James Duval: ACTORS & Skin
'James Duval is the love child of Keanu Reeves and James Dean'
It's always interesting to 'discover' an actor you've seen and enjoyed on screen, yet didn't really know, or connect the arc of his career. I certainly knew who actor James Duval was. I'd seen and enjoyed him on screen for years. I thought he was incredibly cute in 1996's Independence Day and the many major films he was in, especially in the first decade of his career.
Duval was also in one of my all time favorite films, 2001's Donnie Darko. I guess I can be excused for not connecting the cut kid from Independence Day with Frank, especially given Duval was wearing an evil rabbit's head for much of the film.
Thanks to FH reader Nick however, I was encouraged to take a deeper dive in Duval's career, especially the trilogy of films written and directed by the brilliant Gregg Araki. Between 1993 and 1997, Duval appeared in three consecutive Araki's films, Totally F***ed Up, The Doom Generation and Nowhere.
Donnie Darko (2001)It makes sense that Araki would cast Duval, given it was the director who first discovered Duval who loitering around the Double Rainbow Café in Melrose. Duval was only 18 at the time, and didn't really know what he wanted to do with his future. Araki also hung around the café, and it was during the time he was writing Totally F***ed Up. At one point, Araki asked Duval if he was an actor, Dual replied 'Hell sure.' The rest, as they say, is history.
Independence1 Day (1996)Nowhere and The Doom Generation not only marked the beginning of Duval's career, they also marked his first two nude scenes on film. You can check them out in the SKIN portion below.
Nowhere (1997)Duval continued to work steadily through the 2000's and 2010's in dozens and dozens of films, but none really gained the buzz created during the first decade of his career. Some of you may also recognize Duval from his turn as 'homeless man' on several 2019 episodes of Apocalypse Now. Duval hasn't slowed down however, even with the pandemic. Checking out his IMDB page, Duval has no less that 25 new movies either filming or in post production. Maybe I'll need to add to the SKIN section in t he future...

