'Not even the BEST of friends go halfsies on a rubber.'
Oscy, Summer of 42

During his summer vacation on Nantucket Island in 1942, a youth eagerly awaiting his first sexual encounter finds himself developing an innocent love for a young woman awaiting news on her soldier husband's fate in WWII.

I have had 1971's Summer of '42 on my DVR since... well I think last summer.   I originally thought of tying the film into my Last Gasp of Summer series, but after starting the movie, I turned off after just a few minutes.    Prior to deleting it for good, I watched the rest last week.

Below: Grimes with director Robert Mulligan

I am glad I stuck with it, the film is beautifully shot and it had a few similar themes to one of my favorite films, Jodi Foster's Stealing Home.  Jennifer O'Neill is beautiful, but not as interesting to me as Foster was, and it a bit odd Gary Grimes (Hermie) would be so drawn to her.  That being said, Grimes is adorable and I loved his crush, especially the scene in which he was helping carry her groceries home.

I will keep my eye out on Class of 44, a 1973 sequel to Summer featuring Hermie and his two best friends.  Grimes was a little older, but still as adorable,  but from the little I read, not sure it held the beauty of the film that inspired it.

Vision Quest: Daine by Brett Kiellerop

'I like to capture and share a model's personality with the world!'

It's interesting what you see when really look.  I have been fortunate to have featured the work Queensland writer and photographer Brett Kiellerop several times over the past few years.  Several of those pieces focused on his work with the incredibly sexy, and completely adorable, Daine.

Some of you might remember those past features, but some of you may not.  In the previous pieces featuring Brett's imagery with Daine, the Kiwi model has been covered blood,, in body paint, as a tiger and masked in black leather as the executioner. Although Daine's appeal was always shown through, this time, I thought I wanted to keep the focus squarely on Daine's hot body, personality and beautiful face and smile.

I also wanted to again return to Brett's images as sort of celebration to some recent great news.  In previous stories on Brett's work, I shared Brett's loss of vision, and his struggle to shoot again as he re-navigated his work with the visual limitations.  Well... the bad news is Brett has to again re-navigate his work as a photographer, the good news, is because after 4 years of limited eye sight, after a recent surgery, Brett's vision has been almost completely restored. 'I'm shouting the news about my vision recovery from the rooftops.. it feels like a miracle!'

'To celebrate, as soon as I can find some fun quirky models, I'll be back behind the camera! I'm going to Newcastle for a couple of weeks, and have put up an availability notice on Model Mayhem to hopefully connect with some aspiring models while I'm there... Fingers crossed!'

Joining into Brett's celebration, I decided to go back to his work with Daine, and share some new images I had not featured before.  Daine is one of the main attractions from Brett's photo book Aussie Gods.  If you haven't check out the book, the over 200 page (many with  Daine!)  Kindle addition is just under four bucks on Amazon

In addition to being one of my favorites, Daine is also one of Brett's favorites. Brett describes Daine as so easygoing and friendly, a great listener.  Daine also has the ability to make whomever he is with, and whatever he is doing feel incredibly special, diving into his work with patience, tolerance as well as being incredibly open to just about anything creative.  As soon as Brett is back to shooting on a regular basis, he plans on approaching Daine again about stepping in front of his lens again.

While choosing images for this piece, I tried to focus as stated on Daine's personality, something he exudes beautifully through his images.  I didn't remember noticing, maybe due to the body paint and blood, the scars across Daine's chest.  Although they cover much of Daine's chest and upper body, they also didn't take away from the visual beauty of his body, in fact they added a layer of interest and depth.

'Initially, Daine was concerned that his scars would prevent him from being a model. He had a nasty sliding fall during a rugby game, which resulted in long red gashes over his chest. But I liked the scars! He has a dragon tattoo coming over his shoulder, and the scars ran perpendicular to the dragon's head. To me, it looked like a dragon war was taking place on his chest, with the scars being the flames from a dragon not yet in play.'

