Return to Twin Peaks

'The owls are not what the seem.'

I distinctly remember the evening of April 8th, 1990. I was still in school, and working on my homework in my bedroom in the basement. I hadn't heard of the new TV show premiering that night, but David Lynch's new Gothic soap opera was playing on the 14 inch color television in the corner of my room. I think I noticed the music first, but it was when Sarah Palmer (the great Grace Zabriskie) began wailing with grief, that I looked up, paid attention, and was hooked for the rest of the episode.

Of course Sarah was grieving over the news her daughter Laura had died and Laura's death would be the mystery that carried the shows first season. I have to admit, that my interest in the show, and the story, diminished greatly as season one progressed, so much so, that I don't remember even watching season 2. But that pilot was superb, so much so I find myself looking forward to the show's return on Showtime this May.

Dana with co-star Mädchen Amick

Twin Peaks had it's share of hot men including; Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean and James Marshall. The guy that grabbed my attention though was Bobby Briggs (no relation...) played by actor Dana Ashbrook. Dana looked like a model, tall, thin with his chiseled face and beautiful huge eyes. He also sported a great 90's head of wavy hair that grabbed my attention. Dana, along with Kyle and James are returning for the show's re-boot, and except for the grey hair, Dana's appeal, and that great face of his, remain crush worthy.

Dana with co-star Leo Johnson, looking very much men from the 90's

Dana continued working steadily after Twin Peaks left the air, but except for a short stint on Dawson's Creek, not really in projects that I remember watching. In doing a little research I discovered Dana did have one brief nude scene in 1995's Comfortably Numb. Just a brief butt flash, but enough to have me dig up a copy and do some caps below.

'A lot of models think they do not have good butts because it is a difficult body part to see unless you happen to have a three-way mirror around. So I do try to "showcase" that area to prove them incorrect if I think that is the case. It is also an area that sometimes becomes more sexy with clothing and sometimes the back... is better than the front.'

Earlier this year, I posted part of one of photographer Michal Boothe's series of images themed 'Behind the Curve.' There are many reason why so many of us are attracted to the male butt. Some of these reasons are obvious, including it being one of two area's on the male body considered a private parts, a part that we are all expected to keep covered when in public.

It is natural to have a curiosity about things that are hidden. Investigating and exploring this curiosity however, can be difficult, especially if like me, you were still in the closet during those prime investigating teen age years. It was always risky to stare at a guys crotch given if you could see him, he could look right back at you. But the butt was much easier to gaze at, to study and explore. You usually didn't have to worry about the butt's owner seeing you check him out, it was usually other people around who were more likely to catch you staring.

I had many hours of staring at ass's, especially when the ass in question was sitting right in front of me in a long and boring Economics class. Although they were covered, you often got a hint of crack and depending on their pants, could get a pretty good idea of size, shape and degree of round, or flatness. Corduroy had the ability to fool, but jeans, and especially dress pants (usually explored during a boring Sunday morning at church) gave a great preview of what lurked below.

The other reason butts were so appealing was it wasn't all that difficult to see one. In high school locker rooms, even guys who were a bit shy about walking around with their penis in view, held their towels tightly around their fronts, but were usually not as bothered about covering their back ends. Straight guys especially, didn't necessarily see their ass's of objects of obsession, at least around other guys, and flashing and mooning were common amongst the guys I hang our with. It may not be as common today, but when I was growing up, many guys, even when with both sexes, often just turned around, with their butts facing out, when changing from underwear to bathing suit when at a lake or the beach.

As I said in my previous piece, the male butt is also one of the curviest parts of the male form, one that lends itself to far more creative and dynamic poses than almost any other part of the male body. The butt is supposed to be fleshy, bouncy, plump. With many men, especially fitness models, each and every muscle and part of their body is worked hard to be as firm as possible. Having almost any part of your body described as 'hard' is generally considered a compliment, except of course....your ass.

Richard Rothstein: Beyond Heteronormative

'Working with Tyler, who is very open with his sexuality, was a bit of breakthrough for me and my art.'

Tumescence
Model: Tyler
Location: East Village, NYC
Words and Images:Richard Rothstein

'As a queer photographer and artist, I still have a long way to go before I can shed myself of heteronormative boundaries. And while I will likely never fully succeed at that, I will always keep trying. Certainly, the greatest challenge is expressing and celebrating queer male sexuality and sensuality pushing beyond the heteronormative. And certainly the most controversial and challenging aspect of this exploration is tumescence.'

