The Way He Makes Me Feel

Oh, why is it that every time
I close my eyes he's there?
The water shining on his skin,
The sunlight in his hair?
And all the while I'm thinking things
That I can never share with him.

Growing up a dreamer, and not growing up in a big city, my first introduction to many musicals, movies and characters was through their soundtracks. I have fallen in love with many shows, many songs and many characters before actually seeing them. Sometimes when I finally see the show I'm disappointed, (Miss Saigon) other times, (In The Heights) the music was the perfect entrance to the magic on stage. I didn't see Barbra Streisand's film Yentl until I was in my late 20's. I was introduced however, to Avigdor, and the films other characters, a decade or so before. My mother's cassette tape made it's way into my room, and with my stereo and headphones, I was transported to Poland and Yentl's journey.

John Shea

I really must buy the DVD as every time it airs I DVR it. The songs, especially 'No Wonder' are so beautifully constructed and performed, they pull me in each time. Mandy Patinkin's skinny dipping scene doesn't hurt either. I have posted images from the film before, but after watching pieces of it again on TV last week, I wanted to see if I could find any 'behind the scenes' info or images about Patinkin's nude scene. I didn't find much, except a forum in which it reported Streisand shared Patinkin didn't have any shyness during the scene, but what I did find was actually much more interesting, at least to me.

Patinkin and Streisand in Yentl (1983)

No Wonder (Pt 1)

I knew the Streisand's film was based on a short story, writer Isaac Bashevis Singer's Yentl the Yeshiva Boy, but I didn't know the story had previously been adapted for the stage. Yentl the play, opened on Broadway on Oct 23, 1975 with actor John Shea in the role of Avigdor. The play was performed at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and last 223 performances before closing the following May. Years before Streisand's voice and songs were added, the production was a straight play, not a musical.

Asolo Repertory Theatre Production

This had me curious about the staging of the skinning dipping scene. Most of the production since the film's release seem to incorporated music, even if they don't use the film score. 2012's Asolo Repertory Theatre Production, starring Hillary Clemens as Yentl and Andrew Carter as Avigdor and featured original music composition by Jill Sobule. As you can see from the production stills, Carter's Avigdor kept his underwear on for the scene.

For 2014's Cleveland Play House production of the show, gorgeous actor Ben Mehl, did not... First off, let me say I am sorry, I searched and searched but could not come up with any shots from the productions nude scene, but, the review below, gives a pretty good description of what we all missed...

Ben Mehl

'Much pre-show buzz has been generated by the nudity in the production, to which I say, in the most Seinfeld-ian tones, relax already. The flesh on display is for comic effect, and effective it is. As Yentl's study partner and secret crush Avigdor, Mehl happily bounces across the set, naked and unafraid, and then plops down at the lip of the Allen stage next to a chagrined Yentl, disguised as the studious Anshel. Dripping wet from a swim (with other bare-bottomed boys, I might add), Avigdor takes his sweet time wriggling into a pair of rather thin white pants. (My guess is those in the front row could testify as to whether the actor had a historically accurate circumcision.) Who knew "Yentl" could be this sexy?'

Although I couldn't find any shots of Mehl 'bouncing across the set', I did found a couple of shirtless shots. The writers review certainly had me wishing I was in the front row, but at the same time, gave a rather tantalizing description that certainly helps visualize what the scene was like.

The story and play has been told with more of a focus on transgender themes, not the love story Streisand made by making changes to the ending. I love Streisand the singer, but it was really a crime Streisand the director didn't give the incredible voice of Mandy Patinkin something to sing. If anyone knows of any other stage productions from the show, or has any additional shots from the productions I featured, I would welcome them. In the meantime, lets end with a bit more of Patinkin's posterior from the film version.

'TBT back then before crépe with nutella happened.'

Dancer and model László Major definitely has an inspiring Instagram! László's images are also dynamic, creative and incredibly hot! The Hungarian born László now lives in New York but travels often with Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo.

'If You Don't Stand for Something, You'll Fall for Anything!' Just sayin'...😋

Les Ballet Trockadero is known as the worlds foremost all-male comic ballet company meaning László gets to put on a lot of different hats and a lot of different costumes. I am not sure whether it's work with the comic ballet, but in addition to loving László's images, I also love the comments he includes with his images Sarcastic at times, painfully real at others, but always witty.

