Davo Hardy: 100% Davo

'My comfort for nudity has ultimately made me a comfortable person. Clothes maketh the man, they say. So, I opt to be 100% Davo. Without synthetics or labels. There is nothing more attractive than a confident, smiling and genuinely honest person. I figure being completely comfortable being nude is a ways of helping that attractive person reach their potential, in whatever shape or form it happens to take.'

Most often, when actors discuss nude scenes or love scenes on screen, they feel obliged to remain professional. They discuss the process, how technical it all was and most vocalize how non-sexual it was with all of the crew surrounding standing around. Although I believe this is all true, it doesn't take into account the minds and imagination of all of those involved. I think that is why 'story' is so important to me with FH.

Although most photo shoots may be professional, there is still something fascinating, even titillating about how the process came to be. What made an artist decided to focus on the nude male forum, what made the model decided to pose naked? What factors came into play, how comfortable were with the process, how did their family and friends react, did anything unexpected pop-up during the shoot? These are some of the questions I often wonder when viewing images that I love. Nude photography is a beautiful artistic expression of creativity, but there is also something sensual, risky, and hopefully fun, at it's core.

It is one thing to remove all of one's clothes for a photo shoot with a professional photographer. There may be an assistant or two, but basically it is a small group of professionals within a private studio setting. It is another thing to remove all of one's clothing in a room full of 20, 30 or even more completely clothed individuals, all whose soul focus is to stare down, memorize, then reproduce through art, every inch of your body. I am especially curious when I am introduced to models who spend time working in life drawing and art classes. Unlike others, such as strippers, who removes their clothing for a large group, there is little control over how the process goes, and the model must release control and be completely vulnerable the dozens of eyes viewing, assessing and interpreting what they see.

It was those life class drawings that had me reaching out to ask Davo Hardy a few questions. The Sydney Australia model looked so confident in his classroom posing and I was impressed how in control he looked, dispelling some of my preconceived notions about what it must be like. Davo, a professional film maker, undertook nude modeling as a challenge, viewing it with questions, curiosity and most of all with respect for the others involved. With just a few questions, Davo was able to share the experience from the initial idea, the questions and eventual follow-through. He obviously took to well as in 2010, he wasn't just posing naked for a class room full of artist, he was joining over 5000 others, stripping naked for photographer Spencer Tunick on the stairs of the Sydney Opera House!

'Nude modeling, as a life model, came into play when I was about 16. I had taken to art in high school and was simply looking for an extra curricular activity to occupy those years prior to the senior study, so I was directed to a local art store to purchase my own materials. There, I found the notice board with all the community groups. There were many life drawing groups, but I felt awkward enquiring about them. I was an adolescent boy, asking to join a group where nudity was guaranteed. I had the feeling everyone would be expecting me to be inappropriate or immature about the whole set-up when, in fact, I found it fascinating and was genuinely eager to join. So, of course, I slipped it in between enquiries about ceramics and collages making...'

'When I finally did attend the life drawing group, the very laid back kind where there is no tutor and everyone works at their own pace and with their own material, I was still nervous. I was by far the youngest one there and when the time came to draw the model, I was given a rare opportunity to be that mature young man I wanted the others to see. And so a nude figure became a mass of lines and tone. I made good friends with these retirees and I began to regularly attend the group. Of course, it was mid-week and meant I had to also regularly skip a day of school. The day I, ironically, had two periods of art. Eventually, I failed high school art class, but made up for it in learning practical techniques without the theory and distraction.'

'It was not long before one day the model did not show up and, having always had a quiet interest, I gathered the courage to volunteer. I asked the coordinator quietly and he was shocked, of course, that I was stepping forward. The age of consent is 16 here and though it could not have been any less sexual, it was still a decision to, ultimately expose oneself to dangerous opportunity. As I had become friends with most of the group, they struggled with the prospect too. For lack of a better option, they said it was up to me. So, I took to the centre of the room in my mid-adolescent glory and made my first cash-in-hand wages. This became a regular gig, word of mouth got other groups contacting me and little by little, I built a nice little niche. It was years later that I approached the art schools and private colleges. They hired me quite quickly.'

'There is never an audition process. The educational institutions treat it like any other job interview. They ask for a photo of you (encouraging you to be clothed). I have always submitted a silhouette nude, capturing everything that matters for the job. And when I was 18, I did my first nude photography, soon after joining ModelMayhem. I struggled initially with the repercussions of having publicly accessible nude photography of me on the internet. It has been a decision I have never regretted. One must have a certain personality type for that. The type that is not easily guided by peer pressure or unpopular decision making.'