'Heteronormative art easily and traditionally celebrates female nudity from the whore to the virgin. The vagina and it’s various representations represents life, birth, motherhood and creation. The penis, of course, commonly represents aggression, threat, rape and even war. But all of that is primarily from a heteronormative perspective. And tumescence is one of our society’s most rigid (pun intended) artistic taboos.'

'I would argue that if one discards the heteronormative perspective in approaching male sexuality and sensuality; there is a wide universe of brilliant artistic expression of the male nude waiting to give us the range of masterpieces and soaring inspiration and sensual beauty primarily associated with female nudes. From a homonormative artistic perspective, the penis, both flaccid and in various stages of tumescence can and should be an easy and normal part of the expression of who we are.'

'My newest model, Tyler, is an extraordinary gift, a smart, sweet, gentle man completely uninhibited when talking about and expressing his own sexuality. You could say he’s always horny; in fact, I think he says that about himself.'

'But whether it was his intention or not, Tyler helped me to accept that arousal and tumescence are a significant and substantial part of our artistic story as men. And as men, I believe, we cannot achieve full self-realization until we free ourselves from so-called heternormality and the perspective that confuses insecurity and psychosis with male sexuality. Rape is violence, not sex and the male penis in a healthy homonormative adult is pleasure, bonding and community.'

'I am well aware that I’m taking a very controversial and easily contradicted view here. One could shoot it full of holes, but one must also admit that handled in a certain way, tumescence can AND SHOULD play an honest role in queer art.'

'I’m not sure you feel about tumescence…'

Tumescence? Tumescence? As an adult gay male who has a blog dedicated to the male form, I should know that word...shouldn't I? Well, I didn't. When photographer Richard Rothstein recently asked me my feelings on the subject, he had me a googling. Now first off, Richard wasn't just striking up a casual Sunday afternoon discussion. Richard had just sent on a series of images from his recent shoot with Tyler in NYC's East Village.

Richard has sent me tons of images from many shoots over the years, and in Richard's case, I equally look forward to the words that accompany them. Richard's images are always incredible, but also visually brimming with light color and detail, much like the city in which serves as Richard's studio. The same degree of detail is often weaved within his words. Richard's brings more to his city safari's than just skill and a camera. Much like Richard's tumescence lesson for me, he's also open to challenges, and new ways to look at the profession and passion he has devoted so much of his life to.

The images included here are a few teasers and behind the scenes shots of Richard's work with Tyler. Richard's words about the shoot told a complete story, a personal story I didn't want to muddle. It's theme, is one I have thought and fought, a few times myself, when viewing and choosing images for pieces for the site. It had me thinking, and googling more than just the definition of 'tumescence.

It's a bad obsession
It's always messin'
It's always messin' my mind

On about 363 days of the year... if you were to ask me what I thought of Saul Hudson, I wouldn't really have a lot to say. I mean I like many of Guns N's Roses songs, but Saul (Slash) and the group were never at the top of any of my lists. but... if on the other two days of the year... well, lets just say my answer would be different.

Below: A young Slash, rocking and looking great with short hair.

So... it's one of those two days and when the image of Saul above, popped up on a tumblr site I was doing research on. The dirty/sexy push and pull for a 80's hard rocking guitarist had me Saulivating. Behind his head of curls, Saul has a striking face, and I am not sure how he has managed to keep that incredible stomach of his.

If you check out the last image below, Saul also has a surprisingly tight ass.  Possibly kept so tight by being bound for so many years in all that tight black leather.,,

Rocking the pube revealing cleavage.

'If a band mate cums on your leg, it isn’t really gay — as long as you’re boffing the same girl. Even if you are wearing black nail polish.'

Christopher Jones: Double Feature

$

I had never heard of actor Christopher Jones until last week. Alberto, a poster on DC, shared images of Christopher modeling nude in the 1968 movie, Three in the Attic. I liked the CFNM element to the scene and after reading a bit about the movie, wanted to find a copy of the movie. It is not really that strange that I had not heard of Christopher, with the exception of one small role in 1996, Jones' carrier really only spanned about 5 years between 1965 and 1970.

His roles may have been minimal, but his screen presence certainly was not. In the few moments I have watched so far, Jones has a strong and intensely sexual presence on screen, something not lost on those promoting his films. I have not seen The Looking Glass War yet, (it is quite expensive on Amazon) but as you can see from the poster below, Jones in tight, unbuttoned jeans were certainly seen as a selling feature.

The Looking Glass War (1970)

I look forward to finding a copy of the film, which also featured Anthony Hopkins. One of the scenes that comes up most when I searched was what looks like an interrogation scene with Hopkins and another actor trying to get info out of the jeans wearing, but shirtless Jones.

Sometimes when you research an actor, you don't find much except info on their movies, but Jones, who died in 2014, had a life far more dramatic than most of the roles he played don television and on screen. After his father was sent to a state hospital for putting a gun to his head, Jones and his brother were taken into care and place in Boys Town in Memphis. As a young boy, Jones became a fan of James Dean after constantly being told how much they looked alike.

Growing up in State care, Jones didn't have a lot of future options and ended up joining the army as a teenager. It didn't last long however, and he ended up going AWOL which led to a one year sentence in military prison. After his release, Jones headed to New York to start an acting career. Jones got his big break starring along side Shelley Winters in a 1961 Broadway production of Tennessee William's The Night of the Iguana. Jones went on to co-star with Winter's in Wild In The Streets. (1968)

Winters introduced Jones to actress Susan Strasberg, daughter of Lee Strasberg. Jones later went on to join Strasberg's famous Actors Studio, and married Susan Strasberg in 1965. Soon after he headed to Hollywood and landed the lead in the series 'The Legend of Jesse James' and upon the shows cancellation, began his work in film. According to wiki, the oddest part of Jones' career occurred after being cast by David Lean in the film 'Ryan's Daughter.'

'The two men (Jones and Lean) had a difficult relationship, as did many actors who worked with David Lean. This intensified when production of the film took 12 months instead of the expected six because David Lean would wait for the right composition of clouds or the perfect storm to brew. Unknown to Christopher, he was drugged during his filming of Ryan's Daughter by Sarah Miles, according to her first autobiography A Right Royal Bastard, which caused Christopher to believe he was having a breakdown. Jones also was involved in a car crash, not knowing he had been drugged. The director and producers never informed him of the drugging. Later, Lean would dub his voice, causing a bad reputation for Jones.'

All of the trauma took a toll on Jones, and his career. He abandoned his acting career and focused his energies into painting, art deco and sculpting in clay. Quentin Tarantino tried to lure him out of retirement for a role in Pulp Fiction, but Jones declined. He did step back in front of the camera briefly in 1996 in a role in Trigger Happy for his friend, director Larry Bishop. Very sad his career ended so early, I can only imagine what movies would have lay head for Jones in the 70's and 80's.

Three In The Attic (1968)

'In the swinging sixties three girls discover they have the same boyfriend who has been playing around with them all while vowing fidelity to each. To teach him a lesson he won't forget, the trio contrive to lock him up and continually favour him with their attentions in turn.'

Missing Chapters: Gareth by Pierre-Yves Monnerville

'The texts are an attempt to go beyond pleasing the eye and share or confront experiences or point of view on sexuality, homosexuality, relationships, self confidence, growing older, loneliness...'

The quote above comes from the description to Pierre-Yves Monnerville's 2009 book Diaries. Pierre's quote resonated with me as in many ways, it sums up the motivation behind FH. At heart I am a writer, and telling the stories behind the images I feature is what stimulates my interest in the men in front of, and behind the camera.

There is nothing wrong of course with enjoying an image solely based on the visual. Art is about the artist telling a story through their work. For me however, an images is like the front cover of a book. Sometimes the cover is enough, I glace, enjoy the visual and then move on. Other times however, with the images I feature on FH, the cover has me curious to investigate and find out more about the stories behind the cover's creation.

With the subject being art, and the male form, the stories frequently stem from creative concepts, often accompanied by interesting, funny, and frequently arousing and even erotically stimulating tales of the process. As humans, we all have stories, most however do, and should, remain untold. Many of the photographers and models I have interviewed have included stories 'off the record' tales that they would rather not have made public. As a writer, it can be frustrating at times telling an 'incomplete' story, one with chapters that have to be left out of the manuscript and final final published piece.

As soon as I saw Pierre's images of Gareth (mr nice), I sensed there was a story to tell. There seemed a bit of a disconnect between his big beautiful muscled body, and the emotions flowing from his wide blue eyes. Sadly, I can only share the images, and part of the story as Pierre shared that Gareth died a few years back.

