'As a kid who played hockey, locker rooms were both an exciting and a dangerous place.'
Tye Briggs

I wrote about my experience in hockey locker rooms a couple of years ago in a Canada Day themed piece about hockey. ((With Glowing Hearts, We See Thee Rise)  I have vivid memories of the sights and the smells, but given I was still deep in the closet, I spent most of my time, trying not to be noticed looking around....  I certainly caught glimpses of my fellow team mates in their jock straps, and in less, but they were usually quick flashes as I kept my eyes and head constantly in motion.

Looking back, I really wish I'd been more relaxed, you miss a lot when you're constantly ducking and weaving.  It's fascinating to me however, that all those private peeks probably played a large part in why I began, and continue with the site.  FH provides a long, leisurely look at work of artists we admire, and the men we love, lust over and appreciate.  There's never any hurry to turn away,  nor ever any risk or judgement.

Today, we're heading into the locker room to enjoy Dave's (Immortal Form) work with Ethan.  I try when possible to feature Canadian photographers on July 1st, and FH may remember the Ottawa based photographer's work with Matt last Canada Day. (Cling Wrap)  Dave's work with Ethan was perfect for the day, and his story about the shoot, only enhanced my enjoyment.  Although I may have been a bit nervous being caught looking at hot hockey players in their jock straps, Ethan was a little nervous about sliding his underwear off...

There were no nerves on Ethan's first shoot with Dave.  It was back in 2015, and the focus of their work together was headshots and some fashion work.  Dave was in a job he wasn't really enjoying, and wanted to see if modeling might be a possibility.  Dave certainly thought he had the looks, and a slim, built physique due to all the sports he played.

The first shoot took place outside, and the parking garage location, was great for light and creating many great, and gritty shots.  Ethan was really happy with the photos, and set up a modeling account.  Before he was able to connect with other photographers however, he got another job, and had to head up North for work as a fire ranger and first responder.  Dave continued to talk with Ethan on and off and Dave eventually brought up the idea of a nude shoot.  Ethan was up for it, but Dave could tell he was a little nervous.  Given Ethan's love of the game, Dave suggested a hockey themed shoot. Ethan loved the idea, and liked the idea of starting the shoot in his uniform before removing it for the nude part of the shoot.

'The day of the shoot was a Saturday and we started with portraits and some fashion shots to help him relax and get into the modeling "groove". Normally Ethan's hair is much shorter but he came back from up north with the big hair style you see.  I think Ethan had gotten one shoot in with a friend of mine before going north so he was still fairly new to modeling.'

'Ethan then put on the hockey equipment, including a t-shirt and underwear. I had him pose in various looks and holding the stick in some positions with interesting angles. He was more relaxed so I asked him to remove the shirt. We did some more portraits then I had him start to do some slapshots. I figured if he was doing something he was very familiar with it would help him relax more. Motions like that can be very meditative, especially ones you've been practicing thousands of times since childhood. '

'This was Ethan's first nude shoot and only the third time he'd posed, so I wanted the transition to nudity to be as easy on him as possible. I wish I'd had a faster exposure (and flashes) so I could have captured the motion without blur. Ethan is FAST! Lol! We were about halfway through our time by this point and I realized I had to move things forward or we wouldn't get to the shots I wanted, so I said we were halfway through our time and we needed to start shooting the nudes. I asked Ethan if he was ok with removing the underwear...

Ethan still seemed  a little nervous because I remember as he walked off set to strip he asked something like "do we have to do it nude?" I replied, we do if we want to get the shots we planned for and want. With his back to me, Ethan awkwardly tried to remove his underwear while wearing his hockey gloves. It wasn't easy but he managed it!'

'Ethan's extremely lean with probably only 5 % or less body fat, and he has a swimmer's build. Although Ethan is about average height, that myth about lean men is no myth; Ethan's very gifted.
We started shooting with more slapshots, only nude this time. He was initially awkward I think, but got into the groove quickly. We did a few figure shots with the hockey equipment and he was really enjoying the shoot so I asked Ethan to take it all off.

Once he was completely nude we did a series of basic figure shots where the focus was more on posing his body and not having to give an expression. This is where I can see Ethan relaxed; ironically he was much more comfortable being entirely nude than he was with wearing part of his hockey uniform and posing with the stick trying to give expressions. We did quite a few shots and several of them are among my favorite photos.'

I know not everyone loves Justin Trudeau, but I truly appreciate so much about him.  His recent post about Pride, his taking a knee during a recent protest, his emotional apologies to LGBT Canadians and survivors of Residential Schools.  There's a lot to appreciate, but we can't forget about...his hair.