A View To A Thrill: Daniel Lord

'I do enjoy a little bit of exhibitionism - I love the thrill! I do think this is why I am quite comfortable doing nude shoots.'
I love the quote above from model Daniel Lord. Not many models and artists talk about the thrill involved in modeling completely naked. No matter how many nude shoots a model's done, or how many nude bodies an artist's captured, there remains that brief moment, just before the clothes come off, of anticipation and excitement at the beginning of a shoot.
I think that thrill is part of the reason I continue working on FH. Whenever I get complacent, there's always a new model, a newly discovered artist, or a new image that thrills and inspires me to continue. There's a reason so many of us are drawn to imagery of the male form, and it goes beyond just appreciating a great body, or an incredible image. The internet has made it far too easy for us to see oodles of image of naked men. Because of this however, it's even more thrilling when we discover a an image that makes us stop, take a closer look, and have us want to see and know more.
Whenever I contact an artist or model, I like to be able share what it was about their imagery that had me reach out and want to spotlight their work. With Daniel, there were several reasons. Daniel has a great body for sure, and he creates such elegant poses. He also has incredibly expressive blue eyes, eyes that add a level of depth and beauty to his images. What I was most struck by however, was Daniel's face, especially the beautiful side view. It was clear, many of the photographers felt the same way as so many captured Daniel's face in silhouette.
Daniel generously sent on dozens of images from several of his shoots and it was impossible to find a bad visual of his profile. That of course made it particularly difficult to choose favorites to include in the piece. Daniel's been shot by some of my favorite Canadian based photographers, most of whom, I've had the pleasure to feature previously on the site. These are just a small sample of some of my favorites. Each shoot had a different feel and vibe, and loved how seamlessly Daniel emotionally weaved into each specific setting and situation.
What or who motivated you to first start modeling?
It was a mixture of a lot of things. After my first relationship and coming out, I had found a new confidence in myself and started to explore with my style. I honestly really wanted just some good photos of me. My confidence in my looks mainly came from compliments from other people. I had never really realized I was a “good looking” guy until I downloaded Grindr. And along with my friends telling me I should be a model I decided I wanted to try.
How did you get started and what was that first shoot like?
I had come across the site Model Mayhem before and so when I decided I wanted to give modeling a try, I decided to start there. I uploaded some selfies and photos friends had taken and hoped to find a photographer who might be interested in shooting a model with no experience.
Luckily I found a photographer who was also new to shooting with models. Our shoot was just a street photography shoot. We ventured around downtown Toronto and stopped at places that seemed interesting. I brought along some different clothing pieces and it actually was a lot of fun and some decent photos came out of it. After this first shoot I decided I loved modelling and wanted to keep going with it.
Any odd or strange stories from any shoots?
One shoot I did was quite strange, but I still had fun! The photographer/artist was doing a set on different biblical saints. He wanted models with the same name as the saints. He had me pose as “Daniel And The Lions”. In this scenario I was tied up with rope and nude, plus the artist also wanted me to have an erection. He was then later going to Photoshop me into a cave with lions. In this same shoot he also had me dress in fur pants and hooves to pose as “The Faun”. It was a strange shoot but I still had fun being part of it!
What factors did you weigh before deciding to shoot nudes?
I never really thought about it too much. I just knew I wanted to do it. I obviously thought about what might happen if family and friends saw the photos, but then again, I believe the human body is a beautiful, natural thing and there is art in how the body is photographed so I didn’t really think about it too much. I feel I’ve always been confident in my body; even though I’m quite shy, I feel comfortable enough with my body that I am comfortable being nude.
Check out more of Daniel's work with Chris Teel on FH HERE:
How nervous were before your first nude shoot?
I wasn’t really too nervous. My biggest concern was getting hard while being photographed, however it didn’t take long for me to be comfortable with that too.
Did the response from friends/family/partner enter into your decision?
Definitely, and to be honest, not a lot of my family know I have modelled nude, however, I really don’t think they would mind. I am blessed with extremely supportive family and friends!
Had you ever been naked in public before modeling? Nude beach, art class, streaking?
Actually, I had been naked in public a few times before modelling. Mostly skinny dipping with boyfriends and such.
What are your boundaries for a shoot?
I am a very open minded person. I think art takes on so many forms and I love the idea of helping someone's imagination come to life.
Is there a photographer you would really love to be shot by?
I think one photographer I would love to be shot by is Pantelis. He’s a photographer in London, UK and I LOVE his work!
Do you have a dream scenario for a shoot you'd love to do?
I would love to do a nude shoot outside - maybe in a forest or on a beach. I love seeing the natural human body in nature.
How as the pandemic impacted your work as a model?
I actually haven’t done any shoots since the start of the pandemic. I would be open to set up a shoot now (social distanced of course). I have been using my self-timer on my own camera to shoot myself, which have turned out pretty decent.
Why do you think you like modeling?
Honestly I like modelling because it makes me feel good. I didn’t grow up as a “popular” kid in school and along with being a closeted gay kid I never really thought I was “good looking”. It wasn’t until after coming out and after my first relationship that I finally was happy being myself and I think along with that came a body confidence. All the compliments from guys on Grindr also helped with that. I had realized that maybe I was in fact a “good looking” guy and so I think modelling just proves that to myself in a way.

Classical Conditioning: Jamie by Serene Photography Ptd
'I am looking to connect my love for the sport with photography to capture images of those who put so much effort into training.'
The first time I featured the work of Mark from Serene Photography Ptd, the focus was on the ethereal allure of model Vitalij. Mark's goal with the shoot was to capture an almost genderless view of Vitalij, depicting his/her beauty and essence as neither male of female.
Head shot for American Crew hair product
I remember Mark sharing that although things are changing, from his experience, Northern Ireland is still quite a testosterone driven society. This stood out to me as his work with Vitalij was such a powerful push back to this traditional societal norms Vitalij was also the perfect visual contrast to many of the models that Mark often worked with.
For this piece, I wanted to feature a model and a shoot that more closely represented Mark's primary focus. Working out, health and fitness have always been a big part of Mark's life. Spending hours at the gym means Mark often connects with bodybuilders and trainers. It makes sense then, that a few of them, might end up in front of Mark's lens.
'Health and fitness, along with gym training has been a very important part of my life. While I never made it to the bodybuilding stage I was constantly in admiration to those who competed.'
When going back and forth with Mark about which model to feature next, Jamie proved the perfect choice. I loved that Mark's work with Jamie included not only included studio shots, but as well, both formal and candid images of Jamie at competitions, shows and of course, working out at the gym. The imagery captures different aspects of Jamie's life and routine as well as capturing both he and Mark's passion for fitness and training.
As handsome and engaging Jamie appears in the studio and formally posed shots. His passion and energy really shines in this series of images from a show for the Northern Ireland fitness model association. (NIFMA) Jamie looks so at home and in his element, a unique and emotional facet of his personality that would have been difficult to replicate in a studio shoot.
'Jamie is indeed a very handsome guy. He was the trainer in the gum I was using at the time. He opened his own gym and is focused more on power lifting than bodybuilding, but he is still in great shape and a genuinely nice guy.'
Whenever he shoots, Mark loves to capture facial shots, close in so that you can really see, and almost feel the person in focus. Mark feels that if you're visually enjoying something, you naturally draw in closer with your eyes to take in every detail and inch of it. Given his great face and smile, Mark took quite a few portrait shots of Jamie during their studio shoots.
For the shoot with Jamie at the gym, Mark had to pull back focus a bit to ensure Jamie's incredible physique was in frame. He still however, managed to keep Jamie's face as a focus for so many of the images. The outward results of the hard work and countless hours at the gym, are best exhibited through images of the model's body. The passion and dedication however, are most powerfully felt, through the determination seen through a model's eyes and face.

Blast From the Past: Sami Frey
'Black Widow, she mates and she kills.'
I recently caught part of 1987's Black Widow on my 80's movie channel and I couldn't really remember if I'd ever seen it before. Parts of it seemed familiar, but I finished watching it as I couldn't remember remember how it ended. Maybe it's familiarity was due to how similar so many of the thrillers in the 80's and 90's were. They all seemed to have the same look, feel and even the acting and story telling seemed the same. Maybe they all just had the same writers and cast directors.
The casting director for Black Widow does require a shout out though. Not just for hiring Theresa Russell and Debra Winger, but French actor and heart throb Sami Frey. Frey played Paul in the film, and was central to that twist ending that I didn't really remember.
'The immortal story of beautiful Manon, who - although she loves the tolerant De Grieux - takes many lovers to satisfy her thirst for luxury.'
Frey was a fixture in French cinema throughout the sixties and seventies. He co-starred along side some of the most well known French actresses including Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot. The promotional images along had me checking out Frey and Deneuve in 1970's Manon 70. Both Frey and Deneuve's beauty made the subtitles almost obsolete as I couldn't stop staring at their incredible faces and bodies.
'After winning the "most virgin" contest, Miss Canada is married to a rich milk tycoon. But she quickly flees the marriage to experience the world around her, full of sweetness and anarchy.'
I also checked out 1974's Sweet Movie as I read that Frey had a nude scene in it. Although the film was filled with nudity, Frey's didn't really show very much. He did however, experience a sexually charged cramp which led to to him needing help to be separated from the woman he was in when the cramping occurred. I may cap some of the other scenes in Sweet Movie, but some of the film's nudity wasn't really that 'sexy'. Many were mixed in with violence and a variety of bodily functions and fluids... if you know what I mean.

Jonathan Howard: A Dream Come True

'Posing for PLAYGIRL is a dream come true.'
Last month, when I was researching for my post on the history of erections in Playgirl Magazine, (HERE:) one the models I featured was Jonathan Howard. Jonathan first appeared in the magazine in a Campus Hunks featured in November 2000. He went on to appear in three additional pictorials in 2001, (Hot Young Hunks) 2002, (Sexiest Men Ever) and 2004. (50 Hottest Hunks) I also remembered a video I saved years ago from I believe Jonathan's Campus Hunks feature. Although Playgirl didn't make as many videos as Playboy, there are several out there, they're just a little harder to find...
Jonathan Howard
Age: 21
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 210
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Brown
School: Cabrillo City College
Major: Marketing
Turn-ons; Short dresses with no panties
'I once had sex in front of the entrance to a FedEx building with a hot blonde that I had just met. While we were doing it up against the wall, a cab pulled up and the driver started watching us. We just kept on going and going though.'
Jonathan was certainly no longer the shy student we had discovered only a few months ago on his college campus. As he ran around the field naked, his beautiful balls bouncing, we editors geared up for one more cheer. Clearly our human pyramid was enticing the hunk. 'This is embarrassing' he blushed I haven't been this turned on in a long time.' We told Jonathan not to worry, that this was the reaction we were getting from even the most experienced and sexy men. He smiled and said 'thanks' as he shyly tossed another pass.

Blast From The Past: Simon MacCorkindale
'Don't be silly. That would indicate a shark of some 35 feet in length'
Philip FitzRoyce
I was wrong! When I wrote on the previous page I hadn't seen actor Simon MacCorkindale in anything before, I had forgotten about his role as Philip FitzRoyce in 1983's Jaws: 3D I remember seeing the original Jaws with my dad on VHS as a kid. It led to many weeks of nightmares and heading into my parents bedroom in the middle of the night.
Despite that, I love the movie and had to check out the sequels, including catching Jaws 3D a couple of years ago on TV. The movie was pretty lame, but that doesn't excuse my forgetting Mr. MacCorkindale! The British actor had quite the eclectic career. From British productions of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and I Claudius to appearing in Jaws 3D, The Duke of Hazzard and short lived 80's series Manimal. Impressive range!

Lucky # 7: Zach by NICKET
'Zach has a great spirit of adventure and is willing to expand his horizons. One of the most striking aspects of working with Zach is the range of emotions that come through his face.'
Last July, I began the series A Baker's Dozen. In part, it was to commemorate FH's 13th anniversary. The main reason however, was to celebrate model's and artists. Especially those that I've had the pleasure to spotlight multiple times over the last13 years. Given 13 is considered an unlucky number, I decided the minimum number of posts a model had to appear in was lucky number 7.
Although I had featured Nicholas' (NICKET) work with Zach multiple time, he came up one short, with 6 features on the site. I knew it was time to get back in touch with Nicholas and see if we make help push Zach to that lucky number 7. I hadn't featured Nicholas' work in awhile and was curious how his work had been impacted by the pandemic.
Fortunately, the impact didn't impact Nicholas' day job, in fact, he was busier than ever. His work schedule, in addition to the risk factors, meant Nicholas didn't do a whole lot of shooting during the first half of last year. By the time the summer rolled around, things were improving a bit in his areas and he was able to schedule shoots with two local models last summer.
Although Nicholas hadn't worked recently with Zach, he graciously headed back into his archives looking to see if there were any shoots we might not have previously have featured. Nicolas not only came up with the images shown here for a lucky #7, but additional images and looks for an #8, a #9 and a #10 which I'll post in the future.

I've had this series for awhile, but was waiting to post until I found out a bit more about the model or photographer. He's credited simply as 'Boots Murphy' but I couldn't find anything more about him. Anyone have any clues? Given their are numbers on the bottom of some of the images, I'm assuming they were scanned from a magazine.
