Tension & Strain: Chris Topel by LightWeaver

'It is always by way of pain one arrives at pleasure.'
Marquis de Sade

Last Sunday I introduced FH readers to Jay Rickard's (LightWeaver) latest work with model Chris Topel. (Have A Seat) The wooden stool Chris was sitting on, so central to that first set of images, takes on different feel and degree of risk in the second part of the series. Although they had not worked together in awhile, when Jay purchased some interesting props off E-bay, he wanted to created one of his character's based around them. Jay remembered that Chris loved the macabre and darker themes as well, so he immediately came to mind to bring to life the concepts spinning around in the artists imagination.

As regular viewers of FH know, my tastes often run towards what some might consider rather the tame side. I have been enjoying however, challenging my own boundaries from time to time and one of my challenges has been when the theme of bondage arises within a set of images. I sort of know why...I mayve have a connection to my feelings about choice and control, but I have come to realize that is my own misconception and assumptions about the practice.

Some of my favorite pieces over the last few years to put together, have ended up including bondage as a central component. There are just certain emotions, and levels of raw vulnerability that have been beautifully translated through not the loss, but the giving up, of control. It wasn't the first time Jay has used this theme within his work, but he does think it was the first time it became this dark.

'I've used light bondage in shoots before but Chris really took it to another level by giving it the pain and pleasure element using tension, body language and facial expressions. He approached it from an acting perspective, which is really what a photographer wants from a model no matter what the tone or goal of the shoot.'

'The wonderful thing about working with a model multiple times is that you build a rapport and the trust increases. So when we were planning the shoot and I ran the concept by him he immediately was on board. He knew he could trust me and that everything would be above board even though he'd be in a position of vulnerability. You don't meet a model for your first shoot and put him in that position right off the bat. At least I would never dream of it. The trust isn't there yet and I believe you'll see that in the images. So he took the elements I threw at him and he ran with it with gusto.'

Sometimes when I am searching for images for the blog I really pray I don't die in some sudden accident that leaves my computer in the hands of my parents. Actors on the Toilet isn't really a phrase I want remembered long after I am gone...

Kevin Zegers

Story and post idea's sometimes sort of just come up while on the searching for something else. I didn't do a birthday post for September 19th, but when I thought I may post on that day, I started looking images. I chose the beautiful and talented Kevin Zegers, who turned 30 that day as the actor whose image I would use for the birthday post. While searching, the image of above of Kevin on the can was near the top of the page.

James Franco

Although I loved the fun and creativity of the classic image (shown further down below) of Jude Law on the throne, with Ewan McGregor beside him on the tub, I have not usually found actors on the toilet an especially appealing subject for a blog theme or photographic image for that matter. Except of course, when you have a talented artist behind the lens, any theme can really be done well. After an exhaustive (and not always so pleasant) search, these were some of my favorites featuring the theme.

Josh Hartnett

Donald Faison

Gael García Bernal

Jérémy Kapone

Alex Pettyfer

Ewan McGregor & Jude Law

Alexander Skarsgård

Paul Rudd, Wanderlust

Actors on the can isn't a theme only explored within photography. Many films include comedic, and not so comedic scenes of actor on the loo. Last year, Zac Efron's naked toilet scene was capped and spread all over the Internet. Paul Rudd has hit the can in at least two movies, and in horror movies, taking a dump is a sure fire way to ensure that you're the next one to be decapitated. Freddy and Jason know when your at your most vulnerable!

Temptation by Matt Lee

'There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable.'
Mark Twain

'The apple has long represented many things in religion, fables and mythology. A symbolism of temptation, desire and downfall, whether it be the apple featured in Genesis or the apple featured in Snow White. It's this concept of desire and seduction I've sought to capture in this shoot with Archie.'

Apple, the forbidden fruit... As soon as you label something with the word forbidden, you're already in trouble. Anything, as Mark Twain wisely says, labelled forbidden, instantly becomes more interesting, more desirable and that much more tempting. You can literally feel the temptation in this new series from London photographer Matt Lee. Matt captures Archie in full temptation mode, luring us in with his juicy and ripe piece of fruit.