This shoot was from 2008. Gareth was a straight bodybuilder, but dabbled in nude shoots and solo videos to help support and finance his training. Pierre describes Gareth as being being very quiet and reserved during their shoots. Professional and business like, Gareth was willing to try anything that might work, yet at the same time rarely showed interest in the final outcome. Gareth did however seem genuinely happy with working with Pierre and the completed photos, but again, from a business perspective.

The connection between body building and nude modeling is a natural one. You spend so many hours working out and in the gym to achieve results. The end goal, to show off your body to both judges and the public at a competition. Pierre always had the feeling that Gareth wasn't totally comfortable with the homo-erotic aspect of some of the work and videos he was doing. Gareth considered it part of what he needed to do in order to continue bodybuilding professionally.

I would love to have been able to follow Gareth's story beyond this mid-point in his life and career. Many people in their thirties, struggle with their career, and spend countless hours trying to figure out how they want to spend the rest of their lives. My guess, or maybe more, my hope is, that like most of us, within a few years things would have settled and Gareth would be on the path he desired. Although Gareth sadly had many missing chapters, for this piece, Pierre's words about one of their final shoots, seems an appropriate last chapter for this piece.

'I shot these images of Gareth as part of my Men in the Dark series. The series was motivated by my annoyance at how most people reacted to the photos I showed. Most people seemed only interested in whether they found the models attractive, how muscly the guy was or the size of his cock… I tried to make those men generic so to speak.'

A Victorian Life: Nas by Lights On Studio

'I want to lead the Victorian life, surrounded by exquisite clutter.'
Freddie Mercury

I was first introduced to Tom Nakielski's (Lights On Studio) work with the stunning Nas last fall. Tom had sent on a few shots of Nas to be included in the double feature I posted showcasing some of Tom's favorite shots. (Ray of Light) I loved Nas' look and the beautiful way that Tom captured him in their four shoots together.

Tom's images have an elegance and luxurious texture, and many of his shoots are also themed with a strong a nod to the past. History is weaved within his themes and the props and costumes his models wear. Nas too has an elegance which exudes from his poses and beautiful brown eyes. It made perfect sense then to shoot Nas with a Victoria home belonging to a one of Tom's friends. It was originally owned by the town banker. The current owner is in the process of restoring it.

Victorian Homes are homes built during the Victorian era, referring to the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837–1901. The home in which Nas was shot was built in 1892. Victoria homes are distinguished by their architecture often including sharp and high angles, decorated roof line and slates, patterned brick and lavish porches, often going around two or three sides of the house. They also often contain stained glass windows, and many were built with fireplaces in each sitting area and bedroom.

'Nas was the perfect subject for this location shoot since there was a lot of Asian art in the house. He is a natural in front of the camera and his body flows without effort. Even his fingers are fluid and graceful. I was sure he was a dancer but to my surprise he says he can't dance. I think it would be a thing of beauty to see him moving across the stage.'

I especially love how how Tom used the light from the tall wooden windows. Victorian homes often have colored wallpaper and dark wood, and light streaming in adds to the elegance, especially when streaming over Nas' beautiful body and skin. Sadly, this may be one of the last shoots for the Malaysian model who will graduate from University this spring. Tom shares he has already been offered a job on the west coast and will be leaving to begin his job at the end of the semester. Hopefully I can dip back into Tom's archives and share more of his work with Nas in the future!

Blast From the Past: Laurence Lau

I was a little young to remember actor Laurence Lau on All My Children, but his character Greg's romance with Jenny was one of the most popular super couples during the early 80's. I do however remember coming home from school in the late 80's, making a peanut butter sandwich, and watching Another World with my mother. Laurence was playing Jamie Frame at the time and dealing with Vicky Hudson in the form of rising star Anne Heche.

Lau was replaced by Russell Todd in 1990, but I remember thinking how cute he was at the time. I don't remember Lau showing much skin on AW, but when I recently came upon an old speedo' shot of Laurence, thought it time to he made a FH appearance. Although rare today, soap stars from the 80's were often shot in a speedo for a shoot. Soaps here huge in the 80's and there were dozens of magazines promoting the shows and their stars.

All My Children

Laurence with Kim Delaney and Darnell William

Most of these magazines, like the soaps they covered, have long ended, but thanks to the net, their content is still available. I wish there was a central site that published images of celebrities from the 80's and 90's, but I did manage to find a few of my old 'haunts' that had a few more shirtless and speedo shots of Laurence.
