Hung: Woody Fox by Ryan Scott

As I stated above, Ryan's Scott's imagery weaves beauty, erotic with just a hint of disconcertion. You can feel it, even when you can't quite put your finger on it. Sure, there are obvious clues like the naked body holding the scull, then naked body covered in blood and of course the naked man hiding the scissors behind his back. That disconcerting feeling however is there in many of Ryan's images, it is the feeling that things are not quite as they appear.

Ryan knows skilfully how to lure in his viewers. You initially think your joining him in the tub for an erotic bubble bath. As you move from image to image however you begin to wonder if the goal of the bath is not to arouse, but instead to snuff out. I often get the feeling something sinister is about to occur in many of the theme's Ryan captures.

That is precisely what happened when enjoying Ryan's shoot with Woody Fox. Woody is a aerial circus performer and I instantly feel in love with the images of Woody in the air. As I spent time with the many captures from the shoot, a feeling of apprehension, maybe even dread began to rise.

I think part of it was the setting. An incredible setting, a barn, with Ryan beautifully framing Woody in what once was a window with the natural light which shown through the opening and slats in the wood. The barn, initially beautiful, started to feel dangerous. Long abandoned, isolated, I was reminded of the old barns horror movies such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Woody, so breathtaking in the air, also at times appeared lifeless, hanging as if left their to die. I could imagine hundreds of women an men hung by the buildings wooden beams during the witch trials in Salem or after a bloody battle during a battle or war.

I shook myself from the dread to go back to enjoying the beauty of the images when I came upon the image below.  Stuck among the others, near the bottom of the page I was viewing,  appeared Woody, hanged, not hung from the same ropes that previously caressed his body. I instantly knew artist and model had similar thoughts as myself as they shot, Ryan included the image without words, without warning, to give a bit of a jolt to the unsuspecting viewer, in this case me.

I think that is part of Ryan's sill and magic. As an artist, he lures you with with beautiful bodies, images and poses, then shakes you with an unexpected jolt.  A surge of artistry, a twist to cause you to think differently about what your looking at. I know I did with these images of Woody. A hot Naked aerialist hanging high within an old barn would have impressive enough as a theme. The added layers weaved in make the trip so much more interesting and dangerous.

My first introduction to Ryan Scott was as a model back in 2010. The wonderful Michael Puff sent on images for a piece entitled Private Moments Made Public. I quickly discovered Ryan's modeling was simply an arm of his overall visual artistry. Ryan ran a blog at that time titled The Direct Desire Project which as Ryan says on the front page is made up self portraits, nature and junk I like.

I was rather found of Ryan's work, and his junk, and featured his self portrait (like the beautiful ones shown here) on FH, my favorite being the 2011 piece At The Top Of The Stairs. The last few times I headed by to Ryan's blog I was disappointed there were no new updates. Recently, I was back and finally opened my eyes (duh) wide enough to notice Ryan's link to his tumblr, Photo Interdit.

On his tumblr, Ryan continues to feature self portraits, nature and landscapes of San Francisco and more junk to love. There is also a focus on Ryan's imagery featuring other models, in themes and situations that more than live up to the tumblr's main title. I quickly shot Ryan an e-mail and he again voiced support for me featuring is work. It was difficult to narrow down a shoot or model to start with. There was something rather both beautiful, and also disconcerting, about the shoot I finally picked. Check it out for yourself below.

The 11th Commandment for going Commando this Summer

With winter over, we require less layering and for many, time to fold up the flannel and tighty whities for a few months. During the dog days of summer, many men decide to let things all hang out, and choose to go commando. It is hot and sticky and some of our area's, in need of warmth during the winter, now need fresh air to breath. A couple of years ago, Details did a 10 commandment list to going Commando. With the opening of bar and pub outdoor patio's, and more people eating outside, I felt the need to an an 11th.

Olympiad by Mark Leighton

There are certain times during the year when my mind wanders to images which capture a specific feel or theme. Living in the North East, during the late spring, whilst awaiting summer to officially arrive, and again in late August, as I lament the impending end to beach days, I again find myself beautifully drawn to the work of photographer Mark Leighton.

Mark's panoramic seascapes, capturing incredible men on the breathtaking beaches of Portugal, act as an visual and erotic antidote. Mark's images of sun drenched bodies, posed on sandy beaches; the beautiful blues and greens of the Atlantic, the rock formations and especially those sunsets, counteract much or damage winter has ravaged on our souls.

With the summer solstice just over a week away, I found myself once again drawn toward's Mark's. The timing of my contacting Mark proved fortuitous not only because of the change of seasons. The particular image that I initially asked Mark about, was of a model he is currently working on a book project with. I look forward to featuring some of the images from the book when it is closer to completion. In the meantime, Mark sent on some shot from a project he began a few years ago with the Ancient Olympic Games as the theme.

Originally, the images were created to tie into a project that a model agent was putting together. The idea was to shoot images for the possible creation of a television series along the lines of Spartacus. Sadly, the show never saw the light of day, but Mark enjoyed the theme and continued shooting several other models, hoping he might a use for the images some day.

'Needless to say, there is a fair amount of artistic license within the theme. but the general idea of young athletes preparing or competing in the nude, in natural surroundings, is one that I hope is aesthetically pleasing.'

I have always felt Mark's images, maybe in part due to the location, have had a timeless feel. The land, and men upon it seem beautifully unaffected by time or barrage of forced civilization. The shots were for the most part, taken on the Algarve's west coast. Mark reports the beaches there are longer, with less man made intrusions and most importantly, all very natural. It was a long trek down the beach but that was required to get away from the 21st century population! Living in a small town, Mark says props were hard to come by. Fortunately, the costumes, if there were any, were not complicated and a "distressed" curtain pole served as a javelin.

Mark was never quite sure why the project fell through but by then he had shot five models in the theme. He hopes maybe one day to put them all together in a book and hopes to shoot a few more guys, especially two or three at a time, to get the feeling of competition. Maybe it was the historical reason behind the shoot, but Mark reports less resistance to shooting full nudity with the ancient Olympic theme. With the next summer games just a couple of years away, Mark is considering finding a Brazilian model or two and tying it in with the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro!

A Few Weeks Before: Kris by Nathan Scott

Regular readers of FH understand that my passion for presenting incredible imagery goes beyond just was is seen. I am equally, and sometimes more so, interested in how what we see, came to be. Getting inside the head of the artist, and often times the model, to find out what exactly was behind the inspirations that led to the finished image or images that grabbed my attention.

When I came upon the work of Dallas photographer Nathan Scott last month, I knew I had found something special. Nathan's portfolio was full of striking images of both men and women, and his focus was beautifully not singular, but had a breadth which ranged from editorial, fashion and fitness, couples and color and erotic and nudes. Nathan, a professional ballet dancer and stunt actor, has a keen eye for body movement and pose and there are small, practically unnoticeable details, almost a fluidity, the artist incorporates within his work that has his images stand out for me.

Although Nathan has a great selection of models, there were a few that stood out for me, Kris Best being one of them. Kris has a great look and an incredible body highlighted by tattoo running down the right side of his body. Kris also has a great face, his eyes light up when he smiles yet can become sensually intense when the theme requires it. I love some the contrasts Nathan captured. Kris has a very masculine, almost all American look, yet Nathan did not rest on that and created some very beautiful lines with his body and with pose.

So, I began with story, so I should give a little background, and explore a bit of the background behind this set of images. It began with a couple of posts I made in May, well actually... it began a few weeks before that. I first introduced Nathan's work on FH in two of last months most popular, and clicked on posts, Fleet Week and my follow-up, The Culmination of Fleet Week. The focus was Nathan's work with Gregory Stiles inspired by the sailor hat Nathan picked up on the way to the shoot.

The images in Fleet Week actually developed from this shoot with Kris that Nathan had shot a few weeks previously. The shoot was for an underwear campaign for Blue Collar Underwear. Nathan really loved the location, especially the bed and bathtub, so after shooting Kris, proceed to set up another shoot, this time with Gregory and his girlfriend.

'Kris was a great guy to work with. The night before this shoot, when we were using a generator in this really historic downtown area in Texas, the generator broke down. Should never have rented it from Home Depot. We had planned on working together the next day and it started raining. So we shot at the makeup artists house using only natural light. No studio lights or anything else. Which was a challenge. As the rain let up we eventually ventured outdoors.'