I love the trajectory on Archie's face that Matt captures. Initially a little coy, even shy with the apple at his side. As his arm rises, Archie teases us with his goods, becoming more confident, even cocky, smirking at our inability to resist. By the last image, Archie knows he has won. We have caved and you can see it on the satisfied look on Archie's face.

I first featured Matt Lee's work on the blog last spring with A Strange Place. The first day of Autumn is a perfect time for this new series because as well as a symbol of temptation and desire, Apple's are also a symbol of fall. In many parts of the world, Apples are ready to be picked, eaten and enjoyed between mid to late September through the end of October. Matt shares that Archie is both a model and photographer himself, which made him wonderfully easy to work with given his understanding of how to get the best from a shoot. I love the concept that Matt achieved here, weaving the almost Gothic and mystical elements that have become some of my favorite parts of Matt's imagery.

Last week FOX wisely unveiled it's new series Red Band Society a week before things got busy with premiere week. A fan of Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable and Wilson Cruz, I had planned to watch the series, but was out during's it's airing. FOX repeated the pilot later in week which thankfully I remembered to DVR.

The entire company is full of likable and talented young actors, but a stand out to me was actor Charlie Rowe. Charlie plays Lee Roth, the cancer survivor who leads the group of unlikely friends brought together by their commonalities and circumstance. The show had me from the first scene. Yes, it pulls at your heart strings, but with intelligence and wit. If you feel for the characters, it was not just because the writers gave them a challenge, but because the characters were so well written and performed.

Charlie hails from Islington, London, England and has been acting much of his 18 years. Some of you may remember him from his turns in The Golden Compass, Walking With Dinosaurs and the Neverland Mini-Series. Charlie shaved his head for the role and he transforms into a realistic, believable and likable anti-hero.

I suspect a long life for this hospital drama, I just hope the producers have a plan for it's teen cast. So many series beginning with a young cast end up throwing away the magic far too quickly. I remember how incredible the pilot for Glee was, smart, witty and so well written. Glee today seems so far removed from that great pilot that is sprang from. Executive Producer Steven Spielberg hasn't had the best luck with television shows the last few years, (Extant...) but hopefully Red Band Society breaks that trend!

Big Brother comes to an end this Wednesday and I am not sure that anyone could have predicted the final three when the season first began. Yes, Derrick might have been on many people's lists, but I am not sure Cody or Victoria were. I have enjoyed Derrick's game, it was not as flashy as Dr. Will's or as dramatic as Dan's but it was effective and did the trick. He brought both Cody and Victoria to the end as he felt they both would be loyal, and easier to manipulate than the rest of the house. In a season that often seemed like The Frankie Show, and I was no fan of that particular series... Cody has turned out to be a surprisingly effective player.

Cody is near the bottom of most popularity polls but I have grown to like him, above and beyond just his good looks. Although he was prone to mouthing off on what he was going to do, and who he was going to tell of, he smartly kept these rants in private, moving throughout the game in a generally non-threatening and likable fashion. He won comps when he needed to, cut ties to ally's when he needed to, and except for maybe Hayden, remained fairly popular with the others. He certainly bashed others, it is Big Brother, but not generally in a cruel or vindictive way. In fact, Cody quietly was usually the one taking the high road during bash sessions, walking away or commenting that the comments were going to far. Derrick will get the lions share of the credit at the finale, and so he should. Derrick's road to the end however would not have been possible without his right hand man, and Cody made a might fine one.

Welcome Autumn!

As much as Tom is trying, he can't hold back the Fall!  The summer is officially over as September 23rd marks the first day of Autumn.  Despite how adorable he looks in them, it is time to put away the shorts, flip flops and tank tops... at least when going outside in the cold!

Body & Spirit: Andre by Bob Burkhardt

'I was impressed by Andre's striking features, lean physique and ability to express himself through his body.'