Charles Archer: The Documentarian Part 1

'I want to convey something in an image that transcends a great body and face. I want that energy and connection.'

I have loved, and been following the work of Florida photographer Charles Archer since first seeing his work with a model named Jack Jr back in 2010.   There was something so honest about Charles work I was drawn to.  Over the course of working on FH, I have come to love so many types and styles artists use in the capturing of a model.  The traditional studio shoot is not only costly, but impractical for so many artists who shoot the the male form.

I love that documentary style was used to describe Charles work.  I would also add interactive into the description.  Photographers don't sit by the phone, or the computer, accepting offer after offer from models to shoot.  So much of the work is communication and connection.  Building a reputation, a portfolio and most of all trust.  Good photographers learn how to work with models on their terms, with their boundaries, with their fantasy's and fears.  Charles has mastered this skill and the featured images are just a sampling of the results.   Charles graciously supplied so many images, and so many stories, a part two is definitely in order!

Can you share your first experience shooting a naked model? Were you nervous, how did it come about, how did it turn out?

'I have to take you back to 1990. I reached out to a photographer in Norfolk, VA who operated a studio called "Photo Opportunities". He was taking photos of male nudes and selling them in the gay papers and gay magazines. He would sell a pack of 5 prints and pay his models a commission on what he sold. Anyway, I reached out to him to express my interests in photography and I was very intrigued in what he was doing. I lived in Richmond and he invited me down to Norfolk to participate in a photo shoot. So I arrived in Norfolk - met David - who was a really nice guy. He introduced me to the model we were going to shoot.'

'I was extremely nervous. I mean here I am with a camera about to shoot a naked man! I don't remember his name but he was very handsome - cute. He had long hair and striking eyes. He flirted with me as we were doing the shoot. I could barely concentrate on what I was doing. The photos actually turned out pretty good even though at the time I didn't know what aperture was or shutter speed. I learned a lot from that experience and eventually started working with the photographer shooting some of the same models. We ended up shooting another model that weekend and I experienced photographing my first cum shot. I still have those photos and negatives. They are a part of my "print" portfolio.'

How you go about approaching a stranger about heading to a hotel and taking off all their clothes for the camera?

'I have some business cards that actually have some of my suggestive images on the back. I have presented strangers with a business card and have said, "I like your look. I'd love to photograph you." . Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I stopped in a clothing store once in San Diego. There I met Alex. We chatted and there was a connection so I said I'd love to photograph you. I gave him a card and he contacted me.I explained that I don't have a studio in San Diego but I shoot in my hotel room. He said he liked my work and was interested. I explained to him fully the process that I go through to do a shoot. And it is a process.'

'I want to make sure that the model is completely comfortable with everything that we are doing. I also tell them if I ask for a pose and they are not comfortable with it, we can shift directions and do something else. I respect the men that I shoot and I guess that comes across in the initial communication with them. I would never put a model in a situation that is going to make them regret doing a photo shoot. For what it's worth, I have photographed myself in the same manner that I have photographed others. I'm not ashamed of it and will often share that with a prospective model. AND I'm NO model!'

'I have had a lot of people approach me to be photographed. Which is great! I guess they like the realness of my images. A photographer friend calls most of my images documentary in style. I can see how he would stay that when you photograph a man completely clothed to nothing at all. It's like I'm following their every move and documenting it.'

What was the most memorable response from a guy who said No?

'Yes!!! I had flown to Seattle to do a shoot one weekend. This was a TFP - Time for Print shoot with 1 model. He had lined up another model and a stylist/makeup artist. I was going to shoot the 2 models separately and then together. I was doing portfolio work with them all. I talked to all involved in the shoot before hand so we were all clear on what we were doing. The plan was to do some clothed shooting outdoors and then some nudes.'

