Guy In Van

'Being born during a lunar eclipse can have it drawbacks, one of them is creating three little monster kids who are psychopaths. Killing at random and with great delight!'

TCM continues to surprise. In addition to showcasing Hollywood greats, the channel has also introduced me to some cult classics I have never would have seen, nor heard of, if not for the network. Saturday nights in particular have unveiled some gems with TCM's Underground. This is where you can find some great 70's and 80's cult, and camp classics.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of catching 1981's Bloody Birthday. Odd and mildly disturbing account of three every evil and murderess children who have no limits, nor any empathy or regrets of any kind. Watching these three 10 years wreak such havoc was a creepy blast. The film's cast included Susan Strasberg, Jose Ferrer, small roles for Michael Dudikoff and Joe Penny and Billy Jacoby as the leader of the three evil spawn children.

Like many cult classics, this flick had it's share of gratuitous nudity. Most of the nudity was of course female with breasts flying freely, oddly mostly in scenes involving the children. A peep hole provides the action for many scenes in the flick, both for some nudity and tons of violence. About three quarters in though we this little scene, heavy on the gratuity, this time though with both a girl and a guy.

The guy, who is actually only credited as guy in van, is played by the adorable and sexy John Avery. John had a brief career on screen in the early 80's with appearances in Ark II, Wacko and a guest shot on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. John is so 70's hot with that great face of his, framed by his sexy shaggy hair. Director Ed Hunt thankfully did not shy away from showing John's beautiful behind in it's full glory.

Sadly, John and his partner, girl in van, had not been around enough to learn the cardinal rule about sex in a horror film. In fact, their brief, and last, encounter in the van has a very bloody ending thanks to Jacoby's character Curtis.

Fluidity & Grace: Drew Bacchae by lionart609

'I had this id'ea, very top of mind when I began shooting Drew. When I captured him in this Lotus variation I was seated in Lotus position myself directly in front of him. It was a beautiful moment for me.'

Below: Drew & Ken Scott

There are many photographers skilled at shooting the male form as an object of sexual desire. This focus on the physical body can create beautifully erotic images but with boundaries that remain fixed within the four borders which surround it. There are other artists, who view the human body is more expansive, reaching out beyond the limits of the images borders. It is as though the the image is the core of something, something that reaches out beyond the framing through movement and lines.

Below: Drew with models Strobed and Elijiah

Symmetry and lines are themes I have explored many times on FH. Not all photographers or models are able to create moments of movements, but when done right have a depth that resonates. This is often especially evident in shoots which involve dancers, acrobats and models who have a connection not just with their physical body, but their spiritual self as well. This connection is most present in the work of Jeff Linn (lionart609) whose goal is to work with models able to help express his passion for the beauty of the human form and the yogic mind. Merging the two in the visual expression of the spirit is Jeff's goal.

'When working with multiple models there are many more details to pay attention to; the eyes, the hands, the feet position, expression, etc. all multiplied and all in varying degrees of control. Its almost a feeling, poised with camera ready waiting for that… Now, release the shutter moment. As you can guess its compounded further with a prop like powder. Multiple models moving quickly into an action that explodes powder into the air. Their action however is fast and the powder is slower so again its trying to capture that moment, waiting… just that second later when the dust starts to settle.'

The images featured here are the result of 3 different shoots between Jeff and model Drew Bacchae. Although there are different locations, themes and some include other models, Jeff says that the basic premise of what he look for carries through each time, although it can get a little more difficult to find that moment he is looking for when additional variables are added to the set. Jeff's formal training comes from studying at the California College of Art. After graduation Jeff worked as an illustrator for a national clothing company. His job evolved over the years from drawing, design and then on to video. Throughout the changes however, the one art form that was constant was photography. 'I am continually exploring my expression of the body through many mediums I paint, write, sculpt and shoot this subject however I've never really felt the need to show much of my work until recently, so much of my work has just been for me scratch that creative itch.'

'I first met Drew at a photo workshop in San Francisco, in which he was one of four models for the day. I was immediately drawn to him and 90 percent of the shots I took that day included him. I saw classic beauty in him and when given the opportunity I dedicated my studio time to capturing him in situations that I felt combined my aesthetic with his beauty. I know that its not common practice to refer to athletic strong males as beautiful but that is the way I view the body and certainly what I attempt to convey in my images.'

