Conjoined

While the concept of conjoined twins — two independent people permanently joined as one — is intriguing for many reasons, few aspects spur as much curiosity as how two such people live romantic, sexual lives.

Chang & Eng Bunker

When it was announced that conjoined twins Chang & Eng Bunker, best known as The Siamese Twins, were planning to come to France in 1831, French authorities were so afraid of the effect the men, then 20, would have on France’s women that they banned their entrance into the country.

This post began simply with the third and last image. Fun and fascinating image isn't it. I was just going to ask for captions, but few reply to those types of posts. The more I stared at the image, (and it does keep you looking) the more they looked like conjoined twins. They're not of course and maybe I am just watching a bit too much Freak Show. It had me thinking about the sex lives of conjoined twins (don't judge).

I am sure Ryan Murphy is thinking about as well as I am sure there is going to be a sex scene featuring Bette & Dot. The Broadway show SideShow explored the theme with their conjoined twins Daisy and Violet and it didn't end all that happily.

Completely Comfortable: Brussie by Chris A Freeman

'These photographs are untouched, unedited, just as the shoot happened, which is just how I like it.'

There are two types of model images that I usually save. Images of models that physically turn me on, and images of models that emotionally I feel some sort of a connection with. The images that physically turn me on are saved and usually then quickly deleted to make room for a new one. The models and images I connect with, are saved much longer both on my hard drive and in my consciousness.

Connection is as interesting thing. Sometimes you feel it and know instantly why. Other times you feel it and don't exactly know why. Inexplicably, it is the emotional reaction with the latter that is usually most intense. We all know that it is easy to be physically attracted to someone we have only seen in a photograph. Given photography is a visual art, it requires artists to look beyond the visual, and the physical, to capture traits, temperament and essences of personality of their subjects. Some never seem to master this second sight, but for others it is simply a natural part of their process.

It is always fascinating to me to 'like' a model before knowing anything about them except what I can see on the surface. Chicago's Chris A Freeman knows how to capture personality and I found myself really liking Brussie the second I saw my first image, even before Chris sent on even one word about the model or the shoot. 20 year old Brussie has an incredible body for sure. Lean, beautiful legs and back and of course that butt!

There is something more than just the physical that Chris captured with Brussie that draws your attention. Brussie's face is transcendent, incredible smile with those amazing brown eyes. Some models command, just through stance and look that viewers see beyond just the physical.Chris connected with Brussie through Model Mayhem and his description of Brussie confirms so much of what he captured within the images.

'He's a young artist, brimming with creativity. He writes poetry and hip hop music and is pursuing a career in music as well as modeling. Brussie is one of the most cheerful people I've met and totally eager to work on facial expressions. You can see that he has an unusually expressive face. During my photo shoot with him, he dramatically increased the breadth of emotion and though conveyed through his face.'

'This shoot was on the north side of Chicago in a quintessential apartment above a restaurant. He was completely comfortable appearing on the back porch with near nothing or nothing covering himself. Fortunately, the neighbors didn't seem to mind, either. He loves nakedness, but isn't keen on photographs with frontal nudity, so I tried to respect that. Perhaps someday he'll decided to put it all out there. He certainly has nothing to be "concerned" about.'

Kudos to Chris Rock

Yes I know the sketches sucked and Rock was not on his game but count me in as someone who thought his opening monologue rocked! His slam at Christmas commercialism was hilarious, and sadly spot on. His Terrorism jokes took aim just where they should, at us. There is of course nothing funny about terrorism but the American media literally salivates at being able to report and re-play every detail over and over and over again.

The Boston stations cheered on the marathon attacks as if they were spectators at a Gladiators match in a Roman Colosseum. They re-played the bombing thousands of times over the subsequent days interviewing everyone, and anyone they could stick a mike at. The Boston television stations did not report news, they became apart of it, panting around the city looking for any grizzly detail they could report on and threw it on air without verifying truth or validity. As much as my heart goes out to those who suffered, the press to me was as disgusting as the bombers themselves with their need to shock and draw attention. Kudos Mr. Rock.

Harried!

I sadly missed the memo about Jack and Finnegan (Finn) Harries, but thanks to facebook, I am now officially Harried. The 21 year old British twins have gained world wide fame with their Youtube channel JacksGap. JacksGap was originally began in 2011 to chronicle Jack's gap year after leaving school.

