Behind the scenes: Cary and Tarek by DAVISICON

Regular readers of FH know that 'Behind The Scenes' is one of the themes I have been exploring this year. I have been asking many of the artists that I profile to include a few behind the scenes shots that I can include. Since 'story' has always been a major focus for me, so much of the story often occurs behind the scene, or in the many out-take shots which occur on every shoot. In many ways these images can be as fascinating and beautiful as the final, edited images. There is also an erotic, even voyeuristic vibe to images captured during the shooting the process. We are not necessarily viewing anything we wouldn't be seeing in the final edited images, but these behind the scene moments often show us a side, unveil a little secret, and show us what goes on in the process of creating some of the incredible images we all enjoy so much.

It is always a pleasure featuring the work of William from DAVISICON. William puts immense thought and care into every detail of his work. The results, beautifully erotic and always elegant captures of the models he captures. Two of those model, both of whom I have featured before, are Cary and Tarek. Cary was featured in one of my early pieces on William's work, 2012's Recumbent. We got got know Tarek in the feature Meeting Tarek from October of last year.

You never know what will happen when your shooting a male model, especially when they're naked and your shooting outside. If you glance at the image at the top of this post, you'll understand. The image, if you didn't look closely enough is of one cheek of a models beautiful behind. William was beginning a theme of writing words on specific body parts. In order to create the effect he wanted, William was using icing sugar that came in those gel tubes used to write on cookies and birthday cakes. To practice the effect, he started by writing DAVISICON on the first model. But... as you can see, a fly also found that sugary butt, too delicious to ignore.

Below: Cary making faces and goofing around with the lion fountain on William's patio.

'In over 30 years of doing photography, there are always going to be favorite subjects, people, and/or things or locations that I enjoy shooting most. Some of the best photographs or funny photographs are the ones that are unplanned, the outtakes that you would normally not shoot or use for the uncontrolled outcomes when your shooting outside. Two of my favorite male models in recent memory are of course Cary and Tarek, their very similar as far as their personalities and humor, they are willing to do almost whatever it takes to get the right shot and along the way they love to have fun.'
DAVISICON

'Many other shots also end up being fun and interesting, whether it's Cary pretending he's in a Downey commercial for fabric softener smelling his robe to see if it's "downy fresh" or pretending to look at a photobook and make funny expressions.'

-Tarek-

Above: Final Edited Image
Below: Out-take from the shoot

I think William's images of Tarek really show the contrast between final image and the out-take shots. Tarek looks great in both but you can see the sexy confidence and attitude he exudes when in full pose with William's camera ready. I think my favorite shot is the last one in the piece. The edited shot is in the first piece I did featuring Tarek, but I love his smile, and those sport socks in the out-take!

'Tarek making faces while practising posing, or those unexpected laughing spells over a joke or Tarek taking a break to check his email, do a little texting and adding some ideas to our posing list. These are just but a few of the things I enjoy occasionally photographing during my sessions. I hope the fun continues with many new aspiring models that I haven't met yet, but hopefully I will be fortunate enough to photograph in the future.'

Back Off Brother!

Looks like Zach Oleynik's days are numbered on Big Brother Canada. I have enjoyed watching the show the last few years, and if you can't watch it on TV, it is usually on-line with Twitter posting each episode within a few hours of it's airing. The first two season were great, mainly because they didn't repeat all of the crap that has bogged down the US version. The US version has become so scripted, and overly 'twist' heavy it has been hard to keep watching.

Sadly Canada's third season seems to have quickly fallen to Big Brothers peer pressure. Of course, I hate seeing the hotties evicted, but it's more how. The producers have stuck their nose in so often, actually playing the game socially or with skill has become pointless. For some reason, so many (including the Producers) seem fixated on a Sarah or Britnee win. Britnee is one of the most boring players in history and except for a few chance wins at opportune times, has really done little but complain. Sarah is just unlikable, whiny and hateful most of the time.