'I look to show great strength and power in calmness and in fluidity and grace, the subtle can say a great deal more than the obvious. For instance where is he looking, the eyes are the greatest tool a photographer can use to infuse meaning or connection with the viewer. Details matter, tension in the muscles without strain, fluidity rather rigidity, many models can achieve certain poses but is there grace in doing so... not always, but that is what I felt I found in Drew.'

'I have spent several years practicing yoga and working to enter that very space. Pushing the body into a strong tense position yet maintaining a calm, relaxed state. I suppose this is the feeling that I want to capture in images. I would say the same holds true in the leather series. I wanted to bring that tough fetish message that you typically see in dark moody settings and give it light and air and openness. For the powder series I looked for moments of power that were surrounded in soft light, moments of tension with delicacy. I guess you could say its trying to achieve balance; the light the dark, the strong the soft, tension and grace all occupying the same space. I am very lucky to be able to work with Drew I feel he brings that balance into my images and its my job to refine the details and capture that moment.'

Remembered

November 11th is Veterans Day in the US and also Remembrance Day in Canada & The UK. A time to remember all who served, especially those who lost their lives, lost limbs and most of all lost hope. Many young men and women returned home to little or no support and any served silently, not asking, not telling, having to hide who they are. Hiding in secret as ironically they risked, and often lost, their lives for countries not able to accept or deal with who feelings beyond their control.

Maybe it's because I am getting older. Maybe it is too many old movies, or episodes of Downton Abbey. This year I think not about those who others remember. Not grandfathers, whose images still appear on mantels or great grandfathers in photo albums. This year I remember all those who never got the chance to live long enough to be remembered. Those who never had a chance to marry, have children or leave behind a generation of people to miss or morn for them. The orphans, the lonely and sthose who went to war as kids, and never had the chance to become adults. The faceless and forgotten, remembered today.

Oddly Pleasant Shirtlessness

$

Have you ever had your sexual senses tickled by an unexpected source? Sometimes there are men in our lives we barely notice. Some we are not attracted to at all, some we are even disgusted or annoyed by. Then... one day, they're wearing an especially tight t-shirt, show a bit skin or make a comment or tell a story that has us looking at them through a different lens. Here are a few of mine... None of these actors I have been especially attracted to, a couple I dislike intensely, but all... have ticked those senses. It is usually surprising and even sometimes a little unnerving when it occurs. Don't Judge... I am sure if you all think, you could come with your own experiences with oddly pleasant shirtlessness...

Above: Finn Wittrock, Freak Show

Finn Wittrock doesn't float my boat. He has a great body and is very talented, but his AHS character is so repulsive I had felt nothing remotely sexual towards him. Maybe it was his proximity to Matt Bomer last week, could have been all the blood, but most likely it was those retro tighty whities but suddenly last week, Finn generated firm...

I have never seen a second of The Shield, and never fantazied about Finn's co-star Michael Chiklis. There was a moment however in Fantastic Four, where The Thing tickled away for a moment or two. Chiklis brings that same muscled bound quality to his current role on Freak Show. wouldn't want to date him, but for a night...maybe.

Michael Chiklis

When I was a kid, after supper meant running to the rec room to watch repeats of Happy Days and All In The Family. Although Richie and Potsie were cute, a glimpse of Ralph Malph without his shirt showed a pretty hot body under all Ralph's goofy exterior and all those t shirts he usually wore.

Happy Days

I have always respected Rob Reiner for both his work, and his political passions, but I found nothing sexy about Michael Stivic. Sure he got in some one liners, but he was also incredibly self righteous and stubborn. There was a moment or two though, where channelling all of his anger might have been fun.

Rob Reiner, All In The Family

Kevin James, King Of Queens

Kevin James is hit and miss to me. Sometimes when watching old King Of Queens repeats, I find him as non sexual as they come. Other times, especially his delivery shorts, he has a powerful sexual aura about him that needs more in depth investigation.

I don't like David Boreanaz. Not sure why, I always wanted Buffy with Spike and although Angel was hot, he also bored me to tears. There were a few scenes though, like the one below, where Angel worked his magic. When Angel was vulnerable, helpless and usually shirtless he had a sex appeal I loved, especially when he needed Buffy to take care of him and prop him back up.

