Routinely Intimate: Santiago By Gruenholtz

'I was inspired to do the Morning Ritual series because I thought it might be interesting to capture those moments that people would not normally see—waking up, doing morning stretches, bathroom ablutions and getting dressed. And, seeing these beautiful guys, before they brush their hair or do anything else is also a treat.'

I have been following and enjoying the work of New York photographer Gruenholtz on Instagram for awhile now. I love the intimate settings he uses so beautifully uses in his imagery and how he captures his models within them. I had been been planning on getting in touch, but after seeing a photo he posted last month, I knew now was the time. The image, which stopped me in my tracks, was of the shot of sexy Santiago that I used as pic of the day. I loved the pose and the playful expression on Santiago's face. Although Santiago knew who was behind him in the bathroom, his expression of surprise looked like he wasn't exactly sure who it that was catching him naked in the shower. It is often difficult to capture naturally, the element of surprise in photographs. Gruenholtz's shot has the viewe feeling that they were the one gifted, with the sexy surprise of discovering Santiago in the shower.

'Personally, I think guys are most beautiful first thing in the morning. There’s a certain vulnerability that is expressed. And, I do shoot them early in the morning kinda documentary style. For the most part, I do not direct any poses although I do make some suggestions to ensure they are being properly lit in these natural light situations. Instead, I let them guide me through their morning routines. Some of them are quite theatrical—I recently did a project with 12 dancers and their morning routines contain some amazing stretches.'

I totally agree with Gruenholtz's words about men in the morning. It had me thinking back to a post I wrote several years ago about bathroom rituals. ((Executing A Vision) Sometimes the most routine activities, especially when done alone, can be incredibly erotic when viewed, captured and enjoyed by another. I remember catching, and writing about (Third Floor Window) watching a guy through a window, three floors up, standing in his underwear in front of the sink shaving. For him, it was a regular, even mundane and boring part of his day, for me, the experience had a totally different meaning. I love the way Gruenholtz turns they every day rituals into vibrantly erotic visuals.

I am clearly not the only one responding to Gruenholtz's Morning Ritual theme. He started and Instagram last March to showcase his images and just over a year later has over 100k followers. After starting in sports photography about ten years ago, the New York photographer found himself drifting more towards fine-work. Feeling the need to fine tune his skills, Gruenholtz got his Masters in photography from the School of Visual Arts which he describes as the best decision he ever made. 'It brought me to a whole new level. Sometimes you just don’t know what you don’t know.' It was during the time that he was finishing his Masters program that Gruenholtz decided to open his Instagram account and shares that after that, everything began to off. An agent, book deal, jobs, and most importantly, the models. Gruenholtz is hoping to release his first book this fall. Stay tuned!

'Santiago and I connected via Instagram. He lives in Colombia and was coming to NYC for a month. He sent me some of his photographs and asked me to photograph him. To be honest, I wasn’t sure about him because his build wasn’t as athletic as most of the models I work with. But there was no doubt he had a beautiful face. And, he turned out to be one of the best models I’ve ever worked with—amazingly creative, with an ability to transform himself with each set-up. I’m so grateful he contacted me.'

'I love to share experiences through images and personal notes.'

The first image I saw of model, actor and insta-blogger Troy Pes was the last shot I posted below. Troy looks amazing in his tight grey brief's and the light through the window had me thinking he was a ginger until I searched for more. Troy graciously shares many of his images, mostly shot by his friends and partner, on his Instagram and tumblr, The City of Troy. He is also great at answering questions from his many curious viewers.

'We had quite a ball. I still look fondly back at those photos.'

Looking back is something I love to do on FH. Although I love discovering new artists and models and seeing new images that I haven't seen before, when I am truly in need of inspiration, I often return to old favorites. It is one of the reasons I included the line, 'You will also find some of my favorite things, not just from today, but from years gone by' in my introduction to the site. When I first starting exploring the web in the late 90's, the technology was new, but the content often was not.

Social media and instant news were not the norm and many of the first sites I discovered were sites set up to pay tribute to the past. The net was full of pages, forms and message boards devoted classic television shows, films and actors and even driven sites were aiming their glances backwards towards the rear view mirror.

I saw my first caps of nude male scenes at the old Campfire Video site. Most of the caps were not new, but from movies from the 70's and 80's. The photography sites I found were mostly on Yahoo Groups and were devoted to images of previously published books from artists like Bruce Weber, Steven Underwood and Hans Fahrmeyer.

The first images that I 'right clicked and saved' were shots of Peter Johnson, Marcus Schenkenberg, Michael Bergin, Jeff Conger, Eric Nies, Simon Rex and the Carlson, Hall and Brewer Twins. Most of the images I was discovering for the first time were already a few years old, but they were the images that played such a big part in my motivation to begin FH. For this reason, FH has categories such as 'Blast from the Past', 'A Look Back' as well as 'Classic TV shows and hunks.' These days, classic doesn't even really mean old, sometimes things only just a few years old can be given the classic label.