I was hoping for a Bruno win, but I guess with Zach going, I can only root for Godfrey. I hope the show gets back on track next season keeping and reduce their interference a bit. While I'm at it, where the heck is Marcia Even when the game gets boring, a little moose always makes it more entertaining to watch!

Kudos to The Billboard Awards

Kudos to The Billboard Awards for doing the seemingly impossible. Welcoming Kanye to the show but ensuring we the audience neither see, nor hear him. Bravo!

The Award show was a mixed bag of odd hosts, presenters and nominees. Almost no one sang exactly live with Mariah perfecting the lip-syncing as she intermittently spoke to the audience and sang to track to help cover the fact she wasn't really singing much at all. On the plus side, it was an entertaining show that helped take my mind off the fact I stupidly have never started watching Mad Men. Also, given I am well into my late thirties, my fantasy's about a fivesom,e (now foursome) are a little less odd now that all of One Direction are now officially over 21.

I was left with just a couple of questions.... Is Nick's success because he is the most talented brother, or because he's the hottest and shows the most skin?

With all the hotties in pop and rock, I think I would still take a pass for Ed Sheeran.

I love me some Jussie Smollett and Bryshere Grey but who else wants to see Trai Byers join his brothers on stage!

And lastly

I will never figure out how the Swift (above) morphed into the Swift (below). (although my theory is HERE:) As talented as she may be, loving that little country girl with the guitar has not really paid off for some of us. Gone, along with all those curls, is her authenticity. Swift has a nice voice for country, but not the power for the Beyonce light tracks she is now starting to sing. Well, at least Mariah and Britney were there to share some tips!

A Piece Of Art: Teak by MaleVisionS Photography

$

'It is a joy to be around art and to do my part in contributing to it. I have control of my body; Seeing that control, embodied in various artistic mediums, is thrilling.'

There have always been people who seem to lack the ability to distinguish the difference between art and porn. For many, any visual depiction of a breast, butt or vagina, heaven forbid a penis, are thrown into the category of porn. Although there are many artists who thankfully like to push the boundaries, many of us believe what separates art from porn has nothing to do with a naked body. For me, it has always been about intent, the pose and especially the face.

Arousal seems to confuse some even further. Both art and porn can be arousing, erotic and sexual. Art requires it's audience to enjoy, appreciate and hold on to that feeling, at least for awhile. Porn on the other hand, demands you act upon that feeling, and the sooner the better. How many times have we seen an image of a model where their eyes, their mouth, and their facial expression turn an image into something raunchy, even though the model is fully or partially clothed. On the other hand, you have images like this set of Teak by MaleVisionS. Teak's poses and facial expressions, even though erotic and provocative, are done to create not just a physical reaction, but an emotional one as well. Porn connects the viewer to a person, art, the viewer to a person.

'Through modeling, I hope to normalize nudity. Some of the shots I have taken are not intended to be erotic, for there is beauty in the form of the human body that transcends seduction. Its not necessarily that I think my photos aren't erotic, but they’re not pornographic. There is a proper medium between fake or over-sexualized material and emotionless forms. That is where I try to be. It's also just fun to see how contorting my body produces in a shot. Modeling can be complex. With communication between model and photographer, shadows, textures, lighting, poses, and many more factors that can affect a shot, both the model and the photographer need to be very conscious to produce quality work.'

I love the way Teak uses his body to create living sculptures. Teak and Dan (MaleVisionS) skilfully avoid any unnecessary clutter, thus, avoiding any barriers in connecting model with emotion and of course, viewer. When asked what body part gets the most attention, Teak shares that he gets a lot of comments about his back, butt, and penis as well as how his eyes interact with the viewer. The 23 year old Tuscan model's long lean body comes from staying active, but not through daily work out routines or lifting weights. 'I think that an active lifestyle, mental health, and a diet focused on local products produce a beautiful body. By normalizing nudity, we can promote health and destroy the entrenched fear of the human body.' Teak's desire to normalize the nude male form can be challenging, especially with the myriad of offers nude male models often receive.

'Somebody asked if I wanted to do a bondage scene in a shower for a short film. I considered the offer, but I feel like nude modeling edges between porn and figure modeling. I would rather focus my work on the body, or art in the human form. This is in part because of my intent to show people that the human body is a piece of art, not something worthy of shame.'
Teak

'Teak is a natural. As soon as the first strobe fired he was "on". While I initially gave him direction it became clear to me early on that I should just shut up and turn him loose. I did just that and the results speak for themselves. What a great morning it was. I have had the privilege of shooting Teak on two more occasions and each shoot was more fun and rewarding than the one before. I have been shooting figure study for 20 years and in that time I can count on one hand the times I have had a model bring to the shoot more than just a beautiful physique. It is something that I cannot describe other than to say I know the model has this added talent as soon as the first strobe fires. Teak has this talent and is just a joy to shoot.'

MaleVisionS' Dan Nelson works hard to create an environment in which the model is comfortable and relaxed, especially when shooting nudes. 'It has been my experience if the model is uncomfortable with the photographer, it shows in the images.' Teak was referred to Dan by photographer friend who felt Teak had great potential as a figure study model. The first time they shot, Dan's had no shooting plan in mind other than getting him in front of the his camera to see where their imaginations make take them. The results of there first shoots can be seen in the last two black and white shots at the bottom. Dan's philosophy of shooting a figure study is that the process is a collaborative one and works hard to to ensure the models he shoots are engaged in the process.

'Working with MalevisionS was pretty smooth since I had already modeled once previously and knew what the camera would read from the shadows on my body. Dan made a comfortable atmosphere and coached me through the poses with compliments and mild coaxing. The first shoot was on a thick cloth so I flowed through poses and the material allowed me to truly relax. The second shoot was similarly relaxed, but the grey backdrop made me feel more icy. The shots showed my poses were more striking and the angles of my body, sharper. Dan is talkative and direct when he sees something that looks right, while I’m moving around on the set. Good communication leads to good prints!'

'It took six months to realize we were living different fantasies and another six to admit they were incompatible. Though I'm embarrassed I could have let that happen, I long to be so moved again.'

Brett Gleason shot by Stanley Stellar

It has been over five years since I was first introduced to the music and the artistry of Brett Gleason. In that five years, I have been continually surprised and impressed at the breadth of his talent, his strength and his refusal to produce anything close to typical or ordinary. Whether it be his music, his videos or his modeling, Brett always manages to produce something unique to the voice of who Brett Gleason is.

This comes through loudly in not just his music, but the visuals used to express it. It comes through in his modeling and the risks he takes getting naked both physically and emotionally in front of the camera. This is certainly seen in these images from the incredible Stanley Stellar. Brett says that he'd never done anything quite like this before and loves how statuesque the images turned out. This same raw emotion and nakedness comes through in his writing, whether be a song or a thought piece like his most recently article for The Huffington Post.

In Brett's recent Op-ed piece, Brett asks the question, Does Love Fade as We Grow Older? It is a question I think all of us have asked as we age, maybe especially those moving through live on their own. Most of us experienced passionate, even frenzied relationships when we were in our teens and early twenties. I cringe remembering my own desperation to hold to to someone who so clearly didn't want to be held, especially by me. Those late night calls, though tears and the begging.... As painful as it was, there was an intensity that I can't help but look back on with a fondness. Maybe even with a little sadness, that such intensity may never be experienced, in quite the same way... again.