David Boreanaz

There isn't much about Ian Ziering on 90210 I liked. Might be the character, but when I did watch this show, (which was rare) I usually tuned out most of what was going on with his character. But... every once in awhile Steve Sanders elicited a little bead of sweat. Not when he was shirtless or playing volly ball on the beach. It usually occurred when he was walking, no make that strutting. Ziering has a great struct, especially in his tight 80' jeans.

Ian Ziering 90210

Ross was my least favorite friend, often the downer of the group. But David Schwimmer had a hot body, usually not shown to it's potential in the wardrobe they had on Ross. Every once in awhile, either when getting trapped in a bathroom with those leather pants, or when attempting to seduce a new girlfriend, Ross showed that after a long day at the museum... he was hitting that gym hard!

David Schwimmer

On Party of Five it was all about Scott Grimes and Matthew Fox for me. Scott Wolf had a tight firm body and was cute enough, but there was something annoying, maybe too earnest about his acting style to me. Yet, when he showed that body, on POF and subsequent shows there was reason to pause. He would have to keep his mouth shut during, but if so, yeah...

Scott Wolf

Simon Helberg is the only male cast member that still has me occasionally tune into Big Bang Theory. I sort of half wash, the show, once a favorite, now bugs me for some reason. The female characters still make me laugh, but the male cast, Jim Parsons in particular, jumped the shark about 2 and half seasons ago. It is the same ole same ole. But... when Howie pulls of his Austin Powers pants to dance for Bernadette I pay attention.

Simon Helberg

One of my least favorite characters on Y & R was Kevin. Greg Rikaart is talented, but his character is so annoying, especially as he continually repeating the same mistakes over and over. Kevin is de-clothed often, but I when he does I fixate on those beautiful, and clearly manscaped thighs...

Greg Rikaart

Everybody Loves Raymond, including myself. Debra often turned him away in the bedroom, but there is something about Ray that I could not deny.

Ray Romano

As much as I love my Dallas DVD's, there was not much eye candy presented. I am not really into Duffy and except for Lucy's parade of boyfriends, and of course that season of speedo (thanks Mr. Atkins) the skin was mostly shown by Victoria and her two lovely principals. There was this scene however with Ray Krebbs sweaty from working outside that gave me pause. Might have been because it was cutie Timothy Patrick Murphy he was grabbing, but like his niece Ms. Lucy, I would have taken Ray for a lay in the hay.

Steve Kanaly with Timothy Patrick Murphy

Speaking of Dallas, Jesse Metcalfe does nothing for me. I can clearly see he is good looking, but between his lack of acting skills, and a perceived attitude issue, I avoid most of his work, including tuning out his turn on the new version of the show. This recent image however with Jesse praying (maybe for talent...) in his white undies caused a slight shift in the force.

Knockdown: Chris Abs by macpics

'I shoot all sorts of subjects - anything which catches my eye, really. It might be a face which interests me, it might be a face, and hands, I think can be very erotic. I don't look for a particular type, it's what- or whoever catches my eye.'

When I first profiled Ian from macpics back in 2011, (Catching His Eye) I focused the imagery on some of my favorite images from the Melbourne Australia's portfolio. Ian's love of photography as a small child watching my grandfather develop films and print shots. 'I found it fascinating to see a picture appear from nowhere on a piece of paper.'

With his grandfather as an early guide, Ian has gained both skill and knowledge through experience and his many shoots. The industry has come a long way since those early days watching film being developed. So far in fact, that Ian is now able to offer 3D images for his models and clients.

When recently re-visiting Ian's Model Mayhem portfolio, Ian's selection of imagery and models had greatly expanded. So many images and models caught my eye, but near the top of the list was Sydney's Chris Abs. Chris describes himself a down to earth Aussie Guy whose passions include traveling, and keeping fit, which is clear within these images from Ian.

'My take on life in six words; Live simply, eat healthy, be happy.'

Chris is a new face to modeling, having begun this past year. Chris has only been Model Mayhem since June, but has already drawn in his fair share of attention. Although introverted at times, Chris is also loves to laugh and experience new things, which is evident within his work with macpics. Ian more than concurs, especially with the fun part. In addition to the fun, Ian says Chris was great to work, cooperative, reliable and Ian feels the shoot was an enjoyable experience for both model and photographer.

Chris has a great face, classic and strong. He is able to convey light and fun, yet can turn his look steely and serious when required. Tall, with an incredible body, I also love how beautiful his skin looks and photographs. Ian did a superb job lighting and capturing both the beauty of Chris's body, and his skin especially with his choice of colors to contrast both against.

I love the yellow and especially the orange tones Ian covered and blanketed Chris with. Ian managed to capture both Chris's physical beauty and strength as well as different aspects of his personality. Through his different set-ups and themes, Ian provided Chris with a complete portfolio of looks and themes. Incredible body and physique shots, beautiful body scapes, and images like the one below, pulling in beauty and sensuality with the natural light cascading over Chris's body and skin.

Welcome Back Valerie!

I have lamented missing The Comeback in several posts over the years. To me, the show is up there as one of best comedic television shows ever. Ahead of it's time, The Comeback saw where reality television was headed and milked every hilarious, and painful moment.

I was a little worried during the first half of Sunday's premier. I love Lisa Kudrow as Valerie, but she has sort of copied the character in other roles since the show went off the air, and I wondered if Valerie would hold up. It felt as though Kudrow was struggling to find Valerie again in the beginning, a bit over the top. As soon as she was in a room again with Paulie G however, the old Valerie returned in full force. Valerie isn't actually naturally funny, the comedy comes from the pain, desperation and circumstance the writers put her in. No other quite digs at Valerie's scabs like Paulie G and by the shows final moments I relaxed. Valerie was back.

Mat Fraser: The Outsider Is In

$

'And I’m a freak and I’m an actor, and I’m a freak actor playing a freak. And it’s awesome!'

It's an interesting phenomenon that things are only different when compared to something else. In a room full of blondes, a lone redhead would stand out as being different. You put that same redhead in a room full of other redheads, and add just one of those blondes, and it is now the blonde who is the outsider.

There is something beautiful about the assembly of actors and characters on this season's American Horror Story Freak Show. Together, they are groups outsiders, bonded together as family. They are only freaks to those outside of the tents, the ones who pay to come see them. To them, those paying customers are the odd ones, the ones to be careful around and fear...the freaks.

When I first saw actor Mat Fraser who plays Paul the Illustrated Seal I was intrigued. It took me a few minutes to figure out what was real and what was CGI on the show and except for most of his characters tattoo's, what you see of Mat is beautifully real. I saved a few images to do a piece under my 'unconventional hunk's section of the blog, but after getting to know a bit more about the English actor it didn't feel right. Unconventionality is so much more than a label, it is both a way of life for some, and a way of being that so often separates more than bonds.

Mat is so much more than his differences, he is an actor, musician and performance artist who skillfully uses both what we connect to, and what we struggle to understand within his work. Mat also has a undeniable sex appeal, one the producers of AHS obviously saw as last night his character was the object of desire for both Jessica Lange and Grace Gummer, and front and center in the story.

When you search Mat Fraser on-line, the resulting images may come as a surprise. Mat even cautions AHS fans who come to his site they may see some things they don't like. 'I’m fundamentally an Outsider artist, free thinking and independent' I didn't see anything I didn't like, in fact I was incredibly fascinated at the performance artist piece of Mat's work and how free has been to use his body within his art, and with his message.

Mat's unapologetic presentation of himself as not just a man with a disability but as as a sexual being is both refreshing and necessary. Mat's sexual energy is evident on screen whether clothed or not and it can't be denied or hidden. By removing those clothes however, he challenges everyone who struggles, or refuses, to see or accept that those on the outside have the same sexual desires as they do. Mat's real life perfectly embodies so many of the themes of AHS this season and now that Hollywood has discovered him, I look forward to much more of his work.

At The End Of The Day: M Smit by Mark Leighton

Mirror Mirror...

'That feeling, usually at the end of the day, work is done and you're home. Your shoes, and often your clothes, are off and on the floor, and you're free from the stresses of the day... Even if just temporarily, for the next eight, ten or twelve hours you're time is your. The sensation of both beautiful relaxation and erotic freedom.'

In my second installment of At The End Of The Day, I present photographer Mark Leighton's images of Rotterdam model M Smit. I know describing someone as cherub like may not be a compliment, but within these images, Mitchell's hair, face and beautiful eyes are both angelic and hypnotic. Mitchell's hair is shorter in much of his other modeling work, but I love the look Mark captured here and am as captivated by his look as he seems to be with mirrored reflection. A beautiful set of images to spend some time with at the end of the day.

