump anyway. As I got out of the car, I heard the door to the store shut and looked up to see one of the most beautiful men I had ever laid eyes on walking towards me. He was about 5'8", lean and fit. With only a white t-shirt and ripped jeans, I could tell he took care of his body. He looked like he could be the twin of model Michael Hudson (shown in these images) He had incredibly beautiful dark eyes and the most beautiful long hair that cascaded down his back. Best of all, he was smiling.

Hudson by Jeff Slater

I could tell he knew my dilemma without my having to say a word. I guess I looked that desperate, or was that out of my element. He told me the store was closed, but that he could still get me gas if I had cash. I gave him a big thank you and told him gas was all I needed. The pump was an old one, not self serve so I stood there watching as he began to fill my tank. He kept his gaze on me the entire time, with his beautiful smile still on his face. After a minute or so, I felt awkward just standing there smiling back and got in the car. When he was done, he leaned inside the car, maintaining his big smile, and gave me the total. I paid, smiled back and pulled away. I could see him still standing there, watching as I drove back to find the highway.

As I got back on the highway and drove back home, I began to think how seldom I see indigenous people in town. I thought of how beautiful he was, and how the only bit of kindness I received that night was from someone's whose space I had invaded. I know that I will be back to that Reserve and I will make sure to return to that gas station...often . If I am ever able to fulfil my dream of again picking up a camera, it will be that guy at the pumps, that I ask to shoot first.

Loft Lighting: Alexandre by Paul Sixta

It was pose, or more specifically, Posturing, that first drew me to the work of filmmaker and photographer Paul Sixta. It was this theme, that again had me contacting Paul about featuring more of his work.

I was instantly drawn to the image below. I love Paul's shot of Rotterdam dancer Alexandre. I love the pose, I love the positioning, I love how Paul captured the loft lighting, not cascading over Alexandre, but pointing and focusing our view towards him. Most of all, I loved Alexandre's smile. His unique body position, along with his natural, and totally adorable smile, create a fun, sexy and playful image.

Playful isn't an adjective usually used when describing images of the nude male form, but it fits this shoot beautifully. Paul's work with Alexandre is part of his Men At Home project, a series of images featuring models just at home, but interacting with their home environment. I love the imaginative and playful feel to the images. When we're young, we physically interact more intensely with our home and surroundings.

We jump on beds, we roll on floors, we grab, touch and pull ourselves across and up towards ceilings, corners and spaces in our homes. We run and jump and throw our bodies against walls, floors and sides of furniture. When we get older, we're more careful.  We slow down and are more timid in our interactions. We rarely get on the floor, or reach for the ceilings. We protect our belongings, our furniture and are careful not to bend, scratch or ruin spaces and surfaces. Paul's images take me back to a time when anything, a floor, a wall, a window were not about cleaning, protecting or 'taking care of', but were for fun and instruments of play. At the beginning of The Lead with Jake Tapper, Tapper does a sort of 'vanity open' standing in front of his desk. Tapper outlines his main stories, then struts back to the desk as the opening credits role. Lately, I have been enjoying when CNN's Chief National Security Correspondent Jim Sciutto fills in for Tapper. I always thought Sciutto was good looking, but he is one delicious tall drink of water doing the Tapper's signature strut!

Tall, but not that tall!

Three Way by Dennis Nauert

Matt

'Matt has such an athletic build so I wanted to use a single light source to show off his best assets. Great guy to work with.'

When I first profiled photographer Dennis Nauert back in 2012, Dennis shared that he had only been shooting for the male form for about a year.  Dennis had a joined a photographer meet up group which consisted of several photographers who got together to shoot a variety of different models during the series of workshops.

Variety seems to always pop up each time I feature Dennis' work.  The last time I featured the Austin photographers images we struggled to narrow down the focus to just one model, so instead chose three favorites. (3 Way Split) We found ourselves in a similar situation this time.  Instead of leaving any favorites out, it made sense to include each of the models in a visual three way.

One of the things I have loved while featuring so many of the models that Dennis has shot are the visual themes that arise.   Dennis uses a variety of props and sets in his shoots, one of my favorites being his putting his models in red and black leather jackets, and not much else.  Both Matt and Jacob wear the jacket during their shoots and Matt's butt looks exceptionally appealing when highlighted by just his red jacket.

Jacob:

'I wasn't able to spend much time working with Jacob but his willingness to try different things really paid off. Looking forward to spending more time photographing him.'

Dennis' use of variety isn't restricted just to props and fashion.  Dennis brings out a variety of qualities in the men he shoots.  With a focus beyond just muscle and body parts, Dennis has a knack for being able to capture the perfect balance of masculinity and beauty, and even a hint of old Hollywood glamour.