The channel was so popular, it has continued after the year ended, following the twins on a wide variety of adventures around the world. One them had Jack bungee jumping, naked,in a PG sort of way, in Chang Mai, Thailand. Check out the video below.

Temporary Seclusion: Dutch by Covet Image

It is not uncommon to see Hotel Rooms used as a location in the shooting of the male form. For some photographers, especially those who shoot for passion and as a form of creative expression and not as a primary occupation, hotel rooms provide a perfect temporary studio. Hotel Rooms are usually fairly private, usually fairly clean and often bright, thanks to the natural light provided by the large window located on one side of the room.

There is also the roaming photographer. The artist who combines their love of photography with travel. These photographers usually set a destination, then find models in the area to shoot while there. It can be difficult to find models in some area's to shoot, especially models who have not been shot by every other photographer in the area. For these photographers, Hotel Rooms are not just convenient, but essential locations in the completion of their work.

I have written a lot recently about the use of Hotel Rooms with photography. Some photographers, clearly use the location simply as the four, usually white walls to discretely shoot a naked body. Other artists use the space to create beautifully unique imagery in which the hotel is not just used as a backdrop, but instead, the space is incorporated into concept and plays an important role in the visual impact an image has on the viewer.

When I first saw my first image from Chicago artist Ray Golm from Covet Image, the impact was strong. In that image, (below, third from the bottom) 29 year old Dutch was standing naked, bending over looking out through the blinds the bathroom. The fact he was in a hotel was not immediately evident, instead the image had a rather cool, sexy and voyeuristic 'looking at you looking at me' vibe that had me wanting to see more from the series.

Ray shot Dutch while roaming, in this case while travelling in Dubai. Ray connected with Dutch through Model Mayhem and Dutch responded quickly and was immediately game for the shoot. Dutch is originally from the Netherlands but is currently living in Dubai, following a woman if Ray remembers correctly. Ray says that Dutch was a lot of fun to shoot, professional, talented and very funny. Ray shot Dutch for his Hotel Room series, and remembers he and Dutch both having a lot of laughs and fun during the session.

'I started the hotel room series because I do a lot of travel for business. I started thinking about the whole concept of a hotel room and the idea of "temporary seclusion." What actually happens behind all of those closed doors flanking those long hallways...

This new series, which actually started with Dutch, (DutchAthlete) is my temporary looking glass into one hotel room, during one specific day or evening, from around the world. It allows all of us to be a voyeur, even if it's just for a few minutes while you review one of the images.'

Ray originally got involved with photography about 20 years ago, but after a few years of 'getting by', decided to put it aside for a paying career. Ray only just got back into shooting about six months ago and has been astounded by all of the changes which have taken place. Regardless of the changes Ray is experiencing, the creation of great and unique images is timeless. I love the voyeuristic feel to this series, especially the images of Dutch behind the binds and glass. The images had me wanting to see, and learn more and I am glad Ray agreed to share his first, of hopefully many, Hotel Room shoots with FH.

'I remember fumbling around in a black bag trying to load my film onto the developing reel...spending hours under the red safe lights burning an dodging the photo paper...and then hoping that something beautiful (or at least not ugly) developed in the tray. I guess photography is like riding a bike...except the bike has more bells and whistles...and goes a lot faster now.'

I was never a fan of Michael Landon, the opposite in fact. I have not seen an episode of Bonanza, and except for a wee crush on both Albert Ingall's and Nellie Oelson never watched much of Little House. Yet... when searching the other days for Halloween birthdays, I continued to come upon images of Michael Landon in the tub. If Landon were alive he would have turned 78 this past Halloween Friday.

Something about the images drew me to search for more. When I watched Landon as a kid, he was far too old to crush over, but I'm not a kid any more and all of sudden I have a bit more of an appreciation of his face, his body and that thick head of hair.

Bonanza:

I am not sure if was planned or not, but Landon seems to have recreated his early Bonanza bathtub scene again on an episode of Little House on the Prairie, Most likely Landon knew full well there were admirers of his beefcake body who would be tuning in to enjoy. I must say, Landon as Little Joe looks pretty hot! Might be time to give Bonanza a peek!

At The End Of The Day: Shane by Mark Leighton

$

Back in August, I did a two part series featuring photographer Mark Leighton's extraordinary images of Joel. In the first part (A Layover in Lagos) the focus was on images of Joel in and on the coast of Lagos, Portugal. In the second part, Mark took us inside with Joel, including many images of Joel lying seductively in bed. This had Mark and I discussing a future post with a focus on the horizontal.

