Seconds Of Shea by Carl Proctor

'Working with Carl Proctor was awesome! He creates beautiful images and is definitely one of the best photographers I've worked with yet. I would work with him again any time!'

Last Sunday I introduced FH readers to Carl Proctor's outstanding imagery of Shea. The first set of images (Making History) were incredible and knew that everyone would have an appetite for some seconds of Shea.

Shea has such a strong raw and masculine presence in front of the lens and I especially felt it in this series of images from Carl featuring Shea in, and out of, his military fatigues. Shea is all business, serious and stern channelling both a little Louis Gossett Jr. and a little Richard Gere. An officer yes, but not always a gentlemen.

12 Days: Joel McHale in A Merry Friggin' Christmas

Every year at this time television stations haul out their holiday movies. Problem is, most of them we have seen before. Now there are some movies like Miracle on 34th Street you can pull out every season, but I am getting a little tired of the countless replays of The Santa Clause, Elf and Home Alone. Don't get me wrong, they're all ok flicks but sometimes in order to really enjoy them you need to take a Christmas off from the same ole same ole. Between now and the end of the month, in 12 Days, I am going to feature movies you may not have seen, and of course the hunks who star in them. Hopefully there will be at least one movie, and one actor, that might bring a little joy to your holidays.

To be honest, last years A Merry Friggin' Christmas isn't exactly joyful. Not only is it one of Robin William's last film roles, it is also rather dark, if not honest, about what family gatherings are really like. The film is a mixed bag saved by a few well written and acted scenes by Williams, Candice Bergen, Lauren Graham, Oliver Platt and Wendi McLendon-Covey. It also stars the very enjoyable Joel McHale (12).

I have always thought Joel was adorable, yet since I do n't watch Community, I believe this Christmas movie is the first time I have actually seen a movie or tv show he has been in. Under those suits he often wears, McHale is incredibly fit, clearly spending more than a few hours at the gym the last year or two. He really kept me watching the film as I felt his strong desire to not replicate the mistakes of his own father (Williams) especially at Christmas.

Love the shot below by renowned celebrity photographer Timothy White

I recommend checking out this movie, but remember it is not full of fa la la la la's. The Mitchler family have their issues, and might be to close to what some of our families are truly like to actually enjoy. The relationship between Williams and Bergen in particular is hard to watch, but again, because I have seen it play out many times in my real life. Like most holiday movies, it does end on a nice note, maybe too nice actually as it sort of changes tone a little abruptly the end in order to tie the film up with a holiday bow.

Late to the party as usual, it was just last Friday night that I finally saw Frozen. With the theme song already over played and over sang, I had sort of lost interest. My choice for movie night was sort of irrelevant however, as with my nieces visiting for the weekend, Frozen it would be, and it would be, three times, twice more on Saturday.

I did indeed love it, getting as caught up in the actions as the two little girls cuddled beside me. I thanked them for finally getting me to watch, but left out one of the main things I enjoyed. Like many of you I would guess, I developed yet another toon crush, this time on the dopey sexy combo that was Kristoff Bjorgman.

Kristoff and his reindeer Sven were my two favorite characters to watch and it didn't hurt knowing Kristoff was voiced by another crush, this one alive and not just digitally created. I love me some Jonathan Groff, and only wished they had given him a bit more to sing. Due to those frigid temperatures, and the fact Kristoff made his as an ice harvester, the character was usually bundled up pretty tightly, usually in full winter gear!

Knowing however, from seeing Mr. Groff take it all off on Boss, Looking and Twelve Thirty, it was easy to fantasize how great Kristoff must have looked under all of that material and fur lining. It is clear Kristoff cast a spell on many as when doing a search for this piece, tumblr's and DeviantArt were full of talented artists who have created various themes and scenario's in which to place a completely naked Kristoff. I included a couple of PG shots below, but you can see more with a simple google.

Up On The Roof: Elijah by Ryan Edward Scott

'Ryan Edward Scott is a San Francisco based photographer whose work explores private moments made public and the sensual nature of male vulnerability.'