It is also the reason this year I chose 'firsts' for FH's theme for 2017. For the most part, when I profiling a model or photographer, I am featuring their most recent work. I wanted an excuse to dive into the portfolio's and archives of my favorite artists. Actor, singer and writer Brandon Ruckdashel is most certainly, one of those artists. I first featured Brandon back in 2008 after reading a review of his role in the off Broadway production of Edmund De Santis’s Ascension. After reading Anita Gates review in the New York Times, I was eager to see, and learn more, about the actor she was describing.

'The 23-year-old Mr. Ruckdashel is making his Off Broadway debut and it is a stunning one. This is partly because he has the intense blond good looks of a young Brad Pitt with a soupçon of James Dean. But Mr. Ruckdashel’s performance is also noteworthy because his Lorenzo vibrates with the smug and nonchalant power of youth. Father Calvin, it appears, is determined to resist him physically, but the odds aren’t good. It’s not clear who could resist when Lorenzo whispers: “God’s not here now. It’s just you and me.” And this is before he takes his clothes off. (There is full frontal male nudity in Act II.)'

Since that first piece in 2008 I have covered, and uncovered, Brandon in his many roles on stage, television and film, and his work a writer in the recently released Grinder. I have featured Brandon's modeling shots from a few of my favorite photographers but for this piece went back 13 years to a 2004 shoot with photographer Bryant Criminger from Pinnacle Photo. Bryant and I have been trying to find the right model to feature for awhile now and when I remember that he used to have a folder of Brandon's shots on his Model Mayhem page, I knew what shoot, and model, I wanted to share.

Although not his first shoot, Brandon was one of the first models Bryant shot when he began doing photo shoot. Bryant was shooting film at the time, and always had 2 cameras in hand. One with color, and other with black and white film. Bryant says he was 'hard-headed about switching to digital, but after he did, wondered what took him so long! The shoot took place over a two day period, the last day of July, and the first day of August in 2004.

'The July shoot was at Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet SC. There is an old building there called "Atalaya" or "Castle in the Sand" and we utilized that location. I do a great many shoots there and for an model agency I work with. It was a beautiful day that day as you can see from the photos, Always like it when I channel surfing and come across one of his movies playing on tv The next day we shot at a shopping complex called Broadway at the Beach at Hard Rock Cafe in Myrtle Beach SC. What I remember of that day is somewhere off the Atlantic a storm (hurricane) was brewing and it was really windy.'
Bryant Criminger

'Bryant was a really fun photographer to shoot with. The suit series and the swimsuit are two totally different shoots. He shot on 35mm and I think it was one of the few shoots I ever did that were film. It is also one of the few shoots where I think I didn't retouch anything from it. That film really captured a lot of the feeling of the locations and we had quite a ball. I still look fondly back at those photos.'

'Thru Facebook, Brandon and I are able to stay in touch more, Always gives me a good feeling when I see one of his movies playing on TV when I come across them. Really proud of all he's accomplished.'

Boy Bait

'More than just a tasty blueberry cake, it's rumored that this recipe for Blueberry Boy Bait can help a snag the man of your choosing.'

Some of you may remember my post a few weeks ago featuring Andrew Smyth, the ginger haired cutie from last seasons The Great British Bake-Off. (The Ginger, Bread Man) Although the reality show was in it's 7th series, I had only just discovered it last month with its airings on PBS. I have since started watching an earlier season and in one of the last episodes I watched, a contestant was working on a Peach and Blueberry dessert, (image above) that she described as Boy Bait. (Recipe HERE:)

I laughed when I heard the term, but also thought the two words were quite hot when said together. I had not heard the term before, but after a quick google, I discovered it is not new. I expected to find sexy images of men of women showing a bit of skin to attract the male form, but instead google displayed various incarnations of the blueberry dessert, along with a few types of make-up designed to help a woman bit her hook.

I am not sure a sugar filled dessert would attract a gay man as well as a straight man. Not that gay men don't like great food, I have just found that most of them, have learned themselves how to prepare the things they love, both in the kitchen, and elsewhere. When I think of bait, I think of the things that have me wanting bite on and be reeled in. I think of confidence and humour, guys who are passionate about their work and able to discuss a wide range of subjects from politics and environmental issues through Game of Thrones and Survivor.

I of course also think of the physical, the tight jeans, a great head of hair, abs, sexy underwear, a flash of butt crack or the various other parts of a man that grab my interest. Some confuse bait with tease, but there is a very distinct difference. A tease is a verb, an action or description. The opening of a shirt, the wearing of low hanging jeans or a sexy walk. Bait is not an action, but the actual dangled worm attached to the hook. You may open your shirt to tease, but it's the bare chest that's actually the bait. Teases also don't always end in a catch, but using the right bait, ups your chances of hauling in a big one.

