Man Of The Month: December 1982

'Outgoing, charismatic, intelligent, is able to cope with stressful situations. Also ambitious, always looking to overachieve'

At the request of a reader of the blog, I bring you Ronnie O, Playgirls Man of the month for December 1982. Mr. Ortiz, his red flannel pants, and his moustache!

Since, Ronnie is the son of a one time world champion bantamweight boxer, it is not surprising to discover that Sylvester Stallone is one actor he idolizes. And, he hasn't had to admire him afar: Ronnie did some stunt work as a boxer in Rocky III.

Nothing More Than Feelings... DirtRoad by BrilliantVita

'I model because I enjoy it. I’d rather go for a walk barefoot in the forest than see the sights in the city. My own skin fits better than the latest fashions. When it comes to modeling, I would rather make people feel something than want to buy something. Keep it natural, keep it real. Steer away from the consumerism and appreciate what’s really there.'

I have used parts of the above quote in my previous posts on the work of model and photographer Warren Russell (DirtRoad). Whenever I spend time with his work, different parts of the quote and specific words ring in my head. Today, the words, make people feel continue to tickertape across as I write. I try to write something, hopefully meaningful for every artist that I feature and every set of images I share. The reason is sort of captured in those three words.

The Internet is overrun with sites, blogs and especially tumblr's that discourage words (and thought) and instead, encourage viewers to use the images, and the people within them, for a quick, one time source of stimulation. The viewer is not expected to feel much more beyond that, in fact it is usually actively discouraged. Instead, the sites want you to move on, use the images then click on to page two, never giving what was on page one another thought.

There is nothing really wrong with this, on occasion.... We have all benefited from time to time. But, without a name for each face, and for each body; without credit for the artist behind it; without a word of explanation as to why an image was created or the reason it exists, our emotional detachment from the things we see and the bodies on our screens continues to widen. I like to think that the words I surround images with helps to lessen this, even just a little, in the same way Warren's words have increased my enjoyment, and feelings, about the images he creates.

In my first two features on his work, the focus was on Warren's self portraits, To The Woodshed!& Internal Intimacy. This time, the images are from another artist, Seattle Washington's BrilliantVita. Warren first shot with Eric from BrilliantVita a couple of years ago having connected through a Craigslist ad. There was a photography contest that Eric was working on a submission for and Warren's says Eric had a vision in mind of want he wanted to create and capture. About a year later they worked together again with what Warren describes as excellent results.

'Eric is a skilled photographer and he is professional and respectful. He makes you feel comfortable and usually puts on some good music while he works.'

'I might be the one walkin' away, but you're the one that's leavin'...again.'
Daryl Dixon

One of the attractions of the New Year's Walking Dead marathon was spending some time enjoying Daryl Dixon and his portrayer, the incredible Norman Reedus. What makes Reedus such a great actor is initially he shows little to find attractive about the character, nor initially the actor for that matter. But... as the story unfolds, Reedus lets us in, little by little to who Daryl is with his wit, charm and undeniable sex appeal. If you're going to fall for an off kilter, gun toting hot head, best to choose Daryl because as we quickly learn, he got all the charm in the family.

Reedus is also interesting to get to know, quite private about many things, but not his love of animals, his fans and photography. Very photogenic himself, Reedus has modeled for Prada, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Durban, Levi's and Lexus and for an actor, and has incredibly creative portfolio.

Resolutions Reaped: Robbie Franco by Jan Griffioen

This is the time of year many of us are thinking about what we hope to accomplish over the next 12 months. What we want to look back on next Christmas with a sense of pride and achievement. When I first profiled model Robbie Franco last year, he stated his goal for 2013 was to shoot with amazing photographers. Robbie's resolution for the year certainly was achieved in spades!

Since I last featured Robbie (No Limits) his portfolio has expanded, bursting with incredibly sexy shots from not only amazing photographers, but many whose work I have enjoyed sharing over the years. Leigh Carter from boy:gender, Andrew Bowman, HaringmanPLUS, Gabi and Mount Photography are just sample of some of the artists having shot Robbie over the past twelve months.