Atlanta artist Bob Burkhardt clearly understands how to capture incredible bodies. It is however that expression of self which Bob referenced, that has me continually drawn back to his imagery. In each of the pieces that I have done featuring his work, (which you can see HERE:) Bob manages to not just capture body and movement, he captures the movement of spirit and soul. An energy not seen, but felt literally soaring from the men in front of his lens.

That energy which Bob tapped into with Andre Avery, and the resulting photos from the shoot, were actually featured two years at the artist's pb&j gallery in Atlanta. The exhibition, Body & Soul took place in February of 2011 and you can see some of the images from the exhibit HERE:

To capture a subjects spirit, or soul, means looking beyond what is seen only on the surface, the physical, the body and it's parts and looking even deeper, and even beyond, what is visible through the lens. Spirit is something more felt than seen. If you spend time with at the image at the top which introduces this piece, there is more of Andre felt, even behind the covering of the blind, than in some of the images in which he is more physically exposed.

What is unseen of course, must somehow be translated through the lens and the resulting images. For Bob Burkhardt, this occurs through the locations and set ups he uses, lighting of course and incredible pose and body positioning. I also find the way Bob's model use their faces and eyes fascinating. So many images of the male form seem to use the eyes to help draw the viewer into the image and closer to the body and the parts the photographer wants you to focus on. With Bob's images, his models eyes almost seem to be creating distance, keeping the viewer from coming in too close. This works beautifully to keep the eye on the entire image as a whole in order to fully absorb both the spirit and the full range of body position and movement.

Andre Avery is singer, dancer, actor and model and has been modeling since he was just 14 year old. Andre says what he enjoys most about modeling is the response of the public when on the runway which provides him the energy to ignite in front of the camera. 14 was also the year Andre began taking his other passion of singing seriously and began his professional training in voice.

As with his modeling, it was the pleasure Andre derived from the reaction he received during a performance that brings him the most satisfaction as a performer. Andrew is self-taught in dance and also enjoys acting and concentrates on each of his four talents with an eye to that break which will help turn all of his hard work and dreams into a reality!

Since their first shoot in 2011, Andre took a bit of a break from modeling, but he and Bob got back together and worked together again this past year. Bob shares that the results of their recent shoot will be featured in our upcoming show, NINE: Lens Masters. which opens Oct. 18. The exhibition showcases nine talented photographers spanning a diverse field of specialities and subject matter. Additionally Bob says that his work with Andrew will be prominently featured in my upcoming book "Body&Soul."

'It was probably a dare, there are a lot of end of footy season parties happening at the minute, or he just likes to get naked,'

'Shoppers got more than they bargained for when a man decided to take a casual stroll through a shopping centre - completely naked.   The man, wearing nothing but his birthday suit, was spotted walking through Casuarina Square in Darwin, in the Northern Territory on Saturday afternoon.  Onlookers definitely got an eye full and found it rather hilarious.'

Favorite Hour Of TV This Week: How To Get Away With Murder

$

There are very few shows I watch live, DVR is my usual viewing choice so I can flip through the commercials. I did make an exception last night to watch, and thoroughly enjoy ABC's How To Get Away With Murder. The show grabbed me from the first few minutes and held my interest til the cliffhanger ending. The show weaved together three different mysteries, only one solved by the end of the first 60 minutes.

The cast, led by Viola Davis and Alfred Enoch was stellar and the eye candy, (as you can see below) varied and more than worthy. It is also great to see Tom Verica and Liza Weil (Paris bitches!) back on television. The show got a lot of press this week due to a writer from the NY Times, and part of me wishes executive producer Shonda Rhimes would have ignored it. She, and the show, are above it and her shows stars only brought attention to the article and it's writer. I guess, with three hours of Thursday programming, the promotion it garnered was too good to pass up. How To Get Away With Murder didn't really need it, it pulled in an impressive 14 million viewers, out rankings the two other Rhimes shows that preceded it on Thursday.

Alfred Enoch

Alfred Enoch, known to many for his role in the Harry Potter series is a perfect actor to anchor the actors playing the students around. Talented, smart, vulnerable and incredibly sexy, I suspect Alfred's Wes Gibbons is in store for a pretty bumpy ride.