'It was a beautiful day in Seattle - warm and sunny. I was staying at a B&B. We all got together at the B&B and then started the session. I actually photographed the models getting ready. It was going well. We went to a local park and took some very cute photos of the guys solo and together. We broke for lunch and then went back to the B&B to do the nudes. One of the models was all for it. I think he had a crush on the other model. The other model, however, did NOT want to do any nudes - even implied. I wasn't happy. I mean I flew across the country for this and the model was not going to back out of our agreement. I got some great shots of both models. But I'm a man of my word and expect the people I work with to be the same. If you don't shoot nudes - then don't check that box on your Model Mayhem profile!'

Curious what you look for? Is it body, attitude, face or overall look? Are there days you just want to shoot a redhead, or a hairy guy, does your mood play into who you shoot?

'Interesting question. I think we are all drawn to a beautiful body and face. I would be lying to you if I said that I didn't look at someone's face and body before I decide to shoot them. However, attitude takes precedence. I want someone who is open minded and has energy. I want to convey something in an image that transcends a great body and face. I want that energy and connection.'

'If I can't connect to the man I'm shooting then it's not working for either of us. And when I say connect it's not a sexual thing. It's connecting as another man or human being. It's about trust and the model being open to the vulnerability that comes with nude modeling. I like confidence more than anything. After all, I photograph mostly straight men and they are more confident with themselves than most gay men I have photographed.'

'I've only shot maybe 1 or two redheads. So if there are any other there who want to be a part of my work, please get in touch with me! I like hair on the men that I photograph because it adds texture - to what could be I think could be a flat image. Plus it (hair) looks natural. I do love photographing a hairy man but if someone is naturally smooth, that's great too. Just don't shave your pubic hair off! Most of the straight men I photograph come to the photo session with no pubic hair. I guess they watch too much porn!'

'Jahn and I had a GREAT shoot and he had a very nice studio in Brooklyn NY. Jahn was very professional and it was a fun shoot! We made a lot of great work with some really awesome photos!'

This past May I had the pleasure of featuring model Curtis Carter in two pieces spotlighting his work with Jamtron Studio. (A Question of Character & The Shade of the Garage)  Recently, Curtis shot in New York with photographer and stylist Jahn Hall.   I am hoping to be able to feature the entire shoot when it's ready, but until then, wanted to share a taste of ripe juicy orange as an tempting appetiser.

The orange speedo was a fashion piece brought by Jahn.  He liked the color on Curtis and thought it went well with his blonde hair. I agree fully!  Although he can pull off any color, Curtis looks incredible in orange.  With his blonde hair along with the orange, Curtis had me craving a creamsicle,,, an equally tempting orange wrapped treat.

The Night Before: Gage by D L Scott Photography

So.. that model I mentioned above.  The model out of his underwear who inspired me to contact photographer and designer Dion Scott. Gage was not one of the strippers who inspired Dion's designs, but I think that you'll agree,  that some of Dion's images of Gage are most certainly inspirational.

Gage came to Dion's attention via word of mouth.  Dion was doing nude shots of a mutual friend who kept talking about Gage and how much he thought Dion would like him.  Dion didn't realise that the mutual friend had invited Gage over during their photoshoot.

'There was a knock at the door and I was like who is that?  I opened the door and there he was. Gage walked in and introduced himself. I was pleased. I walked away for a minute and came back to the living room to see Gage nude as well. My mind was swirling. I mean these straight boys walk into the house and just take off their clothes! Fine by me. '

Dion took a few shots of Gage and after his friend left, they really started getting creatively into the shoot.  Gage ate up the camera and loved the attention! It was getting late so they wrapped up and Dion drove Gage home.  It was during the drive he asked Gage about modeling some of the new prototypes of his underwear designs.  Gage was excited about the idea and they made plans to meet up and shoot again.  After he dropped him off, Gage texted through the night how much he was looking forward to getting in front of the camera again.

'Unfortunately it was a couple of months before I saw him again and could schedule a shoot. By that time, Gage had put on more muscle and was looking really good. I picked him up and we ate lunch and went back to my place for the shoot. I took a lot of pictures of him that day and we both looked at them before he left the house. We were both amazed at how well they turned out and how great he looked.'