Brett Gleason • Expiration Date (Live)

Given it has been just over a year since the official debut of Brett's album (which you can check out HERE:), it is appropriate of course to add a song. Although Expiration Date is not on that album, given it was Brett's first attempt at a love song, it certainly beautifully fits the theme. Lyrical / Beautiful: Sunel Molina by TR Pics

'To say that Sunel Molina is a powerhouse is liking saying the sky is blue, or that fire burns. Stating the obvious here, but once you meet Sunel you realize there are very few people in this world with such passion, drive, creativity, heart, and looks just cute as can be.'

I could feel the energy, creativity and passion Tom described the first moment I saw Sunel Moina's work in front of the camera. First impressions often prove to be crucial, and this was certainly the case when Tom Rubeck (TR PICS) and Sunel first met. Tom recalls that Sunel was someone who immediately made a presence in the Dallas area when he moved there a few years ago. Tom was first introduced to him when he was commissioned to shoot the cover for a (now defunct) State-wide gay magazine, This Week in Texas', or the TWIT.

'The editor had arranged for a group of club dancers to come in for the shoot. All these guys were young, some hung over, some just plain tired...but Sunel stood out as not only the cutest but by far the most professional. I liked the end product okay enough, but I knew I wanted to work with him again, and... as soon as possible.'

Sadly, it did not happen as quickly as Tom would have liked. Flash-forward three years, after countless requests from Tom that went no where, he noticed Sunel's image popping up again around town. Tom tried contacting him once again. Tom shares that Sunel seemed a bit reluctant at first, but agreed to shoot some images with the theme of masculine men wearing female-like clothing. Although this would be a new area for Tom, he wanted to shoot with Sunel so though 'why not!' The rest as they say, is history.

'We hit it off pretty much once we jumped out of my car and into the streets of downtown Dallas, Texas. He was fearless, and glamorous, and sexy, and funny...and new how to "work it". This was the start of a fantastic relationship which has now turned into a really solid friendship.'

Sunel says that although a small guy, he knows how to 'work it!' Originally from Havana, Sunel moved to the United States at the age or 7 and grew up in Los Angeles until the age of 19. After a short move to Dallas, Sunel moved to Puerto Rico and it was there he discovered his love of acting, modeling and being in front of the camera. 4 years ago, Sunel returned to Dallas to be closer to his family and take care of his mother who was suffering with Alzheimer's and dementia. When back in Dallas, Sunel returned to modeling and the arts with a focus on singing, the performance choice he hopes to eventually make his career. Given the light and energy Sunel channels within his work, I was curious as to if Sunel was a stage name he created form himself. Not so, Sunel's name originates from combining the beginning of 'Susana', his mother's name, with the beginning of 'Nelson', the name of his father.

'Tom and I kept talking about doing stuff together so when it finally happened it was awesome! We hit it off right away with how we work. He's amazing and very open minded. Tom was not afraid to grab his camera and head out onto the street with me bringing out my outfits, high heels and see through clothes. There we were, shooting out on the streets, in the middle of winter with me in a one piece bikini!'

The connection and trust between model and photographers is evident their work, especially when shooting out on the streets of Dallas and when back in the studio when another model was brought into their work. Sunel says it is great working with someone who knows what you're wanting to achieve. Tom loved that Sunel had very specific ideas but was flexible to tweak them during the shooting process when necessary. Sunel hopes he and Tom continue to keep shooting, and they even have a few ideas for future themes including a possible Beauty and the Beast inspired shoot

Many readers of FH might recognize the model who joined Sunel in his last two shoots he had with Tom. Saul has been a favorite of mine and I have profiled his work a few times on the blog, including a piece from 2013, (HERE:) featuring Saul's work with Tom.

Tom loved the results of shooting Sunel with Saul. Although the shoot was impromptu with Saul in from out of town. Tom recalls that although they had a very brief talk about the shoot, when they got together, the guys stripped down and moved in and out of pose so beautifully and naturally together. 'The end results were amazing. Lyrical and beautiful. Well, actually, just like Sunel.'

'Sunel doesn't like and doesn't shoot boring. His pushing his limits and ideas, in turn, pushed me and my creativity.'