David Hasselhoff and Gleb Savchenko prove that some baiting techniques, like showing off your chest (hairy or shaven) is timeless. It worked for Hasselhoff in the 70's and Savchenko today.

'Both the Cardinal and Blue Jay tattoo represent home to me, being from Richmond Virginia born and raised I saw many of these birds in my yard as a child.'

When I first profiled photographer Rae Ellaine's (Stahfysh Photography) work earlier this month, (Crepuscular) I commented that it was his rich blend of color, light and darkness that drew me to her work. It was Rae's Model Mayhem shot of Robert Bane, and shots from an earlier shoot, (above) that had me reaching out to Rae about sharing her work. I was struck at the beauty of Cardinal and the Blue Jay on Robert's collarbone and deep red and blue that Rae so beautifully captured.

When I asked Rae about featuring her work with Robert, Rae wanted to do more than just say yes to my featuring shots from her previous shoot with Robert. Rae planned another shoot, this time at Robert's childhood home, a place he now rents and the place that inspired his love for the Cardinal and Blue Jay. The 23 year old Martial Arts Instructor looks so at home and free in the place he grew up in, a place he has lived his entire life. I love that this shoot takes place in the spot that inspired the colorful tattoo's that sparked my interest in Rae's work. Robert graciously shared more about the two birds that adorn his skin and accompany him always.

'Both the cardinal and the Blue Jay are passionate in song, graceful and though strong willed they balance each other and live well together, as I saw growing up. To me cardinals are beautiful but strong and extremely intelligent, hence why he wears a kings crown to show he has favor over the other birds because his desirable traits. Blue jays, though still pretty, are my favorite of all birds and represent the grungier side of the duo as they've always seemed to be the more fierce and territorial of the two, but I might be a little biased after being chased by a few, therefore I gave the blue jay a knights helmet to represent their tenacity and fearlessness.'

'With this shoot I really wanted to capture the the vibe of a hot summers day in Virginia. We met around early afternoon and drove down to the country where we had lots of great scenery to work with. We were accompanied by Robert's beautiful girlfriend Emily and his adorable brown and white pit bull Peanut. Before we started the shoot He took me on a little tour of his families land. I saw so many great opportunities for this shoot and possibly future shoots. There was a lovely pond full of lily pads and further into the woods was a really interesting creek that resembled a waterfall. We decided to wait until sunset to get the shots by the pond I knew the lighting would be perfect around that time. We began the shoot by an old shed where the light and shadows were absolutely stunning and I took complete advantage of it.'

'We made our way through his huge backyard towards some gravel roads near the woods edge and snapped plenty of great shots. From there we headed back to the pond where the sun was just beginning to set. By this time we sat down by the pond and took some very relaxed casual shots. His Dog Peanut even made it into a few shots and did a excellent job holding her poses I might add. This shoot was absolutely fantastic! When Robert and I work together I always know that he'll capture the essence of the mood and theme I'm going for flawlessly. I like to think of him as my 90's heartthrob male model which I believe translate pretty well in photos. I would say that Robert is one of my most popular models on my social media accounts people really seem to respond to how well he connects with the camera and his overall look.'

Jacob Anderson in Game of Thrones

'I get penis questions in every single interview!'
Jacob Anderson

One of the hardest part of watching Game of Thrones is trying to keep track of all of the characters. Yet, the writers manage to create moments, even brief ones, that make so many of them distinct and memorable. Actor and musician Jacob Anderson's character Grey Worm was introduced a few seasons ago on the show. We were informed early that Grey was a eunuch, but with the exception of a few episodes, has had very little dialogue, and not much story. Yet... through the writing, and Jacob's performance, we know so much.

With only really a few minutes a season, Jacob, along with the equally stunning Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei, have created a quite and beautiful relationship we have come to care and root for. They did through physical proximity and looks. Little time was devoted to the pair, yet enough care was paid to their scenes together for audiences to care about. On last night's episode, the couple finally got together physically.  Worth the wait

'It’s a nude scene and you can’t help but think about that,” she continued. “You’re like, ‘Okay, I’m getting naked.’ And that was really strange for Jacob and I because we’ve danced around that scenario and we’ve become good mates and now we got to be naked around each other. But it was fine and, obviously, done really respectfully.'

Kyle D: Striving for the Impossible

'Just a guy with dreams and ambition, looking to make the world a better place.'

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of introducing FH readers to model Brenden Besecker. (Confidence Builder) The first images of Brenden that I saw were from Richard from The Third Eye. Richard is an artist I admire for both his talent, as well as the respect and care he shows for the models he shoots, and their stories. My experience has been that photographers are primarily interested in what their subjects look like and how they photograph. For an artist, that is just the starting point. Because their goal is to capture not only the surface, but a layer or two beyond, they are innately curious about the person they're shooting, and what brought and motivated them, to be front of the camera.

After posting Brenden's piece on the site, Richard sent on a few images of one of Brenden's good friends, a model he felt not only photographed really well, but a 19 year old Richard described as extremely thoughtful and caring, with a compelling story to tell. 'He is a poet, mentor to others and a hell of a great guy.' Richard sent on a few recent shots he took, as well as a few older shots from Kyle's high school days. I am all about a great story, and the core theme in most great ones is change. It is something so much of us wish for, but it is also something few people truly ever achieve.

'It was one of the greatest feelings to find an old pair of shorts and do this. I can't believe how far I've come and can't wait to push myself even farther. No matter who you are there will always be obstacles in everything you do but if you're willing to work hard and go beyond those obstacles you can truly do almost anything.'

Brenden and Kyle by The Third Eye

High school wasn't exactly a picnic for Kyle. Made fun of for being over weight, he reached inward in order to commit himself to making changes. Kyle formed his own peer support system and together, they work and support each other to overcome obstacles and motivate others. Kyle, who was introduced to model through Brenden, doesn't see it as an end game, but in many ways more of a beginning. There is no better way to demonstrate change than through visuals and Kyle shares many images from his journey on his Instagram, KD Fitness. Kyle hopes that his images, both those before and after his transformation, act as inspiration to others struggling to commit to changes they both dream of and desire.

Next Four Shots from Studio 5 Columbus

What factors led to your decision to begin making changes?
'In school I was made fun of a bit and I wasn't happy. A few of my friends convinced me to play football. I never actually liked the sport but it introduced me to lifting weights which allowed me to make a change in my life for the better. My first step was being consistent, from the get go I lifted 4-6 days a week and that's the key to success. Consistency is essential.'

'Everyone around me has always been supportive of me. My best friend has been my biggest supporter, he was my first gym partner and helped me stick with it. Having a partner was one of the best ways to start out because having someone else relying on you as well as you relying on them is a great way to stick with it and keep consistent. I've shattered all my initial goals and expectations of me working out. I never imagined I'd be as strong or look as good as I do now. It wasn't even I thought in my mind that if ever have a 6 pack! My ultimate goal is perfection and although I will never reach that goal of mine, it's about smaller victories along the way.'

'Superman is my biggest role model because of what he stands for. He's this symbol for good and kindness that I strive for. He also is my goal one day, I chose Superman because he's not humanly possible, he's almost like a symbol of perfection in which I strive for. I strive for the impossible. I will never achieve perfection but I strive for it to better myself each and every day.'

'Superman also reminds me of my father who has worked very hard all his life so our family can get by without need. I come from a large family, I have 4 biological sisters and 4 step sister's,8 sisters and a total of 9 kids including myself. My dad has always inspired me and introduced me into the comic and superhero world I love so much today. He struggled with a job and he owned his own comic business, hence the love for superheroes.'

Remaining images by The Third Eye

How have your insides changed since changing the outside?
'I am a much a much more positive and confident person. I also am much happier and I found I love building other people up as well and inspiring them. My life has become fitness for the most part, when I'm not at the gym I'm either at work or coming up with new diet and workout plans. It is just recently that my mind has started catching up with my physical transportation, I can see that I'm attractive. I still don't see it as much as others do though, at least from what I understand.'

What is the best thing about life now as opposed to then?
'The best part of my life now is to be able to share my story and inspiring others. Every single part of my life now is something that I'm proud of and I can't think of a single part of my old life that if like back.'

Tell me about your work with Richard and Ray from Studio 5?
'Both of these photographers are amazing people that I'm fortunate to have met and worked with. Especially Richard, he has gone above and beyond for me and if he knows about any events he always lets me know. I'm especially fortunate to consider him my friend.'

'Ultimately I'd like to touch as many lives as I can making positive change to the world, not just through fitness but any way possible. Though fitness is my passion it's not for everyone, but one thing everyone does have in common is a dream. A dream of becoming something more and becoming a better version of themselves. I want to inspire others to follow that dream and commit to it. If its your true passion it will come easy to you, you just have to be willing to put the work and time into it. You're not born being able to do amazing things but everyone is certainly capable of it as long as they set their minds to it!'

The show looks good, and steamy and the CBC doesn't shy away from nudity, so fingers crossed.

Some of you might recognize the stunning Fetherstonhaugh face from his guest turns on Supernatural and When The Heart Calls and his regular role in the short lived Matt Dillon series, Wayward Pines. Born and raised in BC, Fetherstonhaugh is the perfect fit for a sports themed show, although his sport was boxing, not soccer. 21 Thunder hits the air next week on July 31st