'Gage is a kind soul with a big heart. We did more shoots for his own personal stash and he modeled the underwear more. Every time he was with me he always wanted to be in front of the camera. We did do a few shots outside here and there but mostly on the side of my house or the backyard, with the exception of the railroad tracks. We were leaving his house that day and I asked him if there was any place we could go that was isolated. He had already told me that he didn't mind taking nudes so I wanted to get him on the tracks.'

'I love the railroad tracks! We were driving down a side road and I found a clearing and stopped the car. We got our and walked on the tracks for a little bit. I wanted him to be shielded from any cars that may drive down the side of the road. We were blocked by bushes and I asked him to take off all of his clothes and stand in between the tracks and he did. I took some from the front, side, back and of course with him balancing on the tracks.'

'My favorites are the front and the image below. Gage is balanced, looking directly at the camera. Gage commands a presence with the picture of him facing the camera. The way he stands, the facial expression, everything about that pictures speaks to me. At one point that picture ended up on Tumblr I did not post it, but someone saw it and obviously liked it  enough to take and post. With 10k likes, it was encouraging to see the image, and my work appreciated and enjoyed.'

The Morning After: Blake by D L Scott Photography

'When I woke up the next morning I went and bought a sewing machine, fabric, and waistbands. I had a logo created for me and thus began EZIO.'

Now before we get to that morning after, we have to find out what happened the night before. Lets just say it included male strippers and in particular, the underwear they were wearing. Over the years, underwear has become more and more important in male fashion.  Once something worn but rarely seen, underwear has become something that is not only seen, but a piece of fashion that makes a statement and plays a role in how men feel about themselves and their bodies.  So... that night before...

'I was at a male strip club and was talking to dancers. They were getting ready to go on stage and they kept pulling their underwear down. When I asked them what they were doing, they told me that they were pulling down the underwear so they can show the V shape. These guys are in great shape. Of course at the time I was drinking, so I told them that I would go home and put a little underwear design together where the waist band is shaped into a V band and we would go from there. We all laughed a bit and they went on stage.'

That V shape not only inspired Dion Scott with his underwear design, but in creating EZIO bodywear, a new clothing design company with a focus on fashionable, comfortable and affordable body wear for men.  I think the Dion's V shape design is not only genius, but both practical, and incredibly sexy.   Full disclosure.... although I love Dion's bodywear, it wasn't EZIO underwear that first had me contacting him.  It was in fact, an incredible model out of his underwear.  That model, Gage, is featured below and he ended up modeling many of the early versions and prototypes for Dion's designs.

It was actually Dion's photography that came first.  Dion recalls shooting with an old film camera and learning through a lot of trial and error.  Although he knew Portland artist knew there were better ways to capture an image, Dion wanted to learn the original way.  It was after moving to Portland that he picked up his first digital camera, a Canon Rebel and began shooting landscapes, buildings, sunsets and things Dion was passionate about and caught his eye.  Dion feels the addition of the design piece has really propelled his photography to another level.

Once Dion had his design and prototypes created, he  needed bodies to model them so he could see the finish product. Dion says that he got wrapped up in the design and fit of the underwear and making sure that it was perfect. He began looking for more people to try them on, including using his photography page on Model Mayhem.  It wasn't MM but Dion's business partner that introduced to him Blake, the newest model he shot for the line.

'We started the shoot in my house, lights, backdrops, and all that good stuff. Blake is super easy to work for and takes direction very well. Always smiling and very lighthearted. We decided to take the shoot outside so we drove down to the tracks. This is about 18 miles from my house. It is not an isolated spot but we walked down a little ways. People saw me with the camera and asked what we were doing. I am always reluctant to say that I am shooting a man in his underwear because we get some lurkers coming around. This day it was busier in the park than I had imagined because it was the 4th of July. We did as many photos as we could before people started asking me to take pictures of them in their underwear. LOL. I had to explain that this was for a business so I gave them a business card. :-)'

'After the tracks we went to Rooster Rock, a clothing optional area.  We were lucky to have the weather on our side that day. It was a little cool when we started but the sun peeked out a few times making it a little more tolerable for Blake.  We did a lot of great pictures close to the water and in the brush. He loves the attention so we gave it all to him. Plus I love a good model who is really open to do the work. We finished our shoot, taking a total of 1900 pictures between the two of us. We don't always take that many but as you can tell he is a really good subject to work with!'