Yes, I know he delivered daily briefings during the pandemic, reassuring Canadians with words, not to mention fast and continued cash.  I think in addition to the reassurance however, most tuned in to check out his hair.  It got longer as the pandemic went on, requiring more hair flips, especially when the flurries swirled around him.

Compared the dangerous, intellectually stunted buffoon in The White House, and even with Trudeau's past mistakes, and there were many, Trudeau deserves respect. The brown on top, and touch of grey in his beard, beat the loud bright orange any time, and given world events, especially right now. Bring on November!!!

'Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.'
Roger Miller

Last Canada Day, FH celebrated with photographer Chris Teel's images of the delectable Peter Kelly. (Couleurs Nationales) In the holiday themed images, the Toronto based dancer, choreographer and model was wearing, (well, mostly not wearing...) red and white,  Canada's official colors.  This year, Peter's wearing (and again, mostly not wearing) a garment almost every Canadian has in their closet.

Given the weather in Canada can pivot from -20°C up to +30°C, sometimes in the span of just a few weeks, every possible form of precipitation is known to fall, sometimes all in one day.  It's not uncommon in the late fall or early spring to wake up to warmth and rain, deal with sleet and ice pellets on your commute home, and then head to bed to freezing temperatures and a dumping of snow.

Chris could have put Peter in a winter parka, but I prefer his choice of the see-through slicker. It might not keep Peter very warm, nor does it keep viewers from getting wet.  It does look especially hot however, slowly billowing over his incredible body.  You can check out more of Peter on his 'almost too hot for Instagram' page HERE:  or his entirely too hot for Instagram Just For Fans Site HERE:

Although Football and Baseball are the number one sports in the US, in Canada's, it's hockey.  Saturday is hockey night in Canada, and although the ratings have dropped since Don Cherry's departure, it remains a Saturday night staple for many Canadian families.

Given it's popularity, and my love of the game, hockey themes often pop up on FH,(HERE:) especially on July 1st.  Check out more of Immortal Form's images of Ethan, this year's team captain, as he steps onto the ice, and out of his gear, on PAGE 2 HERE:

Over the years, when putting together pieces for the site, I often find patriotically posed images of the models I'm spotlighting.  Sometimes they're sent on by the artist, other times, they pop up when I'm searching for just the right image to include.

Benjamin J Goldman

The images in this piece, are all of models I've featured over the years.  Most of the images, I was sent or found when putting together the original piece.  I stuck them away in my 'holiday' file to use on a future Forth of July.

The White of the Sand,
The Blue of the Sea,
The Red of the Sunset

Most Fourth of July's, many reveler's head to the beach.  The sun, the sand, and the thousands of other beach goers spending their holiday by the ocean.  Due to the pandemic, and because so many chose to ignore the fairly straight forward guidelines, this year,  many beach will be closed on the 4th.

That doesn't mean you still can't get taste of the salty air through a vigorous virtual visit from photographer Tom Nakielski. Due to the pandemic, this was Tom's first session in three months, since the shutdown in March.  When frequent creative collaborator Hansel Wellington contacted Tom when restrictions were being lifted and suggested they try having a session with face masks in keeping with social distancing.

I have been a bit resistant about about featuring models in face masks on the site. After the shut down began, my social media pages were full of masked models and people taking selfies.  I guess maybe I briefly hoped the pandemic might pass more quickly, and face masks would have just been a temporary means of safety.  As time went however, masks have become even more essential, and an important part of daily lives when stepping beyond the safety of our homes.

But, Lights On Studio, and Hansel Wellington are holiday traditions on FH, so when Tom suggested a USA flag mask, I jumped on board. Tom's theme included capturing a beautiful summer Fourth of July day at the beach, featuring Flag themed attire, and even a few sparklers to get lit. Although Tom's beach was created in a studio, it didn't mean he and Hansel were immune to the heat.  As time went on, the temperature began to rise, forcing Hansel to come up with creative ways to beat the heat.

'As the day progressed and it got hotter, Hansel began to start stripping off his clothes. Since there was no one around to be concerned about both exposing himself and to be concerned about social distancing it was time to shed the mask too. Yes, celebrating the freedom to be mask free. Free at last.'

It's a good thing the shoot didn't actually occur outside on a beach.. Seriously, it would be almost impossible  for the other sunbathers to socially distance themselves from Hansel's incredible ass.  It would be especially tempting to break the rules given how seductively Hansel welcomes you aboard...

'It was a fun shoot. Hansel helped me with setting up backgrounds and props. I nominate him for photo assistant (in the nude) of the year. And yes,I was glad to see that, given the shut down, I hadn't forgotten how to use the camera and set up the lights.'