Since first discovering the work of artist Ryan Edward Scott in 2010, I have been continually impressed at his skill and creativity with obtaining his visual objectives. Whether hanging over a flight of stairs, hanging high atop an old barn, or perched high up on a roof, Ryan always manages to capture the vulnerability within his subjects both literally and emotionally.

What I find most interesting about this series of Elijah is that the vulnerability seems most intensely present, not when he is outside, in full public view as he straddles the roof to in just jock strap. Elijah seems at his most vulnerable when in the attic looking out of that window before he climbs through and out.

This may be in part because the attic acts as Elijah's entry to the outside. It is the place he has to decided whether he is actually going to strip down and take the risk of climbing through the window and ascending up on to the roof. Sometimes we are at our most vulnerable just before taking risks, it is the time when our anxiety is at it's peek and our adrenaline is racing.

Once Elijah is actually on the roof you can almost feel a sense of freedom takes over. Initially you can see the nerves, but slowly, as he finds his footing and his body begins flow into movement and acclimatize itself to it's surroundings you can see some beautiful changes. I think the biggest change is Elijah turning from the one being watched, the 'almost naked' man on a roof top to the watcher, the man now at top, able to see all that surrounds him below.

12 Days: Andrew W. Walker in A Bride For Christmas

Every year at this time television stations haul out their holiday movies. Problem is, most of them we have seen before. Now there are some movies like Miracle on 34th Street you can pull out every season, but I am getting a little tired of the countless replays of The Santa Clause, Elf and Home Alone. Ok, to be honest, I did not actually make my way through A Bride For Christmas in it's entirety. Not because I wasn't interested, but because my DVR cut off most of the second half of the movie. I recorded the film because it's male lead was Andrew W. Walker (#11), an actor whose career I have been following since first posting about him in a Birthday piece back in 2008.

The Montreal born actor has eyes and face made for close ups, and regardless of what his dialogue is, directors are wise to feature and linger on close-ups of the actor and that incredible face! Andrew has been a fixture on American and Canadian television (and movies) since the early 90's. Andrew has made appearances on shows from E.R, NYPD Blue, The Big Bang Theory, Reba, Sabrina The Teenage Witch and a couple of the CSI's.

Andrew makes the perfect lead for a Lifetime holiday film, and A Bride For Christmas wasn't his only one. Andrew also appears in Finding Mrs. Clause, another flick I think is playing this week. If you scroll down however, enjoying staring into Andrew's eyes, and maybe a bit lower, you can clearly see that although Lifetime movies are fine, that face belongs on the big screen.

Sadly three shows I am currently enjoying are not on the verge of hitting big, but instead on the verge of cancellation. If you don't watch The Comeback, The MCarthys or Red Band Society, I strongly recommend you give them a shot while they still grace the airwaves.

Technically The Comeback cannot really be cancelled, HBO brought it back for only a limited number of episodes, so if they decide to cancel, they simply won't ask for more. I admit, the first episode of season 2 had me worried. It took the writers, the amazing Lisa Kudrow and her character Valerie a few scenes to get their rhythm back, but it's back baby! To me, The Comeback is the best sit-com on television, maybe ever. Watching Valerie (and Kudrow) maneuver through an improve class, balancing her lack of talent, the camera crew, her ego and Mickey's news was amazing television. Valerie weaves hilarity with heartbreak, pain and confusion better than anyone who has graced the tube. I often wonder why more people aren't flocking to this show.

Unlike The Comeback, The McCarthy's is not great television, not yet anyway. It does have the potential however. I don't love the show yet, but I like it enough to have invested and hope it continues. I love that Tyler Ritter's Ronny struggles in life, not because of his sexuality, but like the rest of his family, because of the family he grew up in. The show has plenty of laughs, but to me has been playing it far too safe, restraining it's talent, especially the brilliant Laurie Metcalf. Her Marjorie is being written as far to quiet, far too restrained. Metcalf blew the roof off of almost every scene they gave her on Roseanne as Jackie had far more energy to build from. If The McCarthys continues, I would suggest switching up and untying the ropes from Metcalf's character and let her show everything she is capable of.