'I suppose now that there is so much of it out there, people know what to expect of me and when I fit what their needs are, I get the job. Life modeling takes a different set of skills to photography modeling. It's not as glamorous, or as exciting. It's quiet, it's intellectual and it's often straining. The pressure to be frozen in statuesque strength is far greater than the freedom a life model is always given to stretch and break the pose when needed. No one really expects you to stay dead-still for 20 minutes. We are all merely human.'

Below: Davo by Wendy Haigh

'These days, I still model at the same group where it all started, nearly a decade later, some exceptional photography exists, chronicling the last few years of my adolescent development and I have come to feel very comfortable and confident in myself. It would have been so much harder to ignore pressure to be overly thin, muscled or chiselled without the steady compliments and cash rewards for being my raw, naked and honest self in those impressionable years, entering manhood.'

Dave believes that there is a market for everything and that unpopular does not mean unimportant or unworthy. Dave says it was unpopular to be a model without a gym body and toned abs, and he has been accused of being a poor quality model because he allows his body hair to grow as it is intended. The trend to trim and shave one's pubic hair has never appealed to me. Same goes for the hair on my legs. His message is to be yourself, a message he tries to share in both his modeling, and work as a film maker. Be sure to check out some of Davo's film work on his StarNow site HERE:

A naked man had to be rescued after falling into a river while masturbating on a cliff in broad daylight, police claim.

Police attempted to reason with the 31-year-old, who was wanted by police for parole violation. But he continued the sordid sex act in full view of officers... before losing consciousness and falling into the river at 2.17 pm on Saturday, reports New York Daily News.

Robin Williams was more than funny, there are tons of funny people. Robin Williams was to many, the funniest man alive. Able to go places other comedians were not skilled enough to follow. His comedy was smart, spastic and born from an energy that even it's owner did not seem able to contain. As hilarious as Robin could be, on the big screen, scripts could never compare to his comic improvisation skills, and it was drama where he excelled. So many great performances, one of my favorites being his role in The Night Listener. There was always a hint of sadness in his eyes, but he came to live when the audience became his. We shall remain so.

I have posted before over my love of the Hackett Brothers from Wings. (HERE:&HERE:) Steven Weber has been a fixture on television since his time flying in and out of Nantucket. In addition to Wings, Weber has had regular roles on Once & Again, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, TNT's Dallas&Chasing Life.

Single White Female (1992)

Weber is no stranger to nudity, he let it all hang out on stage in the musical Hair. It was still a surprise however to see Weber, 22 years after his naked romp in Single White Female, dropping trou in front of actor Tom Felton in the most recent episode of TNT's Murder In The First. As my thirties wiz by, it becomes more and more impactful seeing actors in their forties, fifties (Weber is 53) and sixty's still smokin up the big and small screen. Thanks to xander7 for the caps, be sure to check out his little male nudity corner HERE:

Inhaled: Caleb by Nathan Scott

I quit about six years ago, but through most of my twenties I loved to smoke. First one in the morning, last one at night, during a brief staff meeting break, around a campfire, after any physical work out, and especially in the car. Although I am glad I quit, I still remember and miss that sensation of inhaling, especially the first one. It was at the same time both relaxing and stimulating, and on some days the climax to a moment.

Smoking, like any other sensory caresser, can affect mood and atmosphere. Although today smoking may be a divisive issue for many, when captured correctly, can create beautiful translucent effects. The blend of Caleb's silky skin against the red material of the couch, his dark hair, black shades and grey smoke, amalgamate for this stunning series of images from photographer Nathan Scott.

Since first featuring Nathan's work this past May, his images have become favorites of both myself and readers of FH. I first featured Nathan's collaboration with Caleb in my July 4th piece Home Of The Brave. It was Caleb's first time in front of camera, but he proved a natural and Nathan captured some incredible images highlighting Caleb's great body, face and beautiful eyes. In that first shoot, Nathan and Caleb experimented with the effects of a ecig, but there were so many shots that I loved, I left them out of the first piece.

When photographer and model recently got together again for another shoot, Caleb wanted to do a shoot with a focus on the smoke. By using a combination of the ecig, and a regular cigarette, they were able to achieve the results they were looking for. The couch was brand new, Nathan's room mate had just brought it in for the living room. Nathan figured there was no better way to break it in than draping the new piece of furniture with a naked Caleb!

'I decided to photograph him nude because I love how lean his body is and it and his butt photograph really well. We ended up creating a story of Caleb waiting for a gig, as if he was a criminal or mobster. He was ready for the score and then kept waiting and got more and more comfortable and started playing with smoke on the couch.'