Another artists Robbie shot with was Jan Griffioen whose studio is located in the city of Zutphen in the Netherlands. I love how Jan blends darkness light and skin skin and how his images of Robbie so beautifully feature illustrate Robbie's body lines and curves.

'Well, working with Jan, was great, he has a big studio in Zutphen. I arrived there in the morning, we chat about our experiences and how the shoot going be with a nice hot cup of tea. Very relaxed. After that we started to shoot, for about 2 or 3 hours. Hope one day to do a second shoot with him!

Robbie loved his experience with Jan and would love to step in front of his camera again, maybe this time with another model. Robbie had never done a duo shoot before and for 2014, that is one of the top wishes on his resolution list. I will keep you informed of this progress!

Kudos to Jennifer Garner

I had sort of mixed emotions while watching Dallas Buyer's Club. While I really liked, and appreciated the film, I was not really sure there was much new or original added to the story. What made the film so compelling was not the story as much as the characters. Each actor so very beautifully committed to, and inhabited each of the main roles. Matthew McConaughey was incredible and Jared Leto put in a beautiful performance. Unfortunately, to me, all of the hype and critical praise, especially for Leto, sucked a bit of magic out of the performances. Not the actors fault of course, but so much has been said and written that I went in with expectations that could never truly be met. I had almost no expectations watching McConaughey in Mud and The Paper Boy and found him far more compelling in both of these films.

My experience has always been that most viewers connect with certain characters early in a film or television show and view the story through their eyes. With Dallas Buyer's Club this character was Dr. Eve Saks so wonderfully played by Jennifer Garner. It was through her eyes I connected with McConaughey's Ron and Leto's Rayon. I have always enjoyed Garner but have never really given her much respect with regards to her acting. Even when figuratively and literally kicking ass in each episode of Alias, Garner was so effective it was easy to overlook her talent. It was through her beautiful eyes that I truly felt the power of Dallas Buyer's Club. Although I wish McConaughey and Leto much luck at this Sunday's Golden Globes, it was the sadly not nominated Garner who made the film for me.

Bounding With Energy: Rock Carter by MQO Photo Studio

'Rock was bounding with energy. He was like a finely tuned race car that simply needed a track.'

It is always difficult to describe precisely why I am drawn to a model or an image. When I first saw photos of 21 year old model Rock Carter I was instantly hit with the positive energy coming from each of his images. Rock has an magnificent body, but it was also his face, his poses and the twinkle in his eye that made the images both sexy, as well as incredibly fun.

Some of my favorite images of Rock come from Pearland Texas photographer Gary A. from MQO Photo Studio. When I contacted Gary about featuring his work, his first comment about working with Rock was that it was magical. Magical perfectly describes the results of the interaction between Rock with Gary's camera. Within Rock you can feel a bit of Donald O'Conner mixed with a dash of Disney.

Gary was in Oregon visiting family when he and Rock planned to shoot so he was in need of a studio space to rent. The building he rented was gorgeous and had all kinds of interesting backdrops and textures to work with. The only drawback was that it was a very cold Oregon day and the heaters in the building were not working. In the end, they did find some space heaters to use but Gary says it was a testament to Rock that he gave some of his best shots while he was still getting warm. Rock says that even though he was freezing, and it was his first nude shoot, it was his favorite, and his most enjoyable experience in front of the camera thus far.

'Gary's an easy going guy, and great fun to work with. He's mostly photographed products for companies and has wanted to get into model photography. With Gary's photography skills the images turned out amazing and the experience was awesome! I look forward to working with him again!'

Gary calls Rock absolute pro and said he has never worked with a model who was who was so supremely confident in his body and his manner. Both photographer and model had ideas and a vision of the shots they wanted, and Gary feels that together they accomplished both of their goals. It was Rock's idea to use his fedora, and what a fantastic addition to some of the images it was. The simple prop added a great dimension to some of the images and one of Gary's favorite photos from the shoot came from that sequence of images with the fedora.

'I tend to want to use natural lighting when photographing people. However, for this shoot I used various lights and I'm so glad I did. Using lights and mostly solid backgrounds allowed me to make the focus Rock and his perfectly defined body. I know people always think they can develop their bodies more or be more defined here or there. I get that but Rock's body was perfect for a nude shoot because he is so well defined. I think muscles that are too developed detract from all the other things that may be going on in a photograph.'