Brett Gleason: The Dream Is ALIVE

If you're a regular reader of FH you have no doubt seen some of my features, and listened to songs from musician Brett Gleason. We're used to seeing Brett behind the keyboard, but The Dream is Alive is one of two guitar based songs on his new collection Manifest. A ten song cycle about being Human on Earth. Is that you? MANIFEST = Sex + Death + Love + Time + Consciousness. The Dream is Alive is a wee bit addictive, and I have been listening on Brett's kickstarter again and again as I worked on today's posts. Give it a listen for yourself HERE:

The Great Outdoors by rig500

For most of the country, mid-July means the height of heat and humidity. Just like the snow, and the cold of winter, extreme weather tends to separate people into those who love and embrace it, and those who hate and complain about it. Where I work, I hear daily complaints about the AC making it too cold, and for others, not cold enough. Living in the North West of the continent, I have learned that as soon as I start loving, or hating a weather pattern, it is bound to quickly change.

Recently, I saw an image on Model Mayhem that embedded itself in my mind for a few days. So much so, I had to contact the photographer about including it on FH.  The image, (second to last one below) was a beautiful shot of a naked man lying on the sand at the beach.  It didn't look like the man planned on sun bathing, there was no towel or blanket below him and his underwear was just tossed in the dry sea grass beside him.

There are thousands of shots of naked men at the beach.  This one spoke to me for a number of reasons.  It seemed so organic and natural.  I was reminded that I have yet to get to the beach summer and I could almost feel the heat from the sun and sand that the model must have felt during the shoot. The image had me feeling a bit down, sad the summer was flying by and I had yet to really get out and do some of the things I love to do during the summer.

Those same people yacking about the AC will in a mere two or three weeks be discussing the 'chill' they are starting to feel in the air.  Where I live, signs of Autumn can start appearing in early to mid August.  After feeling a bit melancholy, the image then had me feeling inspired, determined to book off and take some time before the summer passes me by.   I usually take my vacation at the end of August, but I am not going to wait til then to make my way to the beach.

Fresno photographer Ed from rig500 doesn't have to worry so much about rushing for a beach day. California is known for it's endless summer's and Ed is able to shoot outside all year long. Ed used to live just two blocks from the beach, which is where the image that inspired this piece, was taken. The subject was a model Ed connected with at a photographers group and was taken with a film camera before he switched to digital.

Ed has been shooting for many years, but still considers himself an amateur photographer who shoots for the pure joy of it. Ed loves to do travel photography and doesn't have a studio which is why he shoots mainly outdoors using the natural light to cascade over the bodies he shoots.

Despite not considering himself a professional, there is almost a panoramic, 3D feel to so m any of Ed's images.  In many of his shots, I not only visually enjoyed what I saw, and physically felt the heat of the sun.  I could almost feel the dryness of the grass and the lush green of the tree's, even the sound of the cool blue water hitting the sides of the air mattress in the swimming pool.  Inspiration to get outside and experience each of these sensations for myself before the season of summer comes to it's inevitable conclusion.

'When I lived in San Francisco I used to belong to a group of photographers and models who used to meet once a month to do a shoot. Photographers ranged from beginners to professionals and the models were friends, men who wanted to model, etc. The number of photographers and models would vary depending on who was available. Basically it served as a network group as we would also set up individual shoots.'

I have been following the work of model Maximillian Silberman since he first burst on the scene at 18 a few years ago.  Max has that boy next door, that bad boy next door, yet still exudes a humanity, along with intense sexual imagery with his images.   Seeing the image above by Jon Wong for Vukan Magazine had me inspired to dig up a few of my favorite images of Max.
