Like Father, Like Son

'Every good Tree, maketh good fruits.'
William Langland

Most of us, when we're young, hope not to end up like our fathers.  I don't mean in life or career necessarily, more those annoying traits and the physical changes that come with a life well lived. When we reach a certain age however, this often seems to change.  When we move into our thirties and forties, those traits and changes we tried to avoid, can actually become ones we now strive for.

Myette Family

One of the themes I often explore on FH is change.   So many models and artists that I feature have gone through emotional, spiritual and physical changes, often inspired by, and captured by, their art. Although we're often taught not to compare, when it comes to art and visuals, comparison is and important part of the foundation.

Whether we intend to or not, every time we view an image, we're comparing.  Comparing the image to the work of another, comparing the model to others, comparing the model's body to other model's and maybe most importantly, to our own.  This is one of the reasons I like to feature models over time, models shot by a variety of artists, brothers, friends and fathers and sons.

Over the years, I featured several father and son nude photos shoots.  One of the most popular, was Playgirl's pictorial of the Myette Family. The series of shots features a son, father and grandfather.  When checking out the shots, you can't help but comparing each of the family members, visually noting the differences between each man.

I have a decent relationship with my father, but at the same time, don't think I'd really jump at doing a nude photo shoot with him.  My father actually hits the gym more than I do, and although he's bigger than I am, he's much more defined.  Like many children though, my father was the first man that I ever saw naked.  Brief glimpses as he'd run from the bathroom to the bedroom.  As a confused young kid, seeing your father naked is an odd experience.  I both admired his physique, and was repelled by it at the same time. As I grew up and body began to change, I often compared myself to my father.  I went back and forth on whether I wanted to achieve his masculine appearance.

One of my favorite sets of father and son images are the three below.  I don't know their names, but I do know the father and son duo decided to take nude shots of themselves over the course of several years.  I could only find three shots from the series, but even from these three shots, you can see the small differences and changes over time.  I'd love to see more if anyone has them, but I found myself entranced with looking at the subtle differences in each of the three shots.

Happy Fathers Day!

When I was thinking about movies with 'Father's Day' themes, you might think it odd that 1968's Flesh came to mind.  I was always fascinated with that early scene of a naked Joe (Joe Dallesandro) feeding his daughter on the living room floor.  When I first saw the film a few years ago, I loved how director Paul Morrissey's introduced us to Joe as a father and husband, before sending him out on the streets to make some cash.  Check out my visual look back at Flesh on PAGE 2 HERE:

Classic Playgirl: Peter's Story

Ernie Langeberg (1974)

FH readers know that I love looking back at many men who appeared in the pages of Playgirl. I put the word out years ago that I was interested in interviewing and featuring men who appeared in the magazine, and have featured several over the years.  Recently I heard from a man named Peter who modeled for the magazine in it's first decade.  Peter had certainly not intended to take it all off for a magazine spread, but a certain University Psychology class assignment ended up turning into an offer to be in the magazine.

Peter didn't initially write me with the intention of sharing his story, or his images on the site. He reached out after Googling and searching for other Playgirl  models from the 1970's that he'd met and connected with back in the day. His search led him to an old piece on FH. It was a Playgirl focused piece in which I was looking for Playgirl models to interview.  After a little bit of arm twisting, Peter eventually supported my sharing his story.

I thought it was a interesting entry way into nude modeling, unique in that it that it stemmed from a University class discussion on the male nude in popular culture. The images I am including are sadly not of Peter but of four other models from around the time Peter posed during the magazine's early years.  Peter's current job position is one in where it probably best that his nude modeling days remain, as much as the Internet will allow, in the distant past.  The words however, in the remainder of this post were written by Peter.

Peter's Story

Many years back when Playgirl was not very old it became the subject of one of my classes while working on my Masters or PHD.  The subject turned to why the magazine was having a hard time starting up and building an audience. Two reasons were sighted by the class.

Tom Issacson (1977)

Women were not used to viewing naked men back then and were often embarrassed to talk about men's genitalia. Interestingly enough, seeing men in speedos was very common in those days. The curiosity was there, but to actually go to a store where someone may see them was out of the question.  The females in the class admitted that when they did get a copy it was from an all night market in the middle of the night. Another said the reason woman want the lights out during sex is because “that thing is ugly” so why buy pictures of it...

Second reason, the times. Girls were brought up with the idea that sex was done by married people - not single girls. There should be no discussion of anything to do with sex except behind closed doors. Since the newly exposed penis had to do with sex, it couldn’t be good to read the magazine.

As Women’s Lib took hold and females were now allowed to have more of an opinion and voice it, sex was coming out of the closet and they became more comfortable with looking at and discussing naked men. Our class concluded that the problem they had getting it off the ground was not the subject matter as much as the stigma that went with being a woman seen holding or buying it.

Greg Hamilton (1976)

The only real negative thing I really remember is the problems it created for the straight males. When women looked at pics of naked men that were definitely larger than average. Regular guys started feeling insecure and self conscious about their size.

You’d be surprised now to know how much discussion went into that magazine with psychology students.  The professor put a challenge to the guys in the class to audition and relay the experience.  They wanted an actual model to come to our class to discuss how he felt being “a piece of meat”.  I volunteered.

It was a very different experience and led my appearing in the magazine.  Playgirl heard about the class experiment and actually invited two of us to appear in the magazine. My girlfriend was mortified and broke up with me. The magazine followed suit with Hefner’s idea and had a “Playgirl” club? It was in Garden Grove CA (about 8 miles from Disneyland) and did pretty good until the novelty wore off.

I have been trying to locate friends from those days that I remember went to the Playgirl Club, but no success so far. I do remember doubling with another couple and the girls wanting to go. Being the curious and a then member of the Playboy Club, I was open to it. The other guy was dead set against it so never went.

David White (1976)

My ex packed  away the issue with my images so that our son wouldn’t find them and wonder why Daddy was in all his glory in a magazine. After our break up, when my son was in teens, I told him and showed him the shots. Turns out he wasn’t too surprised since he had seen a pic of me on stage at my friends house. It surprised him the Playgirl spread took place while I was still in college and the dancing years later.

PS Since the subject had come up I dug out a g-string and put it on again. If only the body was the same as when I first wore it!!

Just Because: Farley Granger

'I lost my virginity twice in one night.'

Every time TCM plays an old Farley Granger movie, I go on the hunt for more info and images of the actor.  Last week, TCM played 1948's They Live By Night, and I DVR'd and watched. Although Granger does have a brief shirtless scene in the flick, my favorite Granger films are Rope and Strangers on a Train.  Seeing Granger on TCM also always has me wanting to head to Amazon and order his autobiography, something this time, maybe I'll finally do...

'Granger describes a Honolulu night that epitomized his life. A 21-year-old virgin and wartime Navy recruit, he was determined to change his status. He did so with a young and lovely prostitute. He was about to leave the premises when he encountered a handsome Navy officer. Granger was soon in bed again.'

Bubba Wallace: Display of Solidarity

'Just before today’s race, the entire field of NASCAR teams helped push racer Bubba Wallace’s No. 43 car through pit lane today in a display of solidarity after a noose was found in the Black driver’s garage last night.'

Today's display of solidarity  by NASCAR was a welcome sign.  There have been many signs things might be heading in more positive direction, but after the last Presidential election, it's understandable people are still hesitant to get too hopeful., yet....

I really know nothing a bout NASCAR, I've never watched, and honestly never had any interest in doing so.  I have however, like so many others, been in awe of Bubba Wallace, his strength, his determination and his desire for change.  Of course this is FH, so I had to go on the hunt to see if I could find more of Bubba, and maybe get a peak at what's under his racing suit.  Bubba's chest hair is a objet d'art.

Rory Kinnear in Women in Love

There were many hot men on Showtimes recent airing of the series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Daniel Zovatto and Johnathan Nieves are both beautiful, but there was another talented actor who caught my eye.  Actor Rory Kinnear appeared in the first Penny Dreadful, and even made up as 'the creature', there was something erotically appealing about him.

It was in his movements, in mannerisms, and especially in his eyes.  There wasn't much appealing about Kinnear's character Peter Craft, but Kinnear, as he did with 'the creature', managed to convey a humanity, a damaged character you were drawn to despite his cruelty and flaws.

Women in Love (2011)

Some may remember that I featured the 1970's film adaption of the D. H. Lawrence novel sevearal years ago.  (Wrestlemania)Fans of the male form know the film was as known for his nude male wresting scene as it was for Lawrence's beautiful dialogue.turned into British drama.  In the 1970 film version, it was actors Alan Bates and Oliver Reed rolling around naked in front of a huge fireplace.

I wasn't as aware, of the 2011 adaption of the story in the form of a BBC Mini-Series.  In this version, it was Kinnear and actor Joseph Mawle wrestling naked, in this version, on a beach.  Setting it on a beach made the nude wrestling a little more natural I suppose.  I was impressed that even the television re-make featured full nudity from both it's leading men.

Green Screen: Riley by JW Johnson

FH readers are familiar with my love of JW Johnson's work, and if you've checked out his website, (HERE:) you know it's quite a body of work indeed!  JW has assembled such a massive portfolio from his years of shooting the male form, that's overwhelming trying to choose a specific model or shoot for a feature.

In addition to the many models JW's has worked with, I'm also a huge fan of the old farm house, farm and barn he often shoots in.  It was in that barn, that I first saw images of Riley last year.  Initially, I thought the barn shoot might be a little more erotic than the shoots I usually feature, but decided to go forward and asked JW if he had any shots of Riley, well... less aroused, that I used to introduce the piece.  When JW sent back this series, I knew they needed a feature of their own.

'The shot of Riley in the gnarly cedar tree and the huge mossy walls and passages are a few miles away at Rim Rock Trails.'

When I first read 'Rim Rock', I had to google to ensure JW wasn't pulling my leg, but indeed, the Rim Rock trails lay close to the Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois.  I loved JW's shots of Riley surrounded by a cascade of so many shade of green.  Green is my favorite color, and I think almost every shade of green appears in the backdrop Mother Nature so graciously supplied for the shoot.

The combination of natural, and man made paths, caverns and moss covered walls provide an incredible setting for images of the male form.   Despite the location being a tourist attraction, and usually crowed with visitors,  JW shares that he and Riley managed to shoot with relatively few eyes on them.

'There were a.lot less people to put up with at Rim Rock than Garden of the Gods...we got lucky at Garden of the Gods, and shot down below all the big rocks on lesser known trails...most of the visitors there stand up on top of the huge rocks where the big views are located...and shot some in the campground there as well.'

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about JW's  shots of Riley in the barn, I'll feature them very soon.  Consider this set an introduction, a brief stop in the forest before arriving at your final destination in the barn.

An Adventurous Soul: Ethan Oliver by HowRoar Imagery

'As you can see, he is capable of being wildly sexy and then taking on an entirely different persona.'

As perfectly on point as 'wildly sexy' is as a descriptive, when it comes to model Ethan Oliver, it may actually be an understatement.   The first image of Ethan that I saw, is the final image featured at the bottom of this piece.  Bill (Howroar Imagery) had entered the shot in the Model Mayhem POTD contest last month. and it wasn't a surprise when the image ended up winning the contest that day.

Bill is not stranger to shooting sexy men.  FH may remember my profile last year featuring his work with Spencer. (Director's Cut) Bill's image always manage to grab my attention and that first shot of Ethan that I saw was powerfully enticing.  I love Ethan's pose and the way Bill framed and captured Chicago based model.. Although Ethan's hand is strategically place, enough is revealed to not only trigger the viewer's imagination, but erotically bolt it to attention.  Ethan is a stunner for sure, but his beautiful body and great head of hair and bangs are just the icing the on the cake.

Of course many models have great bodies, not all of them however, can command a viewers attention the way Ethan so beautifully manages to do within Bill's captures.  For me the power lies within Ethan's beautiful blue eyes.  Bill wisely keeps Ethan's eye a central focus in every one of his shots.  Ethan's eyes are not only incredibly beautiful, they're also incredibly welcoming, inviting the viewer in to enjoy what they're looking at.

Not all models are so welcoming with their eyes and facial expressions.  Some, while revealing their bodies, at times express a look, almost as if to cause the viewer to feel guilty about enjoying what they're seeing.  Ethan's eyes are focused on the viewer, participating in a back and forth with the viewer.  There's almost an 'I see you, seeing me' feel, which only adds to the images appeal.

In addition to being inviting, Ethan's eyes and face also provide a visual contrast which only increases how wildly sexy he is.  His eyes are both innocent, and wise, with a dash of the boy next door.  But like all boys next doors, they are both sweet, and infused with erotically charged energy.

Bill first mt Ethan through another model he had shot with.  Bill had also seen a shoot Ethan had done with the late great photographer Michael Dar.  Bill could see both Ethan's physical appeal, and his potential to generate dynamic imagery.  Ethan's natural quality, to create diverse and contrasting looks within images, was also something Bill looked to explore.

'Ethan has the ability to morph between young, boyish and innocent to sexy, virile and testosterone filled.'

In addition to capturing a variety different looks and themes, Billy also describes his work with Ethan as a lot of fun.  In addition to taking direction very well, Bill was impressed with his tremendous energy, and says it's always a pleasure shooting a model like Ethan who's so comfortable in his own skin.

'Ethan's also an adventurous soul and was willing to try many different types of shots to create something unique and beautiful. Not only is Ethan a very good model, he’s also an excellent musician and parkour enthusiast. He has a mischievous streak and a twinkle in his eye that is charming. I have no doubt that he could have a modeling career if he pursued it. I hope to shoot with him again some day.'

A Look Back: Daniel LaPaine in Muriel's Wedding

'Whoever marries David will have to tell the immigration authorities that they're in love with him. Now there'll be media attention so they'll have to live with David in his flat for at least four months after the marriage. I've worked out all the details of the romance, but the most important thing is to convince people that you two are really in love.'
Coach Ken Blundell

Whenever Muriel's Wedding is on television, I always flip on for a scene or two.  I have the 1994 flick on DVD somewhere, but I haven't turned on my DVD player in over a year.  I usually avoid some scenes, especially those involving Muriel's mother Betty. (Jeanie Drynan)

Jeanie is brilliant in the role, so brilliant, her scenes make me so sad, even though I've seen them before.  I prefer Jeanie hosting parties with nude men, as she did in 1976's Don's Party, which I previously posted about HERE:

Like so many film goers, Muriel's Wedding was also my introduction to the incredible Toni Collette.  Muriel Heslop was both lovable and heartbreaking, and painfully annoying.  Toni created an beautiful blend in Muriel, hopeful, painful and incredibly flawed.  Still something sill quite rare in cinema.  Film makers still try very hard to make us like characters, rather than making them fascinating and conflicting.

Like many, one of my favorite scenes to re-watch is Muriel and Rhonda's (Rachel Griffiths) rendition of Waterloo.  I've never enjoyed an ABBA performance more, and the scenes involving Muriel's 'mean girl' friends which surround the song are equally well done and fun.

Another favorite scene from the film was the introduction of Muriel's husband to be, South African swimmer David Van Arkle.  I think we were all Muriel when the delicious David popped out of the pool in his speedo.  Unfortunately, David wasn't quite as impressed with Muriel as she was with him.

With a few television appearances under his belt, Muriel's Wedding marked the film debut of Australasian actor Daniel LaPaine.  LaPaine has worked steadily since his film debut in movies and on television.  His most recent roles include appearing on The Durrells, Uptight and Black Mirror.  Although Muriel's Wedding didn't get LaPaine's speedo off, he did briefly show his beautiful behind on an episode of Black Mirror.