Not sure it was the intent, but I love the trajectory of the story created by Nathan in this series of images. The day begins with Kris alone at home, thinking about, then getting ready. He slips into the tub, bathing, preparing in anticipation for his visitor, and sure to lie ahead. He is later joined by his guest for an intense entanglement of passion. The story's last chapter concludes with Kris again alone, this time in the shower. He is again washing, cleansing, but this time, not in preparation, but as conclusion.

Keep an eye out next month for the unveiling of Pastiche. Pastiche is an up and coming magazine founded by Nathan Scott Photography. The focus is high fashion, fine art, and high quality digital art photography. I will keep you updated on the magazine's official launch!

Forrest Gump: An Appreciation

'Me and Jenny goes together like peas and carrots.'
Forrest Gump

Next month it will be 20 years since Forrest Gump was released in the US. It was the summer just after I had graduated high school and I remember going with a group of friends at the beginning of what turned out to be an eventful, and rather emotional summer. I had not seen the film in it's entirety until an airing on AMC a few weeks ago. Since it's release, there have been so many parody's so many jokes that I had forgotten what a powerful punch it packed. 'Life was like a box of chocolates' seems to be the thing, the quote most think of, but there was so much more about the film worthy remembering.

I was never really a fan of Jenny as an adult. Robin Wright was good, but the character always bugged me a bit. I guess she was supposed to, given her childhood, writer Winston Groom created a very realistic adult Jenny, one who struggled with attachment most of her young adult life. I did however love Jenny and Forrest and kids. Actors Michael Conner Humphreys and Hanna Hall had beautiful chemistry and created magic in each of their few scenes together. As wonderful as the film was, I personally could have watched these two young actors for much longer than was shown in the film.

There was a purity to the relationship, from their first meeting on school bus through how each gave the other strength to deal with the demons they faced. There relationship went through many ups and downs but came full circle with the introduction of Forrest Jr. (Haley Joel Osment) at the end of the film.

Despite his success as young Forrest, Michael Conner Humphreys career didn't exactly take off after the film. In 2005 he joined the army and spent time in Iraq. After three years of services however, his enlistment ended and Humphrey's again made his way to Hollywood to pursue his acting dreams. His only credit was the 2011 film, Pathfinders: In The Company of Strangers. I must see if I can find it, I would be curious to see if the essence he brought to young Forrest is still intact after his time away from film, and his experiences during the war.

After Humphreys, and Hanks of course, another actor who made an impact in the film was Gary Sinise. Lieutenant Dan made a memorable, and shirtless, entrance and Sinise garnered an Oscar nomination for his role but lost to Martin Landau in Ed Wood. Sinise went on to co-star in Apollo 13 and The Green Mile but by 2005 he was on the CSI track, not one usually creatively rewarding for actors who enjoy acting. Television procedurals are for the most part, designed for actors on their way up, or their way down. Nor sure if the actors politics have played a role in his career's holding pattern, but I have recently become more interested in his music. The Lt Dan Band supports the many military based charities and organizations.

Television Worth Spending Time With: Penny Dreadful

$

If you have not watched, or even heard of, Showtime's Penny Dreadful, I would highly recommend you check it out. I was initially sceptical, burned out on Vampire drama's and cable shows others seem to love that I can't get into. Believe me, you won't regret giving Penny Dreadful a try. Beautifully written and created by John Logan, the shows center is actress Eva Green, who if not nominated for an EMMY will be a crime. She is memorizing in every scene, her episode 2 seance scene, and the entire episode 5 being an acting tour de force. Penny Dreadful is one part Downton Abbey mixed with a dash of Sweeney Todd, a wee bit of True Blood (just a wee) and a large dose of disturbed. The show lives up to it's title, bringing together stories and characters from the past together in a beautifully bloody way

Green is surrounded by a group of men, three of which I have featured on FH and I one I shockingly have not. First the overlooked, not sure why the delicious Timothy Dalton has not been on the blog but he should have been. Dalton plays Sir Malcolm to Green's Vanessa Ives and together they lead the crew investigating the disappearance of his daughter. The culprit, the Beast and although frightening, it was only in the few scenes with the beast, the show weakened a bit. The characters and story is so strong, the beast is much more frightening when we don't actually see it.

Timothy Dalton

I first featured actor Harry Treadaway in a small birthday post with his actor brother Luke back in 2008. (HERE:) Harry plays Dr. Victor Frankenstein and thus far his storyline has been the most compelling and Treadaway, the most fascinating actor to watch.

Harry Treadaway

The pilot has Frankenstein bringing life to his monster, a beautiful, quiet and naked re-born the good doctor instantly falls in love with. Sadly the love doesn't last long when his first born, the creature, returns to reclaim his place in the family. Rory Kinnear is incredible as the creature. His ability to be both horrifically violent and gut-wrenchingly heartbreaking is powerful to watch. Kinnear, along with Green, are the shows two power houses in the cast. Kinnear's story, especially his Phantom of the Theatre twist is one of the reasons the show works. It is so beautifully shot, wtih dramatic visuals and breath taking cinematography with are all highlighted in the Theatre's scenes and setting. John Logan also is a brilliant dialogue writer, poetic and so many quotes I gave up trying to remember.

Rory Kinnear

Josh Hartnett

I am so glad to see Josh Hartnett back in front of the camera. I was never really a fan of his look or his acting but I that has all changed with his role of Ethan Chandler. Hartnett has grown into his looks and has never looked hotter. His acting also fits perfectly with his character, a side show Western performer who has lived most of his life on his his own. Chandler has a secret, but his inability to support others in pain is something I am sure we will learn more about soon.

Straight and gay are not really concepts defined on Penny Dreadful, instead sexuality is wonderfully fluid. Although Hartnett's Chandler has a woman he loves on the show, it didn't stop him spending an interesting evening with oh so beautiful Dorian Gray. Many of the shows characters appear to have a leaning for one sex or another but so far it hasn't limited their sexual exploration and I hope the show continues to treat sexuality this way.

Reeve Carney

Broadway's Spiderman, actor Reeve Carney plays Dorian Gray on the show and brings a cup of creep into his portrayal of the character. Like his character, Reeve is beautiful, eerily so at times, and the pain of such has only been scratched on the surface thus far. Dorian has moved in and out of sexual encounters with both Green and Hartnett, as well as many others both male and female. The character was introduced enjoying being coughed on with the blood of a woman suffering from consumption.

The show has wisely removed Reeve's clothes several times in the first six episodes. Leads Hartnett and Reeves have both had nude scenes along with Green and several of the shows so-stars and extras. Thus far the nudity seems to be evenly spread out, maybe a slight edge to the men. The nudity is great, but not the main reason to watch the show. It has been awhile since I got so quickly caught up in a new show, but this show is emotionally, visually and theatrically a feast for the eyes and ears. If you have the ability to check it out, start with the pilot and give it at least 3 episodes. Love to see what others think of John Logan's masterpiece.

Recrudescence: Charles by Pierre Jean

'As a photographer, I am interested in how the relationship between the camera and the model can capture an essence that transcends plain portraiture. I am also interested in abstract "bodyscapes". I like to work with uninhibited models open to exploration.'

I was first introduced to photographer Pierre Jean was back in 2011, while putting together a series of posts on model. Samuel Boux Since then, I have often returned to admire the Montreal artists work. I love Pierre's use of the term bodyscape as it so beautifully describes the the beautiful lines and shapes he creates within his images. Pierre often contrasts the lines of body with another shape, often a square, a block or frame which acts as a support, complimenting the model.

On my most recent revisit of Pierre's work, it was not the lines or bodyscapes that drew me a particular set of images. It was also not the Game Of Thrones feel to some of the images. My compulsion to feature Pierre's work with model and artist Charles Lemelin Gladu was all about his incredible blue eyes. Soulful, Charles eyes ground each image in artist sorrow, not quite sad, but more thoughtful as if absorbed in creative musings. I also love the 24 year old's long hair, especially how he pulls it back, beautifully completes the look of a tired and tortured young artist.

'Tout d'abord, en plus d'être un modèle très expressif, je suis aussi sculpteur, maroquinier(travail du cuir) et tatoueur. Je travaille également dans les décors et accessoires de films.'

Charles says he adore everything related to role playing and costumes, especially post-apocalyptic and the medieval theme used in part of his shoot with Pierre. Charles creates and makes may of the costumes used in his shoots and you can see more of his costumes, and work as a tattoo artist, on his facebook page HERE: Charles won't be putting together too many costumes this summer as he is spending most of it outside, planting tree's to better the environment.