Milo

'I've had the opportunity to work with Milo on more occasions than any other model I have shot. With his input we have tried different lighting, props and experimented with body paint.'

It is always quite clear when a photographer's focus is simply shooting a hot body.  In all of his work, and within theses images of Matt, Jacob and Milo, Dennis is a creative collaborator.  Utilising each models specific physical qualities along with their individual traits and forms of expression, uniquely beautiful visuals are created.

The Bottom Line: Andres Vergelma

I always love finding men to lust over that don't come close, on paper anyway, to the traits I usually love to visualize and fantasize about. Andrés Vergel is certainly one of those men.

Originally from Colombia, but now living in Brazil, model, photographer and fitness consultant, Andrés has an incredible physique, one clearly from hours of dedication and hard work. I especially love his hair cut and his sexy glasses, and how they beautifully fit with his incredible body, and bountiful, not to mention, beautifully photographic backside.

Tales of the ER: Charles Canterbury by Stephen Kahrs

'Charles has such a unique and captivating look with those sensual and seductive bedroom eyes that you never tire looking at.'

Those bedroom eyes however,  might end up being a problem...  It was indeed Charles eyes, and a beautiful sense of yearning in his facial expressions, that had me wanting to feature his work with Stephen Kahrs. With a career goal, to attend school to become a nurse anesthetist, might have many patients, focused on Charles beautiful eyes, fighting hard not to fall asleep.

On the plus side, given how stressful hospitals can be, gazing into Charles's eyes, would be a pleasantly soothing way to slip off to dream land.  Coincidentally, it was in a hospital, an emergency room to be exact, that first connected model with photographer.  Charles turns the visual most people have when they thing of student nurse on it's head, and although he is serious about nursing, Charles hopes that even when he begins his professional career, that he can continue to model on the side.

'Steve is a joy to work with a great person and a very talented photographer. Working with Steve is wonderful. He makes me feel so great and comfortable during the shoots which really gives me the confidence to break out of my shell which then makes for a great photo shoot.'

'Last year Charles expressed some interest in having some formal portraits done. Some time had passed and I decided to approach him to see if he would be interested in shooting some stock work with me. Since the first shoot, Charles and I were quite comfortable working with each other and have always anticipated shooting together whenever possible and he's given me many usable images.'

'Over the past year, Charles has grown exponentially as a model and is great with direction, posing and even now offering creative input and suggestions. He's got a great sense of humor and I have many outtakes from our shoots to prove it! Those outtakes can make a book in itself! That's part of why we work so fluidly together. To my dismay, Charles moved west in January so I've temporarily lost opportunities to work him on a regular basis. On the upside though, he's enjoying new experiences at a nice young age!  Recently he was back in town and we found time to shoot a few fresh new images before his departure.'

In my recent features of Stephen's imagery, timeless has been a recurring theme.  There is a vintage, almost cinematic theme to many of Stephen's shoots that I really love.  A sophisticated channelling of qualities of men from previous era's.  Stephen's images of Charles are both stylistically modern, yet visually classic.  Through his use of bright, natural lighting, as well as his use of location, pose and fashion, Stephen's images of Charles have a timeless quality that brings an added visual depth to his work.

Last night was a killer television night. Between the the final NBA game of the season, and an Epic Game Of Thrones, there was slaying on both the battlefield and the basketball court. Lebron James had the game of his life, a nail biter until just before the last buzzer. I love me some flying dragons, and some Stephen Curry. Curry is young, he has plenty of time. Last night was all about Lebron and the Cavaliers.

Deconstructing the Cowboy: Kent Clark by takeapic4u

'When I saw the final images, I thought what they showed was that we had a whole lot of fun!'

Fun has definitely risen as a theme in several of my most recent model and photographer features. Thank goodness!  We seemed to go through a period where images of the naked male form became so serious.  Photographers appeared to want 'justify' their nude work by using exaggerated themes and overly edited images.  Models often looked angry, almost pained.  It was if there instruction was to reassure the viewer that they didn't want to be standing there naked, and were not having the leas bit of fun.

Some of my favorite shoots are based on fun.  Bringing forth the sense of imaginative play we all experienced when we were young.  A time before life got tough, when everything was new, exciting and an adventure.  Times when we put a towel around are neck as a cape, and we ran around our backyard saving the world.  In the run of one afternoon, we morphed back and forth into being a superhero, a spaceship captain, monster, pirate or cowboy.

