Michelangelo DiNapoli: Into The Woods

'Into the woods
to get my wish,
I don't care how,
The time is now'

Be careful what you wish for..... In the musical Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine delve into the darker undertones or our childhood bedtime stories exploring beyond the surface into the characters motivations, pain and longings and of course what happens to them after 'happily ever after.' The Woods, the setting, but also a metaphor the places, both literally and emotionally that we all go to satisfy our longings and needs.

What better place then, for model Michelangelo DiNapoli to enter into the woods then in the Meat Rack, a section of forest between the Pines and Cherry Grove on Fire Island New York. This particular area of woods is known as a place of desire fulfillment, a dark thick forest, you enter, then exit happily, although not usually, for ever after.

‘Armani suit or birthday suit, no difference’

I was first introduced to the work of New York model last year when profiling his work with photographers Kevin Hoover and Rick Day for tMf#7. Michelangelo knows how create a great image, his savory body the bait, his beautiful soulful brown eyes, the lure to hook you in. In addition to his physical attributes, what most impressed me about Michelangelo was his determination. Even when told that he was too short or too ethnic looking, Michelangelo continued to follow his passion, working and creating an impressive body of work with some of the preeminent capturers of the male form.

I love these shots from New York photographer Ron Amato. Within the foliage, within the tree's and on the beach, Amato beautifully captures Michelangelo as if he belonged there. A natural, and sensual, inhabitant of the forest. The images, like the woods, are lush and green and there such detail and depth they almost appear as if a 3D painting. Because of the weather and the lighting, Ron and Michelangelo shot twice, once at 6a.m, which ended early due to the overcast sky, clouds and drizzle. You can see the foreboding sky in the last two images on the beach taken that morning. They got together again at almost 6p.m, to bring in the evening sun, after the days rain finally ended.

The second shoot took place deep in forest, and even with all the trees, there was plenty of sunshine to warm and light Michelangelo's naked body. In this particular section of woods it is not exactly unexpected to run into the odd nude man, or men for that matter. It was still however a nice surprise for others who ventured into the woods, to come across Michelangelo at work. The first shoot included a cigarette smoking spectator on the boardwalk, clearly happy with his early morning view. The second shoot, possibly from the mornings positive reviews, had an even larger audience.

'The men who walked through the woods, looking for sex, stopped to watch our shoot--some stayed longer than others, some stayed too long until Ron stopped and gave them a look, or until we moved to another location. I got lots of attention, which created a great sexy mood for the shoot. I used it to my advantage. The men were pleasantly surprised to see a photo shoot in the woods with a completely nude model.'

'It was the first time that I shot in the woods and there were a lot of mosquitos and I was bitten everywhere. I had OFF on me, but they were biting me anyway. Most were from me posing nude in the woods, not an ideal situation and location. Although uncomfortable, especially being nude in the mud or on a tree and with all the bug bites, I would do it again! We created amazing images, sexy and artist, some of my favorites. There was a sexual energy that I hope came across in the photos. I was nude, outdoors, in public, with lots of horny men watching. It was a great experience.'

Effervescence by Mark Leighton

Last year, I wrote a small piece entitled The End Of Summer featuring the images from photographer Mark Leighton. For many of us, the summer is drawing to a close, officially ending at midnight this Saturday.

Given one of my goals with FH is to focus on outside and location images, I often find myself enjoying seeking out images, and photo shoots that represent the seasons as they pass. With summer winding down I contacted Mark last month about returning to his imagery, especially his breathtaking views from the southern coast region of Algarve in Mark's home in Portugal.

For many of us, one of the most enjoyable parts of the summer is being able to spend time at the beach. It is not just the sun and swimming and incredible views but also the feel, taste and sound. I have spent many summer mornings woken by the sound of waves breaking along the shore. For me, this sound echoes through all my best memories of summer.

That exact moment, after the build up, as it rises, swells and then crests. The wave then crashes, exploding in burst energy spreading frothy bubbles and discharging fizz and white foam as the wave eventually shrinks back into the ocean. It will rise again, but never exactly in quite the same way.

There is something so magnificent, and even a little sad, that these captured moments of breaking waves are once in a life time events. Each one so incredible, yet experienced by so few. I guess that is one of the most powerful things about great images. Someone in the North East in America, someone who had to put their furnace on for the first time yesterday, could enjoy a never to be repeated moment from a breaking wave, and the adonis over 3000 miles away.

I love when a show knows it's audience and Arrow's season two promotional posters target exactly whey so many of us love the show. Arrow star Stephen Amell along with cast members Colton Hayes, David Ramsey and Manu Bennett putting their best pecs forward to promote season 2.

It is just too bad Grant Gustin, recently cast as The Flash, didn't join them for the shoot!

The Co-Star Cougar:

Cougars aren't a new phenomenon, especially in Hollywood, whenever there is money, and young cubs in search of fame, cougars will be on the prowl. An excellent stalk-and-ambush predator, the cougar pursues a wide variety of prey. Ever since cub Kutcher was caged and captured, cougars have gained the unfair reputation of stalking cubs much younger than themselves, but there is a new breed of cougar making waves in Hollywood, and age is is not a factor in their choice of prey. The Co-star cougar is caging men left and right, using and riding their fame until they find an even bigger cub to mount. The co-star cougar starts by caging their television co-stars, sometime making their way through the entire cast. Television cubs however are not the ultimate bounty, as you can clearly see from the examples below, most Co-Star cougars ultimately are looking for a target from the big screen as the last catch.

That you can't wear white after Labor Day?