Favorite Five: Valentin Chmerkovskiy

Admittedly I didn't watch much of this seasons Dancing With The Stars. I did however, watch enough to be happy for Valentin Chmerkovskiy and his partner Rumer Willis. Although I loved me some Noah Galloway, Val deserved a win and Rumer was great, erasing years of being known mostly for all those odd faces she would make in paparazzi shots with her parents. In celebration, I thought it appropriate to choose Valentin for FH's Favorite Five! With his incredible dancers body, great face smile, choosing five was as usual quite a task.

I am not sure Val could take a picture that wasn't oozing sex appeal, even his selfie's with fans (above) are hot! Given how much skin DWTS like's on display, finding images wasn't hard, but Val also posts 'morning face' often on social media, and each one worthy of making the list. Paul Richmond: Waves Of Fortune

This past spring, I was fortunate to come across the work of artist Paul Richmond. In my first piece on his work, Unspeakable Words, I focused mostly on Paul's book illustrations after discovering his artwork for the novel Shy. When working on that piece, I saved the image below, Catch Of The Day, Paul's newest painting which is available on his site HERE:

Catch Of The Day

Beach Bum by Paul Richmond

Given one of the inspiration's for Paul's work is classic cheese cake pin-up images, it makes sense that the beach makes a few appearances within his his art. One of my favorites, is Beach Bum inspired by the vintage Coppertone girl from their famous print ads and television commercials.

The 'Coppertone' pose has been the inspiration for many artists over the past few years including photographer Annie leibovitz who used the shot as inspiration for her 1993 shoot with actor Mark Wahlberg.

For his vision, Paul approached writer and photographer Alan Ilagan to take on the cheesecake boy role in the piece. Instead of a cute little cocker spaniel, Paul thought it would cuter if the tugger was not a dog, bu a second speedo-clad hunk!

'Without a secondary model to execute the pose, Alan devised a brilliant way of achieving the same effect for the photo reference. I love the effort he put into making sure the tugging of the speedo was just right! Meanwhile, that hook contraption might come in handy down the road!'

'Thankfully Alan is no stranger to disrobing on cue. I knew he would be the perfect subject for a summertime pin-up scenario, and when I contacted him to propose the idea, he was happy to drop trou for the sake of art. It’s not the first time he’s been an artistic muse either. Just yesterday I learned that Michael Breyette has also done a portrait of him -- a gorgeous, speedo-lover’s delight called Alan in Blue. After sharing my concept with Alan and sending him some examples of what I was looking for, I was thrilled to receive a number of fantastic photo references from him. The brilliance with which he staged the wardrobe malfunction will be shared in a future post.'

Sunset Silhouettes

Last summer, I did a piece, How To Get Naked Camping Going..., after discovering a new site to visit, Innertaboo. Given InnerTaboo's owner's goal is to channel his erotic energy, he spends much of his time naked in the great outdoors.

Spending time naked outside, inevitably leads one to water. Innertaboo is filled with images from the beach, my favorites being the final four sunset silhouette images from Wreck Beach in Vancouver.

'These sunset pictures at Wreck Nude Beach in Vancouver, BC were so fun to take! Our friend Mark is the photographer. Notice the bird in the first picture caught mid-air. Here comes true the saying: a picture is worth a thousand words. Good times. Definitely a re-do this next summer.'

'Wreck Beach itself was gorgeous. We arrived at 3:30 p.m. and there were hundreds of people in clusters all along the beach. It reminded me a bit of Burning Man. Hippies, straights, gays, drum circle (yay!), groups of people playing guitars and ukuleles, people of all ages clustering together socially, couples cuddling or laying on each other, nude vendors hawking their goods (pun intended), lively overall. A guy or two sported a boner. People swimming enjoying the water. And lots of people like cats soaking up the sun, minus the purring, looking contentedly at the ships, hydro-ferries, dancing glimmer on the waves.'