'It goes without saying that Rock is a handsome man. And, of course, it's all about the eyes when doing this type of photography and he's blessed with soul revealing eyes. I just knew I had to find a way to bring those qualities to life. Rock's torso, and legs, for that matter, are exactly right for the type of photos I was hoping to get. I so loved Rock's ability to play and be spontaneous. At several different points he was, literally, dancing. Talk about filling a room with energy. At the same time, he was also able to dial things down to get some more intimate shots. Rock also had a kindness and warmth about him that was profoundly endearing. I felt we did a solid job at capturing that.'

Athletic, toned, and agile, Rock helps maintain his physique through climbing and parkour. The Oregon model describes modeling as a passion and feels fitness compliments it well. His workouts aren't meant to necessarily make his body bigger or more muscular, but instead are designed help lift and move his body quickly and efficiently for extended periods of time.

When shooting the human form, Gary's priority is creating an atmosphere that is comfortable for his models. It is essential to remove any roadblocks so models feel relaxed and at ease. Then, the creation of images can begin with the creating of photographs that Gary hopes people will come back to again and again. Gary understands this doesn't happen often, but when art is interesting, the work has a shot at living forever, beyond a quick glance or look. Gary’s work with Rock had me more than just glancing, but stopping, paying attention and wanting to see, and maybe more importantly, wanting to find out more.

My Holiday Affair

Growing up in the 80's, I wasn't really that familiar with the work of actor Robert Mitchum. To me, he was the old dude in mini series like North & South and The Winds Of War. I remember hearing he was in the original Cape Fear, but don't really remember his cameo in the remake. He would never have been an actor, either because of looks, or his age, who I would have considered sexy.

Over this Holiday season however, I spent a couple of hours with Mr. Mitchum in the Christmas movie Holiday Affair. I had not seen, nor heard of the flick before but am happy I decided to give it a shot when it aired on TMC. Although a Christmas movie, the poster is correct in that the movie is hot! Mitchum exudes a powerful sexual energy, especially in his scenes with Janet Leigh.

I am surprised I had not heard of the 1949 movie before, especially given how hot Mitchum is in the role. It is not so much his looks, but his the characters has such confidence in everything he does, you just know for the get go he is going to end up with the woman he wants. I would highly recommend checking out this movie when it airs next Christmas, it was more than a pleasant holiday affair for me.

Tearing Off The Tux

Most years, after the awards have been handed out I have written a review of the Globes. Today, between live tweeting and facebook, most of the reviews happen as the show airs, without the bother of having to look back and putting a little perspective on what was said. There is really not much to say, Amy and Tina rocked and should host everything always, Jacqueline Bisset came off as odd yes, but her career has lasted longer than most of the actors in the room and deserves respect for that alone. The jokes about her were old even before she left the stage. Some of the winners were head scratchers, but for the most part they were on point.

In the end, this is FH so my review is not so much on what was seen, but instead, the unseen. Most of the men gracing the stage have graced the pages of the blog over the years, and here is small sample of GG nominee's and presenters who look good in, and out of there tuxedo's.

Orlando Bloom

Channing Tatum

Chiwetel Ejiofor

Leonardo DiCaprio, getting better with age!

Chris Evans

Thor, the other Chris

And another Chris, this time Pine

I think people either thought he was dirty looking and odd or eccentrically hot. For me, Alex Ebert was hot!

Tina Fey's son Randy had a certain something something...

Hat-trick: Best of the Rest by studioAtruong

All good things must come to an end, but hopefully this is not the last time I feature the work of Alain from studioAtruong. This, the third post in the series, does conclude my favorite images of Alain's work with the incredible Joey. In December I featured the first two installments (Figure & Form and Overalls). In this third and final post, I chose some of my favorite images and sets from the remainder of Alain's work with Joey.

Joey is really outstanding no matter where Alain pointed his camera and excels at posting and full body shots. Some of my favorites in this series however are the outstanding portrait shots Alain captured highlighting Joey's face and eyes. Hope you all in enjoyed the Joey Hat-trick as much as I enjoyed putting them all together.