With my recent blog pieces about the December release of Into The Woods, it was fantastic to read about the reunion this past Sunday at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County California. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine were joined by original Broadway cast memebers; Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, Chip Zien, Robert Westenberg, Kim Crosby, Danielle Ferland and Ben Wright.

Not only did they share stories of the original production, The Witch, Baker, Barker's wife, Cinderella, Prince, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack sang some of their most famous songs from the production. Would have loved to have been there!

First Snow by Richard Rothstein

'I smell Snow!'
Lorelai Gilmore

I used to get as excited as Lorelai each winter with the smell, and sight of the season's first snow. After last years brutal winter however, I was less than enthusiastic with yesterday's arrival of snow. It still looked beautiful when I looked out the window, but while I was searching for the car scraper, my memories of last winters blizzards, power outages and shovelling marathons dampened my usual tradition of welcoming the winter.

I am hoping as Christmas gets closer, my love of the white stuff might return. Until then however, I can still find joy in winter themed images, especially if they're from New York chronicler Richard Rothstein. I first saw images from this set on Richard's site a few years ago and am happy to feature more from the series.

I am not sure if it is the snow or the colors, but there is almost a combination of modern and retro within the images. Even though the models might be wearing fashion and underwear from the 2000's, the tree's and surrounding of Central Park look as if they have stood still, almost frozen in time for decades. Following Richard and his models into the park on a snow day reminds me of the joy and excitement that first snows usually bring children... and a few adults.

That feeling before snow became associated with work, or horrible travel conditions. A time when snow was simply something to be enjoyed, to be played in, walked through, rolled in and occasionally even tasted as you raised your head to the sky licking the flakes as they flow down and none tasted better than that first snow of the season.

Tell Me Your Stories: Nizar M by Wim de Roo

$

'Yearning, burning.... For you to justify my love.'

One of the questions I usually ask models is how they got their start in the beginning. Was it a life long dream or something they fell into. The stories are varied and for Belgium model Nizar M, completely unplanned. Nizar is a student and says although he was always a bit curious about fashion and photography, never really ventured into it, unless of course you count watching a bit too much of fashion TV.

'I was picked (by chance as I was shopping in Brussels) for a local model competition. This allowed me to actually be in the middle of this world I've always seen from a distance. I got to do training seminars, runway shows and photo shoots with people who have a lot of experience in this domain. This really opened my appetite and made me want more as I felt really at ease in front of the camera and enjoyed working with the photographers.'

When going through Nizar's portfolio, many of my favorite images were from Rotterdam photographer Wim de Roo. I have long been a fan of the artists work, especially his vintage black & white theme. These images represent two of the themes Nizar shot with Wim. The images above were inspired by Madonna's Justify My Love video. Both Nizar and Wim are big Madonna fans, and Justify My Love one the singers most controversial videos, it was even banned from MTV due to it's sexual themes and imagery.

The second set of images uses Wim's love of vintage uniforms, and those in, and out of them. Wim's background as a stylist and designer is evident within the images, and the story. Nizar's sailor appears on leave, I just haven't figured out whether he is getting ready to hit the town, or is just getting back from an evening out.

'This was my 1st shoot with Wim. We wanted to recreate the sailor theme in a vintage black and white look. Wim has a long experience in creating sets and shooting the naked male body in his vintage settings. As for me, I felt at ease in front of Wim's camera especially that I've always been a fan of the whole sailor/Jean-Paul Gaultier theme.'

Thumbs Down: Winter Finales

$
0
0

What is with this new phenomenon of networks splitting seasons up with a 'Winter Finale'. It feels like the season only just begun and already we about to embark on shows ending their Autumn run until sometime in the New Year... I appreciate networks not wanting to throw too many repeats into the mix, but taking over a two month break mid-way through the season is only further eroding the ratings for network shows. This break, only slightly shorter than the summer, gives viewers yet another chance to live without the shows they like, and find other cable programming to enjoy.

Television shows always took a Christmas week break, but most usually ran new episodes til then. These long winter breaks also take away from Christmas and holiday themed episodes so many of us remember loving when growing up. I used to love when ER had their yearly Christmas episode, usually with half the staff getting snowed in with a blizzard. I don't endorse massive television viewing on holidays, but not everyone wants to spend every hour of the day conversing with cousin Ben. Why not take a page from the UK where some shows, like Downton Abbey, have huge Christmas night airings, these episodes often end up being the highest rated episodes for the season.
