The Bottom Line

'A cellist is quite unmistakable. There is a touch of nostalgia that can be recognized like a scar, left from a long battle-often a losing one-against the odds of his instrument. His melancholic disposition is particularly apparent when he has to perform something spirited and gay, often found in passages written in such awkward positions as to make them sound sad enough for tears.'

I love the cello,  and the above quote from Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.  I also love this image, breath taking and parraell's the beautiful solidarity a cellist must accept. If you can help me credit the artist, please let me know. My research only indicates it is an image from an Art Calendar, but nothing on the artist thus far.

A Room With A View: Kennedy by Ryan Scott

'Waking up with the man I love, making breakfast, taking a long walk with the dog in the city.'

The description of how Kennedy Carter would describe his version of a perfect day sounds pretty ideal to me. The quote comes from an interview, Not That Kid, by the artist behind this set of images Ryan Scott. In the interview, featured on Summer Diary, one of the industries best loved gingers, discusses the ephemeral nature of a career in porn, the challenges of celebrity and what ultimately makes him happy.

Revisiting Ryan's work this past month or so, I have been impressed with the themes and shores he creates and majestic locations he has chosen to set his subject. Last month I featured his work with Woody Fox, hanging naked from the rafters in an old barn. (Hung) Today, another model is high in the air, this time flanked by New York City outside of the windows below.

One of Ryan's goals is exploring the sensual nature of male vulnerability within his work. I love how he has done that in both his work with Woody and this series with Kennedy. Many photographers choose to shoot porn performers exhibiting the persona fans have come to know them by. I love when an artist shows others facets of their personalities, especially parts more easily to relate to.

The New York apartment, and it's panoramic window outlooks are certainly incredible. They balance beautifully, but don't take away from, our focus on Kennedy. His great body, poses and flashes of red are highlighted beautifully by the natural light that cascades and surround him.

Iwan Rheon: Viciously Adorable

PBS has been my gateway to enjoying many of the best of British sit-coms. Keeping Up Appearances, Vicar of Dibley and Are You Being Served were all shows I fist caught as a kid on PBS. This past Sunday, the networked premiered Vicious, the show featuring Freddie and Stuart, a gay couple who have been living, and fighting, together for nearly 50 years.

The show stars features Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen as Freddie and Stuart and actress Frances de la Tour as their best friend Violet. Although the show was not especially great on the page, the actors, maybe especially Francis, made the 30 minutes fly by with their delivery. I know I have seen Frances before, but I cannot remember where, must have been her Harry Potter appearances but it has been awhile since I saw the films.

Rounding out the cast is an adorable actor many may know from Game Of Thrones and other projects Iwan Rheon. Iwan plays Ash, the cutie who moves into the flat above where Freddie and Stuart reside. Iwan throws the boys into a whirl when he arrives on the scene and it is no wonder. Iwan is a very appealing actor and his character very open to his slew of older new friends. The show began airing last year in the UK but has just now made it to our television screens. If you missed the first episode, PBS has the first two shows on line to preview HERE:

Home Of The Brave: Caleb by Nathan Scott

'We were shooting at a friends apartment who was also a photographer and he pulled these wings out of the closet. Caleb looked at me and was like are you serious... I did not think it was going to work or look good at all. We found a belt and tied the wings to them.'

'I felt that we needed to masculine him up as much as we could, so the small leather straps were actually pulled off of my make-up artists purse and we tied them around him. We had a PA sitting behind Caleb right by his buttwith a fan blowing the wings up. And it took two people to grab the wings off camera and then throw them towards the fan just as the strobes went off. It was a mess. But it ended up working great.'

Since first discovering his work in May, I have immersed myself in the creatively charged imagery of photographer Nathan Scott. Nathan generously shared a few of his shoots, and like the one above, the stories that led to their creation. I loved hearing how Fleet Weekwas inspired by chance, with the choosing of a prop, and how the story of Caleb's wings awkwardly, but eventually took flight.

The conception for these images began when Nathan was looking for new models to shoot for Blue Collar Underwear. Caleb was a fraternity boy at the same school Nathan had gone to and they connected through a mutual friend. Nathan went into the shoot knowing he was shooting for the underwear line, but at the back of his head was the July launch of his new magazine Pastiche. With Pastiche launching this week, seemed a great time to feature Nathan's images of Caleb.

'It was his first time in front of the camera and he was a little nervous, but he totally went for it. Caleb let me shoot whatever I wanted and was a great sport!'

Nathan remembered an image, one he wanted to create from a famous photographer. That image was where the uniform came in. With the the theme of Pastiche's first issues being Stars & Stripes: Red White And Blue, it seemed a perfect time to blend the two ideas. With Caleb's lean body, Nathan's idea was to create a hunter/warrior theme using the helmet and combat knife he had brought. The Fourth of July has become in some ways a holiday of heroes, a celebration of the freedoms the country enjoys, and the bigger than life men and women who fought to secure them.