Alfred in Sherlock

Billy Brown

Billy Brown has been busy the last few years on Sons of Anarchy, The Following, Dexter and Hostages. With all those roles, not sure I have seem him look as hot as in his boxer briefs in his first scene from Murder (below) last night.

Jack Falahee

First off, don't you just love Jack Falahee's name! Jack plays Connor Walsh and had Murders hottest sex scene of the pilot. What made the scene so great wasn't just it's pushing the envelope with it's hottness, it was also great seeing Connor doing what he could, and who he could, to get the information he needed to impress his professor.

Matt McGorry

I love me some Matt McGorry. Matt didn't get a ton of screen time last night, but hopefully Asher will get some interesting story lines as the season goes on. Check out my previous post on Matt HERE:

Matt in Orange Is The New Black

Charlie Weber

I first crushed over Charlie Weber when he played Ben on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Ben was the human body for Hell Goddess Glory and although Glory ultimately took over, Ben certainly made an impact!

Gray Ions: Rocks Of Ages

'Been taking photos since I can remember....'

When I think of some of my favorite images, location has always been central. But when I think of the artists and places I have featured; the armoury's, old bank vaults, abandoned homes and building, the mine shafts and long forgotten farms and bars there is one through line they all have, change. Almost everything on earth has a similar life cycle, creation, life and then death. The life of a person, or a location also has it's own cycle from new and vibrant to old and withered, the artists I most admire, see the beauty in the latter.

There is little on this planet that does not change at lightening speed. Rocks however probably have one of the slower change cycles and the changes that do occur are usually connected to external factors like human's and the elements that eventually wear down their tough exterior. It is interesting that when I put together a story on the blog about most locations, I am usually caught up in what those places once looked like. When working with these images from photographer Gray Ions, I was struck by how small the changes would have been over the years, decades and even centuries.

There would have of course been changes in the vegetation, but for the most part, the rocks, ocean and sky have remained a stable location and backdrop for countless men and women whose life spans have passed through them. Gray's theme of 'figures on rocks' beautifully contrasts skin with stone and I love the textures and colors Gray Gray creates. Each of these images have been taken around a very small area in Gray's home in Cape Town. Making use of the amazing granite rock formations and using Table Mountain as a backdrop, Gray says the location brings on complete calmness and complete peace when shooting on the rocks.

Gray estimates he has done about 100 shoots on and around the rocks and the location makes it a draw for the models he works with. Gray has recruited models from his beautiful city of Cape Town but has shot incredible men on the rocks from Canada, Australia and Europe. About 90% of the models Gray has shot there have never posed before but once they see the location and Gray's imagery, most want to share in the experience, and many have done multiple shoots atop the rocks.

Gray titled his site Alpha-boy, which Gray describes as a shy creature, seldom found out at night and never in crowds. Although normally shy, Gray says when shooting, especially on the beach or upon the rocks, he finds himself at ease.  This relaxation usually causes the artist to become more talkative than he normally would be. .

Gray says his talking helps relax many of the models as he doesn't want to direct them but instead prefers them to move as the please. Gray moves with and around them, sometimes working from 360 degree angles taking in as much of the model, and all that surrounds him, as he can. Gray conducts most of his shoots about an hour before sunset, shooting as the sun beautifully sinks into the Atlantic.

I work a lot with the shapes and textures of the rocks…. and the late afternoon light. The time of day, light is always different…. and visually exciting. With Table Mountain as a backdrop, the clouds sometimes fall down the mountain, and change colours as they planet down the mountain.'

Gray has taking photos since he was a child and has always been his passion. His background his academic, studied photography and lectured on the subject for 11 years. Currently Gray works as a freelance photographer shooting a spectrum from portraits to porn and everything in between. Male nudes and travel photography are what he truly loves and as you can see from these images, Gray loves working outside utilizing natural life. 'I feel so alive when the' gods of light' play along with me and for a second the light is perfect. The clouds dance in the sky for me and I feel the energy of the moment.'