Sacred Symbols: Trevor Smith by Studio1x

'As for my tattoos where do I start... my first tattoo I received was the outline of the raven when I was 16 for friends who had passed. I was enamored by the permanence of owning something that couldn’t be taken.'

Our lives are constructed around symbols, visual designs and color combinations that mark life's highs, and life's lows.   The visuals however, are only emblems, it's our experience and interpretation which give them meaning.  Arguably the world's most well known symbol, the cross, has been used to spread both love and hate.

For the forth of July, the American flag is the countries most vibrant and visual symbol of celebration. Historically, every element of the flag had meaning.the stripes represent the original 13 Colonies, the stars the 50 states of the Union. Each of the three colors are symbolic as well; red symbolizing hardiness and valor, white symbolizing purity and innocence, and blue representing vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Given the countries current divisions, it's clear the red, white and blue represent entirely different things to different groups of people.  This year in particular, the white is more of a dirty gray.  I still get sense of wonderment at the sight and sound of a colorful flag billowing in the wind.  For me, it doesn't represent so much what is, but what can be, if those original symbols, are respected and remembered.

With so many traditional symbols becoming chaotic and blurred, it's no wonder so many are turning toward more personal symbols.  These artistic expressions are rooted in more uniquely intimate moments of meaning.  Representations of moments, joy and triumph for sure, but maybe more importantly, embedding permanent scars as reminders, of momentous pain and loss.

As universal symbols have lost their meaning, personal symbols and body art, have grown in popularity. It wasn't that long ago, tattoos were still associated with  gang members, sailors and deviant behavior.  Tattoos have become more common, breaking social and cultural norms, with tattoo shops in almost every neighborhood.   Although Italy has the highest percent of tattooed people, at 48%, Sweden and the US follow closely behind with 47% and 46%, respectively.

When it comes to tattoos' on the human form, I've always had conflicting feelings about they're impact in visuals and photos.  I always remind myself, they're really not about the viewer.  Tattoo's are less about the end result, and more about the process that led to their creation.  I still struggle at times with bodies with a few tattoos.  To me, if you're going to create art, you need to fill the entire canvas.

No one paints a flower in the top corner of a painting, leaving the remainder of canvas blank. Model Trevor Smith filled his canvas, every inch of it, with a different symbol, design and visual.  Like all great pieces of art, every corner of his canvas demands attention, and the viewer can easily spend hours devouring each piece of art.  Analyzing and looking for meaning and the catalyst, for every bit of ink.  Thankfully for us, Trevor graciously filled in many of the blanks.

'After that first tattoo, I waited until my 18th birthday to continue, with the banner on my chest. My right arm is a “alive but dead” sleeve and my left arm is a “dead but alive sleeve”, with my right representing the toll of being alive and the left memorializing a few who have passed. One leg is regular shading, one is only linework and stipple. I try to use only color splashes, filling in the rest with grayscale shades and blacked out portions.'  The pain in hours seems incomparable to the feeling of something you will certainly take to your grave so I’ve dedicated a lot of time and resources to this art project. .

Parents often use the phrase 'it's permanent' to deter their children from getting tattoos.  I love that Trevor embraced this permanence, and see his body art as something which never can be taken.  There's very little in life that we count on always being our own.  Relationships, jobs and belongings, will at some point, all come to an end.  Tattoo's will follow us beyond, even our time on earth, a part of us until our bodies cease to exist.  For some this might seem depressing, but to me, Trevor's word are the most powerful endorsement for tattoos that I think I've ever heard.

Trevor's tattoos are also the reason, he connected with Jim from Studio1x.  Jim first met Trevor last year while attending a group photoshoot.  Jim was intrigued by Trevor's ink and really wanted to photograph him.  During the group shoot they began talking and Jim asked about his body art.  Trevor shared with Jim his plans for a new tattoo, this one, included some cherubs to be placed just above his genitals.

'Trevor lowered his jeans to show me the area that he was planning on having them done. By his actions, I assumed that he was open and comfortable with his body.  I decided to ask if he was open to doing some nude photos.  He replied with a yes.  We decided to start right away and walked away from the group and down a trail and into the woods where we did our session.  The images were beautiful. We seemed to really connect and liked each other's style so we planned a second shoot for the near future.'

'Our next shoot was a studio shoot. We shot many different looks and we were able to use some of those photos to get Trevor his first publication. We continued to stay in contact and Trevor would tell me about his new tattoos and we talked about ideas for our next shoot.  With the pandemic however,  our shoot kept getting pushed further out.'