I loved Red Band Society from the get go, and developed a wee crush on actor Charlie Rowe (whom I featured HERE:). After a promising pilot however, the show slowed down it's pace, causing me to lose a bit of interest in it's subsequent episodes. The show got it's mojo back the past few weeks, in large part with a focus on the relationship between Nurse Andrew and Dr. Jack (Octavia Spencer and Dave Annable). There has also been further development of the kids and their families and thankfully more scenes with the wonderful Wilson Cruz! I hope FOX has a change of heart and orders more of this show. Red Band Society has become a nice change of pace from adrenaline driven dramas currently all over the tube. Sometimes it is nice to sit back and spend time with characters you enjoy without worrying their FBI, back from the dead, killer father could blow up the hospital with a bomb after every commercial.

12 Days: Charlie Carrick in Holidaze

#10 Charlie Carrick

Although it is Cameron Mathison and Jennie Garth who star, neither had me wanting to finish the 2013 ABC Family flick Holidaze. Thankfully, I got to turn it off after about 15 minutes, after Garth's one night stand with the sizzling Charlie Carrick.

Some actors just have that 'it factor' that have you wanting to see more, and Canadian based actor Carrick has it. Both Garth and Mathison are likeable enough, but neither really has enough spark to hold an audiences attention for an entire movie, both over act just enough not to be believable. Carrick may only have had a couple of scenes, but those were enough to have me searching out more of his work.

'Growing up in Newcastle, England, he felt insecure while attending the prestigious all-boys Royal Grammar School, "a big huge stone building with huge portraits of guys in funny wigs kind of thing," he said. "When I was 16, I just wanted to be less self-conscious, so I was very envious of kids who were not self-conscious." Theatre, books and films were always important to him, though, and eventually he got into acting. Carrick came to live in Canada because his mother was born in Montreal and he found it an appealing country in which to live and build his acting career.'

Blood Bath: Stefan Braydon by gentlemenONLY

'Through my shoots I open up a little window into the lives of these 'every day' gentlemen so we can take an intimate peek beneath the clothes and under the skin of each man, seeing them in a way very few people have done before. As the surface veneer is stripped away I aim reveal each gentlemen’s hopes, fears, thoughts and feelings on things going on in their lives at the moment of the shoot.'

I am pleased to be able to feature my third gentlemen from photographer Octo from gentlemenONLY, this time with English model Stefan Braydon. I first contacted Stefan last year after coming across his images on Model Mayhem. Stefan has a great body and presence in front of the camera, but I was especially taken with his beautiful blue eyes and face that weaves a classic GQ look with an incredibly sexy edge. Stefan noticed I had featured Octo's work in the past and it was him who suggested focusing on their work together.

Stefan began modeling a few years ago, but stopped after a bad experience on a shoot. His girlfriend at the time encouraged him to give it another try and acted as his stylist during his first shoot with Octo. A professional actor, Stefan has appeared in a number of productions from Rent to a touring production of The Full Monty. If you haven't already noticed, Stefan is often compared to another actor, one also not shy to share both his talent, and his body on the big screen. Many people have commented on Stefan's resemblance to the incredible Michael Fassbender.

'Stefan is very confident with his body and nakedness and being an actor he's always looking to push his boundaries.'

'Stefan and Marie know each other from working together on various acting projects. Marie was very similar to Stefan in her approach to nudity and pushing boundaries. Working in the creative industry you have to be prepared for all sorts of experiences in the name of art, so Marie had no issues with doing a photo shoot with a naked man, even if that naked man just so happened to be her friend.'

'I've worked with Octo on three occasions. I always enjoy working with Octo - he is always friendly and polite and I feel totally at ease during the photo shoots. His work is great!
Stefan Braydon

'At one of his previous shoots Stefan had mentioned that his favourite TV show was True Blood and I said that I would create an image of him as homage to the show (last image below). Whilst I was taking some pictures to create that image, Stefan starting messing about in the bathroom and I thought this was a bit of fun and snapped away as Stefan started stripping off. These images were completely random and spontaneous but I thought why not share them as bit of behind the scenes fun!'