When Mark recently sent on images for the piece, there were so many incredible shots of different models, I didn't want to lose the individual beauty of each one, of each image by lumping them together. With Mark's support, I am going to be featuring several of my favorites from the series in smaller, individual posts that I will be sharing over the next month.

There was something about the images that struck a cord for me, maybe because I have been in a bit of slump lately with work. Many photographers of the male form shoot models in a bed, but beyond the obvious themes and connections, there was something else that has me loving Mark's series and theme. We have all experienced that feeling, usually at the end of the day. Work is done and you're home. Your shoes, and often your clothes, are off and on the floor, and you're free from the stresses of the day... even if just temporarily for the next eight, ten or twelve hours. It is that sensation I feel weaved within the images, that sensation of both beautiful relaxation and erotic freedom.

That moment each day has become one of my favorites, one not just of freedom, but of escape. It is the time I can stop doing the things I have to, and move onto the things I want to. One of the things I love to do each evening is look for inspiration for stories. My work days usually don't have me returning home until close to 10 pm, so after those shoes, and clothes are off, it is usually a shower and bed. I don't have much time to actually write, or work on the job through the week, so most of that I fit in on the weekends.

I am not sure there is better example that feeling, or a better model to begin with than Mark's work with 23 year old model Shane. Born in Barbados, these images were shot in Portugal last last year. Shane has an incredible look and presence in front of the camera and I have been loving Mark's images of him for some time.

Favorite Import of the Day: Callum Turner

'The investigation to find the killer of 14 year old Cal Bray reveals their dark and dirty secrets, hidden behind the picture-perfect English countryside.'

Sounds good doesn't it? A little Twin Peakish. The plot describes Glue, a British television drama that began airing on E4 this past September. I have yet to see it, but after hearing about the plot, and after seeing caps of actor Callum Turner from the series, I am anxiously awaiting doing so!

Callum in Leaving (2012)

24 year old Callum got his start as a model, working with Next London and featured in many successful campaigns including his work with Reebok. A love of film, inspired by his mother, had Callum transition to acting in 2011. In addition to acting, Callum has also made his directing debut in the short Splinter in 2013. Callum's star is most certainly on the rise and next year will be seen along side James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe in the newest big screen adaptation of Frankenstein.

In The Spirit: Westopher by John M Clum

It has been far too long since I had the pleasure of featuring the work of artist John M Clum. John's images of model and personal trainer Westopher make a perfectly timed return though, especially given John's wardrobe and color choices. John's motto, photography through the eyes of a painter, is always ever present within his images and with Westopher, the base colors are white and red.

I am pretty sure winter, and especially Christmas, were on John's mind when he shot West Hollywood's Westopher, but they were on mine when I saw them. I was away the last few days, and given how mild it was when I headed out, I left some of my windows open. Arriving home this morning, my house was freezing and for the first time this year, the furnace was put on. The temperature had dropped close to 15 degree's since I had left. After I settled back in, I began (finally) to put away my Halloween decorations and as I did, felt my first flicker of Christmas spirit.

It is far too early to haul out the Christmas stuff, but Westopher's long socks, especially with the red and white candy cain stripes, have me thinking of the season as I hauled out my own long socks and heavier winter clothes. Westopher's attire, may not exactly keep him warm on those cold (well coolish) California winter nights, but they do heat up those enjoying the results of his work with John.

I am not really sure if movie lobby cards are still used much for promotion, but there was a time they were in high demand for film collectors. 1981's Endless Love may not have raked in tons at the box office, or won much critical acclaim, but it did leave an impression on many. Like his characters obsession with Brooke Shields, many fans of the original film find it difficult to get thoughts of actor Martin Hewitt out of their minds.

I first saw the flick on VHS in the 90's, but every time it returns to television, or I see an image I fall again in lust with Hewitt. It was interesting to me to see the focus on not just Martin, but the male skin (including co-star James Spader) in the films French and German lobby cards. Or course most countries are not as hung up on male nudity as America is, but I am still sort of surprised it was the male skinning, and not Shields that was promoted, especially for a film released in the early 80's. Like The Blue Lagoon though, I guess some back then knew that it would be her male co-stars, not Shields, who would be remembered from the films.

Below: A particular favorite... not a surprise. The last image is from my 2012 post on Martin that you can find HERE:
