Just Because: The Rumble Strip

I drove home from the shore on Tuesday night after a day on the beach. You all know that tired feeling after a long day in the sun, on the sand and in the ocean. 30 minutes into the 90 minute drive home, the talking and jokes started to slow down and shortly thereafter I noticed all four of my passengers had nodded off. I chose not to turn on the radio to stay awake to not bother anyone, dumb. Soon I was drifting into the silence of white noise. Traveling in silence in a car is not really that quiet. The sound of the cars going by and constant wind pressure was actually quite loud, yet still seemed calmly peaceful as I began the head bob dance between almost falling asleep and forcing myself back to alertness.

Image Above via Ian Horncastle

No need to worry, this story does not have a bad ending, it really has no ending, nor real purpose. t was just sort of interesting to me that when on the last head bob of the drive I slid onto the rumble strip. The jolt brought me back to full alertness, a state I remained in for the rest of the ride home. What was sort of scary however was that although the jolt was not long, it was severe, yet none of the others in the car were effected in the slightest by the movement and noise. Obviously the rumble strip did the trick for me, but had I actually fallen asleep I am not sure it would have woken me. I am in the car a lot for work and have learned many tricks to stay awake. Usually on those drives however, I am alone. Blasting the stereo, pulling over to stretch and even stopping to nap are not usually a big deal. Not taking these same measures, in an effort not to bother others, could have ended up endangering those I was trying not to wake up. Dumb!

Touchdown: Rashard by P W Gomez

The last time I featured the work of Kalamazoo, Michigan's P.W. Gomez, I focused on the photographer's location work. I was drawn to P.W's incredible shots placing his subject outside at the campus of Western Michigan University. Because his focus is often on fitness models, P.W. often shoots athletes outside or on location.

P.W. says his affinity for location work stems from his love of shooting seasonal landscapes (fall, spring, winter) as well as historic homes and architecture. For this piece however, I thought it time to move inside and I chose to feature his studio work with Rashard.

Football was Rashard's sport of choice in high school, but with high school now behind him, the 19 year old is moving off the field and giving some of his other interests a try. For many of us, exploring other career opportunities doesn't necessarily mean losing our clothes. For Rashard however, it made sense to make use of all of the time and hard work he put into building and maintaining his incredible body.

If his shoot with P.W. is any indication, Rashard seems like a natural. Not only is this his first time naked in front of the camera, it is his first professional shoot ever. P.W. says Rashard seemed very comfortable during the shoot and was game for every pose and even made some suggestions for a few of them himself. Rashard's concerns were not really focused on how his body looked, in fact P.W. relays Rashard was more concerned so much about getting just the right pose and facial expressions.

'Young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts but in their eyes'
William Shakespeare

In our third installment of Sunday's With Han's, photographer Hans Fahrmeyer shares even more images with FH featuring our current theme, Youthful Urges.

This weeks images are some of my favorites and the video, one of the hottest yet! Turn up your sound to get the full effect and watch closely for a few surprises. Please be sure to check out the new video below and the last two videos and images HERE:

TWINKS PART 2 from Hans Fahrmeyer on Vimeo.

Youthful Urges

The message is we’re not to act
On urges that refuse suppression
And those who listen to the voices
Start their journey to repression

Refusal to accept flaccidity
A few break through the gate
Escape is a guilty verdict, for the pleasure of that time
And all those left behind, still crave the doing of the crime

We hold these years in such odd esteem
What was, what could and should have been
Reality is the urges never really stop
Just brainwashing from a fucking stupid clock

The Return Of The King

It was almost exactly one year ago that I first profiled the work of Maryland photographer Sean Cooper with model Dakota Askins. (The Preserver). 12 months later, Dakota recently stepped back in front of Sean's lens looking hotter than ever! I loved Dakota's long curly hair, but his new hair cut really helps draw attention to his beautiful eyes, lips and face.

The studio in which they were working had a lot of props and Sean says that the king idea was just an off-the-cuff thought he had for the shoot. Dakota looks right at home sitting regally upon the throne. If you want to see more of Dakota, and the rest of the images form the shoot, head on over to Sean's site, Young Buck PhotoHERE:

'Four white walls, closing in around me
This is a curtain call, now I am nothing
This is not my fault, the world is out to get me
This is a curtain call, now I am nothing'
Hawthorne Heights

It was over a month ago when I contacted JrChristiansenStudio about featuring his work. I write often how it is usually one single image that begins my love affair with an artists work. That was certainly the case with JR'w work. When I was starting to put the story together however, I was transfixed by the first image at the top of the piece, and the other images included here. What began with my heading one way, turned in an entirely different direction.

As I was going through images on jrchristiansenstudio.us, I became lost in the feel coming from so many of the images. There was something about the way in which JR shot his subjects, these images especially with the four white walls and the barren room that brought me back to memories, feels and smells of when I was studying psychology at University.

As part of my degree I had several field placements in different hospitals, most often on the psychiatric ward. I still remember vividly the feeling of desperation when one of the residents was taken to what then was called a 'place of safety'. The reality was they were being locked in a room where they could not hurt themselves. Inevitably, with just four white walls and a floor, most gravitated to the only place of comfort and security in the room, the corners.

The corners were the only place in the room where you could feel a minimum of comfort. Hugged by two walls, with a view of anything, or anyone that could hurt you. The longer the person was in the room, the deeper the feeling of isolation became, making the corners even that much more important as they pressed their bodies as closely as they could into the walls.

Of course the men in JR's images certainly don't remind me of the patients I described, but I love the parallel connection of emotion. JR has so brilliantly captured that intense desperation and sadness of feeling isolated and alone, even though you know there is life and others just beyond those four walls. Whether physically entrapped or emotionally, we all have all experienced feeling that isolation and the sadness and loneliness that comes along with it.

'I was always interested in Photography and started using film mainly shooting black & white when I was young. Years later borrowed a friends digital camera & JrChristiansenStudio was born'
JrChristiansenStudio

JR says photography has always been a way for him to express his feelings and vision through images. JR's focus is on men and fashion with a nude/erotic sensibility. The New York photographer says porn starts often make the best models due to their uninhibited nature. I love how JR channels his vision within this set, using the space to bring forth an erotic and beautiful vulnerability in the men within it.

I love when images can take me somewhere, and this set in particular has such intense, yet beautiful desperation within the images. I love the angles and poses used and minimal light in which JR captures them. The one window seems to beckon the men trapped within the four walls with the natural light, and possibly hope, that it provides.

I did a post last year (HERE:) after falling in lust with actor Douglas Booth after seeing his beautiful face in the movie Christopher & His Kind. The actor, soon to be seen in the latest screen telling of Romeo & Juliet,, graces the pages of the latest GQ in a great series of images from photographer Matthew Brookes.

Tossing the Salad

I know it is still just the first week of August, but those of us in the North East woke up this week to our first hint of fall in the air. I love summer, but the last four or five weeks have been more muggy than actually hot and the slight chill this morning was enough to have been looking forward to taking in all that Autumn has to offer.

One of the things I am most looking forward to this fall is eating a bit more. The summer heat zaps my appetite and I generally eat lighter in the summer, melons and other fruits and tossed salads one after the other. Autumn however, means really chomping down on thick and juicy root vegetables and plenty of pork and beef.

Toy Soldier by Samuel I. Lora

'Despite the hard exterior we often sport, we are more than our gender, more than our shell, much more than what the eyes can see.'

There is an obvious and striking dichotomy with toy soldiers. On the surface, just small plastic representations of force and control. Although soldiers undoubtedly have done good things in the world, Rambo and other representations have also depicted soldiers with a strong focus on masculine brutality. Men capable of being both heroes as well as cold blooded killers.

Toy Soldiers however are just that, toys. Small plastic objects, usually sold in packages with dozens of little men, with features to small to be unique, all pretty much looking exactly the same. Although they may be holding a machine gun, it, like the toy, has no real actual power. Most ironic of course is that with no external genitals, they are also eunuchs which is the norm for most toys that represent the male form.

I still scratch my head that figures of war are seen by anyone these days as appropriate toys. There may have been a time after World War II when soldiers were seen en masse seen as heroes. After Vietnam, the Gulf War and the current wars raging Iraq and Iran, we now know there is more these simple toys cannot come close to replicating the complexity to what it means to be a soldier.

It is the Toy Soldier that forms the inspiration for the new book from SILV Photography. I was first introduced to the artist behind SILV Photography when I featured his work as a model this past June. (Snake On A Train& On The Mountain) Samuel from SILV Photography is a published writer and poet, and overall creative mind and says his main desire behind his photography is to stimulate, question and titillate the audience. In beginning to put together this feature, Samuel certainly achieved the questioning. I was instantly intrigued and drawn to his work, especially the series with the white sheet. I questioned the right way to present the images, wanting to ensure I did justice to the artists message. It all came together though when I relaxed and simply spent time with the images. Instead of trying to interrupt Samuel's words, I just let the photos, and the men within, tell me the story themselves.

'Composition and themes are high priorities. Experimentation is a great part of the creative process, and it assists when allowing the work to celebrate, expose and question ideals of beauty, gender and any other subculture within society.'

In Toy Soldier gender ideals are discussed using eight different men within the photography. The photographs are separated into two parts. The first, where each man has his own color edit, is a representation of feminine and masculine energy as it tells a story of a poem inside the book. The second part, which is the focus of most of the images shown still explores gender but focuses on the inner verus social ideals of masculine beauty.

'Each man is "nude" covered by the white sheets as all of the images are tied with the point that we are all attractive and whole in our human shell. The object they hold is an oversized "queen" chess piece, as a play on deities or Greek statues, and the piece represents the female flow within our masculinity even as it is stripped from clothing.'

'Why Toy Soldier? Sometimes life is not a box of chocolates, you do know what you are going to get. For this reason we have judged each other to make sense of things and remove the element of unawareness. In many ways we have become similar objects that aim to be the same color, the same texture, the same size, whilst in other ways we loathe or forget to celebrate our individuality.'

The message is simple, and one we have all heard since we were children playing ourselves with toys. It is also a message that has failed to truly germinate in most people, especially for some reason in America. It sometimes seems we hear, but don't actually learn. Just as one group fights to finally achieve a degree of respect and equal rights, just for being a human...another group must start a similar fight and go through the exact same thing all over again. Samuel's images, especially those with the white sheets, brilliantly depicts an equality of beauty. Regardless of whom is in, under or behind that sheet, they shine.
