Behind The 100:

I have gotten a bit behind lately. My work and personal life have taken a few unexpected turns which have reduced my free time dramatically since January. A little less time to relax, a little less blogging and a lot less time to watch television. My DVR is full of the past few months worth of episodes of The Walking Dead, Scandal, Bates Motel and about eight episodes of Glee. I have only been 'half-watching' Glee the past year and a half and have written several times on the blog about why. After reading an interview on TV|Line with creator Ryan Murphy the other day, I decided Monday night to try to start plugging my way through the episodes to free up some space on the DVR.

'I mean I know, but we have to finish our wine first.'
Holly Holiday

'We accelerated all those New York stories, and I think that was the right choice. I think that gave the show a burst of new energy'
Ryan Murphy

The first few episodes were so-so, confirming my theory that the show has lost it's magic. Then... I hit 100. The series 100th episode brought not just the old characters back, (Puck, Quinn, Mike & Brittany) it brought back their relationships and the magic. 100 made me wonder why the shows writers are continuing to spout how sending half the cast packing brought new life to the show. Maybe for the writers, but not the viewers. Blake and Jacob are hot and likable, but great tv is about more than good writing and storytelling, it also can be about history. None of the new cast of characters can muster the same depth of emotion scenes with Puck and Quinn, Brittany and Santana and the original New Directions can bring.

100 was a reminder of how great the first two seasons of Glee were, before the creators decided to fix something not broken. The New York storylines have held no interest for me. Mainly, because the show has turned Rachel into one of the shows most annoying characters. Secondly, the shows magic has always come from that original season one group, all together in one location. I hope the writers saw what I did in 100 and try to return to that magic in the shows last season. 100 also had me liking one trick pony Kristin Chenoweth again and even enjoying Gwyneth Paltrow. Writers who can accomplish that, can accomplish anything!

Absolument Fabuleux: James by abfab

The photographer behind Absolument Fabuleux has a mission. Through his images, as well as exclusive site interviews, abfab wants to explore different sides of the men he shoots and reveal another facet that may have not been explored before. Absolument Fabuleux has only been up for a few months, but already includes some revealing photoshoots with not only models, but comedians, actors and sportsmen.

I have been familiar with abfab's work for awhile now, introduced first to his location shoots, usually deep in the woods of London and France. When I came upon his latest work with James, I had to get in touch about doing a feature. The 6' model has a smoldering intense look and his fierce hazel eyes that almost have you thinking, and hoping, that he wants to crash through the camera lens and come to blows with whomever is watching from the other side.

James is abfab's newest addition to his site Absolument Fabuleux, and if you head on over and join through the Boutique you can see hundreds of additional images of James showing many more facets and sides of this heavenly hunk!

It was another holiday, Halloween, that first drew me to the work of JayBee from Frisky Frolic. While searing for sexy Ghosts, I came upon the artists Flickr Page and have been visiting on a regular basis every since.

2010

Visiting Frisky Frolic on any time will brighten your day, but I especially visiting around the holidays. JayBee celebrates the holidays as he does most things, playfully and of course naked. This years series, Silly Wabbits will have you wanting to join Elmer Fudd on the hunt for a widdle wabbit of your own.

Knots & Eyes: Stefan by Ben Octavius

‘I consider myself a slim, elegant and quietly confident guy’
Stefan

When I first featured model Stefan back in 2011, I was intrigued that he used the word elegant to describe his look. Many male models might shy away from that word, but elegance has become an essential ingredient within many of my favorite images and within the work of many of the photographers whose work I love. When shooting the male form, elegance is a way to describe a fluidity of movement, even when a model is in pose and perfectly still. A flow that can be felt, even when not actually seen.

I felt the same fluid grace when first coming upon the work of artist Ben Octavius. The London photographer is just 22, but his images display a beautiful artistry, sophisticated, refined and skilfully elegant. For Ben, photography is a labour of love and he feels fortunate that within his shoots he is able to collaborate with other creative people that share and inspire his vision from start to finish.

I love the contrast between Stefan, his body and skin and the unfinished wood behind him. I love how Ben reflects the light on both wood and skin, in some places, blending one within the other. There is also a beautiful symmetry between the wood grain and the color of Stefan's skin and with ihis body hair. I also love how his eyes and nipples seem almost to balance, and even mirror, the many knots within the wall behind him.

'Working with Stefan was great, he as a great self awareness and It felt very comfortable working together. Hopefully in the future we can work out another collaboration. I have yet to have a bad experience and photography is a wonderful tool for meeting with and interacting with people you otherwise would have never come across.'

Just Because: Memories from Martha's Vineyard

A friends brand new 52 inch (television) brought about another viewing of Jaws this weekend, a movie I could watch over and over. John Williams score magnify's both the terror and the sensational and operatic final act. When I returned home I pulled out my own DVD to re-watch the making-of featurette. A young Steven Spielberg looks quite adorable directing and the story of the films journey from book to summer blockbuster is one of the interesting to explore. Last Christmas my uncle received Matt Taylor's Memories from Martha's Vineyard, a comprehensive and story filled chronicle of the making of the movie. I leafed through the image packed book after he opened it, and borrowed it to read in March. The stories, told first hand from those involved during the films production was a page turner and a fascinating behind the scenes look at the locals, the mechanical shark and the bottom dwellers back in LA fuming at the films ever increasing costs. If your a fan of Jaws, I highly recommend the book.

Black & Blue: Terrylane by Karl Royce

'Karl's background as a painter plays an important role as not only is space devoid of boundaries with his images, but color as well. Most of Karl's models are surrounded by just one color, often, but not necessarily black. The surrounding starkness adds a beautiful freedom to his work as well as flow of mobility the models utilize within the space.'

The quote above comes from my first feature on the work of London photographer Karl Royce this past Valentine's Day.  (The Chair)  For this piece, Karl sent on many different shots of 37 year old model Terrylane from several different shoots. Karl says that Terry has defiantly become one of his favorite models to work with and has come to regard him as a bit of a muse. For some reason, even with the more edgier shots Karl sent on, my favorites remained his images of Terry in front of the Black and Blue background.

'Karl is a pleasure to model for. A true gentleman and he produces fantastic photos.'

The solid colors, especially black, beautifully highlight and contrast with Terry's skin and body art. With the intricate lines and detail of his tattoo's the solid brings the viewers gaze to Terry with the background color acting as almost a platform or stage for his body to look it's best. Terry left a desk job to train as an electrician but really loves his work as a life model. Karl says it was Terry's work as an artists model that led to their meeting. Terry has posed twice for Spencer Tunik and his images were also featured in the Sun newspaper. Terry is someone who loves being naked and totally comfortable within his own skin. His comfortability with his body, and being nude, is evident and brings an ease and relaxation to his work and images.

'Terry is friendly, confident and has a wicked sense of humour which translates to his cheeky smile and twinkle in those aqua eyes. He is quick witted and really fun to be around, If I am being honest, we spend a lot of the time just chatting rather than concentrating on the shoot!'
