Casern: Nico by Jenswac

Over the years I have often been fascinated by the artists and images that combine beauty with destruction. Some of my favorite shoots and features have focused on young men, at their peek physically and sexually, surrounded by, and within buildings and locations long abandoned and forgotten. The contrast between the human form, breathing and alive with a dead location is both visually compelling and often strangely erotic.

I am not sure there is a more fitting example of a dead location than an old soviet casern in Leipzig, Germany. This is where photographer Jenswac shot 31 year old German model Nico. The first few images are actually from the second part of the shoot which was in a field outside of the city. Nico says the focus of these images show more or less a country boy having fun in the grassland. Most of the pictures try to show some movement, which means they had to do one situation several times. The life and movement in the field contrast the more somber, still feeling of the first part of the shoot within the Casern.

One of the things that runs through my mind when I when I feature certain locations is the stories and history of that location. I remember last year when I was profiling model Tyler in an old mill was thinking, and hearing the voices of all the miners who worked there in the past. With a military barracks, you can just imagine the history, the fear, life and death that once inhabited the location.

'I'm absolutely into art, like performance art, fine and visual arts, photography, literature and music. And I try to combine these arts and it's also a kind of testing borders, entering new spaces. That is also meant literally as I love to work in certain spaces and locations like old buildings, abandoned factories and so on. I like the contrasts there one can work with or one can stage. And also the light and colors.'

Nico describes the area they shot in as huge with different buildings, most of them actually overgrown. It was a sunny summer day so they were fortunate to have had great natural light. The goal was to use different places and locations to connect the damage and destruction with masculinity and strength. Nico says working with Jenswac was easy and he always gave him the feeling he was giving the photographer what he was looking for. 'He gave me good hints how to move and pose. He had great ideas how to use the surroundings and he was never disappointed if an idea failed.'

Double, double toil and trouble

Ryan Murphy knows better than almost anyone how to put together a spectacular season 1. Glee, Nip/Tuck, Popular and AMS all had first seasons that had audiences coming back for more. Season 2 of American Horror Story was to me, even better than 1. But... I am struggling with the Coven that is the focus of season 3.

It is still watchable, the powerhouse acting still holds my attention, but Coven is a bit of a mess. Last week's Stevie Nicks themed episode highlighted the seasons lack of direction. It was clear from the awkward editing, especially of Jessica Lange's scenes, the idea to bring in Nicks was an after thought and quickly put together and edited into the story. It is funny though, as uneventful as the episode was, the scenes featuring Nicks music were the highlight.

Coven doesn't have the balance the previous two seasons had. Although undoubtedly the best part of AHS, this season is far too focused on Lange. She is in pretty much every scene and it is becoming rather tedious. In season 1 her character was balanced out well by Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters. In season 2, Peters and Sarah Paulsen shared the storyline load. In Coven, Paulsen, and especially Peters are stuck in smaller, uninteresting roles with little to do. Although watching Lange spar with Kathy Bates, Francis Conroy and Angela Bassett has been a blast, they don't make up for the lack of a cohesive story or direction. In addition, Emma Roberts and Farmiga are irritating and not up to the level of their co-stars.

The worst part of Coven however is it's shocking lack of ability to create any real horror. The opening credits aside, almost every major character that as died (Patti Lupone has been offed twice) has come back to life. How can we be terrorized by murders and stake burnings when characters either rise from the dead the next episode or in some cases, can't be killed at all. I hope the show's last set of episodes are better than the last few. I haven't given up, just hope that the producers see Lange is at her best when not in almost every scene, and she alone, without a well thought out story and concept, and Peters and Paulsen, are not enough to keep AHS on everyone's must watch list.

Most of you by now have seen the image of Alexander Skarsgard in the South Pole on the can. Not many people can make sitting on the toilet sexy, but Skarsgard pushes hard to make it work. Personally, I enjoyed the parody shots just as much and some, like the two below can be found HERE:

Seasonal Changes: Vaughn by t a mueller

The image of Vaughn above is from my post last year (Ushanka) from Vaughn's work with Ohio photographer t. a. Mueller. I had been enjoying Troy's work for some time and was really happy to be able to feature his work, especially his collaborations with Vaughn Halo. Vaughn has such a great look, highlighted by such a positive vibe that comes through in his work.