The only real downside to Laszlo's Instagram might be his visual confirmation that most men, who don't do ballet, really should not be wearing white briefs. Although Laszlo frequently wears no briefs at all, and also occasionally wears grey and black briefs, his white briefs are a staple in many of images.

'Yeah, I'm sick of losing soulmates, won't be alone again.
I can finally see, you're as fucked up as me
So how do we win?'

'I waited for something, and something died
So I waited for nothing, and nothing arrived'

Tales Out of School: Nick by Doug Vetter

'No one can look back on his schooldays and say with truth that they were altogether unhappy.'
George Orwell

Old abandoned spaces are on the top of my list of favorite locations in which to enjoy images of the male form. Over the last 10 years on FH, I have featured artists and models who have shot in abandoned buildings, houses, farms, steel mills, cotton mills, coal mines, churches, electric and water plants and even an old historic abandoned bank. Although I have featured images shot in a school before, I believe this is my first time featuring a shoot in an old falling-apart abandoned school. .

Long ago closed, but not long ago forgotten. With the exception of our homes, I think schools remain one of the most significant buildings from our past. Our days in school, make up a huge piece our emotional history, with a range of memories from joy, friendship through stressful days and brutally raw terror and pain. Almost every milestone in our early lives occurs during our school age years, and not matter what experience occurs, both the good or bad, are flanked by homework, classes and school.

The last two times that I featured the work of Virginia photographer Doug Vetter, abandoned houses served as the location for his work with the stunningly beautiful Felix, (A Window) and the hunky ginger Cameron. (A Craving for More) I loved the location, and the way Doug so perfectly blended model and pose with lines, corners and structure of the old home. When Doug shared his work with Nick Anthony with me, it was his shots of the 25 model in an old abandoned school house that grabbed my attention and sparked my visual imagination.

The shoot at the old school was actually the third time Doug and Nick had worked together. Every year, Doug visits an private cabin in the Endless Mountains in Pennsylvania. On these long weekend getaways, Doug tries to connect with a model or two to join him to shoot while there. Four years ago, through Model Mayhem, Doug contacted Nick who lived nearby, and arranged for him to visit for a shoot on Doug's last afternoon there. 'Nick was extremely friendly and quite comfortable posing nude. We only had about two hours to shoot, but we got some great images around the property and enjoyed our time working together.'

'Three years passed before Nick was available again for a follow up shoot, He visited me in Virginia and we shot at an outdoor location during twilight on the way home from the airport. Nick had bulked up a bit, but still had that easy smile and relaxed attitude I remembered from our first shoot. We got right back into a comfortable working rhythm as if no time had passed. The next day, we spent some time working in my home studio. After we did some straightforward portraits, Nick was game for a complicated sequence involving paint splattering; and even though the paint turned out to be quite cold on his bare skin, Nick was patient and supportive and we got the result I was hoping for.'

If you look closely, you can see I weaved in a couple of favorite images from their first two shoots at the top of the post. The remainder of the shots, come from the third shoot at the school a few months after the shoot Doug described above. Doug did share some of their studio work, and some of the body painting images, but there were so many incredible images from their location work, I have put them aside to feature in a separate piece in the future.

Doug had previously worked at the abandoned school in central Pennsylvania in a workshop he participated in with a photographer friend of his, David Ehrlich of Images Male (whose work I have previously featured HERE:) After getting permission from the owner, Doug arranged a shoot and met up with Nick at the location.

'We were able to spend a full afternoon shooting there in natural light. The school is a great location with lots of unique rooms, hallways, and stairwells featuring various textures and colors. I particularly enjoy creating compositions that place the model within an interesting environment, highlighting the visual contrast between the space and the color and texture of the model’s body; while connecting the model to the environment by having him physically interact with it, or embracing the shadows cast by the ambient light. It was an exceptionally satisfying and productive weekend, and I am looking forward to working with Nick again in the future.'

The school is conveniently located along the way to the private cabin Doug visits, so after shooting at the school, they continued on to the cabin and spent the next day shooting around the property, looking for images that would complement those from three years ago. The shower images near the top come from this second part of the shoot. Once again, Doug masterfully blended model and pose with location. One of the reasons I love abandoned spaces for locations is the ability of a talented artist, and a young energized model, to bring life, and a buildings rich history, back to a space.