'I love the the TV series and had a dream that one day I could appear in it (shame it's finished). I've been compared to Jason Stackhouse and Sam Merlotte in the past. However I wanted to play the part of a human who gets turned into a vampire.'

The images for this piece come from each of the three of Stefan's shoots with Octo. They are but a small sample of the work they have done together and you can see more, much more of Stefan on gentlemenOnly!

Kyle Anderson: An Artist, An Animator & A Gentleman

$

'Spending 14 years of my life in a pool wearing nothing but speedos all day has definitely made me comfortable with a lack of clothing. Plus I have a bit of an exhibitionist side to me, so it's all felt pretty natural, it was never a huge deal for me.'

With the theme of FH being the male form, my first encounter with many of the men I profile is of them without many, and often any, clothes on. Visually, they are physically exposed in front of the camera, yet even completely naked, most remain concealed. We may see their bodies, but we know nothing of their lives unless of course they make the choice to share. My goal with FH is in many ways to get to know them dressed. To find out who they are and what makes them tick, especially artistically. My main question is usually what led them, what brought them to the image that first drew me to want to get to know more about them.

There are great looking naked men all over the Internet but almost all, are just that, bodies in images that are seen, enjoyed, and then quickly forgotten. Others linger though, in your thoughts and in your memory. It might be the artistry within the image, it might be a look in their eyes, it might be the talent and skill of the person behind the camera lens. Some, are most comfortable with only having their bodies exposed. Happy to share images, but reluctant, for their own reasons to expose much beyond that.

Some models, like Kyle Anderson are comfortable sharing more. When I saw my first image of Kyle, he was indeed fully nude in a incredible image (below by Joseph Sbarro) that had me wanting to find out more about him. There was a confidence exuding from the man within that image, a strength felt within both the relaxation of his pose and his connection with the camera. Kyle appeared to me more than posing for, but was interacting with camera, staring confidently and directly at the lens, and the person behind it. Being an artist himself might account for some of this, but I think his years swimming may have had an even bigger impact.

5 images above by Joseph Sbarro

Kyle Anderson:
Animator: Worked on preschool TV shows such as The Wonder Pets, 3rd & Bird, Small Potatoes, Peg + Cat, Sing It, Laurie!, and Team Umizoomi.
Artist: Writer and illustrator of the Captain Tremendous graphic novel and Museum of Monsters poetry collection.
Gentleman: Gives up his seat on the train for the pregnant and elderly.

From Kyle's Site:
Growing up in California, Kyle spent most of his time in the pool on the local swim team. During the long tedious workouts, swimming back and forth, he had big dreams of becoming an archaeologist... or a mortician, but after realizing archaeology was NOT like Indiana Jones, and that life as a mortician would not be an episode of Six Feet Under, he decided to go into film making. So off he ran to New York University, where he studied Film and Television production at Tisch School of the Arts. It was here he learned how much he appreciated California winters and, after being on swim team all four years, how much he missed outdoor swimming pools.

He was given an internship on Davey and Goliath's Snowboarding Christmas which inspired him to become an animator and sparked his love of stop motion. After that, he began his focus on animation with the guiding hand of Academy Award winning professor, John Canemaker, where he spent 3 years hunched over a lightbox and locked in a small, dark stop motion set. Kyle then moved out into the world where he has animated on the preschool television shows, "The Wonder Pets,""3rd & Bird,""Small Potatoes,""Sing It Laurie!" and "Team Umizoomi" for the past 7 years, as well as working on the pilot episodes for "Peg + Cat,""The Jo B. & G. Raff Show," and a Domo special. He has also been given the opportunity to direct episodes of "The Wonder Pets" and "Sing It Laurie!" Kyle is still located in New York City, is still cold, and has begrudingly taken up running. He is currently working as a freelance animator.

2 images above from René Fragoso

Even when on a team, even though a couch, swimming is a solitary sport. All those hours swimming laps in the pool, often alone gave Kyle as mentioned, lots of time to think. Too much alone time can be risky, some minds use the lack of time limits to form reasons not to move forward. Other minds, especially those attached to bodies in motion, use that same time to plan, to figure out ways to overcome obstacles, get around boundaries and to prepare for what is coming.