In Usanka, Troy shot Vaughn on a freezing February day, naked, some shots in water wearing pretty much the hat and a scarf. When Vaughn saw the post, he asked me why I didn't use the image above, one of his favorites. The image was one of my favorites as well, but I kept that image hoping for a follow-up which I am happy to be able to feature today. Given the winter theme of the first feature, and the January posting date, I focused my text on winter and my love of winter and living in a location that experiences all four of the seasons. When most people talk about the seasons, it is often focused on temperature, the heat and sun in the summer and the cold and snow of the winter.

For me, the love of seasonal changes is all about the visual. The white and greys in the winter, the red, purple, pinks and yellow's of spring. The bright blue and green in summer and the rich oranges, reds and browns of fall. These visual changes are what I live for and sustain me when other parts of living are not quite so beautiful or stimulating.

I could not help but also think of change when I spent time with the new images Troy sent on for this post. Troy and Vaughn have shot several times the past year and it is clear that Vaughn's look has gone through subtle changes beautifully captured by Troy's camera. One of the reasons I loved the original winter shoot of Vaughn was how his youthful energy and enthusiasm brought so much life to the cloudy and more gloomy feel of that February winter's day.

Obvious changes such as hair length and facial hair to more subtle changes such as body and muscle tone, fine lines and even slight changes in facial structure. The most striking change to me is though is the maturity and growth of soul which can be seen within Vaughn's eyes. These small, but beautifully meaningful changes in a way mirror the seasonal changes of life. As spring moves into summer most living organisms transition into full bloom and the changes in Vaughan over the last two years add a visual depth to his work in front of the camera.

Perception Correction

I was a kid when I headed to the movies with my parents to watch The Goonies. I loved it and had a mini crush on actor Josh Brolin, especially working out in his grey sweats and tank top. I also like him in the short lived series The Young Riders which aired in the early 90's.

Josh with Ty Miller in The Young Riders

The bloom quickly went off the rose as Brolin got older. For close to the next twenty years, Brolin did very little on screen that really drew me to the theatre. In addition, I began to hear tidbits about his personal life, nothing huge really, but enough to cement my short lived crush was done. Brolin also became a little hardened looking, maybe just natural aging, or maybe helped along by his lifestyle.

Josh with McKenzie Astin in Goonies

Jump to about a month ago. I am home sick in bed with the flu, snow raging outside. Cold water and Hot tea on the table by my bed. A slew of magazines, newspapers and books lay on the comforter. One of the books, Joyce Maynard's Labor Day was just dropped off by a co-worker who brought over most of the reading material currently surrounding me. It was interesting as I had seen the preview for the movie version of Maynard's book just the week before when I was at the movies. Although not a Brolin fan, I do love Kate Winslet and the few brief scenes, along with music playing caused me to want to see it.

I am not sure if seeing that preview helped or hurt by reading experience but I loved the book and devoured it in one day. Maynard's writing doesn't so much invite you into the world she is writing about as much as assure in the first few pages, that the experience will be worth it. I very quickly fell madly in love with Frank, the character played by Brolin, and the man who Kate Winslet's Adele brings home from the store. I tried, but could not help but picture Brolin while reading. His hardened face, all of a sudden made sense given the history of the character and the pain Frank had experienced. I could not help but now love the man who played the characters and by the time I put the book down, Brolin, at least his physically, had become Frank in my mind.

I look forward to seeing Labor Day when it opens and hope my love for Frank continues as I see see what my mind has already beautifully visualized. I have loved fictional characters before, I think all readers have. I have not however, had one change my perception of an actor, especially prior to seeing a film adaptation of the book in question. I will let you know? Also curious if anyone has a similar change of heart about an actor based on a character or book?

Local News:

Pretty much every local news station has been covering, and hyping the Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning rivalry taking place for the AFC title this Sunday when the New England Patriots take on Manning's Denver Broncos. I go back and forth on Brady, but he looks damned good in his hat, and his blue practice pants, while taking to the field for practice at Gillette Stadium this week.

Grin and Bare it: Will by Diver Photography

'Will was very laid back and was not ashamed to show off in front of the camera. From his stunning smile to his great physique, Will is an all around great model and guy.'

As hot as Will's body is, his strong arms and great legs, his hard chest and stomach, that beautiful behind and enticing front it is really that incredible smile that lights up every image. There are countless great bodies on FH but not as many of whom that look so naturally happy to be grinning and baring it all. Will's smile is amazing especially in the images in which that's all he is wearing.

These fun and sexy images come courtesy of Little Rock photographer Mark from Diver Photography. I first shared Mark's work last Autumn when I featured his work with model Joe Reece. (The Natural State)

In addition to lighting up each of these images, it was Will's smile that actually first connected me with Mark's work. It was that smile that first drew me to one of Mark's images and had me contacting about a piece on the blog.

Although there were a several images of Will on Mark's MM Page, I didn't know at the time that there were any nudes. I was initially going to focus the piece on portrait and physique shots. That was... until Mark sent on some additional images which I am happy to be able to share exclusively for FH readers.

'Will was a great model to work with! He has never modeled before but I could tell he was ready to go. We did 4 shoots over the course of 6 months and Will was amazing to work with every time. Will was never bashful in front of the camera, and was always willing to show off his body. Will works hard on staying in shape and goes to the gym almost every day to keep his physique top notch.'

To check out more of Diver Photography's newer work, including tons of never before seen images keep an eye out for an upcoming book. In the meantime, check out his Model Mayhem Page for more hot images and news on the book's release. The book will include never seen before nudes and other shots of the models you see featured there.

Romance By Chance

I have never watched The Bachelor. I have as most of you know watched my fair share of other reality shows usually competition based shows like American Idol, Survivor and The Amazing Race. I also have counted on Big Brother as a guilty summer pleasure. This year, The January, former Venezuelan professional football player Juan Pablo Galavis almost had me give it a shot, but again... I stayed away. Juan Pablo is just simply hot, and the brief shots of him shirtless on the ads almost had me moving my reality television romance boundary.

Most reality shows are about relationships, usually the relationship between the contestant and the audience. It is why producers tell us so many back stories, especially on the singing competition shows. They want us to connect with someone on the show, someone we will be loyal to and pull for week after week. Many of the shows I listed end up with romances between players, Big Brother in particular loves to exploit what they call showmances. These romantic, or sexual connections are not though at the core of the show.

We spend our lives trying to connect with others and I cannot help but find shows that exploit this primal need we all have to love, and especially to be loved, difficult to watch. Although most of the Bachelor's interactions are scripted and staged, they are still based on our basic need to mate. Putting 20 or 30 women (or in the case of The Bachelorette, men) against one another for the affection of someone paid to be the center of attention makes no sense to me. Almost though Juan Pablo, almost...

Urban Ballet
By Richard Rothstein

'New York City is the world’s most exciting stage; the perfect place to tell a story, score a musical or in this case, choreograph a dance. Staging urban ballet, capturing the movement of urban men set against the energy, texture. color and raw beauty of New York City is a natural extension of my work as a photographer.'

'The city inspires and allows a range of themes for urban ballet exposing the viewer to humor, irony, sexuality, drama and whimsy. And, frankly, this is a city of constant movement, high energy and pervasive sexuality. What better way to express that than through the movement and energy of beautiful men.'

Shorts: Brett Gleason by Walt Cessna

'I take pictures because I simply can't help myself from documenting everything I see. I am visually obsessed and dream in photos. I wouldn't have it any other way.'

I was first introduced to Brett Gleason, the man and his music, when profiling his work with photographer Nicholas Smith back in 2010. Since then, I have followed his career, his songs, his work. The last few weeks have been non stop for Brett beginning with a live New Years Even concert on Youtube (which I never could get connected to) and a live Stream-A-Thon which just ended today. The purpose of the stream was to promote and fund raise for the completion of Brett's full time album.

Although his primary focus is music, his new music video and single, Imposter is coming next month, it was his work in front of the camera that I got to know first, and continues to hold my attention. Brett brings a depth and intensity to his work as a model and weaves in the same level of soul he instills his music and writing with. Brett has a sexy everyman quality, relatable yet complex. A great head of hair and one of the best chests only add to the package. Brett has been featured on FH in images shot by a number of photographers. Nicholas Smith, whose work with Brett you can see HERE: and Thomas Evans who showed us much, much more of Brett in features HERE:& HERE:

I have also featured Brett's work with photographer Walt Cessna whose work I used to help promote Brett's first solo effort, The Dissonance. Walt has been documenting faces, bodies and souls since he was a teenager and says that for a brief moment in the 90's he was 'THE up & coming young buck', shooting for The Village Voice, Interview, Seventeen and many others. Walt left photography for a short time, but in 2000 was introduced to the digital world. Although his first digital camera was a clunky early primitive version, Walt says that he is now happily again ensconced in the world of image obsession and visual distraction.

Walt's new images of Brett certainly proved a visual distraction for me. Brett's shorts, the primary wardrobe, but really all that is needed. The concept may appear simple, but I love the resulting images are some of my favorite shots of Brett.