When shooting in the Atlantic, along the breathtaking beaches in in Lagos, Portugal, white is really the only option, unless of course, you wear nothing at all. In part 2 of showcasing the incredible seaside images from photographer Mark Leighton, when wet, wearing white is truly the only option.

And Just Because...

Since Matt Damon and Michael Douglas are nominated for best actor in a television movie or mini-series for Behind The Candelabra, I thought it might be interesting to look at the first time both actors skinned on screen through their most recent nude scene in Candelabra. Douglas first took it off in his first major screen role in 1969's Hail Hero and Damon in School Ties in 1992.

'I love starting with dark images and painting them with just enough light to tease the mind.'

Earlier this month I featured the first set of images of Enrique by Robert James. (Not Quite Home Alone). In the first set, Enrique was sitting down, taking it easy and relaxing after a hard long day. With this, the second set of images, Enrique stands, stretches and poses in an incredible display of movement and body extension captured masterfully by Studio James.

Body Lines: Bleuphoenix by Andrew Buchanan

'My photographic work is fairly simple and uncomplicated, and there are thousands of photographers out there, doing astonishing creative and detailed, pin-sharp work that puts my efforts to shame. I have one camera, no studio, no assistants and can just about find my way around iPhoto to touch up my images before I publish them on Model Mayhem.'

London photographer Andrew Buchanan is correct in that there are many skilled photographers doing astonishing work capturing the male form. I would have to add however that although there is most certainly a connection between skill and results, there really isn't one between results and simplicity. There are artists who use the most expensive state of the art brushes, tools and colors, yet cannot seem to evoke much passion on the canvas. Another artist, might have just a sheet of loose leaf and a pencil and yet create a magnificent piece of art.

In Andrew's case, is it not a pencil but his camera, and although he may see his process as uncomplicated, the resulting images have simple, yet majestic beauty. Andrew calls his new focus essentially a private project, one to prove to himself that he has what takes to do nude work. Thankfully, the response has been very positive, leading Andrew to share the private project with others, and with FH.

Dancer Bleuphoenix on ModelMayhem has an incredible body and look, beyond perfect for a photographer looking to explore the realm of shooting the male form. The 24 year old model grew up in the North West of England, trained at London Contemporary Dance School and began modelling while in his second year of University.

Like many new models, Bleuphoenix began modeling for TFP for just a few photographers but it quickly evolved to paid shoots including catwalk, art, hair, fashion, editorial and dance. Bleuphoenix enjoys modelling as a separate art form and doesn't generally just do a shoot for dance pictures, but is happy to do them as part of a shoot or if dance comes in handy for some more imaginative poses

'Bleuphoenix is one of my favourite models. He is a dancer so, not surprisingly, he is in very good shape... and, of course, his other physical attributes are there for everyone to see and enjoy! Friendly and flexible, professional and focused, Tom has a broad smile and joyous laugh that lights up the room. I know that many other photographers share my admiration for him and his approach to his work.'
Andrew Buchanan

Even when not aiming for specific dance poses, what I love so much about Andrew's images of Bleuphoenix is how movement and body lines are so core to each shot. Although Bleuphoenix is beautifully long and lean, in dance, lines are not just about the extension of body parts. It is as much about how a dancers limbs extend through the space in which they are dancing and how they use, and fill up the space around them.

Through Andrew's lens, Bleuphoenix uses his body to beautifully inhabit every space, whether in a large empty room, or on the streets of London. For Bleuphoenix it was a positive experience and enjoyed working on Andrews concepts as well as some ideas that they collaborated on together.

'Andrew was a pleasure to work with and I hope to work with him again in the future!

'I did a two-hour shoot with him and loved every minute of it. I don't have a very large shooting space in my house, so it forces me to be particularly creative - but I make do very well. We started off in the front room where, as for other models, I had rolled back the carpet, exposing the bare, varnished wooden floor; taken some artwork off the walls; and cleared away some furniture.'

'He needed some basic portraits for his CV, so we did those and then, he got naked for the rest of the shoot. We did several standing and sitting poses, including the pose that has generated the most views on my Model Mayhem portfolio. Full frontal, head tilted to one side, looking invitingly at the camera -it is a simple, but beautiful, image.'

I hadn't heard of actor Brant Daugherty (above by Adam Bouska) until I turned on DWTS last week, but he certainly was a nice surprise. As usual, I vowed not to get sucked in, but tuned in to get a wee fix of Tristan MacManus and Val Chmerkovskiy. I ended up getting caught up in the emotional pull of seeing Valerie Harper and some of the other performances of the night.

Although there are some good dancers (too good maybe) my heart belongs to Amber Riley. Shamefully underused on Glee, Amber is an incredible performer. Some might be surprised at her moves, but Glee watchers are fully aware the girl can do pretty much anything, and do it superbly well!

'Revenge is the single most satisfying feeling in the world!'
J.R. Ewing

After watching (most) of the EMMY Awards last night, I think Larry Hagman and Jack Klugman got off easy. Whomever decided that there should awards for the top 5 deaths of 2012 should be removed of any future EMMY duties. Last nights show, which honored almost as many dead people as alive ones, was one of the worst outings of the show that I can remember. Neil Patrick Harris seemed on auto pilot, clearly indicating he has hosted one award show too many. (His song and dance #'s are all starting to sound identical) Carrie Underwood, usually a showstopper, never quite connected musically, or emotionally with her song. With the exception of a sparse few memorable minutes from Fey and Poehler, Conan O'Brien and Nurse Jackie's Merritt Weaver the show was a train wreck from the opening unfunny video montage on.