The reality of course is those who fight for our freedoms are as human, flawed and wonderfully normal as the rest of us. But, when the stakes are high, and the chips are down they find the strength and power to exude a stamina and bravery the rest of us must admire and respect. There is a kind of magnetism that draws us in to this type of force, especially on the 4th. It is this strength Nathan strived to bring out in Caleb and I think he rose to the challenge. I think interestingly enough, the shots with Caleb in the wings demonstrate it most to me. There is an erotic warrior feel to them that exemplify the beauty of confidence and strength.

I'm not sure if on holidays, FH readers click on the blog with dread or anticipation. Either way, I know my holiday posts are predictable, and something I not only enjoy, but find a fun challenge. Each year it gets more and more difficult to find unique images that have not been seen before. Thankfully, there are some wonderful artists I have connected with, many of whom have been generous and have shared new holiday imagery with myself and FH readers.

These five images have come from an artist who many of you know has become synonymous with holidays on the blog. Jay from Frisky Frolic continues to shoot new and exiting imagery, especially around holiday time. Here are a few of my favorites,  including Mr. Jaxon (above) wearing the flag most patriotically! This year I am also thrilled to feature a shoot from Nathan Scott as well as a look back at some of my most combustive forth of July themed posts and images.

So... If you're celebrating the holiday, or maybe especially if you're not... Whether you're off to the beach, a bbq or a family get together, or whether your sticking inside with your AC or have to go into work.... Enjoy a few FH inspired fireworks on this 4th of July.

Urban Circus: Diego Serna by Mark Grantham

Mark Grantham's cirque érotique is my favorite of the many themes the Santa Cruz artist explores. Diego's shoot with Mark came about while he was looking for inspirations for upcoming shoots. Diego says that he stumbled upon Mark's work and messaged him, complementing his imagery. In turn, Mark checked out Diego's video on YouTube and the seeds of collaboration were planted.

'Mark was extremely professional and respectful of my hesitation to be naked in front of camera. I soon felt completely comfortable shooting with him.'

'Diego was a great guy who found me on Google, he'd seen my work with another aerialist and tracked me down. Diego was pushing his own envelope a bit, but the shoot was something he wanted to do before his birthday. He found the location, and he had all of the props. He made it easy for me!'

Not To Be Tried At Home: The Artistry Of Diego Serna

Some of you might have noticed that one of my favorite themes to explore on FH has been Circus. The combining of passions usually leads to a deeper or meaningful connections to the images I feature. I first described my love of circus in a post I wrote for a circus day theme back in 2012. Since then, I have taken every opportunity to feature many modern artists from the circus including acrobats, jugglers, clowns, the German Wheel and my favorite, aerial acts including trapeze, ropes and aerial silk performers.

Image above from Trent Chau

Combing the photographing of the male form with the artistry aerial performers is a perfect fit. As with dancers, aerial performers are able to create extraordinary lines with their bodies, beautiful shapes and poses which create dynamic imagery. Some recent examples include my features Austin Tacious, Ryan Scott's images in Hung and Mark Gratham's images of Apollo Bird in With The Greatest Of Ease. When I recently spotted an image of the exquisite Diego Serna, posed so beautifully, naked, high in the air, his body wrapped around the ropes of the trapeze, I knew instantly I wanted to feature and share his work.

Image Above from Tim Cofield, make-up by Stephanie Anderson

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Diego now lives and performs primarily in Atlanta An aerialist, actor and dancer, Diego loves the visual arts and especially creating new and interesting works through photography and movement using his skills, body and immense talents. Diego reports his passion for performing began at an early age and at 12 was granted the opportunity to become a member of Young Voices United.

Remaining Images from Jason Meek

Over the next seven years, Diego received theatrical training from Nic Starr (Young Voices United) and Nikki Toombs (Toombstone Productions). Through these experiences he earned various roles such as Chicago in “Is he Dead?”, Lumiere in “Beauty and the Beast”, and Mr. Lindner in both Young Voices United and Nikki Toombs’ rendition of “A Raisin in the Sun”. His talents also earned him the role of Genie in “Las Mil y una Noches” with Latin theatrical company, Teatro Interludio.

At eighteen, Diego says he experienced a sudden, but passionate, interest for aerial arts. With no knowledge on how to get started, he purchased a silk and began learning from videos off of YouTube. (not to be tried at home!) Diego analyzed every move and practiced them in his backyard. After a little less than a year of training, the new and determined aerialist received the honor of performing an aerial opening act for Mexican comedian Adrian Uribe while in Atlanta. This motivated Diego to work even harder and search for professional training.