Playing a cowboy was a favorite for most young boys, and many young girls.  Riding a horse, shooting a gun, using the lasso and gathering up the bad guys in the wild wild west. This sense of fun and play is certain beautifully at the core of takeapic4u's images of 22 year old model Kent Clark. Both artist and model embraced the fun, and the play, especially when Kent dove into the mud!.  I certainly saw, and felt this strongly while enjoying the resulting images.

'I have pretty much had a camera in my hand since I could hold one. I started taking serious photos of wildlife and landscapes and when people that looked through my shots liked them, I started getting requests for portraits, engagement photos, family shots and lots of senior pictures'

Dave choose the perfect model, and cowboy to deconstruct.  Kent has an engaging look that captivated me from the get go.  Kent clearly has a great body, but his strength is his commitment to the process and the theme.  Kent also has the most beautiful face and lips and a killer smile that when you see it, (in the last pic below) confirms he was having a blast on the farm morphing into a cowboy. Dave also beautifully captures both Kent's maturity and sensuality, along with that fun and Kent's youthful sense of play.

Whenever I profile a model, I usually like to ask them about shooting naked, especially their experience taking it all off for the first time. Kent shares that people were always telling him he had a great body, so he thought why not see if he could get paid for it!  For this shoot, it was Kent's second time shooting nude, and only his second professional shoot.  It is truly amazing, the level of comfort he exudes in front of the camera.  This may be partly because this wasn't Dave's first, or second time shooting nudes.

Down & Dirty

In addition to wanting to know about a model's first experience, I also am fascinated to learn about a photographer's first time shooting a naked model.  I used to assume all the nerves are with the model, but photographers also often experience similar feeling when starting out shooting the nude male for. Dave didn't really get those 'night before nerves', nor did the naked model he shot.  Although the shoot was planned, the naked part wasn't exactly on the shoot list for the day.

A few years after shooting his high school graduation shot, one of the seniors Davd shot, now in college, contacted him about doing an starter model portfolio. Dave agreed, without really knowing much about what he was going to do.  Dave researched some ideas, and came up with his shoot list he felt would cover a variety of looks.  Formal clothes, some casual looks and several styles of underwear to get some body and fitness shots.

'After getting all the clothed shots behind us, we went down to a river and he just tossed his trunks on the water's edge and let it fly. He started posing and I have to say looked quite impressive. He was 22, 6-2, blond and clean cut. He had a full 6-pack and well developed arms, pecs and legs. You could also say that God gifted him in other ways as well. Although I am a straight photographer, I could see why there is an audience to see him au natural. He was very good looking.

It was during this first nude shoot, that one of Dave's themes, Dirty Nature was born.  The model that Dave was shooting accidentally stepped into the mud, almost to his knees. Dave figured he would step out and wash it off.  Nope... instead, he began spreading it all over his abs, chest and eventually even his face.  I can see the appeal and Kent beautifully jumped into the theme, and the mud creating some of my favorite shots from his day on the farm.

Kent's day on the farm, and naked bath in the mud, began with he and Dave connecting on Model Mayhem.  Dave was on the site looking for another model when he happened across Kent's MM portfolio.  Dave noticed that Kent was looking to shoot nudes, and felt the photos Kent had didn't capture him at his best.  Dave shot him an e-mail and a shoot was set.  'I asked him what it was about my portfolio made him want to shoot with me and he said it was the "black model fishing with the spear" that he really liked the best. I said, well, that guy isn't black, he is 100% covered in mud and that will be you very soon.'

'Kent has an amazing body, is good looking, but more importantly he is a free spirit that is fearless and super easy to work with. I liked him a lot and hoped we would have another opportunity to work together.'

The Cowboy Way???

A couple of weeks after their first shoot, Dave received a request for some cowboy themed shots, he instantly thought of Kent, remembering that Kent had shared he loved to sing Western karaoke.  Kent was game, and another shot was scheduled, this time, with Cowboy Kent.  Initially another model was also invited, but they were a no show, changing the some of the ideas Dave had come up with for the shoot.

'Kent made up for being the only mode in spades. He delivered shot after shot. We didn't know exactly how far to take the collection of photos, so we discussed what he thought about having an erection for some of the shots. He said, sure, let's see what we can get!  He was so comfortable at one point I even caught him doing a windmill move....I just shook my head and laughed.'

The shots turned out so well, Dave is considering Deconstructing more characters and professions in addition to Kent's sexy cowboy.  It is pushing Dave to think differently creatively, and hopes it might attract new models who might want to dive into themes they love and are passionate about.  Oh, about that windmill move.... no shots of that, but you may be interested in checking out a few more of Dave's images of the ultra hot and free spirited Kent on THE OVER-FLOW HERE:
