Weaving Through: Joel by Green Carnation Photography

'The poet William Blake dubbed them the Dark Satanic Mills, with their intertwined histories of labour & colonial exploitation.'

I love featuring images of models in long forgotten and abandoned locations. Some of my favorite features have focused on artists who have brought to life previously dead spaces with their images of the male form. There is something especially beautiful about the energy that a young and alive naked body brings to a space with a hardened history. I did a piece in 2013 featuring Tyler, posing in a long closed Colorado mine. (Mine) I couldn't help but think of the locations history, and of all of the miners who descended each day into darkness in order to survive, pay their bills and feed their families.

Last December I had the pleasure of featuring Green Carnation's work with model Joel Nestaras. (A Late Autumn's Day). For that shoot, Joel was captured by a beautiful lake in a green oasis in the otherwise industrialized heartland of England's Black Country, a name believed to come from the soot from the heavy industries that once covered the area. When Green Carnation told me that he was sending on images of Joel shot on location at a former Victorian Cotton Mill, my mind first went to the beauty of all the incredible clothing that must have been created from the yarn and cloth that would have been once woven and spun there. But like that lake in Black country, nature's beauty often masks a locations history.

When we hear the word 'Victorian', we often think of Kings and Queens, mansions and castles, carriages and lavish balls. A simpler time, defined by proper etiquette and class. But class didn't mean 'classy' during the Victoria Era, it meant a label that was almost impossible to escape from. Although the clothing at Lancashire mill may have been lavish and rich, the people who worked there, most certainly were not. The hours were long and work painful. There were also very few labour laws at the time, meaning children were often used to jobs for cheap wages.

'The poet William Blake dubbed these the Dark Satanic Mills (with their intertwined histories of labour & colonial exploitation - & the mechanistic mind-frame they symbolized). Opposing this he celebrated the bodily form alongside freedom & imagination. It seemed fitting then that despite its dark heritage, the light-filled space should instead be employed to invoke a celebration of youthful liberty & beauty in the radiant form of Joel!'

Green Carnation shares that even though the Mill wasn't as colorful and picturesque as the location on the lake, the space was visually interesting with may area's and textures to beautifully contrast with Joel's skin and naked body. GC reports this was short, laid back shoot, following the sun's journey around the building as it created interesting pools of shadow and light. The only note of tension during the peaceful afternoon came when shooting in a public corridor, one in which workmen were wheeling in goods in and out of a nearby service lift. 'We had to snatch pictures in brief moments of privacy whilst they shunted their wares between floors! Joel though seemed to positively feed on the frisson of excitement generated by the threat of impending exposure!'

'The skies are usually a yearlong blanket of grey there, but we enjoyed a rare treat as the clouds parted, & luminous soft sunshine flooded through the immense windows. The warm light played off the cream-white brick walls & wooden flooring, wonderfully complimenting Joel's tanned body. It was quite a heady sensorial experience. I liked the contrast between the patina of time etched over centuries on the buildings solid Victorian surfaces (with its peeling paint and worn textures); against Joel's delightful sylphlike young physique & vivacious spirit.'

Alistair Brammer: Last Night of the World

'Why God? Why this face?
Why such beauty in this place?
I liked my mem'ries as they were
But now I'll leave rememb'ring her'

I have loved the music of Miss Saigon for as long as I can remember. I was still a teenager when I first saw a performance on the 1991 Tony's and went right out and bought the soundtrack. Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce were incredible, but I was especially taken by the powerful voices of Peter Polycarpou as John and Simon Bowman as Chris. I was especially moved by Bowman's tenor voice that cut right through me when he hit some powerful places with his voice. I never played Chris myself, but I did get the chance to sing a couple of the songs, (as John) while in a 'Salute to Broadway' show while in University.

I replayed the soundtrack over and over and finally saw the show on Broadway in the spring of 2000. Salonga had left, but had returned for the performance that I saw. I am not sure who played Chris in this production as there had been a few replacements since the original run. I have to say that although I loved the show, I loved listening to the soundtrack even more. There were pieces of the story created in my mind, a stage show was not able to replicate. That being said, I would love to hit New York again to see the incredibly hot, and immensely talented Alistair Brammer in the role of Chris.

Alistair certainly isn't new to the role, and has been playing Chris on the London stage for years. Yesterday, he and co-star Eva Maria Noblezada performed 'Last Night of the World' on the today show, and Andrew posted a link to the video from Playbill on his Twitter page.