In 2012, Diego began training at Sky Gym, an aerial and cirque arts studio. His hard work and talent earned him a spot with specialty performance troop Liquid Sky that same year. Upon acceptance into the group, Diego began training in other apparatuses such as lyra, trapeze, fire, and stilts. His talent on stilts landed him the role of the Watcher on a theatrical piece entitled Crossroads. Crossroads is a one of a kind theatrical experience that combines theater and cirque arts created by Rain Anya from Paperdoll Militia.

When deciding he needed great aerial images for his portfolio, Diego did his research in order to find just the right photographers. He needed skilled artists with the experience and talent to capture his aerial skills and movements high in the air. Diego had a concept thought up and planned to shoot with Jason Meek, but while looking up for inspiration for that shoot, came across Mark Grantham's work. Diego loved his images, got in contact and they shot (see post below) prior to the creation of these incredible images he shot with Jason.

'My shoot with Jason was a 21st birthday present to myself. I had a very rough year and this was symbolic to me shedding all that away and coming into a "new skin". Starting fresh!'

Living In A Material World....

I am jeans an t-shirt kind of guy. Except for meeting days at work, I usually dress casually and no little to nothing about clothes making, sewing or material. That didn't stop me from being a bit intrigued when I stumbled upon the image above. In my hunt for great 4th of July material, the above image came up for a listing on e-bay. Further research led me to a Fabric Site where I learned a bit more about it.

The material is Alexander Henry and all of the images here are from their 'retro' collection. My questions was exactly how retro are they? Clearly the appeal would be to gay men not teenage girls but I cannot imagine either, make that anyone, sporting a shirt, dress or spring coat out of any of these patterns. The e-bay listing suggested the material was for a quilt, but unless sewed together for a party or as a joke gift... I was left wondering who would buy them... Purpose aside, I enjoyed stumbling upon them and searching for the many 'hunk' inspired patterns the company thought up.

Schöne Albträume: Do_Mar by Caro von D Fotografie

'Die Fotografie betreibe ich als Hobby und Ausgleich zum Berufsalltag. Fuer mich steht der Spass am Hobby im Vordergrund.'

Readers of FH may remember that I have said I am not usually a fan of images which do not show a models face. I find in many instances, the removal of the face often acts as the removal of the human part of the human being depicted. Without a face, there is also often no soul, which is core for my love of many of my favorite images.

The first image of Do_Mar that I saw was the incredible shot by Caro von D that I used as pic of the day. I was instantly drawn to the incredible body and the location. It didn't hurt Do_Mar was posing entering an incredibly beautiful window. The gas mask covered his face yes, but it some ways it didn't cover his soul. There was a story there, or at least a set of images whose story I wanted to find out more about. Thankfully, the man behind the mask was wonderful to share more shots of his day within the abandoned old house.

Lets start with that house, it reminded me of the many homes I have seen in French horror movies, houses off the beaten path the young leads find themselves trapped in. You could not have created any more horrifyingly beautiful location to shoot the male form. That amazing wood, the old brick and high majestic ceilings. As incredible as Do_Mar looks, my eyes went back and forth from body to the disintegrating beauty of the building which surrounded him. Do-Mar says the home is a huge old manor situated in North/Eastern Germany. The old farmhouse is very difficult to find, surrounded by forests. Any sign of road leading it, to have long been blanketed over by years of growth.

Do_Mar says the biggest challenge of the shoot was acting getting there, and then finding a way to enter the house. The rest, 'No big deal!' The Hamburg model says that Caro was so well prepared that along with his experience, they came together quickly choosing settings and poses once they arrived. After checking out the equipment and lighting, they got started. With the moderate temperature of about 20 degrees, it was not problem spending the day naked posing within the old manor.

'Every photographer has an different eye/view on the model and it is always amazing to see the different results.'
Do-Mar

Do_Mar is extremely comfortable in front of the camera, having modeled for much of the last 20 years. It began with his partner who is a photographer. With a photographer and model as a couple, there were many opportunities to create and try out new idea's together. Do_Mar also loves collaborating with other artists, including the incredibly talented Caro von D. Do_Mar connected with the Hamburg photographer on a German model forum called "Model-Kartei. This was their third shoot together over the past 12 months.

Caro D's career as photographer began two years ago after holding her first digital SLR camera in her hands. She began, like many photographers shooting animals, architecture and landscapes. Pretty soon she moved on models of the human form and it is now an important part of her life. Her idea for this shoot was relatively simple: A naked man in that old house, no portraits, no fashion and no porn. It was the view of photographer and model that covering DO-Mar's face in some shots, especially with the gas mask fit well into the ambience of the old farmhouse. A naked model bares all, but wearing a mask, there retained some private sphere, some distance between model, environment and viewer. I loved this series and the mask, so often covering soul, only adds to soul within this set of images.