'When planning for FH 4th of July shoot, I thought Tevor would be perfect for the look that I was going for this year. What I like about working with Trevor is that we build upon each other's ideas, we start out with an idea then build upon it till we get the outcome that makes us both go Wow! Trevor's body of art is never complete, he is always working with his tattoo artist in coming up with new ideas, drawings and then making them into live art. What I love about his body of art, is each tattoo has a meaning and a story behind them. By the time we finish each shoot, we are already talking about our next.'

'Two misfit best friends, Dar and Tuck, leave their dying coal-mining town with only one goal in mind, to reach sunny California and hook up with some beach babes. On the road, they meet gun-crazy outlaw Annie, and she takes over.'

Most holidays, including the Fourth of July I try to find a film, and a nude scene, to fit the holiday's theme.  This year, it's 1987's Made in U.S.A.   I had seen a few clips of the film on-line, but struggled to find a decent copy to buy, watch and make screen captures.  The film is one of many that never made the jump from VHS to DVD, so most of the clips and copies available are fairly low in quality.

After finding the film on Youtube, I decided to order a DVD transfer of the film.  I've always loved Adrian Pasdar, and loved the brief nude scene of Adrian and Christopher Penn stripping down in a laundromat.  Sadly, the quality of the DVD I purchased had about the same quality as the Youtube version, but it did inspire to continue with the piece.

Christopher Penn also co-starred in Footloose, but he went on to work fairly steadily until his death in 2006 at just 40 years old.  I always thought Penn was adorable in Footloose, especially when dancing to 'Let's Here it for the Boy.'  He certainly looks hot naked, even if we only see his butt for a split second.

Just a week or two ago, TCM actually aired the film, but sadly, it wasn't cleaned up for broadcast, and was still low quality VHS version. I did still want to feature it as it's an interesting glimpse back at the eighties.  Lori Singer segued her TV role on Fame into a brief, very brief film career.  Singer hit big with Footloose, but wasn't really ever able to equal that early success.

Adrian Padar, in one of his early film roles, was really the only star of the film to go on to sustain a career, and still appears regularly on television and in films.  In someways, the film, and it's cast, are very much a metaphor for the American Dream.  Although at the time of filming this movie, each of the three main stars were young, with hopes and dreams of bright futures in show business.  As we know however, the American Dream so seldom turns out in the way you hope and plan for.

The movie does a great job of setting up the hopelessness found in many depressed small towns, and follows the main characters on their journey to get as far away as they possibly can.  They do manage to make it out, and to the sunny beaches of California.  Thankfully, they lost Lori Singer's character, (and most of their hair) along the way.

Pasdar has two nude scenes in the film, the laundromat scene, and darkly lit brief sex scene with Lori Singer. (below)

Below: Pasdar and Penn at the laundromat.  Maybe one day there will be a hi-def version of the film.

'We act not for ourselves but for the whole human race.'
Thomas Jefferson

With the pandemic seemingly prevailing, suborning hanging on in many parts of the country, Jefferson's quote is as relevant than ever.  Over the last few decades, humans around the world have been sadly taught, that patience isn't actually a virtue. We've learned to hate waiting, and that we deserve what we want, when we want it, and we always want it right now.

The pandemic is testing the patience of everyone, and it's oddly fascinating to see who has the where-with-all to sacrifice personal wants for the greater good of a healthy and safe community to live in.  It's not that difficult to eat a hot dog, light a firework, and sing the Star Spangled Banner in small groups, a few feet from anyone you don't share a home with.  Compared to the sacrifices so many who came before us had to make, it seems trivial, so many consider this against their rights, and ar to much work.

To all those celebrating this weekend, I wish you a happy 4th, but a 4th with safe, and socially distant moments of pride of celebration.  Happy 4th of July!

Blast from the Past: Ralph Waite in Cool Hand Luke

$

This post was originally going to be for Father's Day. I ended up running out of space, but still wanted to include it.  When Father's Day was approaching, I began thinking about Hollywood 'Father Figures' and was trying to find the right actor to feature.  I then remembered the piece I did about Paul Newman's only nude scene  (HERE:) in the 1967's Cool Hand Luke.

I remember that as surprised as I was to find out Newman actually had a nude scene, the film also included the brief butt baring of Pa Walton, actor Ralph Waite. In the film, Waite plays Alibi, and he sadly  has to suffer being locked up in the shack the same way Luke was.  The ritual required the inmate to strip down before being locked up.

Newman's nude scene took place at night and was dark, Waite's on the other hand has a lot more light.  I'm sure I've seen repeats of The Waltons, but wasn't born when it first came on the air.  I do remember my mother watching repeats, but mostly remember Waite from television guest appearances, including seeing him not to long before his death in 2014, as a minister on Days of our Lives.