Inspirations:

I think that one of my biggest inspirations is an artist that goes by the name of Shag. His work has a very kitschy, retro vibe to it, which I love. And most importantly it's just a lot of fun. It's artwork that is shown in legitimate galleries, sells for a ton of money, but doesn't take itself too seriously. As far as animation goes, my biggest inspiration would be Gumby. After my first year of film school, I was at home in California for the summer (a small town on the coast called San Luis Obispo) and ended up getting connected with a production of a Davey and Goliath Christmas special that the creators of Gumby were making. It ended up being such an amazing experience that when I returned to school that fall, I decided to switch from live action to animation and never looked back. I also cannot forget John Canemaker (an academy award winner for best short animation) who was my teacher at NYU. It was amazing to not only get his advice on my work and career path, but also have him really believe in me.

So much of animation, even targeted at adults seems about connection to childhood memories. Holidays, fun, even colors that often people forget. It seems some people try to block those memories, or see them as unimportant, and others try to tap into them to help make sense of their current lives. I was curious as to if this philosophy in any way impacted Kyle's work process, or was it something completely different?

KA: As far as my personal work goes and what I decide to make, I think a lot of those decisions are based entirely on what I would like to see. I feel like as a kid, I sort of forced myself to grow up sooner than I wanted to try and fit in. There's a point where watching cartoons and making crazy invented stories with action figures isn't the cool thing to anymore, so I stopped. And then in college, especially being in the animation field, I realized that no one cared anymore. So yeah, I think a big part of my work is trying to tap back into childhood that I felt was cut short.

The Birthday Party

The Birthday Party from Kyle Anderson on Vimeo.

'Marc was my boyfriend at the time and being in a long distance relationship, I wanted to do something special for him since I couldn't actually be there. The initial idea was just going to be essentially just like a simple gif, ecard sort of thing, but i have a tendency to make projects a lot bigger than they have to be, and next thing I know I had basically storyboarded an entire film out. Fortunately at the time I was unemployed, so I managed (without much sleep) to finish the entire thing in about a week's time, which given that on an actual production, we are usually only expected to get through about 45 seconds a week (and that's just animation, not including storyboarding, design, rigging, sound, etc.) it was a pretty insane feat. The biggest reason for no sound was I just didn't have the time or actors to record dialogue. Nor did I have the equipment necessary to get the level of quality I wanted and I can be a bit of a perfectionist. If I am going to put that much work into a project, then it needs to good, otherwise what's the point? So with that in mind, I came up with the old film concept as a way to be able to tell the story I wanted to tell using the resources I had available.'

Ahoy, Me Hearties

I've always had a love of all things nautical. And I think, like most kids, I was very intrigued by pirates when I was young. A friend and I back in the day would always celebrate pirates in July, for whatever reason (who knows, kids do weird things). But ever since I've sort of kept up the tradition and make it a point to learn a little more every year.

Next 3 images via Ryan Pfluger

Having lived in both sun and snow, when you dream, or when you fantasize about an art piece, is there a preference for snow or beaches that subconsciously tries to take over?

KA:'After 12 years in NYC, I still have not gotten use to the winters here. My fantasies always involve a nice warm beach and a lot of sun! It's actually sort of funny though. My film that I am currently working on is actually about a yeti who hates the cold and all my friends that have seen the storyboards have all pointed out that I basically just wrote a film about myself.'

Curious about how the transition from creating characters for preschool television shows, to heading to a studio to shoot for an entirely different audience is like. Do they tap into different area's of your artistic and creative process?