Nathan describes Caleb as a great guy to work with. Still new to the industry, Nathan remains the only photographer he shot professionally with thus far, but Nathan is confident that is going to change very soon! 'He is always upbeat and a lot of fun on set, willing to try anything I ask of him.' For their recent shoot for the Blue Collar Campaign, Caleb walked on set after literally just having stepped off a plane from a mission trip in Germany.

A Fan

The death this week of Lauren Bacall had me again thinking about how few of her projects I have seen. I was more than aware of the Hollywood legend however, having seen, and heard on tv news and interview shows since I was a kid. From Madonna's Vogue, through her legendary romance with Humphrey Bogart, Bacall was a part of pop culture and a true star.

Like many other actors who have passed away since I started blogging, I was surprised that the only movie of Bacall's I have actually seen is 1981's The Fan. I purchased the DVD a few years ago, mainly due to my love (lust) of actor Michael Biehn. The Fan is really campy and very silly at times (especially those musical numbers) but it is also incredibly watchable and so much fun.

There seemed something even slightly autobiographical about Bacall's character Sally Ross and the rehearsal process she was going through to bet back on Broadway. In addition to Bacall and Biehn, the film also features James Garner, Hector Elizondo and a fun performance from Maureen Stapelton. Bacall is Bacall, grand and slightly over the top and Biehn is hot as hell as the stalker intent on getting her attention.

The Fan is obviously one of Bacall's later movies, but a good one really to start with. I have already placed my Amazon order for three more of her movies (oddly, I chose a couple more of later roles as well) and I hope TCM plans a marathon for both she, and Robin Willimas in the near future. R.I.P Sally Ross, A Fan...

Out Back: Michael Fitt by MiamiPhotoGuy

It is hard to believe that in the last seven years of working on FH, I have never featured fitness model Michael Fitt. I did use one image of Michael, back in 2009 as a pic of the day when I first featured the work of Mark Chin-Sang, the artist behind MiamiPhotoGuy.

Michael is one of the most recognizable faces on the net and has been supporting others with their fitness goals for the last several years. I love this series from Mark and love the feel that it is just Michael hanging out in the backyard and by the pool. Mark always includes a little of Miami's sun and scenery in his shoots Michael looks right at home, hanging out back in his boxer briefs, especially with the late afternoon highlighting his incredible body.

'I met mike for coffee awhile back, for someone with his gorgeous looks and ripped body one would expect a lot of attitude and cockyness, typical of models that look the way he does, he was quite the opposite if fact, so down to earth and modest, he even blushed when I told him how good looking he was, which was refreshing to experience.'

Since that first cup of coffee, Mark has shot Michael many times. Mark reports, that Michael more than lives up to his last name and has worked hard at each of their shoots. Mark reports Michael works a regular job, sometimes putting in 60 to 80 hours a week. In order to keep his body in top shape, Michael also hits the gym six days a week, and his hard work and dedication to fitness can clearly be seen!

'I can say I've been lucky to work with him because he's very selective with who he works with, it's a matter of building trust which we have built over the years. He's driven and is going places and I wish him nothing but the BEST!'

The Boys of Bridgend by Russell Hughes

As August flies by, the smell of fall is already faintly in the air, especially in the early morning. Autumn means a change of color, falling leaves, Thanksgiving and Halloween. And although the temperatures may be cooling off, the calendar season is heating up with the onlaught of naked hunky men waiting to spend the next 12 months with you.

One of the newest entries into the Calendar cartel is The Boys of Bridgend from photographer Russell Hughes. The South Wales photographer recently put together 12 naked guys to raise money for the Everyman appeal to help fight testicular and prostate cancer.

The models that Russell chose to shoot, fit perfectly with the both the theme, and the Everyman charity. The men are not professional models, but tradesmen, builders and citizens Russell found searching Bridgend County, South Wales. I especially love that Russell shot them outside, showing off the beautiful country locations which make perfect surroundings for those Boys of Bridgend.

The goal is to raise £10,000 for the charity through sales and the calendars are ready for shipping worldwide! Copies can be purchased either through the facebook page HERE: or by going direct to our on-line store HERE:

A Layover in Lagos: Joel by Mark Leighton

$

As FH moves into it's eighth year this Autumn, I often wonder what keeps me going week after week to keep posting. The incredible artists stories of the talented men I profile of course, but there is obviously more. Life is not easy for anyone, regardless of one's education, socioeconomic status, job satisfaction, love and family life, no one is immune to health issues, pain and loss. It is the reason we take vacations from work, the reason we day dream, fantasize and the reason we hope.

I like to think of the blog as just that, a visual vacation from what is going on in our lives, a brief reprieve from whatever is bringing us down. Working on the blog is definitely that for me, and I hope for those who pop in each day as well. Every day or two, when I sit down to write, or put together a post the worries of the other 23 hours of my day usually slip away, even if only for a short time. If the blog is not updated every day or two, except for times I am physically away, it is usually during times that I cannot keep the world at bay, but over time, resilience returns, usually because of an image or artist, and I begin again.

When we take real vacations, it is usually to a place we have visualized and imagined many time over. There are some places that once we visit, the desire is quenched, and although pleasant, there is nothing that really pulls at us for a return. There are other destinations we travel to, that leave a piece of them with us, pulling us back over and over again. The same could be said with subjects on the blog. Many artists and models I profile are wonderful to spend a day with, but lingering too long can be risky.

There are other artists however, whose work draws me back time and time again often making return trips, better than the first. You know who those artists are, they are ones I feature on a regular basis, the artist whose work continues to call me back. Mark Leighton is one of those artists. Mark's work not only takes me visually, acting as a tour guide to the breathtaking rocks, sand and oceans along Lagos, Portugal, Mark's work is also beautifully eternal, not rooted in any specific time or era. Using minimal fashion, and the Lagos landscape as his studio, except for a models hairstyle, or maybe a piece of jewelry, Mark's images are timeless.

I can't think of a better visual vacation, than a short, or long, get-a-way with Mark's images of German model Joel. The 19 year old blonde Adonis looks he was born to inhabit a coastline. Joel's lean 6' 1" frame, great face, lips and memorizing blue eyes are a perfect match for the rugged coast, rocks and water than surround him.

Despite his icy good looks, Mark describes Joel as a young man full of fun with a great sense of humour. He is crazy about football, soccer for those of us on in North America, and needless to say, a very happy man a few weeks ago when Germany won the world cup. Joel is also very passionate and ambitious about his modeling career. Joel is currently being seen by agencies and Mark says he would not be surprised if he were represented by the time I post this piece.

'As a photographer, I really enjoy working with models that want to connect with the camera and not just look good for it. Joel was exceptional in this regard, really engaging the viewer with his brilliant green/blue eyes and he was one of the most natural "performers" for the camera I have worked with.'

'Joel is naturally a very good looking young man and turns heads wherever he goes. Personally I also like that he has long hair, as there are not so many models around these days that have that style. It works particularly well on beach location shots, taking movement from the wind and also when coming out of the Ocean, dripping water onto his torso. I am hoping to shoot Joel again in the coming months, so hopefully there will be some more of him to see before the end of the year.'

The Twists & The Turns

Big Brother is a wonderful, living and breathing example of how you can't judge a book by it's cover. Many of us, FH included, began the season, not knowing any of the contestants by judging the male eye candy strictly by the visual. But as it happens most years, by August, I dislike most of them, something that is almost inevitable, having one's habits, good and bad, on display 24/7 for all to see.

Zankie was cute, for about six seconds, until the real Frankie Grande oozed his way out of the fun and cute body he inhabits. I still like Zach, but Frankie has become intolerable, so ego driven and annoying, I cringe whenever he is on screen. Most of the others have shown that their outward appearance is the best thing they have going for them. From Beast mode stalking through constant nasal snorting, some of the hottest are easier to enjoy in pictures, than in real life. There a few exceptions,

Hayden

I still love me some Hayden, who to me, was the most likeable of the bunch. Derrick has remained the most consistent, playing the game so quietly, no one, (except Donny) sees it really until they are out of the house. Donny on the other hand, has been the one to me, who has managed to increase his appeal. I hated his fake country schtick until realizing there was nothing fake about it all.

As most of the rest of the hunky men in the house lost some of their lluster, Donny has gained it. His kindness and ability to motivate himself to wins, even when completely without support, have made him a true favorite. Oh sure, we all may want to spend a night (or a half hour) with some of the others, but thinking of spending any length of time with them would be have me wanting to self evict!

Just Because: TV's Incredible Hunks

34 years ago, in August of 1980, Tom Wopat, Erik Estrada and Greg Evigan led TV Guide's list of incredible hunks. If the magazine chose to replicate this theme today, I am not sure who would make the list. The television landscape is so different today with hundreds of channels beyond the big three vying for the little time, and minimal attention, most of us give to watching TV today. I don't know who would make the long list, but I suspect the cover might possibly include; Alexander Skarsgård, Taylor Kinney and Stephen Amell but the choices today are endless.