Doug' images of Nick, especially in the school's gym and classrooms, evoke thoughts of the hundreds of students who passed through those spaces. You can just imagine the memories they hold. Memories of school dances in that gym, not to mention all the great wins and great losses for the school's athletic teams. Memories of classes, both stimulating and boring, note passing, head bobbing, test taking and staring at crushes sitting a few rows ahead while sitting at those uncomfortable wooden desks. No matter what our academic and social experiences were, school memories are universal for most. The location, and Doug's images of Nick within, capture so many of pieces of these memory fragments that continue to impact our lives, well into adulthood.

Watch your back Andy...

Many of have been enjoying the Anderson Cooper's vacation pic's, many of which include his friend Andy Cohen. I couldn't help thinking that Andy should watch his back. As FH readers know, I was a bit election obsessed, and even started 'Caucus' focusing on those oh so few political hunks. I watched a lot of CNN and a lot of AC360 and the more I watched, the more I saw how 'moody' Cooper could be. We all have bad days, but Cooper often appeared irritated, cutting others off, scoffing and rolling his eyes at guests. Although the eye rolls may be cute, and may be warranted, they aren't especially professional. I also found Cooper less respectful when cutting off female pundits over their male counter parts who weren't so easily silenced.

But... I stuck with Cooper, the silver fox has redeeming qualities, and I didn't forget how incredible his previous coverage as a reporter was, especially his outstanding work during Katrina and the Pulse nightclub shooting. My respect for him took a nose dive at how swiftly he turned on 'bestie' Kathy Griffin after her Trump video. I don't blame CNN for firing her, although it was a bit rich given they hired Corey Lewandowski and have made millions off Trump, his cruelty and calls for violence. Tuesday night however, I reached my Cooper limit when he unnecessarily chose to call Donna Brazile 'sleazy'.

I don't know what Brazile did. I mean I read the reports, both CNN's and her's, but given the details were from illegally hacked Russian e-mails, the truth is not crystal clear. From what I read, her actions were unprofessional, even unethical, but like Cooper, I have enjoyed Brazile for years, enjoying her dignified and respectful commentary on many election nights. I also follow her on Twitter and see the great work she does with many organizations and charity's. I don't know her, but I knew enough to know that even if she 'fucked up', she has made contributions to society and the lives of others that curbed my need to judge too harshly. Too bad Cooper could not have been so generous. I don't know if he and Brazile were close, or even friends, but they worked together for years, sharing many important political events together on air. He need to call her 'sleazy' on air, even if he felt it, displayed to me so much not about her, but about him. This, on top of his back hand to Griffin has me no longer having any desire to hang with Mr. Cooper. I am trying to watch less 'news' these days anyway, and have been finding myself gravitating to MSNBC when I do want news. They are Trump obsessed as well, but seem to have a bit more of handle on it than CNN's blatant and blind lust for all things Trump related. Sooo.. I'd advise Andy Cohen, who supported Brazile on Twitte, to be careful and not to make any big mistakes. Sometimes friends, even vacation friends, can turn both quickly, and publicly.

'I find self portraits interesting since every decision is made by one person, the model. However, it is also fascinating to see what Warren comes up with when he isn't having to run over and deal with the camera.'

Some of you remember that I mentioned in a previous piece that photographer Gary Larson from Noplacia Photography had moved from Washington awhile ago. This meant he would be no longer living close to one mine, and one of FH's models, Warren Russell. Gary promised however to share his archive of shoots with FH, and has done so in 9 previous pieces. (listed below) This the tenth of the archive is sadly the last.

Although Warren has appeared in several other pieces, both with other photographers, an with his self portraits, it is sort of apropos that this shoot would be the 10th archive piece from Gary, in FH's 10th year. Gary is still hoping it's not his last shoot with Warren and plans on connecting when is back visiting in the Washinton area.

It is also appropriate that this shoot takes us back into the woods. Although I loved many of Warren's studio shoots, the first time I discovered his imagery, he was outside and some of my favorites from his portfolio feature him out in the Forrest. Warren seems at home in the woods, far from whatever stress's might be weighing him down. Warren is also at home sans clothing, and the forest is truly a beautiful place to be naked and connect with nature, and with one's self.

Although Gary and Warren had done some outdoor shoots, and gotten some great images previously, mostly near Gary's home in Bellevue, WA, Warren suggested they try out some places he knew about in order to get the full outdoor experience. Gary's images beautifully capture Warren's feeling of being naked, and outside in the forests that he loves.

As he peels off his jeans and rips off the rest of the clothing that binds him, Warren reminds me of kid ho had been cooped up in school all day, and is finally outside, free to run and play. I especially love Gary's images of Warren in the tree's and on the logs. You can almost feel the roughness of the bark, and the coolness of the moss as it connects with Warren's skin.

'I had seen the beautiful self portraits he did in those places and was really happy to see what I could do during our fist full outdoor shoot.'

A Touch of Drama: Richard by Anthony Timiraos

'I try to capture the emotion I experience when photographing models or scenes in hopes that when someone sees the photograph, they feel the same emotion.'

When I first saw the work of Fort Lauderdale photographer Anthony Timiraos it was his dramatic dark backdrops and beautiful lighting that first had me drawn to his images. Of course the focus of that light, the incredible models, and the creative poses Anthony captures, also played a role in my desire to see more of his work. I had the chance to share a few of Anthony's images earlier this month when I profiled model Frank Campisano, (I can, So I do) and working on that piece only increased my desire to feature more of Anthony's work.

I often call working on FH my 'creative escape'.  Anthony used the same two words to describe his photography.  Escapes tend to be more dramatic, more erotic, and more intense than the sometimes drudgery of consistency that our daily lives can often be. This why so many people, especially artists, create more colorful and compelling visuals when life's boundaries and restrictions are removed. For Anthony, this means having the ability to concentrate on his subject and explore options and angles without any creative limitations.

Having spent years as a certified public accountant in Hartford and Boston and a financial officer for a market research company in New York, creative escapism was a must. Anthony retired briefly, but soon found himself starting another venture, opening a 250 seat restaurant and catering company with his husband. After a few years at the restaurant, Anthony tried retiring again, this time, including a step many retiree's take, moving to Florida.

Even with the warmer weather and beaches, retirement was still not in the cards. Anthony continued to work, including serving as the chief executive officer and president of a foundation serving the LBGT community. Anthony's passion for photography began in college,  but with the stress and hours required to maintain career, it was often difficult to find the time to shoot.  Now, with a lighter schedule, and time to focus on his passion, you can literally feel the pulse and explosion of creative energy when Anthony is shooting, and able to focus solely on his subject and images.

A 'touch of drama' is exactly what Anthony had in mind when planning his shoot with the strikingly elegant and incredibly sexy Richard. 'Classical nude poses with personality and a touch of drama.' was the creative description Anthony e-mailed Richard a few days before their scheduled shoot.. Anthony says that Richard beautifully hit each of their target goals immediately with very little direction. Anthony also shares that Richard is an extremely talented singer, songwriter, actor and model and I love how pieces of his acting, and his music, the mandolin, were incorporated into the shoot.

'Photographing Richard was a great experience for me. Now living in New York City, Richard is an extremely talented singer, songwriter, actor and model. Introduced to me by a previous model, Initially, I was a bit surprised when he showed up at the studio with his hair in pig tales. He assured me that the pig tales were only a way to make his hair wavy for the shoot. As soon as the hair was loose, the personality came through. The expressions on his face were very genuine and dramatic – working with him was a photographer’s dream. He is truly a collaborator.'

'We’re All Business, Mostly...'

I'm sure I am not the only one wanting to make a reservation at the Crowne Plaza after watching the television commercials featuring actor Jack Turner. Of course the Plaza doesn't include Jack with the room, but that doesn't mean he isn't very good for business. Jack is welcoming, friendly and adorably hot, a great combination to associate with a night away from home.

Some of you might recognize Jack from his appearances on film and on TV in projects including; The 10 Year Plan, My Summer Prince and Stitchers. Both an actor and musician, Jack studying Psychology at Oxford prior to moving to the US to work at Google in San Francisco in 2012. It was there he got the acting bug, and has been working in the business since. Jack's charm comes across on film and in images and I am guessing the right role to catapult him to stardom is waiting in the wings.

Noticing Nico

I'm not sure how many may have caught last months NHL draft picks, but if you did, or saw any of the coverage, I'm sure you all noticed Nico. I had seen and read about Swiss hockey player Nico Hischier before, especially all the buzz about his draft prospects. The 18 year old Nico, currently plays for the Halifax Mooseheads, after moving to Canada last year to better his professional prospects in the sport.

The 2017 draft pick for the New Jersey Devils came down to Hischier, and Canadian junior ice player Nolan Patrick, with Hischier being selected first overall. Hischier comes from a family of athletes and although he played his dad's game, football until 12 until switching to hockey. Hischier is a hottie for sure and I foresee a him getting a lot of attention in the future. Let's hope maybe a few naked pages in a future issue of the ESPN body issue.