KA:  'Yeah, trying to keep in mind WHO your audience is can definitely be challenging. Working professionally as an animator though, there are some jobs I take that are more the family friendly, geared for children jobs, and others that are more commercial and aimed for adults. Just between those, I have to keep in mind that not only the design, but actual animation style will probably be completely different. So I'm at least a little bit used to being able to mentally shift gears. Also, I think that having a background layout and design, and even lighting with stop motion animation, really helps me when I'm in front of the camera, since I can sort of visualize what the photographer is seeing and compositionally, what will work and what won't. With the experience behind the camera as well, I think it gives me a little more respect for the photographer as artist and makes me more eager to perform well so they can create work they are happy with. I know that it's me in the pictures, but I'm essentially just that stop motion puppet on the set. Without the photographer's skill, it wouldn't really be a piece of art.'

Kyle began modeling a couple of years ago after photographer Ryan Pfluger had contacted him about doing a shoot. Kyle thought it sounded like something fun and different, and thought, why not go for it? 'It's fun to have that different experience than my day job and cool to get to see other people's artistic point of view. There are definitely a few photographers that I would love to be shot by. Rick Day being one near the top of that list.'

Any odd or strange stories from any shoots?

KA:  Haha, probably the strangest was on a shoot with two other models, where I was the only one to actually wear underwear there. So we had to wait for them to go find somewhere to buy some.

What part of your body are you most happy with? What part gets the most attention from others?

KA:  I'd say I'm probably most happy with my legs. The years of swimming, and now running have really paid off. I tend to get a lot of attention for my back and fairly broad shoulders, which is definitely thanks to swimming.

Reactions of family & friends seeing his nudes:

KA:  I've definitely shown a few of my better friends a bunch of the shoots, and as weird as it may sound, I'd rather them see it with me there then come across it on tumblr. The family though... they hear about the shoots I do with clothes on. haha

The first shoot I did caused a bit of a stir with my boyfriend at the time (Marc still). I was approached by Ryan Pfluger and I was excited to do it, and honestly, honored to even be asked in the first place, but sort of embarrassed to tell people I was doing it, so I didn't. Needless to say, once he saw the image on-line he was less than pleased. It was my fault, and if I had just said something first, it probably would have been no big deal at all, but that was the last time I posed nude while in that relationship, as it was a bit of a sore subject from then on. haha. As far as dating someone new, I definitely wouldn't be worried about telling them, or having them find out. I'm not ashamed of it. In fact I'm pretty proud of most the shoots I've done. Would it be first date discussion? Maybe not.

2 images below from Ryan Pfluger

Since both art forms (animation and modeling) have a focus on the visual, have you thought of combining them and shooting as well?

KA:'I haven't really before, but that could be a really awesome idea. I love pushing myself to try new things and to create things that will hopefully catch people's eye. There could definitely be a spark of something in combining the two.'

12 Days: Corey Sevier in The Tree That Saved Christmas

#9 Corey Sevier

The Tree That Saved Christmas (The Christmas Tree Farm) was a great flick to have in the background as I tried to organise (the quit) my filing cabinet. Party Of Five and Mean Girls Lacey Chabert goes home to her family's Christmas tree farm to try to save her home, and the farm from being taken from the bank for development.

The Bank, or the bankers son in this case was played by actor Corey Sevier. So many Christmas movies are shot in Canada, for tax reasons, and because you often find plenty of snow whenever filming takes place. Given the local, there is a bit of a pattern of centering Christmas flicks around American actress's, then filling in the male lead and supporting cast with local Canadian actors. This is certainly the case with BC based Tree That Saved Christmas.

Although he has been acting since he was a kid, I think I first became aware of Corey Sevier when he was about 20 appearing on North Shore back in 2004. Many of you might be familiar with Corey, and his incredible chest and stomach, from appearances on Smallville, CSI, Psych, Supernatural and The Best Years.

Corey currently co-stars on the Andie MacDowell series Cedar Cove, another series shot in British Columbia. Every time I see a commercial for Cedar Cove I think I should give it a shot, and maybe Corey's arrival might have me finally checking out an episode.

Last month in A Vintage Vantage piece I asked if anyone knew the model in the vintage image above. Thanks to a reply from Steve, and an e-mail from Dean, (which included the last image below) the identity of the model was solved. The man in question was Randy Page, a porn actor who worked from the early 80's through the 2000's. Some of Page's flicks include Something Wild, Winner Takes All and Valley Boys.