Alistair's tenor voice cuts right through me, the same way I felt listening to the original soundtrack. After watching the video last night, I immediately headed to Amazon to order the blu-ray of the 20th anniversary performance at London's West End, with Alistair of course, in the role of Chris. Miss Saigon is back on Broadway for a limited run at the Broadway Theatre. Check out the shows official site HERE:

PIEL, Spanish word for 'skin'

Since first discovering his work with Jonny, (pictured) I have been featuring the work of photographer Alex Hilbert, whenever, and as often as, I get the chance. I loved Alex's images of Jonny so much, I separated the images in series of three posts (check the links below) last spring. Alex is currently working on putting together his new book, PIEL, a sensual photography book showcasing a beautiful collection of images of stunning young men, as seen through the lens of the Northern California photographer.

Alex has started a Kickstarter to help raise money to shoot new models for the book. Check out his Kickstarter HERE: Even if you can't donate, you'll want to check out the page for a great overview of the many incredible men Alex has shot over the last few years!

Shenanagans: Alex by New Manhattan Studios

'Let The Shenanagans Begin!'

Yes, spell checker might correct the word to shenanigans, but if it's St Patrick's Day, and you happen to be a sizzling hot leprechaun, all of your manky deeds of the day are best described as shenanagans with a 'a', not an 'i'. Last St. Paddy's day, we celebrated with New Manhattan Studios emerald laced shot of Alex Corso as Los Colombian Leprechaun.

After a bit of bugging, (not too much) Wes went back to the shoot to edit a few new shots to celebrate this years holiday full of shenanagans and malarkey. Although Colombian, Alex certainly possesses the luck of the Irish with regards to his career. Not only is he one sexy and jammy Leprechaun in front of the camera, he also spends his work days surrounded by gorgeous men in the studio as a PA and photographer for the studio.

Psst....A little troll, (not a leprechaun, they don't spread gossip) recently told me that NMS is moving to new digs. Hopefully soon we can see the results of Alex's hard work in his new surroundings. Hopefully we'll also see more fellow leprechaun's that Alex assists and photographs. (Not to mention his job related duty applying make-up to their pots of gold.)

Exceedingly Irish: Seamus O'Reilly by JDT Photo

Séamus:
(Irish pronunciation: ʃeːməs) a male first name of Celtic origin. It is the Gaelic equivalent of the name James.
O'Reilly
(Irish: Ó Raghallaigh) is a group of families, ultimately all of Irish Gaelic origin, who were historically the kings of East Bréifne in what is today County Cavan.

I can almost here Friends Phoebe Buffay asking 'Could he be anymore Irish?' When I was thinking of the perfect Irishman to help celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I could not think of anyone better suited than Seamus O'Reilly. Although Seamus was born in Chicago, his name, not to mention his fair skin and physical features bring together so many qualities we traditionally connect with hot Irish men!

'I’ve got a friends who told me that if I ever shaved that they’d stop talking to me. My fire-bush has gotten me more photo shoots than anything else, because that’s something that not a lot of people have.'

I remembered that Jesse from JDT Photography had previously sent on these shots of Seamus and today seemed the perfect day to share them. I love the way Jesse so beautifully captures his models, especially when photographing the male form outside. Although these images were not in Georgia, the lush green has you feeling like you could be in a forest in Ireland.

I have seen Seamus captured in many photo shoots, but I think Jesse's is by far one of my favorites. Because of his work in adult films, Seamus is generally shot in studio, with a focus on his harder edges. I love the softness Jesse captured, and the quiet beauty of Seamus alone in the fields and the woods. Even his eyes are softer, projecting less of the sexual energy he is known for, and more of the peace and beauty of both the moment, and then environment surrounding him.

I think my next Netflix binge watch just might be The OA. Not sure if anyone has checked it out, but I have been reading some good reviews, especially for 21 year old Dublin native Patrick 'Paddy' Gibson' Gibson plays Steve Winchell, a drug dealing bully who unleashes his pain through violence. Gibson, who some may have seen on The Tudors is getting great reviews for his role in the supernatural mystery.

AANE Photography: First, & Second, Crack At It

-First Crack: Matt C-

As part of FH's 2017 first theme, I have been asking many of my favorite photographers about their first time shooting a nude model. It is always interesting to ask models about taking it off for the first time, but I am equally fascinated about the experience of the photographer. Were they nervous, excited or completely calm? Were there questions or concerns about the location, or how to approach a model about an idea or concept. How did they choose the model in question and how would they ensure they were on the same page creatively and with expectations. For ANNE Photography's Mike, many of his shoot occur while traveling 'on the road', which doesn't always allow time to get to know models prior to shooting. Mike's first nude shoot was with Matt C, whose boyfriend joined in at the end of the shoot. When Mike sent me on his comments about working with Matt, he ended with this sentence. 'If you want to hear about my second shoot, later that day, let me know, it was an interesting story...' Of course I wanted to know, and thought you might as well.

I began model photography in 2014. Prior to that, all of my models had been people I knew or myself. To be honest, I wasn't hitting it out of the park. I signed up with Model Mayhem on January 1, 2014. It took six months until they approved my account. It was a bit of the chicken and the egg situation. I couldn't get approved without a variety of models, but I couldn't find models without a portfolio. I finally resorted to using pictures of my family. I did a couple of shoots that summer. I was on the road in St. Louis at the time, so I shot Khoudian there. He was the first model I asked to remove his shirt. I was so nervous asking that. I felt like a pornographer. In November I went to South Africa for the miles, and shot Kyros. He was the first model I asked to pose in underwear. I did ask him to remove the underwear so I could get a more revealing shot, but he was covered in a sheet.

My first true nude shoots took place on January 8 and 9, 2015. I was in New York with my husband and his family. We have a time share in Manhattan, so we took a long weekend there. I has setup five or six models through Model Mayhem. I arranged to meet each one at the Starbucks down the street from the timeshare. My husband took the late morning and early afternoon to get tickets from TKTS to see a show. Matt C, the very first model to show up, came with his boyfriend. He said he had nothing to do, and asked if I would mind if he had him tag along. I was too naive to know that this was his chaperone. Matt was a small guy of Indian decent, who weighs 100 pounds soaking wet. I understand why he would want someone along.

When we got back to the room, we made small talk, and soon got to work. I had already discussed what I wanted to shoot with Matt in several emails. He was comfortable doing nude work, and I started to put my camera to work. I was still not very good, didn't have the proper lenses, and didn't truly understand F stops, shutter speeds, and ISO settings. So, unfortunately, much of what I shot is either too dark, or blurry. After about 15 minutes or so, Matt's boyfriend said he was hoping to model too, but he needed shots for his portfolio.

I offered to do some head shots for free, and I got some OK shots of him. Then about 10 minutes later he asked if I would shoot both of them nude. I almost fell over, worried that this was some soft of orgy thing. I had never shot one nude guy, let alone two. I was eager to try, but was very nervous and suspicious. We negotiated a rate, and we got to work.

I soon realized that I had nothing to worry about. They truly loved each other, and I think wanted to have some pictures together. I also think they enjoyed themselves, because my first nude shoot turned into my first erotic shoot as both of them got aroused. I got a handful of good pictures from that shoot. I was so green, I didn't ask for an ID or a release. I got verbal confirmation from several models, and Matt C finally sent me a photo of his release allowing me to use the photos in a book, but no frontals on the Internet. Several models also sent me their ID's, including Matt and his boyfriend. I enjoyed my first nude shoot. It was about 1 hour long, and afterward I was shaking I was so nervous, but I learned a few things.

-Second Crack: Victor-

The second shoot of the day took place in the afternoon. Once again, I met the model at Starbucks. Almost immediately I felt something was off. His hygiene wasn't great, and he looked out of it. When we got back to the room and started working, he was distracted. He wouldn't put down his phone, and when he did pose, he looked like he was high. Several times I offered to stop the session, feeling that I wasn't really getting anything worthwhile. Each time he acted as if I was crazy to want to stop.

When I asked for particular poses, he seemed dense, and asked me to move him into position. I felt I had had enough, and told him we were done, and that he could get dressed. He went into the bathroom again, and I started to review the pictures. He came out of the bathroom, with an erection, and stroking is penis. I figured he might want to try an erotic pose, remembering my previous session sort of was that way. When I got my camera ready, he said "I thought you said we were done."

He asked to review the pictures with me, and as I sat at the desk, he hovered over my shoulder and continued to stroke his penis. I told him, I was not interested, and that I was happily married, and to please leave. At first he refused, and I became frightened. Now mind you, I am not a small person, and I went through basic training at Fort Benning when I was 19, so I probably could handle myself. But I also don't like confrontation, and was scared. I told him to leave again, and he asked for a hug. I said no, and became firm and told him to leave. Finally he left.

After he left, I immediately told my husband about the situation. I was thinking this would be my last shoot ever. The next day he started emailing and texting asking to do another shoot. I said I was busy. I sent him the pictures, and he went through and complained about almost every picture. I was new and naive, and didn't know how the whole thing worked, so I let him say no to a whole host of perfectly good pictures.

Several times during the year he would bother me asking me for another shoot, and I finally told him that he made me very uncomfortable, and I didn't want to work with him ever again. To this day, I don't know if I even paid him. If the next two sessions I had had not been so comfortable and good, this would have been the last shoot.

Winter Beach Day: Petr by Mark Leighton

'I prefer my footprints in the sand... not the snow'

The first time I went to Florida, it was a mid January trip with the family of one of my best friends. Given we flew down from the North East, the mid sixty temperatures felt like a tropical paradise. We headed to the beach and dove into the water thinking nothing of it. I remember one of hotel clerks laughing at us returning back after our day at the beach, telling us that it was usually only tourists in the ocean during the winter.

Although there was a rare snowfall, (ok, just a few flakes) this past January, usually Algarve remains warm and beautiful during the winter. It's high fifties and low sixties may seem lovely compared to winter here, it does make it harder finding models who;ll get naked and frolic happily in the surf. So... then what does a location photographer do in Winter...in Mark Leighton's case, it's to work on his editing skills.

When I recently shot Mark a few model names I was interested in featuring, Mark was in the middle of revamping his website and working on new edits of many images in his gallery's. Mark says that new(ish) technology allows him to find useable shots in his archives that he had previously dismissed. Based on the spectacular image above, Petr was one of the models I was hoping to feature and luckily, Mark had recently completed re-editing, and updating Petr's gallery. As I was piecing together the images for this story I was also struck that if you squint just a bit, the white fabric almost looks like a wave of snow flowing across the sand and over Petr's body.

'In the past I found the editing process a bit of a chore but now I am getting a some satisfaction from "re-cycling" my older images. Looking back, I was appalled at the standard of some of my old edits, and am finding I get more out of some of the images by using new technology and better editing skills.'

I didn't watch any version Big Brother over the last year or so. I skipped the last US version, last years Canadian edition, and I haven't had time to watch a UK or Australian version in years. I used to love the show, but my time, and enthusiasm became depleted. I decided to watch the premiere of Big Brother Canada 5, which began this past year. (US fans can download or try it on Roku)

I decided to check it out, not because of the lame science fiction, we're in a space ship theme, but because half of the house guests were some old favorites, including my BBCan3 crush Kevin. (See my previous posts on Kevin HERE:) I also love Neda and Ika who they also brought back. So far I am enjoying it, Kevin is laying fairly low (as were his wet undies in the first HOH).

The cutest new house guest was (yes... was) Mark. Bartender (and would be model) Mark Chrysler was a surprising guy to get the boot first for a number of reasons. Big Brother is known for it's manipulation of the game and usually they keep the eye candy around for awhile. Mark also seemed like a nice guy, and someone that could have been fun to watch. I don't usually like those 'bring back a house guest twists' but if might mean a shirtless Mark comes back, bring it on!

I have now traveled with Rachel (Emily Blunt) three times on that train. First, in Paula Hawkins novel, then last fall in the theatre. Last week, I joined The Girl on the Train for a third time on TV on demand. I liked the book, but admit I did struggle to finish it. I enjoy the theatre viewing, but not as much as watching last week. Character dramas, especially thrillers, are my favorite film genre but it took a second look to truly appreciate how well each character was both written, and portrayed.

Evans and Emily Blunt

Give a take a scene or two when you're (intentionally) trying to tell Anna and Megan apart, each of three female leads are unique and interesting women, all worthy of a story worth following. Equally well written are the three male supporting characters, all played by incredibly talented, and incredibly hot actors. the only real nudity is some quick and distant skin from Luke Evans, but Evans is a standout none the less.

If I were playing Marry/Kill/Sex, Evans would be sex for sure, but Theroux and Ramírez would not be far behind. Here, with some of my favorite nude scenes from each, are the men, not on, but viewed from the train.

Warrior: Daniel Jensen by Damien Manspeaker

'That's when I saw the potential I had. I started doing more photo shoots with him and then a talent agent found me.'

The 'him' in the quote above is artist and photographer Damien Manspeaker, and it was Damien's images of Daniel that helped draw the 21 year old model so much positive attention when they were first on social media. My interview with Daniel earlier in the month (Adrenaline Seeker) also gained a bit of attention, in large part due to Damien's work. Damien says that he grew up surrounded by art, music skateboarding and experimenting with creativity on many levels. This resulted in not only his work as an artist, but also his performing, (and photographing)with the Grammy Nominated band Green Jello which has led to Damien touring with the band throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and the UK.

'I took what inspired me and continued to experiment. I tried stop motion animation and explored editing and compositing. In the end, I went everywhere with my camera and still do. Set photography and documenting the creative process means a lot to me. It really feels so inspiring. Id love to make people happy with my art and photography. I love documenting life and people in general and it is one of my favorite forms.'

Damien's captures of Jensen are not only visually breathtaking, they also absorb the energy and excitement of the moment... just barely contained by the restraints of a photograph. Damien's images are also personal, reflecting his belief that as an artist, one of his goals is to capture the moments that mean the most to people. Damien is also a friend of Daniel's and thus, have both shared experiences and passions.

With Daniel's incredible body and look, it is no wonder so many photographers want to photograph him. Knowing Daniel however, makes Damien keenly aware of how Daniel likes to use his body to push boundaries and his own physical limits. This was certainly the case with this shoot which began while Damien was just hanging out at Daniel's home. Daniel asked him to look inside a box that he had, and inside, it was completely filled with the weapons of a ninja warrior. The two friends began playing and doing ninja stunts and the results, this incredible set of images.
